Obviously, this idea assumes the latter. Now you may ask, “Are there time zones in Olam Habo?”.

I don’t know the answer, but perhaps it follows the time zone of where the person is buried, or where he died, or where his descendants live. Or perhaps, the length of time out of Gehennom depends on how long Shabbos is kept in one area regardless if it’s at the same time.

A reason given for the minhag that an avel does not lead the tefillos on Shabbos is that it gives the appearance that he considers his parent a mechallel Shabbos, and therefore in need of the zechus to save the parent from Gehennom even on Shabbos.

We don’t find that if the son is in a different time zone, that minhag changes, nor do we find that he doesn’t lead Erev Shabbos Minchah or Sunday Shacharis because somewhere in the world it’s Shabbos. The son’s Shabbos is apparently representative of the parent’s, even if not actually aligned, so that concept may very well apply to the inyan of tosefes Shabbos as well.

AS far as the Ger in training he acquires the food before Yom Tov or Shabbos so that you are not cooking more food because of him.

How does that help for Yom Tov, and why is it necessary for Shabbos?

What if there is a mixed couple and the wife is jewish and the Kids are jewish. You want to try to mekarev them, but the only way you will get them to come is also invite the non-jewish husband.

Think about which religion you want to be mekarev them to, and whether your actions are consistent with that religion.

    I thought I answered that.

Your question is no different than the previous way you asked it. It is, of course, d’rabbanan, but we keep d’rabbanans. As far as the fact that some may abuse it,

Simcha613, I don’t think the line between chumra and hiddur is quite as clearly defined as that.

For example, the Mishnah B’rurah says that keeping chumros in esrog (not necessarily in beauty, but in kashrus) is a kiyum of hidur mitzvah.

LC, are you assuming that neshamos rest from Gehennom from the time Shabbos begins in the earliest time zone until when Shabbos ends in the latest time zone?

See also Shaarei Teshuvah there, who holds of getting drunk kip’shuto, but brings a raya that when difficult, he is patur.

Also you have to know what exactly happened there — she did not want him to drink at all or just not go with machmiring shittos.

Since the story isn’t real, let’s go with a reasonable story.

A man is used to getting quite drunk on Purim, as per many shittos, and the minhag of many segments of klal Yisroel. However, his wife (like many) doesn’t want this, and in fact, is extremely upset about it.

So they go to their rav who says he should follow the Rema’s shittah, as recommended by Mishnah B’rurah, to drink more than usual and go to sleep.

The reactions here on either side are misguided.

Some feel that based on the wife’s wishes, halachah should be disregarded, and/or that it’s childish to ask a rav. Chas V’shalom! We don’t throw away the Torah based on how it makes us feel.

Others seem to think the rav is not following halachah. This is also not true. He is, after all, paskening like the Mishnah B’rurah! If the wife was amenable, maybe for this man, getting very drunk is the proper way to do the mitzvah. However, under the circumstances, he can certainly rely on the Rema’s shittah, which is, after all, what the Mishnah B’rurah holds l’chatchilah.

CTLAWYER, that’s because we both are registered Democrats, and in a general election, since Trump will be the nominee, I will not vote Republican.

The difference between us is that if Cruz or Kasich (or almost anyone else) were nominated, I would vote for them against Hilary in a heartbeat.

It’s very sad how people who are machmir on so few things throughout the year are all of a sudden machmir when it comes to getting drunk, at the expense of shalom bayis.

Do you get the most expensive esrog? Do you use a sukka kosher according to the Chazon Ish? Do you eat matza that you baked in a chaburah according to shitas hoRosh?

Before today’s world, when we were told to multi-task. I was kidding.

I don’t listen to audio books, but personally, looking inside a sefer is much more effective than listening to a shiur, live or taped.

It should start on Purim, as the basis is probably shloshim Yom kodem hachag… http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=916&st=&pgnum=273

It should also only apply to matza you can be yotzei with, as ubiquitin and flatbusher said.

It is because in today’s world, we are taught to multi-task which means that it is harder to focus on one thing. Reading inside takes more active participation which increases focus and makes you more immersed. Listening is a passive act in which you can be doing other things or spacing out while doing it so you aren’t as focused and immersed.

In the olden days, however, audiobooks were preferred.

I don’t think the two of you are really disagreeing. I think you both realize that you should care about others’ perceptions so that there should not be chillul Hashem, and so that people will not learn incorrect behavior, and that one shouldn’t care for personal haughtiness.
