Gafne Responds To Shul Attack: They Don’t Want Chareidim In Kiryat Yovel & This Is What It Leads To

Degel Hatorah party chairman MK Moshe Gafne was among the voices of outrage following the news of the Tuesday morning, January 29, 2019 vandalism attack in a shul in the Kiryat Yovel area of Jerusalem. Police crime scene photos clearly show that the attackers cut through a side wall of the steel safe aron kodesh to access the Sifrei Torah, which were thrown on the floor and then cleaning liquids thrown on them to do as much damage as possible. Gafne explains this is the result of years of efforts to prevent chareidim from moving into the neighborhood, possibly taking a blow at the administration of previous mayor, Nir Barkat. “When Bnei Yisrael go down, it is all the way to the end,” Gafne responded on Tuesday, visibly pained by what occurred. He added that the tenacious efforts over years to keep chareidim out has led to a number of deranged individuals to act as they have. Shas chairman Minister Aryeh Deri explained this heinous act undoubtedly strikes a chord with every Jew, stating that it is the Sefer Torah which unites all Jews, from all walks of life, making this attack in the shul that much more potent and painful to one and all. HORROR – SIFREI TORAH THROWN TO THE GROUND: Kiryat Yovel Shul Vandalized!

The SIach Yisrael Shul in the Kiryat Yovel section of Yerushalayim was found desecrated and vandalized on Tuesday morning, in images reminiscent of Kristallnacht R”L. At least four Sifrei Torah were found strewn about on the floor, with the Aron Kodesh vandalized, and signifigant damage done to the Shul. Reactions were heard from many rabbonim and political leaders alike after the horrific photos were released on Tuesday morning, January 29, 2019, showing the extent of the damage and desecration in the Shul. One can see the trouble the vandals went through to commit the horrific acts, as the Aron Kodesh is a steel safe and they cut through the side to get access to the Sifrei Torah R”L. The vandalism was discovered when mispallalim arrived on Tuesday morning, realizing what had occurred during the night. Police forensic experts arrived on the scene to gather evidence while the work began to pick up the Sifrei Torah and sifrei kodesh and begin restoring the shul to its state prior to the attack. Chief Rabbi of Israe HaRav Dovid Lau and Rishon L’Tzion HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Yosef commented: The Jewish heart is horrified at the sight of Sifrei Torah, which are profaned in a terrible disgrace caused by the scoundrels inside the shul. The authorities must turn every stone, reach out to the criminals and take full advantage of the law to prosecute them. “Those who were exposed to the atrocity should accept a fast on themselves or redeem it via tzedaka, and every Jew whose honor of Torah is dear to him, will take upon himself a day of Torah study with a taanis dibur to increase and strengthen the Torah’s glory”. Jerusalem Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi HaRav Aryeh Stern stated, “We were shocked to hear about desecration of the shul in Kiryat HaYovel in Jerusalem. We have no information as to who the criminals have been and who have desecrated the sacraments in an unbelievable way! And an answer will certainly be received from the police investigators. “But it is incumbent on all of us to protest against the perpetrators of the heinous crime we have seen in the difficult years of the Holocaust by the Nazis. Now we must explore our actions and strengthen our atmosphere of unity, of the people living in Tzion. “We all hope that the Hashem Yisborach will forgive us, and even those who hurt the shul will come and ask forgiveness from HKBG and all of Israel. President Reuven Rivlin reacted to the horrific attack, stating, “difficult painful pictures from the Kiryat Yovel shul this morning. I am certain that the Israeli Police will reach those who desecrated the shul and bring them to justice soon, in order to ensure that such sights do not occur.” Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu responded: “I am shocked by the desecration of the shul in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of Jerusalem, and the police must immediately find those responsible to bring them to justice.” אני מזועזע מחילול בית הכנסת בשכונת קריית יובל שבירושלים. על המשטרה למצוא מייד את האחראים לכך כדי למצות איתם את הדין — Benjamin Netanyahu (@netanyahu) January 29, 2019 Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon called on police to act sternly and swiftly to bring the responsible parties to justice. Rachel Azariyah Calls For Removal Of National Authority For Road Safety Signs In Kiryat Yovel

