This is the last thing I’ll say about this.

I applaud your stand against chillul shabbos, however, it shouldn’t come at the expense of labeling someone a mechallel shabbos on the flimsiest of evidence.

The only troll I plan on talking about now, is the one from the 3 billy goats gruff.

You just don’t get it. You can spoof an IP address. You can share that information with all your friends.

The point is, you (the moderators) have the flimsiest of evidence to label someone a mechalel shabbos yet did so.

I’m not certain evidence was offered that this user was even a troll.

In all likelihood this person is back on YWN with another IP address and another username reading this and laughing at how we are still talking about this.

Just saw an AP video of this story on Huffington Post. Ignoring the one narrating the video just watching the scenes taped, begs the question, why so many obviously litvishe bachurim are hanging around on the sidewalk around the area of the Toldos Avram Yitzchak Beis Medrash (thats the BM that is shown in the video)? They appear to be egging on the few people who are obviously part of the group the story is about and who the cameraman is trying to tape. Having second, third and fourth doubts about allowing my own sons to go to E”Y.

“The only things we’re arguing about is:”

    You keep ignoring….

One can spoof an IP address.

You can keep changing your IP address by logging in and out of free proxy websites that are a dime a dozen online.

2 friends can share a log in ID and be on opposite ends of the world. Yes, it might be against the YWN TOS, but it can easily be done.

Nobody has any issues with you stading up for kavod shabbos. What I, and others, take issue with, is the labeling of a specific user as a mechallel shabbos based on the flimsiest of evidence, despite the denials of this user.

If, as is claimed, this girl was walking with her mother who was not dressed appropriately which provoked the response, why didn’t this fellow spit at the mother? Why the girl?

So, I hope the moderators have followed up on their brilliant detective work and have alerted the appropriate people.

Why the moderators shared this info with you is puzzling given that they are (almost always) very careful as it relates to lashon hara and rechilus and it served no toeles to tell you their suspicion and it led you to post it publicly which resulted in the fingering of a particular user as a mechallel shabbos, something which that user denies.

If you think someone is concealing any information from you, that you deem important, ask about it. If you are not satisfied with the answer and won’t get a more satisfactory answer, move on. The question posed here, is should you volunteer information, if not asked about it. I asked about one of these “deal breaker” type qualities and was told that if I knew for certain this is something (in this case) the girl calls a deal breaker, I must tell her even if she doesn’t ask about it, the reason I was given is that, since it is known they consider it a deal breaker, they don’t even ask about it, the Rav continued, has anyone ever asked if the prospective shidduch is shomer shabbos, it is assumed one would not suggest a mechallel shabbos so they don’t ask, same is true in the situation I asked about.

To mr spleen. In your situation, if I ever suggest a shidduch to you, I will be sure to foward certified copies of a birth certificate and most recent physical that includes height and weight, and of course a full frontal photo so you can be assured she isn’t fat or younger than stated.

Who asked you to date a fat girl or one who doesn’t show up with a certified copy of her birth certificate? In the mean time, girls will be sure to stay away from smokers.

One would. Problem is, the smoker won’t be around very long.

Flowers. One can learn much from google, including plenty about yiddishkeit. But that is irrelevent. There is an assumption of guilt because the men from U.N.C.L.E. traced an IP address despite the fact that such things can easily be spoofed.

If the boy is trying to hide it then don’t bother telling the girl he is a smoker, he has a bigger problem you must tell her, he is a liar.

    Jothar. The man from U.N.C.L.E.

Ever hear of spoofing an IP address (it is something Trolls would do)? Ever hear of a static IP address? Not everyone uses DHCP as efficient as it is. One can ask their ISP for a static IP. I have a static IP address from my wireless provider, and can be anywhere in the world with my blackberry, as far as I know, with the same IP address (certainly anywhere in the USA or Canada). The “evidence” you have is flimsy, but if you are comfortable with it, call the local Australian Hatzala and tell them not to answer his or her call on shabbos.

When we lived in a building, we felt that the lobby was a shared space belonging to all tennants, not the super or landlord. As such, we didn’t like it that “our” lobby was decorated for their holiday and we decorated “our” lobby for our holiday as well. The tennants were split about 50/50 between those who celebrated chanukah and those who celebrated christmas.

Sure she can, she can also ask him all the silly superficial questions peope ask the shadchan and references too. There is a reason people ask or expect to be told certain basic info, so as not to waste anyones time. I think this falls into that category.

The flower shaped floaters work for me. Also, narrower cups that don’t allow the floaters much room on either side seem to work well. I have had the misfortune of having many sinking floaters that had lots of space to move around in the cup, one jump in the room and oil goes over a side and tips it over.

I personally have no problem saying the words, christ, christmas or jesus (I dont believe the concept of “yemach shmo” can be applied to a mythical figure who surely did not exist as is portrayed by the gospels – but I digress, this is not the place to discuss the roots and origins of christianity). I just wont use the words jesus and christ together.

It is not a question of PC though. It is deeply rooted in the mindset of yidden that atrocities committed in the name of jesus against jews have taken place for 2000 years and as a result there is an automatic reflex that shuns anything by or about him. It is a natural reflex to avoid it.

“because girls know that most boys smoke,”

You would have more credibilityif you claimed most yeshiva boys will be going to midnight mass, tomorrow night. Your statement surely ranks as one of the single most spurrious and ridiculous claims ever made on this site.

It is NOT something a girl can find out on her own, if a guy deliberately wants to hide it until after an engagement or marriage. It is not like a pronounced limp or a lisp that she will figure out rather quickly.

I don’t see any reason why it would be assur to tell a girl if you knew for certain that a guy smoked. The guy doesn’t feel there is anything wrong with it if he smokes publicly.

There are several items up in the air here the way I see it.

. At what age is it appropriate to “force” a boy to go to shul

. What is appropriate incentive to get a boy to go to shul before the age of forcing him

. Is missing school an appropriate incentive

I think the answers appropriate for my own sons are:

    . 13

. Nothing if he will be miserable while there

. Not for attendance in shul

Every boy is different and each situation should be treated for the unique case that it is.

Why are we discussing this? Are we trying to help someone with shmiras shabbos? If not, why don’t we just start a thread ridiculing all non shomer shabbos jews. If the moderators are so concerned perhaps ammend the TOS that mechalleli shabbos are not allowed to post into CR and such posts are simply not approved.

Christ is the english (latin?) rendering of the greek christos which means annointed one (the greek translation of the word moshiach – most english translations of the christian bible, what they call the NT are translated from latin, which is translated from greek).

I would imagine the numbers used by NASI in their “game changer” are not arbitrary and were not pulled out of a hat. I would imagine they are based on a formula that considers among other things time and/or energy expended and a rate per hour (so to speak) and possibly also considers expenses incurred. If for example, on avg, 30% less time is spent by a shadchan on a 20 year old compared to a 22 year then the shadchanus for a 20 year old is 70% of the NASI rate for a 22 year old?

Was working as a mashgiach in a not so well known kitchen. I walked into the kitchen to begin my shift at 4pm. Supper preparations were well under way. The Rav Hamachshir happened to come in with me. He saw something on the grill and asked the mashgiach who was going off shift what was on the grill. He replied, they are grilling burgers for dinner. He was promptly fired. (They were kashering livers!)

For every “horror story”, there are thousands of vigilant mashgichim making sure you are not eating treif daily. Dont panic.

“i mean one hopes that one would acquire good middos through learning torah…”

One would surely hope this is the case, but if nobody considers it important, or of secondary importance to shirt color or size of hat brim, then it eventually loses importance as a goal and as an ideal.
