zahavasdadParticipantYou cant translate languages directly, Languages arent exact, there are Idomatic expressions and Euphumisms. Human beings can usually figure out what the speaker meant when a Euphamism or Idomatic expression means, A computer cannot. However in the case of Spanish <===> English because there are so many speakers and so many people the computers have gotten better in the translation However in Yiddish there are so few speakers of it, not much time is spent working out translations. And chassidic yiddish is especially notorious for euphimisms which makes it even harder to translate. A simple example is there is no word for smartphone in yiddish, so they just use iPhone, however when you translate that back into English, iPhone means Apple iPhone and not generic smartphones. And there are many others that only a speaker would easily know what was meant, especially with euphamisms zahavasdadParticipantDY I would quote PT Barnum now, but I dont think it would be allowed here. zahavasdadParticipantThe “Kosher Lamp” is no great invention, You can basically do that yourself. Make a Lamp and then cover it at night. Make sure you use things that do not burn zahavasdadParticipantThere is no Rosetta Stone for yiddish Its quite expensive like $250 and for Spanish there are 2 versions, the Spain Spanish version and the latin American Spanish. American Spanish is like Latin American Spanish so you are better off getting that one. The difference between Latin American Spanish and Spain Spanish is basically like the difference between UK english and American english although slightly more than that. zahavasdadParticipantI would not text a rav unless he says its OK, some arent cool with texting and some are. zahavasdadParticipantYou have to admire the obdurateness of KJ Chusid, there is nothing wrong with that December 11, 2014 10:06 pm at 10:06 pm in reply to: Any advice for meshulchim going to Toronto? #1047073zahavasdadParticipant<en> also dont let people fool you into taking small money…. Is this a Joke, If you are collecting you should be happy with whatever you get and not ask for more especially if you dont know the person zahavasdadParticipantLOL zahavasdadParticipantI tend to type very fast with typos, I can type like 100 WPN , but I do make errors zahavasdadParticipantIf the Satmar in EY use a Road, Are protected by the Police, Have Running water or Electricity or use the airport thet are taking benefits zahavasdadParticipantSo we should make a takana because a few might go OTD so the rest can get good jobs or fill out forms correctls zahavasdadParticipantThe chassidim already cross the bridge, Dress and Language havent stopped them zahavasdadParticipantI am fairly certain Der Arberter Ring is what the Bund was called in the US zahavasdadParticipantIf you dont want to co-operate, Dont use their Roads, Their Money, Their Policeman , Their Airport etc zahavasdadParticipantMy point is Yiddish was used by many as a secularism. I know an older woman who told me she went to “Yiddish School” . I had never heard of that and she told me it was an Anti-Religious secular school. What ever you might think of Zionism, I can assure you you have even less in common than Bundism. And Bundism was more Yiddish than the Zionists were zahavasdadParticipantIn pre-war Poland there were basically 3 groups of jews. The religious, The Zionists and the Bundists. The smallest group was the Zionists and the largest was the Bundists. The Bundists were jews who were non (or anti) religious and Non (or Anti) Zionists who were Yiddishists , They wanted a “Jewish Culture” including Yiddish and to stay in Poland. It was the Bundists who were the leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (Google Marek Edelman). The Bundists were strong belivers in Yiddish Culture. zahavasdadParticipantThere was an article a few weeks ago in the NY times about unfortunatly and OTD Belzer Chassid who went to college and realized what a poor secular education and what poor english skills he had. He mentioned in the article he didnt even know what a molecule was (a fairly simple english word) In the same article an Askan was bragging how great the education was. He was only fooling himself. zahavasdadParticipantWhat fancy words, Its plain english zahavasdadParticipanthe probably will be the last Charedi to run on a non-Charedi slate zahavasdadParticipantThe problem is A Jewish person falls in love with a Half or quarter jew who is not Halachically jewish. How do you solve the problem They either ask you to convert the non-jewish partner or they will go to Cyprus and get married anyway. Currenntly 1/3 of all marriages in Israel occur in