UPDATE: EXCAVATIONS HALTED – PHOTOS: Protests, Violence, Arrests & Injuries in Jaffa

[Click HERE for photos] [UPDATE BELOW] Protests against ongoing Israel Antiquities Authority excavations in Jaffa continued today, Wednesday, as the Eida Chareidis and Asra Kadisha remain determined to prevent further chilul kevarim.

Tens of buses left Yerushalayim and reportedly Bnei Brak too, heading to the protest area. On Wednesday morning some 150 people were on hand to decry the chilul kevarim. The most prominent participant was undoubtedly Gavaad Yerushalayim; HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Tuvia Weiss Shlita who felt compelled to participate after the Eida’s HaGaon HaRav Moshe Sternbuch Shlita was hit with police teargas at a protest earlier in the week.

At one point, dozens of protestors stormed police barricades and police responded. Chareidi agencies report dozens of injuries of varying severity and arrests, accusing police of responding with unjustified brutality.

Official sources report seven injuries, including police and photographers.

Senior Electra official Shimon Moalem told the chareidi media that above all, his company is not involved in the controversial dig, as reported earlier. It bailed out when it became apparent that “kodshei Yisrael” were being desecrated. He added that he and his colleagues have the utmost respect for the beis din that convened in Bnei Brak today, pointing out he knows the beis din did not discuss a possible boycott, but it is discussing how it Interprets Electra’s position vis-à-vis the ongoing excavations.

UPDATE 9:15PM IL: According to preliminary information police have informed Deputy Minister Meir Porush that Israel Police have canceled the permit for excavations in Jaffa, ordering contractors to remove their equipment tonight.

After Wednesday’s stormy demonstrations in the presence of Gavaad Yerushalayim R’ Tuvia Weiss Shlita, it appears police realize they cannot contend with increasing violent protests on a daily basis, ordering contractors to reach an agreement with the chareidi tzibur and until such time, the work is halted, effective immediately.

Please forgive this people. They are killing themselves to save YOUR grandparents bones from being desecrated. I’m sure you can understand….

  2. Yesterday there was a protest headed by Satmar Ruv of Williamsburg R’ Zalmen Shlit’’e in Manhattan in front of the Israeli Consul, To Protest against the ongoing Israel Antiquities Authority excavations.

    * Zionism is Not Judaism *

That’s what I call victory for the Torah.

  4. well well #2 – It seems from this report that the Israelis only understand one language…”can someone please provide these people with a job?”, I would say they did a “job well done….” !!!

  5. #5 Right becouse satmer itself dosent couse chillul hashem….efsher they stop theyre machlokes between themselves before they judge others…i cringe everytime there is a article in the newspaper that a fight broke out.

  6. Protests do help.Had there been protests of 100 thousand Jews before the Toeva parade there would be no parade in Jerusalem. The Israelis cannot deal with steady protests. They are worried of the ships coming from Iran. We need to use this to our advantage and demand NO DIGGING OF GRAVES,NO TOEVA PARADE IN JERUSALEM JULY 27,NO CUTTING OF FUNDS TP ULTRA ORTHODOX JEWS,LET THEM CUT THE ARAB WELFARE AND THE MONTHLY MONEY THEY GIVE TO GAZA THESE CHICKEN COWARDS SECULAR ISRAELI BUMS. Now is the time to rally and show our determination for Torah. Rallies in all the major cities as well throughout the world. They need the orthodox jews more than we need them. It is only the orthodox jews that still vote in America for strong politicians that fund Israel. The secular Jews have lost all connection to Jewish values. Lets flex our muscles and threaten the Israeli government to reastore financial support to everyu chareidi yeshiva or we will urge American politicians to cut your 3 billion dollars you get a year. You will see how fast they give in.

