Efforts by the Chief Rabbinate Results in the Release of 15 Agunos

divorceBatei din affiliated with the Chief Rabbinate of Israel address recalcitrant husbands on an almost daily basis. Deputy Director of the Agunos Unit of the Chief Rabbinate, Rabbi Asher Ehrentreu, recently traveled to the FSU for a ten-day working visit. B’chasdei Hashem, during his visit he managed to secure a ‘get’ for 15 women.

The rav visited five countries during his visit, meeting with diplomatic officials, Jewish Agency officials, rabbonim and of course recalcitrant husbands.

While the rabbi was in the FSU he also tried to validate the Jewishness of a number of people whose Yiddishkheit is questioned by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.

While the bill of divorce is significant in all cases, in one of the cases addressed by Rav Ehrentreu the women has been an agunah for 13 years. Despite the court order barring her husband from leaving the country, he managed to flee to Caucasia. He has refused to give her a divorce until she sends their children to him. Rabbi Ehrentreu met with the husband and after a long talk, he persuaded him to give the get.

Another case deals with a Netanya woman who has been separated from her husband for over 12 years.

  1. Kol HaKovod! I have been waiting for almost 4 years for my brother in law to give me Chalitzah. Perhaps this Rav can fly to Toronto and convince him as well, although certainly not holding my breath as he will need to come with a very very large payoff.