Following the publication of signs on behalf of the National Authority for Road Safety in the mixed neighborhood of Kiryat Yovel, Jerusalem mayoral candidate Rachel Azariah wrote to the Jerusalem Municipality and the authority, demanding that the signs be removed: “Signs that do not display women and girls cannot be the response to the phenomenon in which extremist chareidim tear them down. This is tantamount to giving these extremists a prize. I demand that the municipality and the National Road Safety Authority immediately remove them and place signs in Kiryat Yovel that address both children and children.” Azariah added that, “State authorities cannot cooperate with this extremism. Every girl and woman should know that she is a part of the public domain.” Azariah’s comments follow a period during which chareidi extremists in Yerushalayim tore her campaign posters off of Egged buses as they objected to the adds which show a woman. In addition, the community’s eruv was targeted on Shabbos as well, torn down as was done in past attacks in the ongoing religious was in the community between secularists and chareidim. Kiryat Yovel/Bayit Vegan Eruv Compromised By Vandalism

Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Dov Kalmanovich, who is affiliated with the dati leumi tzibur, on Sunday sent a letter to Jerusalem Police Chief Yehoram Levi pertaining to vandalism to the Kiryat Yovel – Bayit Vegan eruv. In his letter, Kalmanovich explains there has been vandalism to the eruv in recent weeks, and this compromised the erev to both Kiryat Yovel and Bayit Vegan. The letter continues, “This letter joins the letters from Jerusalem Chief Rabbi Aryeh Stern Shlita and the Jerusalem Rabbinate’s head of the eruv unit. “The eruv is the responsibility of the Jerusalem Religious Council, a government body, and therefore, vandalism is a violation of the law that in addition to having impact on religious life and being an offensive to the tzibur’s religious sensitivities. “Of late, there has been growing conflict between Kiryat Yovel’s religious and secular extremists who are working to inflame the fires of hate surrounding these religious issues. “I call upon you to act to apprehend the extremists responsible, and to bring them to justice.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Mayor’s Plans For Kiryat Yovel And Ramat Eshkol Approved – Chareidi Schools In Adjoining Communities

Some news for Jerusalem residents of Kiryat Yovel and Ramat Eshkol. The District Committee approved Mayor Nir Barkat’s plan for the construction of public and cultural buildings for the dati leumi tzibur in the Warburg complex, which he feels will strengthen Kiryat Yovel and the Education Center for all sectors. Within the framework of the Kiryat HaYovel program, student dormitories will be established, a home for the lone soldier, a pre-army preparatory building and a graduates’ area, a cultural center, a cafeteria and a communal café and community garden. In addition, the mayor decided to establish a new dati leumi torani school in Kiryat Yovel and to expand the state school of experimental Argentina in a neighborhood that has become an educational and cultural anchor for the dati leumi sector in the neighborhood. In addition, the District Committee approved the plan for the Education Campus in Ramat Eshkol. As part of the plan, an educational complex will be established that will provide a solution for the chareidi and dati leumi sectors. The compound will include an educational complex for the chareidi, an educational site for the dati leumi sector that will include an educational institution and an academic college. In addition, the nearby soccer field will be renovated for the benefit of the neighborhood residents. The transfer of the Warburg Plan and the Ramat Eshkol Plan in the District Committee is part of the outline of a groundbreaking series led by Mayor Nir Barkat in recent months in cooperation with the community administrations and representatives of the sectors that regulates the preservation of the character of the neighborhoods and reduces the friction between the sectors while providing optimal responses to the educational and community needs of the various populations. The plan can be implemented now, due to the Municipality’s actions to reduce thousands of classrooms and reduce physical gaps that increase the budgetary pie and reduce friction. In the merit of the existence of public leadership in the two sectors under the leadership of the mayor and in cooperation with him, they feel the two sectors can operate under one leadership and successfully manage life in Jerusalem. Mayor Nir Barkat stated that “the approval of the public and cultural buildings for the dati leumi public in the Warburg complex and the Kiryat Chinuch (Educational Center) for all the sectors in Ramat Eshkol are in large numbers that will strengthen the neighborhoods. We are at the conclusion of a historic process. In a way that gives hope to all the sectors to continue to grow, not one at the expense of the other. Instead of a discourse of war over the remains of everyone’s flesh, we are moving to the discourse of bringing real peace that will allow everyone to grow, that is what most of the public wants, and not to permit extremists from either side to lead us. I admit on all sides there are extremists that will never accept any plan. It does not matter what the preference is, but always opting for war. However, this is the correct and good thing for the capital. In the framework of the plan, there will not be an exclusive chareidi school built [with the exception of kindergarten] in a secular area, but the solution will be given in the adjacent