Cyprus. papa says to deport them or dont let them back in, As the law stands without Moshiach this is not possible. So you must let them back in the country now. Anyone have any real suggestions how to solve the problem. zahavasdadParticipantIts really like anything else in the current situtation that is against the torah, How does a frum person run the government over non frum people. Issues like shabbas buses, Toeivah Parades , Treif food , Army issues etc will constantly come up and you have to decide how to balance the Torah and the belifes of people who disagree. Once Moshaiach comes, thats different , but he is not here and you have to govern now. Forcing torah laws will not work and likely backfire. Many choose not to put themselves in this position, he did . zahavasdadParticipantKJ do a search on Yiddish Literature, alot of it is defiantly Apikorsis. The famous Forward (Forvetz in Yiddish) was started as an Anti-religious socialist newspaper zahavasdadParticipantAt this moment in time, Israel is not a torah state. When Moshiach comes hopefully that will change, but we must deal with the present and not the future. zahavasdadParticipantYou didnt know that Yiddish is well known for having bad words in it? Even the non-jews know the words zahavasdadParticipantAnd what about people who were already married for years, you cant deport them I dont think its legal to deport a national of your country. True this is not the torah law, but right now you cannot create a stateless person. zahavasdadParticipantIts not really realistic to expect people who are married to non-jews with either non-jewish kids or jewish kids with a non-jewish husband to expect the jewish spouse to kick out the non-jewish partner and non-jewish kids. Yeah I know Ezra forced the men to divorce their non-jewish wives, but thats not going to happen today. And even though the Chreadim control marriage, if someone doesnt want to obey their rules, they just go to Cyprus and you have not accomplished anything zahavasdadParticipantLast I checked there is Tumah in Yiddish too, In fact its famous for it zahavasdadParticipantIrvrit/Loshon Hakodesh Languages are not static, words change, New words are invented old words are discarded and words change meaning. There is no word in Tanach for electric Light Bulb for example and we are not sure what many of the birds listed as kosher are as they have been forgotten. Elizer ben Yehuda had to update the language otherwise it was not useable. If in a time of Moshiach unless we go back to life in the time of Tanach, Loshon Hakodesh would have to be updated if it would become a spoken language. zahavasdadParticipantWhat happend in DC was not the fault of the Gerim, they were sincere. It was the Rabbi who was at fault. zahavasdadParticipantI’m Jewish and I’m writing a symphony. Does that make it “Jewish music”? Felix Mendelsohn was Jewish. So is David Lee Roth, I doubt them being jewish makes their music jewish music zahavasdadParticipantIf someone doesn’t know any other language then youay talk to them in Ivrit otherwise it’s assur I have some very frum Sephardic neighbors. They have a picture on the wall of their son meeting Rav Ovadiah Yosef at his Bar Mitzvah. While the parents are from Israel all the children are American. They speak english and Hebrew. I asked the son over Shabbos when he met Rav Yosef what did he speak to him in. The Son told me Rav Yosef spoke to him in Hebrew (I dont know if Rav Yosef knew english or not). The father of this family prefers when I go over there on Shabbos that I speak only hebrew and prefers only hebrew spoken by his children as well on Shabbat. Of course this is not entirely possible and some english is spoken zahavasdadParticipantIf you have ever been to Europe you will notice people speak alot of languages. Ive seen people there 7 languages. The jews were no differnce. Cities Like Prague, Bratislava (Pressburg) , Krakow, Lviv (Lemberg) , Budapest jews probably spoke a bunch of languages German, Polish, Czech, Slovak, HUngarian, Ukranian, Russian and probably others as well. it made a lot of sense to have a language frica Yiddish, People spoke the regular language and also spoke yiddish. Yiddish was the common language. This is not the case anymore. Lior there are some who want to do that to English, they call it Yeshivish. I am not convienced its much differnet than English though zahavasdadParticipantIts not so pashut that everyone follows the Chazon Ish on Tinok S’neshba. There are a few that hold they are mamesh R-shaim. zahavasdadParticipantThere is also a clock repair store in Roosevelt Field on Long Island zahavasdadParticipantWe can disagree on that. A chabad