☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant
Terrific piece, Letakein Girl. Keep up the good work.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantTry Chock full o’Nuts (it’s that heavenly coffee…). I think it’s a coarser grind than Folgers. It also tastes better as hot coffee.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI would agree to private funding of any yeshiva that proved and documented that they taught the secular curriculum.
Do you mean public funding?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe formula is based on taxpayers and public school students.
East Ramapo wants the formula changed as they say its unfair to the district because most students there go to private schools and not public schools, so thats how they want the state to bail them out.
That’s not a bail-out. It’s perfectly reasonable to say that funding should be based on all of the students who are legally entitled to the funds.
They’re not asking for a bail-out, they’re asking to fix a flawed funding formula.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYou’re welcome.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPlease describe the benefits of cold brew coffee in five sentences or less.
It’s cold, it tastes smoother than heat brewed coffee, and can easily be made highly concentrated, which is useful for Shabbos, a quick cup of good coffee, and latte.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI like making a week’s worth of coffee at once.
So take out the coffee maker. It’s only once a week, for crying out loud.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe fourth thing you need to do is buy a new phone.
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant
They say you’re supposed to use a coarser grind, but I don’t grind my own coffee.
Which coffee do you use?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantCold brew is not the same as iced coffee.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI haven’t had that.
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participantthe reason your Posek doesn’t allow a Kli Shlishi that he is chosesh to the Aruch haShulchan that upholds that the process of tea even in a Kil Shlishi is considered “gmar’ bishul or Bishul Kal
It’s also a Mishnah Berurah.
Whereas, instant coffee is already “cooked” processed.
We’re talking about non instant coffee.
Also, being that even if you leave tea in cold water it will process, so its not the “cooking”…
Now, i’m not sure about ground coffee, as coffee if left in a “cold brew” for many hours it will brew as well..Both tea and coffee will “brew” if soaked long enough.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYou can also use the Melitta pour-over gizmo.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI tried Trader Joe’s. I didn’t like it. (It’s also expensive)
It’s not difficult to make. Put a lot of ground coffee in an empty jar with water. Let it sit overnight on the counter. Then pour through a coffeemaker with a filter. (Not on Shabbos – this would definitely be borer).
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantVia is described as “instant and microground coffee”. The question is the bishul of the microground part.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPublic schools abuse the funding much worse.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIs Starbucks Via better than brewed coffee regarding bishul?
My posek allowed it using irui kli sheini (which has a din of kli shlishi), but doesn’t allow tea bags in a kli shlishi. I didn’t ask him about pour over coffee, but I assume it’s the same as tea.
I believe the metzius of Via is different than regular coffee grounds.
It might also be different than other instant coffees, but even on that, irui kli sheini is recommended.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantDid you ever try the Starbucks Via?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhy should public funding not go to public schools?
It should go to all schools which serve members of the public.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantLowertuition, I don’t think those who are mattir would stipulate that the grinds must be in the filter before Shabbos.

That is a terrific point.
June 18, 2017 10:55 am at 10:55 am in reply to: Rumor about Ivanka Trump Spurs conversation about Geirus #1298499☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe gedolim all held that it was an egregious perversion of halacha. Needless to say, they didn’t hold it was warranted.
June 18, 2017 9:22 am at 9:22 am in reply to: Rumor about Ivanka Trump Spurs conversation about Geirus #1298378☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantOh, and do you see the irony of your position?
To turn the tables on you:
If you agree with Rav Goren how do you dare to defend the validity of Ivanka Trump’s conversion?
BTW, there’s no issur of L”H on someone who is not בכלל עמיתך.
June 18, 2017 9:16 am at 9:16 am in reply to: Rumor about Ivanka Trump Spurs conversation about Geirus #1298370☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNo, we’re not missing your point. You are inaptly comparing one case to another. (I don’t know about Ivanka’s geirus, but you can’t prove its validity by comparing it to a different case).
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantGaon, it might be comparable to the case of pouring water over wine sediments to extract the flavor.
I used to think it’s definitely borer, but now I hear why perhaps it wouldn’t be.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantUsing a pour over with water from a kli shlishi (irui kli sheini, actually) might be muttar according to some (certainly not all), but I don’t think it would taste very good.
Starbucks Via is excellent, and less than 50¢ per cup if you buy it in Costco when they have a “coupon”. You should also use irui kli sheini for that, but it’s very good.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe cRc has updated its strawberry policy. Now, in line with what other hechsherim have been saying, they require soap.
Note: still others feel even that isn’t sufficient.
June 16, 2017
The cRc (Chicago Rabbinical Council) has been finding a high occurrence of insects in strawberries so that the previous method of rinsing and rubbing under a strong stream of water is not being efficient in removing the bugs (especially those that are hiding under the seeds). Therefore, until further notice, we recommend the following method to clean the strawberries from insects:
cut off tops (try to avoid making a hole);
soak and agitate strawberries in soapy water (do not substitute with vegetable wash) using a concentrated solution of approximately one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid mixed together with no more than 8 cups of water for 2 minutes. (We have found Seventh Generation Non-Fragrance Natural Dish Liquid Soap to be the ideal soap for those who are concerned about a “soapy aftertaste”);
rub each strawberry thoroughly under a stream of cold water with hand (or preferably with a bristled brush like a toothbrush);
soak and agitate strawberries a second time for 2 minutes in new soapy water with the same ratio as above;
rinse strawberries.
Once all five steps are done you may enjoy the strawberries without further inspection. Please note that this does not apply to organic strawberries that are very difficult to get cleaned and therefore should be avoided at this time. Of course, if one wants to avoid the above steps, one can eat the strawberries (even organic) by simply cutting off the tops and peeling off the entire outside of the strawberries, followed by a rinse.June 17, 2017 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm in reply to: Rumor about Ivanka Trump Spurs conversation about Geirus #1298272☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThis was no ordinary machlokes. The psak was so egregiously false that the gedolim passeled all of his psakim.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe problem with shampoo, lather, rinse and repeat is that it is a never ending cycle.
Especially if you do it twice.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSo?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIf there’s no kosher butcher, are you allowed to eat treif until someone opens a kosher shop?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHe says it’s assur, and two separate schools must be built.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantExactly
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHe says it’s assur mi’dina.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantTry frying a latke in it. That should soak up the excess oil.
Don’t be such a hothead.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMagic wire?
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantOnly for very small children. Certainly not high school. He says that would always be assur, l’kulei alma.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantRav Moshe held that at the age the yetzer hora takes effect, it’s absolutely assur.

☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSo you’re Avram the MD?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHowever, it will also sometimes eliminate the cheapest legitimate options.
Just about always.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYes. The dummy item doesn’t fit the description.
June 14, 2017 10:52 am at 10:52 am in reply to: Anti Zionist demonstration planned in Barclays Center #1296319☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNot all yeshivos and kollelim are registered, so even someone learning there full time won’t get a deferment.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe Kesef Mishneh already said eis la’asos. The people I’m referring to don’t pasken like that.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantZD, search for “Rotating Car Windshield Mount Holder Stand Bracket for Cell Phone”. Filter for under $1. Look at the second and third listings.
The cheaper ones do not fit the title.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThere are different ways of answering the stirah.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAnd, as you said, it’s a better option to send out of town.
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participantim just saying there no reason to say what this school or community is doing is clearly assur.
I don’t think they would be justified in following that psak vs. the psak of the gedolim in the US.