Kiryat Yovel Parents Fighting For School Building For Girls – Fears Of Exposure To Radiation Result In Machlokes

It was over a year ago that Jerusalem City Hall officials objected to establishing a Beit Yaakov School in the Warburg plot in Kiryat Yovel, a decision that led to much anger among residents who insisted they are in dire need of space for a school for their children. The parents have been fighting an uphill battle for a school in their neighborhood to avoid having their children having to commute elsewhere. The battle however continued and this led to the city renting a temporary building to serve as a school, located on Frank Street in Bayit Vegan, the building that to date served as Talmud Torah Achiezer. Until the school enters its permanent structure, the city rented the former Yeshivas Be’er HaTorah building on HaPisgah Street in Bayit Vegan. Over recent months, work was done to modify it to accommodate the school’s needs. However, parents have recently learned that there are cellular telephone antennas on the roof of the building and they fear this will place their children at risk. Parents active in the battle question how City Hall could even entertain placing hundreds of children in a building that hosts so many cellular telephone antennas on its roof. “It is not enough that [Jerusalem Mayor Nir] Barkat will not allocate a building for our children in Kiryat Yovel, but he wants to send them to a building in another community that poses hazards from antenna emissions”, said a parent active in the battle for another venue. City Hall has yet to respond. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

Mifletzet Bar & Café At The Heart Of Tensions In Kiryat Yovel

The Mifletzet Bar & Café in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of the capital opened last summer, becoming a hot spot for Chilul Shabbos in the growing chareidi area. It is named after the popular Mifletzet (Monster) playground in the community. The bar/café is owned by a local cooperative that has 72 shareholders, most young area residents who had an interest in launching the non-profit enterprise located in the complex that houses the community council. The operation is open on Shabbos. The bar has a fire department and other permits but has not been granted an operating license. Owners explain that have waited years and finally made the decision to open, providing a bus entertainment schedule for residents as it operates as a café during the day and pub at night. Residents explain it provides an entertainment venue without have to go to the center of the city. As the chareidi community grew, the calls were heard for the closure of the Shabbos entertainment venue. A closure order was issued after chareidi councilmen explained it was a violation of the Shabbos status quo. Operators closed this past week but promise to fight the order. The closure sparked small local protests. City Hall explains the closure was due to operating a business without a license. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

Kiryat Yovel Community Council Head Steps Down Under Mounting Pressure

A few days after senior Kiryat Yovel Community Council official Yechiel Levy spoke to Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) about ousting chareidim from his community, Mr. Levy has stepped down, resigning his senior post. Levy told Galei Tzahal his policy was to “choke the chareidim” and deprive them of services to the point they will opt to leave the area. His words led to an outcry with chareidi MKs and ministers calling to oust him from his post. He came under criticism from President Reuven Rivlin and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat called to oust him. Levy submitted his letter of resignation to the head of his council, using it to apologize again. He explained his remarks do not truly represent who he is but his apology following the incident did nothing to calm the calls to oust him. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

Chareidim Insist On Firing Kiryat Yovel Community Council: Kiryat Yovel Community Council Leader’s Words Are Representative Of Mayor Barkat

Jerusalem Councilman Rabbi Eliezer Reichenberg told Kol Berama Radio on Wednesday 26 Shevat that Kiryat Yovel community council official Yechiel Levy must be ousted from his post following his interview on Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) on Tuesday. During the interview, Levy explained his systematic plan to embitter the lives of chareidim in Kiryat Yovel towards getting them to leave. Reichenberg explains no apology can be accepted and he must be removed from his post. The councilman’s words are in line with statements heard a day earlier from Minister Aryeh Deri and Yaakov Litzman, as well as Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat. Chareidi party heads sent a letter to Mr. Aviad Friedman, who heads the community councils. Both Yahadut Hatorah and Shas officials in the city government signed the letter. Levy also sent a letter to Friedman on Tuesday, in which he expresses sorrow and remorse over his statements. “There is no justification for what I said and the words do not represent who I am” he wrote, adding he has been a faithful public servant for decades. Kiryat Yovel Official Working Hard To Oust The Chareidim

