Rav ovadiah Yosef says co-ed yeshivah high school is better than public school, for communities that can only support one school. There are number sh’ut seforim that discuss it.

Does he say you’re allowed to open one?

    an ‘east cost big city’

    Which one?

Anyhow, it has nothing to do with them thinking that (the collective) you look drab or silly. It has to do with their profit. (Maybe they’re hoping that you think you look drab and silly).

Are they allowed to compete with local businesses? That’s a Choshen Mishpat shailah (hasagas g’vul) and a posek would need to hear all details to make that determination. You certainly have the right to decide to give your business to the local merchants.

When Rav Elazar Shach gave a speech in 1990, lambasting secular israelis, calling them breeders of pigs and rabbits, (which later became known as the famous “rabbits and pigs speech”) the Lubavitcher Rebbe came out, calling for rav shach to apologize and saying that its not the way to be mekarev yidden.

You left out the part about the secular man who later told Rav Shach that he took it to heart and did teshuvah.

Would you give a dollar to tzadakah for every pot, pan etc. that has ever had to be toiveled in mikvah because of some crooked mashgiach, whether chasddish, litivish or Eastern Shore leading to treifus being sold to a frum yid? Please name your favorite tzadakah.

One of my daughters just brought her daughter-in-law a beautiful diamond ring for $700 and the girl is glowing from happiness. Maybe it’s different here in Israel.

In the U.S., unfortunately, that would be a rare story. Or the daughter in law would be faking it.

    First, mazel tov.

Please be aware that your financial situation and locale are likely very different than the vast majority of the CR readership.

Curbing wedding expenses in the in town yeshiva community often does eliminate jobs – a one man band means no drummer, bass, guitar, or horn players.

A cheaper photographer means fewer assistants.

Plastic gemach flowers means no florist.

Simpler cuisine means less profit for the caterer, and fewer workers.

You also didn’t answer my point that good health tips cuts income from undertaker’s.

Mainly, though, you missed the point I’m making, which is that you don’t advise people to spend money they likely don’t have because someone else will lose out. Unfortunately, because of societal pressure, people spend more money than they can afford on simchas.

B”H, a lot of progress has been made on the cost of the actual affair, with “takana packages” and the like a way for people to save. Jewelry, however, has not had the same success. Although in some communities, attempts have been made to keep costs down, overall it hasn’t worked.

Your suggestion to not buy diamond engagement rings could hurt the economic livelihood of many frum yidden in the diamond trade…from importers to cutters, setters and retailers.

Yes, and suggesting that people curb their chasunah expenses hurts the livelihood of caterers, florists, musicians, and photographers, and suggesting people eat healthy and exercise hurts doctors and undertakers.

First and most important, Rav Ralbag, shlita, is a chashuvah rav and a big talmid chacham

That is not an uncontested assertion.

Issues of personal integrity aside, it is definitely l’toeles to warn the tzibur away from a hashgacha with subpar standards. There are certain accepted norms which some hashgachos don’t follow.

Joseph, for how long have you been a Zoroastrian (you obviously believe in a god of good and a god of evil)

That’s a terrible mischaracterization of the Satmar Rebbe’s shittah (all Joseph did was quote him).

HKB”H often has His malochim do His bidding. If the malach he commands to do something is the Satan, it is ma’aseh Satan. The Satmar Rebbe’s point is that the success of the IDF creates the false impression that Hashem is somehow pleased with the redefinition of Am Yisroel as a nation based on land and language, not the Torah. This doesn’t ch”v mean that it wasn’t allowed or even commanded by HKB”H.

To take the Rebbe’s shittah and describe it as sh’tei r’shuyos ch”v is an egregious error.

DaMoshe, shame on you for casting such aspersions on the motivations of a Gadol bi’Yisroel. You’re better than that.

I second both parts of that.

Let me play devils advocate (literally). This “small screen” is easier to use unobtrusively than a larger laptop and you know, “just this once” let me see what else this thing can do.

It’s also easier to use something which is already in your pocket than to take the subway to someplace you shouldn’t be going.

DaasYochid – if you could show direct proof that more social welfare would prevent abortions maybe you would have an argument but as I mentioned that is probably impossible or practically impossible to prove.

I didn’t address that part of your argument.

We should be approaching it from the point of “Abortion is murder and therefore should not be allowed because murder is wrong and evil”

The main problem is that people think it’s ok to murder an innocent human being in an extremely barbaric way. Just because they don’t have enough money does not make that ok. If somebody is on rough times does that justify going around killing people? So then how would it justify killing a child?

Okay, abortion is evil. I didn’t disagree with you about that either. If increased social spending would prevent that evil (I stress if because I know you don’t think it’s true), wouldn’t you be in favor?

I don’t think they need to explain every decision they make.

btw, being dan l’kaf zchus doesn’t mean being stupid and thinking that an aveira is not an aveira. This is clearly assur according to Hilchos Loshon Hora.

You are entitled to your opinion that it’s assur. I happen to think you’re probably right. You’re not entitled to say motzi shem ra on an organization by saying they don’t care about lashon hora, when you know quite well that in the past, they have deleted (when pointed out) lashon hora and probably delete a whole lot more which never got approved to begin with.

Again, I’m not telling you to change your opinion about whether this particular case was (is) assur, rather to not accuse YWN of deliberately violating hilchos lashon hora.
