A number of recent City Hall-ordered demolitions have prompted some avreichim to take their case to gedolim, seeking support for their grievances against Mayor Yaakov Weiss, who ordered illegal home additions removed.

According to a Kikar Shabbat report, a number of avreichim succeeded in meeting with Maran HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita, presenting their case before the Gadol HaDor. They explained that all they wanted to do is to expand their homes a bit, to provide living space, nothing more. They accused the mayor of hard-handed tactics, but R’ Shteinman backed Mayor Asher according to the report, with Maran R’ Shteinman explained residents are compelled to adhere to law and maintain order in the community.

Some officials in City Hall responded to the report, pointing out that the Civil Administration has recently announced it is stripping city engineering responsibilities from Modi’in Illit Mayor Yaakov Gutterman because he simply ignores building violations, as was reported by YWN-ISRAEL. “This will not happen here” they explained.