The person in charge of the Kiryat Yovel minhelet, the local community council, is working very hard to do everything possible to keep out addition chareidi families and to compel those in the community to back their bags and get out. The situation for the many frum families in the Jerusalem neighborhood is not an easy one, actually it is quite difficult at times. On Tuesday morning 25 Shevat the director of the local community council, Yechiel Levy, was interviewed on Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) and he used the opportunity to explain his modus operandi. He explained that by making life miserable for the chareidim, they will want to leave the community. “This is the method that works today – choking them” he stated. He explained that deprivation of services will create a level of frustration until they leave the area. He proudly explained that the Shabbos airing of movies hosted by the local council are held in chareidi areas to show them ‘who is the boss” despite the fact there is an understanding between the chareidi and secular families in that area. Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Yossi Deutsch then got on the air and accused Levy of anti-Semitism as he espoused his hate for an entire tzibur over the air. Deutsch explained that Levy’s position is funded by the Education Ministry and Jerusalem City Hall and a person such as Levy should not be permitted to remain in his public position, “not even for an hour”. Deutsch added “If one spoke out like this against any other sector, Ethiopians or Arabs, taking about ‘choking them until they get out’, not providing them with services they are entitled to in the hope of ousting them – there would be a public outcry as there should be in this case. “Everyone would be demanding his dismissal. He should receive a letter [of dismissal] from the Minister of Education and the Mayor within the hour” Deutsch added. Following the interview on Galei Tzahal, Health Minister Yaakov Litzman stated his words representing ‘crossing a red line’ and he poses a real danger to the welfare of the tzibur and Mayor Nir Barkat and Education Minister Naftali Bennett must act to dismiss him immediately as “the man is not suited for the job. His words are echoed by Mayor Nir Barkat and Shas leader Aryeh Deri. President Reuven Rivlin has also spoken out harshly against Levy’s statements aired on Galei Tzahal. Deputy Mayor Pindrus Addresses The Conflict In Kiryat Yovel

Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Yitzchak Pindrus at a city council meeting on Wednesday night 18 Elul discussed the machlokes that continues between the frum and secular residents of the city’s Kiryat Yovel neighborhood. He explained to his colleagues that he is personally willing to sit down at a negotiating table in the hope of working out the problems but he will not agree to a situation in which the chareidi residents of the city do not receive the services they are entitled to. He stressed the latter is not a precondition to negotiations to end the machlokes in Kiryat Yovel, and that one does not try to prevent chareidim from moving to a specific area by denying services that every citizen is entitled to, and this is the situation in Kiryat Yovel today. “The concept of closing a theater in the hope of chasing one out of the capital is not acceptable. The concept of depriving a child of a school or kindergarten is equally unacceptable” he added. This Pindrus lamented is the operational methodology of the Kiryat Yovel ‘minhelet’ neighborhood council, which feels by depriving a certain group of services the members of that group will leave the area, which is the council’s goal. “Such behavior only benefits us political and does not deliver you the desired results” he added. Parents Are Planning A Private School In Jerusalem’s Kiryat Yovel Neighborhood

Residents of the controversial Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of the capital have announced they are opening a private school for the coming school year as they are tired of their children having to travel to a different neighborhood to attend a chareidi school. The problem stems from the reality that over the past decade, the community is becoming increasingly chareidi and the veteran secular residents are fighting to prevent the continuing trend. Jerusalem Councilman (Shas) Tzvika Cohen explained to Kol Chai Radio on Sunday morning 3 Menachem Av “one must understand. Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat was backed and elected with certain understandings, one being a commitment not to open a chareidi school in Kiryat Yovel”. Cohen explains for as long as a chareidi mayor was not elected, the chareidi tzibur must understand certain realities exist and this is included in that group. Cohen holds the city’s chareidi education portfolio. At present, the climate in the community among the significant chareidi tzibur is that the school is going to be opened “at all costs” and they are willing to go to war over the matter – simply fed up with having to bus their children. Cohen explains that while he personally backs the initiative, the fact remains that as a councilman, there is little he can do for as long as Barkat remains opposed to a chareidi school in Kiryat Yovel and he does not believe chareidi pressure is going to change this any time soon. Cohen added that work is taking place at this time to open another school in Bayit Vegan which is close to Kiryat Yovel and it will be a proper school with regulation classrooms. Cohen explains the building is intended to serve first to fourth graders from Kiryat Yovel as well as relieving the overcrowding in the current school in Bayit Vegan. Cohen remains confident the new Bayit Vegan venue will be ready in time for the opening of the school year. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

