Latinos are sometimes shocked that I can understand them and can speak Spanish (I am not fluent, but I can speak complete sentances)
December 2, 2014 3:53 am at 3:53 am in reply to: Do not assume they don't understand your language. #1045330zahavasdadParticipantLanguages have “borrowed words” and one can many times figure out what is said from words that are borrowed from another language
zahavasdadParticipantIts demeaning because you didnt like my answer. As someone who has worked in the non-jewish world all my life I can tell you , that you will come in contact with all sorts of people who do things you dont agree with have differnet beliefs and you will likely be in positions you will not like.
For example
A n-jewish -worker dies and the whole office goes to the Funeral
A co-worker has a Toeivah Marriage and the entire office buys them a gift and you are expected to give.
A co-worker has a mixed marriage and the entire office buys them a gift
Business Relationships with members of the opposite gender (Issues of Yichud, Travel, Shaking hands)
Business lunches and Dinners
You have to figure out how to navigate these roadblocks without making yourself look selfish and have to be a team player. Being a Team player is very important in an office especially with people you are spending half your life with.
I think a Rav might be able to figure out a way out like maybe for example the charity is to feed the poor rather than fund the local Hindu Temple.
zahavasdadParticipantI am sure most here will congradulate you for what you did, however they do not understand that in an office everyone is equal and it was not a kiddush Hashem and you will be seen as “above others” I am no Rabbi and you should probably have asked a Shaila before saying no. (Make an Exuse you are busy now and will reply later)
Office Politics is always trickey.
zahavasdadParticipantBooks arent monolithic, what applies for one book doesnt apply for another.
Too many books have been banned claiming it was Kefira when the banner didnt even read the book and sometimes select passages are lifted taken out of context and then the book is banned. (One can do this with almost anything and completly alter what the book really is, there are people who do this with the Torah and completly intentionally mis-interpret the torah)
December 1, 2014 12:48 pm at 12:48 pm in reply to: Is it ever appropiate to talk back to a Rebbi? #1046187zahavasdadParticipantIf I was a good rebbe and I knew of a bad Rebbe, Id want him gone, Having 10 kids and no other Parnassah is no reason not to fire a bad rebbe. Not everyone is cut out to be a rebbe and If there is one bad Rebbe in a yeshiva of 20 Rebbes, that one Rebbe can spoil it for the rest.
If that one bad Rebbe teaches the same grade every year it means most of the boys will have that Rebbe and the entire well is spoiled.
zahavasdadParticipantLitvak’s did speak yiddish at one point, but it seems they went for English as most Lakewooders speak english although there is an effort to push yiddish there.
zahavasdadParticipantYou can accomplish the same secret code by speaking Navaho
zahavasdadParticipantYiddish is not nessasary, Outside of chassidic communities and some old people very few people speak it. It is not even the most common language of jews
English probably is and Hebrew is probably second.
Yiddish has become more of a hidderance than a help and too many speakers of it have very poor english skills
November 30, 2014 4:40 pm at 4:40 pm in reply to: Is it ever appropiate to talk back to a Rebbi? #1046167zahavasdadParticipantNone of us know what really happend here. Im not even sure the father really knows.
If The Rebbe abused the son in any way, then it IS appropriate to talk bad no matter what, there is never an excuse to berate or engage on corporal punishment.
However if the boy did do the wrong thing and was appropriately punished (Doing the wrong thing does not mean the rebbe has the right to berate or hit for ANY reason) then he should apologize
zahavasdadParticipantRefuah Shelemah.
Dont worry about eating “Shabbosdick Foods” , Worry about getting better first
November 25, 2014 2:41 pm at 2:41 pm in reply to: People coming in to Bais Medrash with no leining skills #1044278zahavasdadParticipantIn my parelence, you Lein the Torah and you learn Gemorah
zahavasdadParticipantThere are people who will Dorm their basements in Far Rockaway
November 23, 2014 10:45 pm at 10:45 pm in reply to: People coming in to Bais Medrash with no leining skills #1044275zahavasdadParticipantDid OP mean LEINING or LEARNING?
zahavasdadParticipantI am not so familiar with creating music, but except for the Schomberg scale, there are only a finite number of combinations on the regular scale and its impossible to create a new combination as its already been done, thats one reason why you might see sampling either deliberate or many times just coincidental
zahavasdadParticipantThe real answer is No there is not a Yeshivish community there, its a more modern community like Teaneck or the 5 towns (Just not as wealthy as the 5 towns)
zahavasdadParticipantI am sure if Rav Moshe knew you have to cross the Mechitaza of the Queens/Nassau border he would totally assur living there.
zahavasdadParticipantTurks are not Arabs, Yes they are muslims, but not arabs, In fact most muslims are not arabs and the largest muslim country is Indonesia and they are not arab either, I think there are more muslims in Indonoseia than there are arabs.
