The only reason why we don’t do it today is because we don’t have a court today authorized to carry out the death penalty. Otherwise we would do it today. It is still the same prohibition.

Can one touch one’s best friend’s sister?

The Torah doesn’t differntiate between a best friend’s sister and a niece.

A neice is no different than any other strange girl is concerned, as far as the impermissibility to touch her.

interjection: funnybone said he thinks someone who can afford a 10-day international vacation will probably be happier than someone who can “only” afford a 2-day vacation to Orlando.

    Agree or disagree?

Does anyone agree with funnybone that a person who can afford a 10-day vacation, cleaning help and eating in restaurants will usually be a happier person than someone who cannot afford those things?

There are Chassidic people who are unhappy with their lives in the fold. To escape, they leave the derech altogether

And there are MO people who are unhappy with their lives in the fold. To escape, they too leave the derech altogether. (And this, in fact, occurs at a far higher rate among them, as R. Pruzansky noted.)

And so, there should be programs that allow them to go where they’re more comfortable and remain on the derech.

Ditto for the MO. 1) Why aren’t you advocating organizations to help transition MO Jews to a Chareidi way of life? 2) Why has only the reverse occurred to you?

Wolf: No such organization is needed any more than we need an organization to turn MO Jews into Satmar Chasidim. In fact, a much stronger case can be made for the latter, considering the tremendous OTD rate among MO Jews, and that it would be better to convince as many of them to become Yeshivish or Chasidish where the OTD rate is considerably less.

funnybone: My question wasn’t about getting thrilled; it was about happiness.

I understand you to feel that if a person wants more than, say, a two day trip to Orlando and their standard of vacation is a 10 day getaway to Israel, they may be an unhappy person if they can’t afford what they want.

Doesn’t that also imply that if they cannot afford air travel altogether they will likely be unhappy?

Thank you both for your advice.

Quick question: Is your advice based on what you, as an employee, would like from a manager or based upon what you believe is in the best interests of the company?

This is an extremely valuable thread. Rabbi Pruzansky shlita brings much to the table with his raising the cries of this OTD crisis, and much more importantly Rabbi Pruzansky’s very wise suggestions to his own MO brethren.

Rabbi Pruzansky’s column should be read out as a Shabbos drasha at every MO shul.

Raglayim L’davar is a Psak Halacha by the Posek Hador, Rav Yosef Shalom Eliashev. I know the mo oppose Daas Torah, but advocating eschewing Halacha as ruled upon by our poskim, because the goyim passed a law saying otherwise, is a new low. The fact of the matter is that abuse occurs in the modern community, where co-mingling is the norm, at a far greater rate than in the traditional Orthodox community. Yes, it is appropriate that the traditional Orthodox community defend itself against the canards and attacks spread against it by a deeply problematic modern community.

Instead of all the hand-wringing and talk, we need action. We need to start being mekarev, with kiruv outreach efforts, towards our Modern Orthodox brethren at-risk of assimilation R”L. Where are all the kiruv organizations? In addition to reaching out to the Reform, Conservative and secular yidden, they must extend their efforts to MO communities around the country.

Why is the Halacha that a Kohen cannot marry a gerusha (female divorcee)?

Obviously, being a gerusha is considered a mum (defect). Therefore a Kohen (who are on an elevated level) cannot marry one. And the mum isn’t the simple fact that she was already married, as the Halacha allows a Kohen to marry an almana (widow). The mum is her being a divorcee.

[The above issue does not apply to a man who divorced his wife. He has no inherent restrictions on whom he can later marry. And he has no special status in Halacha any different than a never-married man.]

NOMTW: The point is a very Jewish one. It is abundantly clear from Halacha that men and women are not treated “equally” in a marital relationship. Each one has their own — and very different — defined roles. This does not make one “inferior” to the other. Though it is correct to define it as different.