VIDEO: A Look At Kiryat Yovel’s Yeshivas Chachmei Lev For Chareidim

Yeshiva Chachmei Lev is located in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of Yerushalayim, a school that is perhaps representative of the new trend, offering those who do not wish to remain in beis medrash all day an alternative. In this high school the talmidim maintain their chareidi identity but they will graduate will a full bagrut matriculation exam. Some will enter the IDF as well. Channel 2 correspondent Dana Weiss gives us an inside look at the yeshiva and the rabbonim who boldly stand behind the school amid the awareness there is a large number of youths who wish to remain chareidim without being compelled to sit and learn all day to the exclusion of all secular subjects. The school currently numbers 60 talmidim and it is an uphill battle for the chareidim of Kiryat Yovel do not want them as is the case in other frum neighborhoods. Neighbors fear that the presence of the school will attract others but as Rabbi Betzalel Cohen explains, the needs for such schools exists and it is time to come to terms with this. Jerusalem City Hall Does Not Prevent Renewed Airing of Movies on Shabbos in Kiryat Yovel R’L

The fight to stop city-sponsored airing of movies in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of Jerusalem continues. Chareidi councilmen were led to believe the movies shown in the Kiryat Yovel community council on Friday nights for non-religious residents would stop, and they did for a period of time. It has now been learned the community council has decided to renew the program. The vote passed because City Hall representatives and Mayor Barkat abstained. Mr. Yechiel Levy, who heads the community council confirms the vote passed and the Friday night movies will resume. Efforts to reach an understanding with chareidim failed, partly because elections are scheduled in the city’s minhalot community councils. The mayor reached an agreement, that the movies would stop for two months to permit talks in the hope of reaching agreement but this did not pan out. As a result, movies are set for this coming Shabbos. This has led to anger among the chareidi city councilmen, having learned the city representatives could have prevented it but they abstained in the vote. They are now blaming the mayor for giving a green light to renewed public chilul Shabbos, which is sponsored by the city’s arm, the local community council. City officials explain elections will be held soon and this will determine the character of the members of the local councils, which will then set policy in each community. Chareidim Call to Shut Down Kiryat Yovel Minhelet Over Continued Chilul Shabbos

The frum residents of the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of the capital have been fighting an uphill battle since the first ones moved in as there are elements in the community strongly opposed to the new religious atmosphere that prevails. They fought to establish minyanim and in the early days, were often compelled to appear in court for violating zoning laws, hosting minyanim in apartments. One of the strongholds of the old non-religious lifestyle appears to by the minhelet, the local community council that has much to say about the goings-on in the community. Despite a directive from City Hall against sponsoring chilul Shabbos entertainment, the minhelet continues to offer residents movies on Friday night. This is rapidly leading to a coalition crisis in Jerusalem City Hall as the chareidi councilmen have given Mayor Nir Barkat a two-week ultimatum, to stop the movies and shut down the minhelet or they are pulling out of the coalition government. Last Shabbos, hundreds of shomer Shabbos residents protested outside the minhelet when the movies were aired. This past Sunday, 7 Shevat, 16 members of Yahadut Hatorah, Shas, Bnei Torah and Bayit Yehudi serving in the Jerusalem City Council formulated a letter to the mayor, calling upon him to act as well as to cut any and all funding to the minhelet. They explained the chilul Shabbos is intolerable and a gross violation of the long-standing religious status quo in the city as the minhelet is an arm of the city government. Councilman Yitzchak Pindrus was of the opinion the minhelet must be brought down and Kiryat Yovel represents a watershed compelling the mayor to choose; either enforcing the religious status quo or lose the religious parties in his coalition. Councilman Chaim Epstein called for a total cessation of all chilul Shabbos in all city institutions. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

Continued Kiryat Yovel Chilul Shabbos May Lead to City Coalition Crisis

Jerusalem Councilman (Yahadut Hatorah) Yitzchak Pindrus has given Mayor Nir Barkat an ultimatum, two weeks to stop the airing of movies in the Kiryat Yovel minhelet on Friday nights. Mayor Nir Barkat has released public statements calling on the Kiryat Yovel local community council (minhelet) to stop offering movies to area residents on Friday nights. http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/news/headlines-breaking-stories/371268/jerusalem-mayor-barkat-orders-shutting-shabbos-movies-in-kiryat-yovel-minhal.html However the movies continue, as was the case this past Shabbos http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/news/headlines-breaking-stories/374070/kiryat-yovel-community-council-continues-to-air-movies-on-shabbos.html and the frum councilman is unwilling to tolerate the mayor’s blasé attitude much longer, hence the two-week ultimatum. Deutsch announced the ultimatum during an interview with Noam Zeigman on Kol Berama Radio. The ultimatum comes at a time when more and more businesses are opening on Shabbos R”L in the capital despite City Hall insisting the religious status quo is being maintained. This past Shabbos, Parshas Bo, hundreds of mispallalim held a protest at the minhelet against the chilul Shabbos. Deutsch explained that he cannot permit this to continue and if the mayor cannot stop the chilul Shabbos, he will do his utmost to pull Yahadut Hatorah out of the city coalition government. Some members of the frum parties in the city council are expected to meet on Sunday evening to discuss a plan of action, which includes cutting funding to the Kiryat Yovel minhelet. Kiryat Yovel: Community Council Continues to Air Movies on Shabbos

