On the YWN there was an article about A-rod and the comments were from related to the story to the “Why should I care about this”?
Putting aside this particular story, do you follow general news stories that probably dont affect the jewish community but something that people are likely talking about

August 6, 2013 2:36 am at 2:36 am #969710akupermaParticipantThere is very little that doesn’t affect us. It isn’t like we live in an isolated bubble. Everything is interconnected.
Re: A-ROD.
Do you realize many frum Jews use drugs (ritalin, for example, is sometimes eve endorsed by schools). And many people look at goyish celebrities, for better or worse.
August 6, 2013 11:18 am at 11:18 am #969711zahavasdadParticipantA-Rod took performance enhacing drugs, Most frum people do not have much participation in sports
However I have heard from reliable sources of frum people giving their kids drugs to “enhance” their learning and helping them focus.

August 7, 2013 12:30 pm at 12:30 pm #969713BilboParticipantWelcome to planet earth…Hashem took Adam on a tour of the world and told him ” look at this world, i am giving it to you so take good care of it because no one else will (pardon my paraphrasing of the Medrash). How can you not be interested in the events of the world? Its your world! Once you see it as a personal relationship you will want to know as much about it as I possible (save the story about A-Rod.
August 7, 2013 7:23 pm at 7:23 pm #969715the-art-of-moiParticipantthe mesilas yeshorim says being preoccupied with worldly matters isnt good, but personally, i find politics and stuff like that fascinating. my compromise is that i dont check the news out on any website other than the yeshiva world.

It looks like YWN is a Matzav wanna be thats why they are starting to report about sports related things. Most Jews will not find the arod story relevant and should not.