niggun is La Marsailles, Ive heard them sing it and Ive heard the story why it is. The Lubavicher Rebbe had a visitor from France and wanted to make him welcome, so he sang La Marsailles to him at a fabregin zahavasdadParticipant1. Avodah Zara- It is assur to listen to music (even classical music) written for the sole purpose of worship of other gods. Church music for exampl ANd make sure you dont sing Maoz Tzur to the traditional tune, Its Midevil germanic church music zahavasdadParticipantDY There was a famous incident in Netanya, where a movie theater was open on Friday night, Rav Elyshiv ruled that one must protest this movie theater no matter what and the Sephardic Rav of Netanya was against protesting saying not only would it not work, it would likely backfire (It in the end did backfire as the theater is still open and there is more hostility to the charedim) . Rav Elyshiv ruled that the backlash didnt matter, Chilul shabbos was occuring and must be protested. Certainly there are some elements when a majority is hit would love to pass shabbos laws in Israel and would do whatever it takes to make it happen zahavasdadParticipantRav Harari (I think thats the name of the Syrian Rav) is considered an equal among the other Gadolim of our time. I also saw a video on Youtube of Rav Ovadiah Yosef and he is clearly speaking hebrew You can look it up yourself (Even if you just want to see Rav Ovadiah Yosef speak some torah) Look up “Rav Ovadia Yosef: May a Jew enter the Temple Mount?” on Youtube. Just a bit of a disclaimer, the english translation is a bit off the hebrew zahavasdadParticipantFrench and Italian are really beautiful languages and its beautiful to hear it spoken, Its too bad I dont understand much what they are saying zahavasdadParticipantIt was one thing when all jews spoke Yiddish, but today most non-chassidic jews dont speak it. Not everyone holds by the Satmar Rebbe or Rav Aharon Kotler. The Syrian Gadol Rav (Sorry his name skips my mind) will only speak Hebrew even though he does speak English. Yiddish is not the language of the Sephardim. zahavasdadParticipantNew Square and Kiryat Joel do not contain anyone who is hostile to their leadership . If the Charedim ruled Israel there would be alot of Chilonim who dont exist in KJ or New Square zahavasdadParticipantIf the CHaredi Parties would win a majority in the next election Do you think they would adopt a torah based system and adopt torah punishments including Skelah and Mackot? And if they would implement such laws, do you think they would be successful? December 3, 2014 9:23 pm at 9:23 pm in reply to: Do not assume they don't understand your language. #1045349zahavasdadParticipantMost people consider English to be the language of the sophisticated and educated and everyone wants to speak it (Ive been about the world a bit and thats how it is) People used to feel that way about German and French. People who did not speak english tended to apologize how poor their english was Yiddish speakers tend not to feel that way December 3, 2014 8:08 pm at 8:08 pm in reply to: Do not assume they don't understand your language. #1045347zahavasdadParticipantMy mothers first language was yiddish (She hasnt spoken it in years as she has nobody to speak it to) and it was my grandmothers as well. I can somewhat understand it if spoken loudly , slowly and clearly (Im sure it wouldnt take too long to be up to speed as I used to hear it alot when I was smaller) , so to say I have a problem with yiddish speakers is just wrong. I understand spanish and can speak it and if anyone tries the spanish trick on me, they immediately stop zahavasdadParticipantMissionaries are not the greatest threat, Non-religious is. OTD doesnt mean become a christian, it means becoming secular non-religious zahavasdadParticipantSo where it is written in the Torah that to vote , Its a Chilul Shamayim zahavasdadParticipantThere is a Gemorah that says that some tried to hide Shir HasHirum so it would not become part of Tanach December 2, 2014 9:09 pm at 9:09 pm in reply to: Do not assume they don't understand your language. #1045345zahavasdadParticipantFor some reason Yiddish Speakers never got this message and do tend to speak Yiddish even though they know everyone around them speaks english zahavasdadParticipantActually the OTD’s were very Prominent from the time of the Haskallah adn beyond Even in Pre-war Europe they were the Majority December 2, 2014 4:07 pm at 4:07 pm in reply to: Do not assume they don't understand your language. #1045343zahavasdadParticipantAvram When you speak another language besides english people get paranoid and THINK you are talking about them even if its not true.