Adherence to the so-called religious status quo in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of the capital was ignored on yet another Shabbos as the minhelet community center once again R”L offered free movies to interested residents of Shabbos Kodesh. Despite a directive from Mayor Nir Barkat to halt the movies, explaining the religious status quo must be maintained, the local government appears to prefer to continue offering movies in the mixed neighborhood as the shomer Shabbos community within Kiryat Yovel continues to grow. A minhelet in a respective neighborhood is viewed as an extension of City Hall and is compelled to adhere to directives from City Hall but in this case, the secularist activists appear more interested in preventing their neighborhood from joining the growing chareidi population in Yerushalayim. Jerusalem Councilman (Bayit Yehudi) Dov Kalmanovich decried the Shabbos movies and the minhelet’s disregard for directives from City Hall. He stated a body operating under the control of City Hall may not continue doing as it wishes in total defiance of the directives from the mayor’s office. Kalmanovich adds the movies are a gross violation of the religious status quo to which the administration remains committed. Kalmanovich on Sunday, 22 Teves, held a kenos to strengthen shmiras Shabbos in the capital attended by Rabbi Chaim Druckman Shlita and roshei yeshivos affiliated with Bnei Akiva. Also in attendance were Jerusalem Chief Rabbi Aryeh Stern Shlita and Petach Tikvah Chief Rabbi Micha Halevy Shlita. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

Chareidim Angered Over New Israel Scouts Branch in Kiryat Yovel

Jerusalem City Hall this week proudly announced the opening of a new branch of the Israel Scouts, in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood. Chareidi City Councilman R’ Shlomo Rosenstein sent an angry letter to Mayor Nir Barkat, pointing out that while he celebrates the new scouts’ facility, the discrimination against the growing number of chareidim in Kiryat Yovel continues. In his harshly written letter to the mayor Rosenstein writes “Today I saw the photos of the housewarming of the Kiryat Yovel scouts. There is no limit to the chutzpah and shame. The 1,500 chareidi families in the neighborhood are regularly and systematically discriminated against in an apartheid fashion regarding all activities pertaining to the local minhal (community government) and this is all with silent support of the mayor and the city administration”. Rosenstein continues, explaining that while there is joy over the new scouts’ facility, the chareidi children are subjected to deplorable conditions. “I saw the smiles of the participants in the housewarming who were aware of yet another victory against the chareidim in the city administration for they are unable to advance anything, even towards preventing the discrimination against the children”. Rosenstein explains the victory for the anti-chareidim is twofold as they have their scouting facility and thereby prevent the chareidim from using another building. He speaks of the apartheid policies when it comes to Kiryat Yovel’s chareidi families, and how City Hall “spits in our faces, laughs at us, and smiles for the cameras for another structure perpetuates the shame”. Chareidim Face an Uphill Battle in Jerusalem’s Kiryat Yovel Neighborhood

The battle against the growing chareidi presence in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood of Yerushalayim continues as there is now opposition to authorization given to a number of daycare centers serving the chareidi tzibur. The city’s planning council this past week authorized a number of chareidi daycare centers. The city coalition was divided as representatives of the mayor abstained. The representatives of the Hisorarus party opposed the authorization and the chareidim supported it. As a result the authorization was granted for a five-year period. Hisorarus officials’ are angered as they continue their battle against the chareidim. Deputy Mayor (Hisorarus) Ofir Berkowitz has begun circulating a petition and launched a Facebook effort calling on his supporters in Kiryat Yovel to fight the authorization given retroactively for the chareidi daycare centers. He explains the community is at a ‘critical junction” and if the chareidim are not stopped the area will be overrun by the chareidi presence. Berkowitz explains the planning committee is controlled by Yahadut Hatorah and this is how the chareidim succeeded in having the illegal daycare centers authorized retroactively. Berkowitz warns his supporters that the decision will impact the character of the community and residents mustn’t remain apathetic. “We have a mandate from the tzibur to protect on the character of Yerushalayim, to protect the regular neighborhoods of the city. We, those who voted for the mayor, wish to remind him. We and many others support him”. “We feel efforts must be made to find solutions for the chareidi public, quality solutions, in the neighborhood of Bayit Vegans, which is near Kiryat Yovel. It is only 550 meters away. This will permit us to protect the community and any attempt that poses a threat to the delicate balance by authorizing the illegal daycare centers, are improper for Jerusalem and improper government rule”. Berkowitz concludes, “Come and sign the petition and clarify to the mayor just what Kiryat Yovel residents want. Jerusalem is important to us and the decision must be changed! Together we can influence and secure the future of the character of the neighborhood”. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

