Councilman David G. Greenfield (D-Brooklyn) and Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan) today announced the restoration of $12.1 million for child care vouchers in the Fiscal Year 2013 budget. As a result of this agreement, 4,400 vouchers from slots in Priority 5 and 6 child care programs have been saved, allowing both programs to continue next year for eligible families. This is also good news for child care providers, as the vouchers will have the same value as last year. This successful victory after round-the-clock budget negotiations represents a major win for thousands of yeshiva parents who rely on these vouchers to provide free quality child care for their children. Councilman Greenfield and Speaker Quinn also credited Council Finance Chairman Domenic Recchia, Jr. and General Welfare Chair Annabel Palma for their instrumental role in ensuring the funding was restored.
“Our countless hours of negotiations and work have paid off with a budget that clearly prioritizes the needs of children and families. Eliminating these vital child care programs would have created an unfair burden on working parents throughout New York City, so it was imperative that we found a way to restore this funding. I am thrilled that our steadfast commitment to working parents in New York City has paid off,” said Greenfield.

I think we take it for granted what a extraordinary councilman we have. Mr. Greenfield literally worked overtime (until the early morning hours) all this week to help thousands of parents. On behalf of all yeshiva parents: Thank you Mr. Greenfield!
