The only “fact” that should concern anyone is what their own Rav has to say about this inyan.
apushatayidParticipant“how often do you eat cholent?”
As often as my wife serves it.
apushatayidParticipantBottom line. Has anyone changed their opinion regarding their use of the BP Eruv because of this thread? Why is everyone going at it with such gusto? Halevay everyone would work on their ahavas yisroel with such gusto.
apushatayidParticipantWhat is the point of this thread? Is it….
….. If you do not use the Eruv, you are an Am Haaretz and misguided following a psak issued by a renowned posek who was fooled by people with an agenda?
…… If you do use the Eruv you are a mechallel shabbos following a psak issued by a renowned posek who was fooled by people with an agenda?
It is basicly what is being assreted again and again, just dressed differently every time.

In fact he added, it is a davar pashut and is clearly stated in seforim hakedoshim.
apushatayidParticipantPeople should be so passionate about their ahavas yisroel as they are their opinion regarding eruvin in brooklyn.

Common sense demands a healthy dose of skeptism regarding everything claimed by an anonymous poster in the name of an anonymous Rav.
apushatayidParticipantThe bottom line is, many rabbonim said ok to use many said not ok. Even if it just one Rav. If it is your Rav, follow him, whether the answer is yes or no. Don’t worry about everyone else and their Rav.
apushatayidParticipantLet me add. Sociologists.
apushatayidParticipantLet me add. Sociologists.
apushatayidParticipantInteresting discussion/debate/argument (not sure the appropriate word) here. Not a single protaganist in the machlokes even sees it important to get involved. They issued a psak and are comfortable with it, despite the coffee room geonim, tzadikim and poskim who disagree with it.

Anyone can make the claim that they have it from the most respected Rabbonim that they approve or disapprove of anything. Without stating who, it is meaningless. You are anonymous and you are making a claim in the name of an unnamed Rav. I’m sure your an ehrlicher yid, but you see how unreliable such a claim is.

March 31, 2011 12:54 pm at 12:54 pm in reply to: Chasunah Policies – What are the details? Do they make sense? #754605apushatayidParticipantThere are many types of investments and insurance policies available. life insurance policies that generate cash value are but one type. Speak to a broker/financial advisor for what is most suitable for you.
apushatayidParticipantWolf. I am not endorsing the areivim plan, nor am I calling it life insurance. Whatever the areivim plan might be, one thing is certain, it is looking for a means to provide for an almannah and yesomim r’l, as opposed to sitting back and relying on emunah. Some of the signers (at least) follow the hashkafa and psak halacha of the chazon ish and nevertheless endorse the program.
apushatayidParticipantAt least some of the signatories follow the shitta of the Chazon Ish Z’L.
apushatayidParticipantIsn’t there a Tshuva in Igros Moshe that addresses the hashkafic question of bitachon and insurance?
apushatayidParticipantDo you feel there is a halachic or hashkafic reason not to purchase a life insurance policy that you are asking this question?

March 29, 2011 10:23 am at 10:23 am in reply to: Let's Define Terms – What is "yeshivish", "MO", etc? #753797apushatayidParticipant28 years ago, around the table one day by lunch several guys in the yeshiva were discussing the terms applied to groups of yidden. Back then, if you wore brown pants and a blue shirt (at the same time) you were “greasy”, if you wore a belt (gevald!) You wore a bit to the left. If you were color coordinated, gevald, you were already halfway towards kefira. Times sure have changed. Super greasy (the term yeshivish wasn’t in the vocabulary) guys didn’t take off their hat and jackets in the bathroom or, while playing basketball.
That was the psak of those bachurim in yeshiva of staten island, all those years ago. 🙂

Also to MW13. Forget the cross. I’m talking about the icons of mary. catholics pray to mary. that is an avoda zara, even for a non jew. there is no issue of shituf to discuss on this one. it is one of a number of “problems” protestants have with catholicism.
So, when will the bachurim go and be mikayim this mitzvah to uproot avoda zara?
March 27, 2011 4:05 pm at 4:05 pm in reply to: Bochrim Spray-Paint Over Not Tzniyus Advertisement #759956apushatayidParticipantShticky. MW. This is not the proper forum for catholic dogma. The idols of mary are most definitely avoda zara. ever hear the term “hail mary”?
As for the bachurim. I find it interesting mw and joseph are suddenly asking “who disaprroved” when they are usually the ones arguing in favor of every chumra arguing who mattired.
March 25, 2011 10:37 pm at 10:37 pm in reply to: Bochrim Spray-Paint Over Not Tzniyus Advertisement #759926apushatayidParticipantPeople are manufacturing new lavin and piling on aveiros.
To those who keep citing the great and holy mitzva performed by these bachurim, when are they going to smash the idols in front of the catholic church on 17th and 46th? Doesn’t the torah tell us to destry all avoda zara?
March 25, 2011 6:38 pm at 6:38 pm in reply to: Bochrim Spray-Paint Over Not Tzniyus Advertisement #759910apushatayidParticipantI didnt see the sign. Of the merchandise available at H & M, less than 10% is suitable to the heimishe market in BP. Last I checked H & M didnt sell seemed stockings or all black dresses that covered the elbows and knees. It is not my place to defend the marketing practices of H & M or VistaMedia the owner of that, and a good percentage of billboards in and around Boro Park. The only point I am making, again and again, is that there appears to be an assumption that H & M is 1)targeting the heimishe community 2) is either stupid or brazen in the imagery it uses to reach that market and that the vandals are being lauded for their vandalism by one or 2. I should not have commented on 1 or 2 because it has sidetracked the entire discussion. Regarding number 3. My sons Rebbe davens by Rav Wolfson. I asked the Rebbe today, to ask Rav Wolfson over shabbos 1)for the appropriate course of action in this situation and 2) if the course of action chosen by these bachurim was appropriate. I will hopefully have an answer sometime on sunday.