When you go to the army and pay taxes ill support you. Where was your protest at Gush Katif? dont think that if you try to hijack the system there wont be repercussions…

  8. To tosh chayim? Huh what repercussions are you talking about. Anyway are you a believing Jew because if not why do WE care what YOU think, and if yes that someone who says “what do talmidei chachomim help us” have no portion in the world to come? These people that sit and learn DO ALOT MORE THEN ANY SOLDIER DOES!

  9. Hershy great greatn idea. The moderator did not allow what i wrote and I am writing again. THe reason it is of utmost importance for people to read. The crime of digging up Kevorim in Eretz Yisrael causes great problems especially in Europe. The Rabbaim and especially Rav Schleisinger from London spends much time every year for years trying to prevent digging up graves and mapping out graves in Europe. The so call liberals causes his work to get increasing harder and more costly. Dear liberal this what you are doing in Eretz Yisrael might cause your grandfather, great grandfather or great great grandfather or mother grave to be come a parking lot or their bones ground up Please for once THINK BEFORE YOU ACT

  10. Rosh Cham,
Why do you think that my friend Heshy 1 hasn’t been in the army, and doesn’t pay taxes? Maybe he did indeed protest at Gush Katif? Why are you attacking him so harshly?
Oh! I guess you understand yourself that these two don’t go together. You yourself understand that being a patriotic citizen to Israel doesn’t work mutually with our Torah Hakdosha. To’eva, Chitutei Shachveh, forcefully mixing the chinuch of secular with chareidim, chilul Shabbos, and so on, can not be joint with our Heilige Torah.
And I’m glad you understand this!…

  11. #15 sorry im a bit biased buy walking to the kotel on shabbat with my gun and passing by Mea Shearim and have people yelling at my GOY and cursing me in yidish which i speak…and dont give me this holier then thou attitude i was once upon a time a chassid then i opened my eyes im shomer torah and mitzvot. you have a chutzpah to call those spardic students not frum

  12. Dear rosh chayim you’re making a big mistake! These sfardim don’t keep shabbos! They are better called chiloni then sfardi!

  13. #16 Rosh Cham
oops! I thought before that I understood you. Forget it! for you I have nothing to comment… sorry! Just keep it up! Carry your gun, speak Yiddish, and pass Me’ah She’arim on Shabbat when you go to the Kotel. YOU”RE DOING GREAT!

(by the way, your trying to put an image as if you’re the you said, but you gotta do it a little better. It all comes by practice…)

Thx fo the input, always looking to improve.

#17 the sephardim in that school are shomer shabbas.
But its more than that there are such horror storys in EY about this type of things. I have a freind whi is in yeshiva and when he made Aliya he changed his name to a more Ashkenaz name so his kids wont have a problem moving into midin Illit.

  15. I have a thoretical question, Lets say you dont live in eretz yisrael, you follow the din of “Diney malchusa kidinay” right? so if you dont belive that the Israeli government is a jewish one, why not treat it as any other place and still follow “dinay malchusa?

  16. “After Wednesday’s stormy demonstrations in the presence of Gavaad Yerushalayim R’ Tuvia Weiss Shlita, it appears police realize they cannot contend with increasing violent protests on a daily basis, ordering contractors to reach an agreement with the chareidi tzibur and until such time, the work is halted, effective immediately.”

    B’H!

  17. If there will be a CONTINUED halt of all digging then I tand corrected when I previously commented that protesting doesn’t help.

However, and I truly hope I’m wrong, knowing the Israelis, they will probably start digging quietly as soon as the heat dies down.

  18. #20 Rosh Cham,
You are deadly wrong! Dina Demalchusa is only to be kept as long as it doesn’t interfere with the Torah – even in different countries. How many of our ancestors returned their soul to heaven for the Torah’s sake. Should it be on the stake at the inquisitions, should it be by the crusades and through out the galus. For your information, all these were laws (Gezaros) inforced by those governments. In our case the Israeli government is inforcing a “Gezarah” of chitutei shachveh, so why consider “Dineh demalchuseh”? But again, I’m replying for other people who want to understand, your just rather want to stay with the question so you just keep it up!
