A video with rare footage of HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, z’tl, was released to the public by Yeshivas Ateres Shlomo in Israel.
The full hour and a half video is comprised of numerous scenes videoed over dozens of years by the staff of Ateres Shlomo.
The video also includes shailos posed to HaRav Chaim, z’tl, by the Rosh Yeshivah, HaGaon HaRav Shalom Ber Sorotzkin, including many shailos that he asked on behalf of Jews in the US.
In the video below, filmed in 2007, HaRav Sortotzkin asks the Gadol HaDor about an incident in which a bochur who is is weak in learning brought an iPhone to yeshiva. The yeshivah staff decided to kick him out but they told him that if he’s willing to snitch on his friends who bring phones or other forbidden devices to yeshivah, they’ll allow him to return after a week.
The shaila was whether the bochur, who very much wanted to remain in yeshiva, could snitch on his friends. HaRav Chaim, z’tl answered no.
HaRav Sorotzkin then asked whether the yeshivah should take the boy back after a week despite the fact that he brought a forbidden device to yeshivah and HaRav Chaim, z’tl, answered yes – that a week is enough.

Just to clarify- they said in the video that the usual policy for that Yeshiva is one week suspension and they wanted to make it longer to get him to snitch. Rav Chaim was saying one week is enough in that context. Not that for every Yeshiva and every situation one week is enough.

Pretty sure the first gen iPhone didn’t make it to Yisroel until 2008, so I wonder if video’s not later.
A true friend would rat on his friends for having iPhone in yeshivah. That devise probably endangers him seriously. I’m telling you, this Internet is a total distraction. Anyway, I am going to go back to binging Seder Zeraim in the Yerushalmi using Sefaria on my phone…

Is a bochur who”snitches” to the “phone mashgichim” at his yeshiva considered a moser??

So R’ Chaim is being choilek on every Rosh Yeshiva I ever had….

When I was in Yeshiva Israelis wanted me to help them get iPhones so it’s possible they had had friend in the states send it to them
And now we know why the jails are full of frum people, take the plea and snitch on your friends, I think Dwek went to that yeshiva
That was even in 2007 when cell phones etc were less rampant, that thr Godol haDor felt 1 week out sufficed.
Now 15 years later when these devices are a way if life, not even on the cards for any Yeshiva to have the audacity to throw out anyone. It would be outrageous on the part of any Yeshiva who would stoop so low, to throw out anyone, based on an electronic device possession
One might also ask whether the people who proposed turning the bachur into a snatch (which R. Chaim said is assur) should be posul from being mechanchim.

Listen carefully, he’s requiring on behalf of an American yeshiva.
In Israel “iPhone” is a term for all ‘Smart Phones”
But in any case, your point stands..for him to use the term “iPhone” already in Summer 2007 doesn’t make sense. The first Gen didn’t come out until June 2007.