And Not all Arabs are muslim, many are christians, especially in Lebanon and Syria
zahavasdadParticipantIts not a place for a real Yid to live, there is oy R’L a Young Israel there and only 1 Pizza shop and only 1 Chinese place
zahavasdadParticipantLong Island
Basically “Out of Town” and far far away (about 30 mins) from Brooklyn Ir Hakodesh
zahavasdadParticipantOne should not run in the middle of the BQE wearing Tallis and Tfilling holding a Tzdekah box in order to collect from the oncoming Vehicles and expect the Hashem to protect you because you are doing a Mitzvah.
One needs to do whatever it takes to protect themselves without relying on a miracle.
zahavasdadParticipantI am sure those Kedoshim were careful in their actions and yet they will killed in their tallis and Tffillin. Segolos are not a good way to look at thing. At least the Uzi might have prevented more than 1 death as they would have killed him after the first attack
zahavasdadParticipantCarrying an Uzi and knowing how to fire it, will likely protect you from harm
zahavasdadParticipantThey have also protested at Torah Temimah , Chaim Berlin and Chabad of Kensington.
They are basically one family (The Phelps) whose Patriach had 13 children , 11 of them are lawyers and the recently dececsed Fred Phelps was a disbarred lawyer so they had unlimited free legal access and was able to fight for things most could not to the limit
November 17, 2014 9:59 pm at 9:59 pm in reply to: bidding on ebay where listing ends on shabbos #1042440zahavasdadParticipantThere are opinions (Not the Posek the OP asked) thats its not a halachic sale because a kinyan did not occur.
November 14, 2014 5:57 pm at 5:57 pm in reply to: bidding on ebay where listing ends on shabbos #1042430zahavasdadParticipantRealistically since I think there is a possible issue of Genevia in more than one way, Its not shopping for another Psak, but rather new information that the Posek did not know.
November 14, 2014 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm in reply to: bidding on ebay where listing ends on shabbos #1042429zahavasdadParticipantIt depends how much time is left on an auction, I belive if there is less than 24 hours less (Or maybe 12 Hours) you cannot. If there is more then you can usually
November 14, 2014 4:45 pm at 4:45 pm in reply to: bidding on ebay where listing ends on shabbos #1042426zahavasdadParticipantSellers on eBay do not like when bidders bid and dont Pay, not only do you have to Beg for your Fees Back, you dont get a sale that you were promised.
I will not disagree with he Psak if the bid was not already made, however if the Bid WAS already made there could be an issue of Stealing and Genevas Daas as well since the seller thinks he will have a sale and you dont pay.
eBay charges Fees as well, most of those fees are refundable if the buyer backs off, but it takes a few weeks to get them back, but some fees might be lost and you cost the seller money depending how he listed it.
zahavasdadParticipantPet Rock
zahavasdadParticipantSometimes when a kid is kicked out, the other kids become sympathetic to the kicked out sibling and blame the parents.
Its really bad to take a story from the torah and say this applies exactly to my situation and follow exactly what happend in the Torah Story (Should one for example go to the Vatican or Mecca and offer Karbonos like Eliyahu did at Har HaCarmel? Of course not) Eliyahu HaNavi is not you and you are not like Avraham
zahavasdadParticipantYou cannot compare NFL (Or even College Football players) to a bunch of Bochrim. Those guys are steroid induced 300 pounders trying to get you as opposed to a bunch of yeshiva guys more or less the same and the helmets are used as a weapon as well.
By the same take you can say the same for baseball, A hardball thrown at someone (especially their head or groin section) can really hurt someone
zahavasdadParticipantDepending on the age of the child , It might be illegal and a terrible Chilul Hashem (If a child is under 18 it is against the law to kick them out unless they are a JD and being Machalel Shabbos is not considered being a JD under the law) and even if they are breaking the law, its not so easy to kick them out
zahavasdadParticipantGTA was a sarcastic remark,
Personally I like Words with friends,
zahavasdadParticipantYou can’t assur something just because its not “in the spirit” of shabbos. You have to clarify whether it is permitted halachically or not
By that statement one could use a Shabbos clock to turn on the TV to watch a Football game and then use the Shabbos clock to turn it off
zahavasdadParticipantActually a more interesting question would be e-books
Books are slowly becoming obsotete and while I dont think Siddurs, Gemorahs , Tanachs and a few other popular and common will stop being printing. Smaller run books very well might be and be only be able to be released on an e-book
November 5, 2014 3:05 pm at 3:05 pm in reply to: How does the legend of Icarus resonate in the Torah? #1039916zahavasdadParticipantBefore anyone says Jews have nothing to do with Avodah Zorah
Tammuz was a Babylonian god
zahavasdadParticipantThere was a case on Long Island where a pregnant jewish woman got into a car accident and was in a coma. The doctors advised to abort the baby in order to help the woman recover. The Husband agreed, but some Pro-lifers tried to get custody of the baby and prevent the abortion. They sued in court and lost because they didnt have standing and the baby was aborted, Sadly while the woman lived she has lived in a nursing home ever since.
