Maran Rav Ovadia Said One Who Doesn’t Learn Must Serve in the IDF

ovaAccording to Shas MK Yisrael Atias, Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L told him that any chareidim who are not sitting and learning should serve in the IDF.

Atias made his comments during a stormy committee session as Bayit Yehudi members are trying to pass a new chareidi draft law that includes financial sanctions against chareidim who fail to comply with the draft law.

Yesh Atid members of the committee however are tenacious in their objections to eliminating legal sanctions. Yesh Atid feels that failure to comply with the new draft law must be a viewed as a criminal act with all the consequences of law-breaking.

  1. Maran HaGaon HaRav Ahron Leib Shteinman shlit”a disagrees. Rav Shteinman says even people who are NOT learning should NOT serve in the IDF. He says, due to the terrible risks to ones Yiddishkeit by serving in the zionist army, it is better to run off to India than to allow the law to draft you into the IDF. Even if you are NOT learning. If you would have troubled to read the article to which you referenced us all, you would have seen that Rav Shteinman was being deliberately evasive in his reply to the Yeshiva Bachur.
Secondly, one cannot bring proof as to what Rav Shteinman holds from an article in YWN. YWN is only as reliable as the author of the articles found there, whose reliability is unknown to us. Just because the article with which you take issue is also to be found on YWN, does not mean that it itself is accurate enough to take issue with either.