Shabbos Café Coming to Kiryat Yovel

It appears that a number of politically active secularists have succeeded in obtaining City Hall approval to operate a café in the Kiryat Yovel area of Yerushalayim. This café will be operating all week, including Shabbos. The café will operate like a co-op and residents will buy shares and man the business. The idea reportedly came from Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, who told reporters in the past “Jerusalem should resemble Berlin, Amsterdam and Dublin where they have pubs and cafes under almost every apartment building.” The organizers feel that they have found a way to prevent chareidi opposition, indicating they will not accept cash on Shabbos but prepaid cards that can be punched by employees when a purchase is made. Secularists Continue their Kiryat Yovel Battle

The secularists affiliated with the Free Jerusalem Party are continuing their efforts against the growing chareidi community in the capital’s Kiryat Yovel neighborhood, calling on Mayor Nir Barkat to cut funding to the chareidi community center in the area, releasing offensive materials that support a continuation of the “ghetto policies that existed in Europe” against the local chareidi community, the daily HaMevaser reports. The secularists decry the ongoing efforts by Yahadut HaTorah and Shas, which they insist result in compromised rights for the non-frum community in the city in general, and in Kiryat Yovel in particular. Councilman Yosef Deutsch is quoted as explaining efforts by the non-frum to depict Kiryat Yovel’s chareidi community as an insignificant number of residents will not succeed, for in actuality, the chareidim represent a prominent number of the community’s residents. Deutsch is quoted as adding that Yahadut HaTorah and Shas will make sure that the area’s chareidim will receive what they are entitled to as other residents in the community and throughout the city. Chalk Up a Victory for Jerusalem City Hall in Kiryat Yovel

Jerusalem City Hall officials are boasting a victory after succeeded in temporarily halting the building plan in the Kiryat Yovel area of the city. The city opposed the planned construction of 53 exclusive homes on a plot of land in the growing frum community, seeking to build more affordable housing in line with Mayor Nir Barkat’s master housing plan. The Jerusalem District Court last week ruled in favor of the city, seeking to halt the exclusive project. The court on Thursday froze the building tender, permitting the city to present its master plan for the plot of land within 60 days. The mayor turned to Housing Minister Ariel Atias a number of weeks ago requesting that he hold off on the exclusive project to permit the city to use the land for 300 affordable housing units  for  young couples, in line with ongoing city efforts to prevent the young from leaving the capital. Kiryat Yovel Eruv Battle Heading for Court

The battle surrounding the growing chareidi presence in Yerushalayim’s Kiryat Yovel neighborhood is now once again focusing on the eruv, and the matter is headed for court. Many believed the relative quiet over recent weeks was a good sign, but it now appears the quiet may have been the quiet before the storm and the anti-chareidi elements have been working diligently behind the scene preparing their next legal challenge to the growing frum community. The secular activists whom have been spearheading the battle against the mehadrin eruv are now signaling the days of protests may be on hold, as they prepare for a legal battle. The suit appears to target Jerusalem City Hall. About six weeks ago, police summoned eight secular activists from the area, some being members of the organization leading the anti-chareidi battle. They were questioned for their alleged part in downing a portion of the mehadrin eruv, taking the law into their own hands. They also resorted to violence when some were detected by chareidi residents as they were engaged in destroying the eruv. The city has since removed 80 mehadrin eruv poles, which City Hall explains were placed without permission and the “pirate poles” were therefore taken away. Mayor Nir Barkat has been seeking to promote dialogue, explaining he will not permit “extremists’ from either side to take the law into their own hands. Officials affiliated with the city’s mehadrin eruv project admit it is most unlikely to find a court exhibiting sympathy towards the mehadrin eruv, and they fear the progress made that led to some agreement with City Hall will be lost as well if a court contradicts such agreements in its ruling. Mayor Barkat Calls on Minister Atias to Delay Kiryat Yovel Tender