Tim Tebows mother was a missionary in the Phillipines I think and when she was pregnant with Tim Tebow, she got malaria or some other disase, The doctors told her to get an abortion and she refused and Tim Tebow was born health, they have gone on a crusade to ban all abortions even danger to the mother claiming there is no such thing since she was fine in the end and he was fine too.
zahavasdadParticipantI am of the opinion if the Shabbos App is true and not a hoax, the backers are trying to minimize the Chilul shabbos of those who keep “half Shabbos” as opposed to trying to get more people to text on Shabbos.
Its like if someone is driving on shabbos and asks you directions, you are supposed to tell them the shortest route to get there in order to minize their chilul shabbos
zahavasdadParticipantI am not trying to defend anything, just trying to understand it and I belive if we try to understand it , we will have better results. You catch more bees with honey than vinegar.
Some people if we ban things they will stop and others they dont care what the Rabbanim say, you need to convience them otherwise
zahavasdadParticipantI once heard a Shiur by Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss
Friday Night Men go to Shul, Daven and Shmooze with Friends. Women Stuck at home with Kids
Saturday Morning : Men go to Shul, Daven, Have a Kiddush and Schoomze with friends. Women Stuck at home with kids
Sat Afternoin Man has a Chavrusa with a friend. Woman stuck at home with kids
Men go to Mincha, Shalosh Seudoth , Shmooze with friends, Women Stuck at home with kids
Rabbi Moshe Meir Weiss is no reform or YCT Rabbi , and even he said this
zahavasdadParticipantUnfortunatly you are all missing the real issue here, If the App is real or not it doesnt matter, The issue is people are not enjoying Shabbos for whatever reason
There was a great blog post by a west cost Rabbi, About rebooting shabbos
It said for many people the following is great and inspiring. Go to Shul Friday night, Eat a dinner with the same foods each weeks singings the same Zmerios and the Parsha Dvar Torah
Go to Sleep, Go to Shul in the morning and come home and make Kiddush, have a meal with Chulent Sing More Zemiroth and Dvar torahs, go to sleep and either go to a friend, Park (Or some people are just stuck in their homes, they live in areas without eruvs or their friends live too far away) Daven Mincha, Have Shalosh Seudot and the daven Maariv and maybe have a Melava Malka.
Maybe you think this is great and awesome, but what if for example you were stuck in the house and couldnt leave, your only connection with your friends was your phone. What if you did not like the traditional Shabbos foods or Zemiroth. What if your shabbos entailed the kids fighting the whole time for the right to sit next to Mommy and throwing food around and screamed the whole time.
October 29, 2014 5:09 pm at 5:09 pm in reply to: When will Boro Park have a Shabbos Project and host thousands of BTs? #1038425zahavasdadParticipantThere was a decent sized event in Queens and the entire community was asked to avertise and there was some public adversting as well
They were projected to get 200 people, Its likely about 60 showed up
zahavasdadParticipantDo your kids speak and read english. This would be a major issue in moving to the US
zahavasdadParticipantWhere does it say that David and Shlomo did not allow Gerim?
David was the Great-Grandson of Ruth
and Shlomo Married Bas Parah, Queen of Sheba and Naama
All were converts
October 29, 2014 11:02 am at 11:02 am in reply to: When will Boro Park have a Shabbos Project and host thousands of BTs? #1038416zahavasdadParticipantWe all know the famous explanation of what is the difference between Noach and Abraham
Noach kept to himself and did not try to improve anyone else. Avraham went out and sought to tell people about hashem
zahavasdadParticipantI suspect it would be more successful in communities in Europe and other countries where non-religious jews are connected unlike in the US where they are not.
I suspect thats why it worked well in South Africa originally.
zahavasdadParticipantMocking and Humor have been practiced by jews foever, At weddings there were “Fools” who were basically clowns who routinely mocked various jews themes and even the Rabbi
They would often give “Shiurim” mocking the Rabbi and it was taken for what it was.
“Purim Torah” has also been done for a long time.
I dont know why people get so up in arms lately about these things, It was a joke and take it as such
zahavasdadParticipantI saw very few unffiliated jews at the Havdallah Concert. I dont know what was on the feed as we had one in my neighborhood and I was there live
zahavasdadParticipantWe have a Mincha Minyan here comprised of people from differnet communites, Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island . Only Queens it seems did it the way it was intended and even they did not get many people.
Queens did not encourage people to make their own shabbos, but rather in a group event
zahavasdadParticipantWe had community events here. Getting people to host their own first shabbos is not really a good idea. They ran it here like a Shabbaton and the Havdallah concert was like a Kumzitz.
Reading some of these replies reminds me of a flyer I saw, There was a Shiur on the “Halachos of the SHabbos project” with such items like Yayin Nesach and saying a Dvor torah in front of an “Unzniut Woman” as opposed to what Shabbat.com said. Rabbi Klazko also gave rules and they were like Dont discouss certain topics (Like Charedim in the Army and Toeivah) . Sing Songs they guest might know like Havah Negilla and dont get upset if the person does a Malacha or the Phone goes off.
I am no Rav, but I do know that if you a Machmir on Yaayin Nesach and you get upset if a non-religious guest touches it, they are not coming back