Not if the target audience is the Public School foot traffic in the area.
Not sure what, if any, advertising or marketing experience or training you might have, but simply putting a name, and product sold, does not cut it in the world of advertising. Just look at the ads you see flashing on the sides or top of the YWN page. Read the ads in mishpacha, ami or hamodia magazine (or ANY heimishe publication for that matter that carriers advertisements). Imagery goes a long way. The imagery created by this particular ad, may not be appropriate for the heimishe community in BP but is quite appropriate for the public school audience HM and/or Vista Media might be trying to reach. You can google both companies. You can get the contact info for the publicist of each company and let them know how you feel. Spray painting the advertisement will likely make them dig in their heels and put up a new ad thus defeating the purpose of the real message the community wants to convey.
If HM really believed the billboard served a purpose in the area, they would simply place it in a higher location. Will it become a game of cat and mouse? Haha, I can climb higher than any billboard you will place? If HM decides it isnt worth their while, then what, start the whole thing again with Gap? Banana Republic? Another product that has imagery that is offensive? At best, the bachurim have a short term solution to a long term problem. And no, the means do not justify the ends, ever.
No, this is not avoda zara in E”Y where the torah commands bnei yisroel to remove them. This is secular united states, yes, even 16th Ave and 43rd is part of secular america. What do the Rabbonim in the immediate area have to say? The RY of Shaarei Yosher? Rav Wolfson?

March 25, 2011 3:09 am at 3:09 am in reply to: Bochrim Spray-Paint Over Not Tzniyus Advertisement #759875apushatayidParticipantAnywhere in the article about these bachurim, is there a quote from their rebbe or rav giving them a yasher koach? An acknowledgement that they asked for guidance from a rebbe or rav? Has anyone seen or heard a single rebbe or rav who has stated their actions were appropriate?
March 24, 2011 3:53 pm at 3:53 pm in reply to: Bochrim Spray-Paint Over Not Tzniyus Advertisement #759843apushatayidParticipantH and M, like many stores of all kinds, use data provided by their own customers. Whether it is signing up for a mailing, a credit card or buying online, they may see a cluster of customers in this area. They may have been targeting the public scholl traffic as well (someone stated there is one in the vicinity). Perhaps they signed a contract that gets them 50 bus shelters evenly scattered through the boro. Whatever it is, why assume they are out to offend everyone?
apushatayidParticipantI have a family member who won’t use my dishes because I eat gebrokts and he doesn’t, he claims he received such a psak. On the flip side, many who don’t eat gebrokts have eaten on my dishes and have told me their rav says its no problem. Just follow your rav.
apushatayidParticipantI think the subject of thread is wrong. If your Rav told you that you can Kasher it easily, that is not a hetter. That is a psak that you can kasher your dishwasher and make it 100% kosher as far as he is concerned. If other Rabbonim pasken that it can not be kashered, then that is not a chumra, but a psak that the dishwasher can not be kashered at all and it remains treif (unless they hold that me-ikkar hadin it can be kashered but they want to be machmir like a specific shita for whatever reason in which case, the first Rav is not maikel, the second is machmir). In which case your quesiton becomes, if I have an item that is kosher meikkar hadin, but someone is noheig a chumra, am I obligated to let him know that he would be violating his chumra, or conversely, must he always investigate that all situations conform to his chumra. To me, the word hetter always comes with the implication that the Rav found a loophole, which is often not the case and where possible, I try to avoid its usage because it is disparaging.

I said maybe. The point I was making is that it was irrelevant to this discussion.
apushatayidParticipantFedup: Congrats. Amazing. Mazal Tov. Keep it up. Labriut.
apushatayidParticipantMr Kent. Maybe there was, maybe there wasn’t. The thread at hand isn’t really focused on a hat for tefilla but rather wearing a hat at all times.