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat turned to Housing Minister (Shas) Ariel Atias requesting that he delay building tenders on 53 housing units in the Kiryat Yovel area of the capital. It appears the city wishes to present an alternative plan, to build 300 units on the same land plot. This is in line with the mayor’s policy, preferring to build affordable housing for the young over exclusive housing for the wealthy. According to City Hall officials, the plan for 300 units is supported by community planning officials and local board, with the awareness there are many young couples and other in search of affordable housing. Askanim however explain this from a different angle, that there is “a person” on the local board who is not a fan of chareidim, and supporting the city’s plan is another way to keep chareidim away. On the other hand, others who are not opposed to chareidim question why young chareidi couples cannot take advantage of affordable housing, seeking to sell the mayor’s plan as advantageous for the chareidi sector as well. In his letter to Atias, the mayor explains he wishes to maximize the plot of land to the maximum in line with the city’s plan to add many affordable housing units to the community. The current Israel Lands Administration plan does not maximize the available land the city. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Arrest Made in Kiryat Yovel Eruv Sabotage Attack

With shabbos on the horizon, things are heating up in Jerusalem’s Kiryat Yovel neighborhood. A resident was arrested on Thursday after he was apprehended sabotaging the Jerusalem Religious Council eruv. The suspect, 25-year-old engineering student Ilan Englis was apprehended, seen as he was tearing the eruv in the neighborhood where secularist are championing their battle to prevent their neighborhood from becoming chareidi. Englis was also present last week during an anti-chareidi rally at Mt. Herzl. Englis remain in lock up during the night, refusing to cooperate with police, and in the morning, police requested he be released on bail with an order to distance himself from the eruv poles and conflict. The defendant’s attorney told the daily Haaretz that the arrest of his client is an “outrage”, questioning how one is placed under arrest for cutting a few “illegal strings”. He stressed such an occurrence is totally “unacceptable in a democratic society”. Several dozen neighborhood residents siding with the accused protested outside the Russian Compound Detention Center in support of English. Last year, a university professor was arrested after it was learned that he sabotaged the eruv. The frum community in Kiryat Yovel has indeed endured difficulties, abuse and unprovoked hatred from neighbors, who appear threatened by their frum lifestyle. Sadly, such incidents seem to serve as a springboard for anti-religious elements to join the battle for the sake of inflaming the movement against shmiras shabbos and a life of adherence to Torah and mitzvos. Kiryat Yovel Residents Go Legal with New Shul

After enduring much hardship and continuing the battle with mesirus nefesh, the residents of Jerusalem’s Kiryat Yovel neighborhood celebrated the opening of their new shul, a shul that enjoys legal status and will be free from the legal conflict surrounding the rapidly growing chareidi area. The minyan began in a private home and after much difficulty, legal battles and opposition in the street from secularists, has finally been granted legal status in a neighborhood building. The event was marked with a hachnasas Sefer Torah last week. The procession began in the private home that served as the first shul, to its new legal location approved by Jerusalem City Hall. The Torah was dedicated in memory of the avreich R’ Bentzion Devoratz, purchased by attorney Refael Shtub who has been representing the local kehillah pro bono. The ceremony was approved by the municipality, and police were on hand to ensure the procession was not marred by those who oppose the growing chareidi presence in the area. The completion of the Sefer Torah took place a week earlier, with Maran Rav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv Shlita participating. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Shabbos Movies May Launch New Conflict in Kiryat Yovel

According to a Makor Rishon report, secularist activists in Jerusalem’s Kiryat Yovel neighborhood are seeking permission to use a municipality facility to air movies on shabbos. When Deputy Mayor David Hadari heard of the request, he did not hesitate and turned immediately to Kobi Cohen, who is responsible for the city’s community centers. He called upon Cohen not to be a part of changing the status quo as well as explaining such a move would significantly increase tensions in the already racially divided community. Hadari stated to begin airing movies on shabbos in a city facility is unacceptable and a serious shift in the status quo, adding he grew up in Kiryat Yovel, a resident of 25 years, stating the community as he knew it was a model of dual existence, frum and non-frum living side-by-side. Meretz Councilman Pepe Alalu has become involved, giving his approval for airing shabbos movies. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)
