The 11 best April Fools’ gags of 2015

April Fools is a wonderful and terrible day for the internet. Let’s start with the terrible part: yes, there’s a chance that you’ll be tricked by fake news and bad pranks, and that’s not really fun for anyone. But then there’s the nice part: today is the one day that companies stop taking themselves so seriously. Sure, some just use it as an opportunity to beg you for retweets of a silly image. But others put a surprising amount of thought and effort into making small pranks and videos that their customers and other viewers online will have fun with. And that’s pretty cool.

    MOTOROLA’S SELFIE STICK

For April Fools’ Day, Motorola turns the much-derided selfie stick into high art. Its video is a wonderfully funny parody of the craftsmanship films that tech companies, Kickstarter campaigns, and generally hip companies like to make about their new products. And honestly, it’ll kind of make you want a hand-made selfie stick.

    GOOGLE’S SMARTBOX

What are the chances something like this ends up on Kickstarter by the end of the month? A digital mailbox is a silly concept, but we wouldn’t put it past anyone. One San Francisco startup even offered a service that digitized your mail by having its employees come get your letters and then scan them and put them online. It shut down after about a year.

    THINKGEEK’S STEAM MACHINE

Steam Machines haven’t exactly taken the gaming world by storm, but they’d probably sell a lot better if they looked like this and were bundled with a copy of BioShock. ThinkGeek is always one of the more fun sites to visit on April Fools’ Day because of its dedication to making up weird gadgets and apparel, but this one wins for identifying a pun and just going for it.

    TESLA’S AUTONOMOUS PARKING TICKET AVOIDANCE

Tesla gets points for idea over execution. Its video isn’t anywhere as sharp as, say, Motorola’s, but the idea that autonomous cars could one day avoid parking tickets for you is interesting and sounds like it could even be possible. Why couldn’t your self-driving car just find another spot when its parking time was up? For now, you’re still stuck with parking garages (or, you know, public transit).

    GOOGLE MAPS’ PAC-MAN

    COM.GOOGLE

Is there a better possible use of Google’s custom top-level domain? Probably not. Just head there and try it out.

    FUNNY OR DIE’S DIPS

    MICROSOFT’S MS-DOS MOBILE

    REDDIT’S “THE BUTTON”

Maybe it’s real. Maybe it’s fake. Who cares. Reddit put a button on its site that supposedly resets a 60-second countdown every time someone click it. What, if anything, will happen if the timer makes it all the way down? Who cares. This is arguably the best button since Lost Season 2.

    NETFLIX’S BINGE WATCH WARNINGS

    YOUTUBE’S “SANDSTORM” OBSESSION

Points for absurdity. If you search for a musician or a song today, YouTube will ask if you meant to search for “‘Sandstorm’ by Darude.” It also lets you pump snippets of “Sandstorm” into any video that you’re watching, making it dramatically more exciting.

As there is currently no Beis ha-Mikdash, all the critter is good for is milk (depending on breed, most cattle in New Jersey are bred primarily for milk), and eventually for a low grade of meat (that is the fate of dairy cows when they get old). The skin will be used for leather. Some parts might be ground up for fertilizer or animal feed.

No sense getting excited now. If Meshiach can build a Beis ha-Mikdash without the assistance of the government or the rabbinate, he can find a parah adumah.

ywn shows women in their photo albums and perhaps news items, so it seems that ywn shita is to allow tzniusly dressed woman into their pictures. if you dont like that, there are plenty of other frum websites out there.

i have adblock (which i recomend you get), so i dont know which ad you are referring to, but i assume that it has a tzniusly dressed woman in it. if it dosnt then you takeh have a good point.

Most of the use of a smartphone is in public, so it is less likely used for smut than someone using their computer in private.

i dont know who your are talking about, but I know that there are plenty of kids who have smartphones and use them in private, all the time, for “shmutz”. maybe if one is a single living by them selves then a computer is as dangerous as a smartphone, although you would still have access in private places that are not at home. but for many other people, especially teens, a portable, always there, private smartphone, is far worse than a in place, perhaps supervised, public computer.

whatever the case, a person should definitely have a filter and reporting service on their device. both of them.

Letakein Girl: why do assume that its a she?

Why do you feel that it is your responsibility to make her get rid of her smartphone

because the op obviously feels that a smart phone can be dangrous to his/her friends spiritual life. and kol yisroel arevim ze laze

chacha5: A smartphone is no worse than a computer (you can disable filters too). Are you willing to get rid of yours?

a computer is different from a smartphone. a computer can only stay in one place, which might be a public place, while a smartphone can be brought with the person to anywhere he/she wants (e.g. a private place, a place with not-so-good-friends, a place with unfiltered wi-fi). and if the computer is shared, then this persons time on the computer is limited. and a smartphone is much more personal than a pc.

the op could be talking about a young teen (boy), who has a smartphone, maybe against his parents will. im sure we can all agree that in this case, it is not a good thing for the kid to have a smartphone

chacha5:good luck. and if you cant convince your friend to throw it out, try to at least convince your friend to get a filter and reporting service, if your friend doesn’t have one

the main point, it seems, for kiddush l’vana is HAshem renewing of the moon.

so if your on the light side of the moon, than would you be able to make kiddush l’vana?

and lets say you go to the dark side, and than back to the light side, does that count as renewing? or can you say renewing is only a din is seeing the moon, and since you can always see the moon if your on it(i suppose), it does count as renewal?

just saying that there is a spiritual effect that eating not kosher has on a person. im not saying that C”S is non-kosher, just that it might be comparable to one whos does not eat C”S.

i cant remember the source for my original statement, so i understand if you don’t hold by it, but it definitely came from a vaild source.

golfer: im sorry, i seem to have misquoted the noam elimelech.

the noam elimelech bring down a medresh that at the yam, the b”y were not b’achdus. he says that is the reason why the malachim said “halalu uvdai avoda zara v’halau uvdai avoda zara” and the only way the yam split says the noam elimelech, was when HAshem said “daber el B”Y v’yisau“, which the noam elimelech reads to say “tell B”Y to be one group”

so fakert, this shows that even though there were 12 tunnels, HAshem considered it (at least?) enough achdus to split the sea.

what the Lubavitcher Rebba was saying (i think)is that HAshem dosnt anything for nothing, so therefore every single person has a mission in life that they need to fulfill. and that’s the reason HAshem put them in this world for. and this mission, is crucial for the world to survive.
