Just checking to see if this shirt thread came outfitted with cement shoes. It’s sinking faster in the Coffee Room listings than a cinder block tied to a cinder block. Still trying to avoid adding dry cleaners to my list of things to do.

    Hi haifagirl.

    You’re velcro. lol. (You’re welcome).

    Alrighty then!

After reading this thread I am totally confused about if its ok or not to: play music for others (as YWN), listen to music, listen to live music, listen to recorded music, listen to computerized “music/muzak”, or a capella (also depending on how it is created), during the Three Weeks.

But, to be safe, I will Bl”N (only in case I forget and pop in a CD or hit a preset on the car radio and suddenly remember to shut it off), try not to listen to music, but I know I will hear it.

Oh, if you hear music but make an effort to not “get into it”, is that ok?

Maybe we need a hechsher on music…

    Hi real israeli,

I wanted to add that usually it starts when the students first have access to a cell phone either via their parents or their own. Usually they are excited and ask, “Oh, can I text you? I just got a phone….etc”

Depending on the chemistry/personality of the rebbe/teacher, in a way it’s good they want to try out their new phones texting responsible adults in the community.

It’s a good question, and you make a great point. I guess it’s a case by case basis. It’s similar to the various adult personalities I have studied with over the years. Some me I have studied with are more formal and keep it to study only, and others are formal during study, too, but may forward Jewish jokes or texts that are being forwarded with light-hearted information.

I guess if the students are excited about texting a teacher/rebbe, when they first get a phone, and it does not break down the boundary line of instructor and learner in the class, I guess it can be an extension, too, of a valuable teacher/rebbe rapport.

If that line breaks down, then the rebbe/teacher has to tighten things up and go back to basics and reestablish a more formal role with the student.

An old yoga trick I learned somewhere along the road. lol

Slowly breath in through your nostrils only, to the count of six.

Hold the breath to the count of six.

Let it out slowly through your mouth only, to the count of 7.

Repeat about four times, and you will much more relaxed, Iy”H

The accompanying thought is if your body is relaxed, your mind will be relaxed.

    Hatzlacha!

Worst? Chinese/Japanese/Korean/VietNamese, etc. It sounds like someone is trying to negotiate a very hot lemon in their mouth. But you can add Swedish to that, too. That sounds like someone is playing a tape backwards.

Best? Hebrew! I love hearing it and looking at the letters. Even the word, “Hebrew”, is a very attractive word; if there can be such a thing. lol

    Hi real israeli,

I have text communication with some current and former students. The communication is a reflection no different than the classroom cordiality. Texts range from, “Good Shabbos”, to asking if I know of any summer jobs, keeping me up to date on what cities they are learning in at present, sending regards from someone, notifying me of a simcha, some are now in college and ask for some thoughts on assignments they are working on, even some good-natured sports rivalry conversation or updates on political issues; no different than a schmooze we may have after class. There is the same politeness and good tidings.

in reply to: I am desperate to enjoy davening, #1022889

I find that in a slower minyan, I enjoy davening more. I take a deep breath and focus on the words I am about to daven, and try to understand and articulate each word with clarity and meaning.

A slower minyan helps me increase my concentration and benefit by being around talmidim who daven even slower and with tremendous kavana.

The more you get inside the prayers, to me, the more enjoyment, and fulfillment there is.

I put concerted effort into “getting into it”. And even if I try to think of excuses to go to a later minyan as I am going to a shul, a few minute of concerted effort leads into a very fulfilling davening, BH.

Also, reading Pathway to Prayer has been a big influence on my approach, in addition to, lahavdil, rock n roll. lol. I say to myself if I could be passionate about music and lyrics and concerts when I was younger, really getting into the instrumentation and lyrics of select groups, how much more so should I put that kind of focus into, davening to our Creator. I hate to say it, but thinking about that helps me daven deeper.

You would seriously have to ask a lawyer.

From a laypersons understanding, and I am not saying I am right on all counts, but I the criteria would include: 1. The mother is a convicted felon on drug charges, in particular. 2. The mother is mentally unstable. 3. The mother consents to the father having primary custody.

Otherwise, the default is the mother gets primary custody, but cannot deny the father time, or that is punishable by law. Even if the father owes support…

Sadly, TOO many people I have known go through this spin cycle. Its tragic.

In cases where the mother is very difficult in allowing the father time with the child(ren), usually after some time the moms ending calling up the fathers to take the kids as much as they can get away with.

Rabbi Noach Weinberg Zatzal, olav hashalom, said something to the effect, “Three out of five couples who say, I do, end up saying, I dont. And who knows what is going on in the other two marriages?”

I am not sure why you ask your question, but I hope no one has to deal with this, and if they do, I hope it works out for the better, rather than the worse.

