While Israel Police has purchased the Natso non-invasive speed detectors, it appears traffic offenders needn’t worry just yet. Project 3-Alef of the Interior Ministry and Israel Police calls for the installation of 300 speed detection cameras capable of documenting a vehicle running a traffic signal.
The first stage of the program calls for purchasing 60 systems that detect a vehicle passing over in ground strips followed 10 cameras monitoring traffic signal compliance. The next phase calls for 50 cameras in inter-city routes. The cost to the National Road Safety Authority is estimated at NS 50-60 million.
National Road Safety Authority officials report that after NIS 200 million of NIS 360 million was cut from their operating budget, it lacks the funds to move ahead with the advanced traffic monitoring cameras and systems. As a result of the bleak fiscal realities, the signing of the final paperwork to receive the first system is on hold.
