Minister of Internal Security Avi Dichter over the weekend told Kol Yisrael Radio that “if the atmosphere is right, he will announce his candidacy for the leadership of Kadima.” At present, contenders include Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit and Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz.
The ongoing investigation against Kadima leader Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is beginning to worry senior party leaders, aware the cloud of guilt hanging over the prime minister’s head is damaging the party, added to the uncertainty which is resulting in much political speculation and backroom politicking.
Dichter’s message on Israel Radio is viewed by most as a trial balloon, with Dichter expected to measure the responses to his message and together with political polls he will make a final determination regarding a possible party leadership campaign.