There are many people here who are very learned. Some are more influential to me than others for a variety or reasons.

But to drop names at the expense of others, who I may not understand yet, or whose names I forgot to mention, creating some sort of disappointment or something like that in them, is a more important concern to me than hurling names I like up against the wall.

I have to say these kinds of lists are beneath us and smack of shallowness and cronyism. I am sorry….

I agree with Rabbi Elyashivs ruling and would like to add:

And if the passenger left a bag of money in the car, to what extent should the car owner have any connection after a weekend? I say zero. So anything monies needing to be spent having anything to do with the chicken, is totally in the domain of the passenger.

Hopefully, the passenger agreed to pay for the cleaning, anyway.

    Hi Ibmzr.

Whether Hashem wants YOU to spend most of your day making money, I dont know.

But I do want to add a more positive spin to your outlook on “making money”. Earning money is very important. Money can accomplish many vital, important, and holy things.

I cannot tell you the complete list of gadolim throughout history who worked in business at a trade and in a profession. One would assume they did not do so giving their occupation short shrift.

Secondly, none of us know how “lasting” a specific job is. Certainly, if someone is going to pay your for something, it has importance to them, and to the bigger picture. It is not only the quarterback who wins the game.

What IS lasting, is how one performs at their job. Any person can make any job a kiddush Hashem, or chas veshalom not.

I once read in a foreward to a book, that a “Ben Torah tries to handle EVERYTHING that comes his way better than the average person”. That, I recommend, is the hashkafa we should all bring to the workforce. Our actions are certainly lasting.

From my experience dealing with young people in schools, some people are different in different situations. They may clown around with friends but be staid with “authority” or any combination of things. They may seem sad or troubled because of a home situation, but that part of them does not come out with other people in other settings. People are complex.

I see no upside to informing anyone that so and so, “Is extremely insecure”. You can ruin it for him.

My 2 cents is to let the date decide if she sees that trait during dating, and if she does, does she even sees it as a negative?

Try PCS/Aguda, for finding a new job while you are working. Its not worth the aggravation to try to deal with a crank case of a boss.

If you are in a corporation, go to human resources. If it is his business, well, then he is failing the test by creating difficulty for someone helping him in his endeavor, and you should look elsewhere.

Once you find a new job, you will be happier.

Hatzlacha in finding a job you enjoy, feel valued, and compensated very well.

I heard that yes, you are allowed to buy the coffee. But no, you are not really allowed to do into those places.

It does not look right, and more importantly, you are putting yourself at risk since McDonalds is known for its junk food with a strong smell that makes you want to buy their stuff.

It’s kinda akin to going to a church for some matza because they are the kind that like to have a little seder around Pesach time.

My thought is that our precious neshamas are worth not putting at risk for the extra 37 or so cents for coffee.

Because decaf feels like the red-headed stepsister of the coffee world and is becoming militant about it.

Think for a second: ok, that was quick. lol In the world of coffee these days, with all the imports and flavors and ways coffee can be served up…..decaf kinda feels like chop liver.

I do have sympathy for decaf for taking a fighting stance and not going the route of Sanka.

    Hi oot.

It is definitely a test. But not nearly the tests Avraham Avinu went through, if that contrast helps.

It is possible to find a new job, and maybe look while are you still working.

It is also possible to find some meaning or challenge in the negative things about your job.

All in all, if someone dislikes their job a great deal, they will not be happy in it and that can, chas veshalom, affect their entire being.

Look for a new job and daven for help in finding one.

Hatzlacha and may you find the right job you are designated for and feel happy, productive in it, and compensated handsomely.

While there is no “real” test to evaluate and rate the “totality” of the mind’s capabilities. IQ tests seem to be a valid and reliable indicator of the mind’s ability to comprehend and synthesis and apply information/skill to tasks within a “general” knowledge base.

IQ tests ARE culturally and socio-economically biased because a certain set of knowledge is assumed to have been acquired in order to be able to take the test. If that foundation is not there, it is difficult to assess how proficient the mind is capable of functioning.

Also, being that tests are stressful, people are being timed, the state of mind of the test taker, usually means people score lower than what they really possess in terms of IQ.

As you know, there is a good argument that self-esteem, perseverance, etc., are greater indicators in terms of predicting success and the ability of the mind to function on an optimum level.

    Hi OlamHaba.

My two cents would be to the child there are many ways to serve Hashem and to do what Hashem wants us to do, and even though you are working on the kind of music you listen to, and doing a great job, your brother has not gotten to that yet. But there may also be things your brother is working on that you have not gotten to yet, either.

In this way the child can get the idea of individual growth and development and be rewarded for his success, but not at the expense of him thinking his brother is bad…or something along those lines.
