Surprising? UN Palestinian Rights Investigator Has History Of Antisemitic Remarks

Antisemitic remarks by Francesca Albanese, the UN Human Rights Council’s special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, were recently uncovered by The Times of Israel (TOI).

TOA discovered a number of antisemitic remarks by Albanese in her social media history, including saying that the “Jewish lobby” controls the US and, that the “Israel lobby” controlled the BBC in its coverage of Operation Protective Edge in 2014. She also claimed that the conflict in Gaza was “caused once again by Israel’s greed.”

Albanese also made light of Israel’s security concerns as “paranoia,” compared Israel’s actions to those of the Nazis, and sympathized with Hamas and other terror groups.

Following the report, Albanese was excoriated by US and Israeli officials and Jewish groups.

“Albanese’s antisemitism severely undermines the credibility of the UN Human Rights Special Rapporteur to deal with the issue of human rights in the context of Israel and the Palestinian territories,” said Deborah Lipstadt, the Biden administration’s antisemitism envoy. “Such blatant antisemitic rhetoric — particularly when it’s an established pattern — is simply unacceptable.”

US representative to the UN Human Rights Council Michèle Taylor, said, “We are appalled by recently uncovered antisemitic remarks on social media made by a UN Human Rights Special Rapporteur.”

“References to the ‘Jewish Lobby’ are an age-old trope; this is outrageous, inappropriate, corrosive, and degrades the value of the UN.”
