☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant
Ubiquitin is right that many Chassidic courts have always acted as royal courts. It’s personally not my cup of tea, but this is their mehalech in avodas Hashem. Rabbeinu Hakadosh wasn’t neheneh personally from his wealth, but his wealth was very much on public display.
TLIK is writing revisionist history about Chassidim. Yes, there were Rebbes who lived austere lives, but there were the other type as well.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI’ve yet to see a legitimate tayna.
You people are just jealous.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantTo me, this issue becomes a Brisker question. Is zdakah a din in the gavra or in the chefttza? If the mitzva is on the gavra then fine, I give my donation! If the mossad or the meshulach are crooked or are con men, that’s on their heads.
So if it’s a din in the gavra, can I go to a fancy restaurant and be mekayem the mitzvah of tzedaka?
May 28, 2018 10:48 pm at 10:48 pm in reply to: Enforcement of gittin in civil court custody cases in New York #1527802☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYou can get thrown in jail for contempt of court for not following the judge’s orders, which could include filing a civil divorce and giving a get where the judge determines that the marriage is effectively over.
May 28, 2018 9:45 pm at 9:45 pm in reply to: Enforcement of gittin in civil court custody cases in New York #1527788☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYou made a of that up.
The get law forced a divorcing spouse to remove any “barrier to remarriage” which includes a get.May 28, 2018 9:02 pm at 9:02 pm in reply to: Enforcement of gittin in civil court custody cases in New York #1527773☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe first Get Law says if the husband doesn’t give a Get but files for a civil divorce, the civil divorce is denied
Then there will be cases where a get is mandated by the court.
May 28, 2018 6:57 pm at 6:57 pm in reply to: Enforcement of gittin in civil court custody cases in New York #1527740☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe first law Rav Moshe approved of and is pretty benign. It just denies a legal divorce if there’s no Get.
That’s a pretty big deal, as the courts can sometimes mandate one party agree to a civil divorce.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIf advertising it as a mitzvah would raise more money than advertising it as a segulah, you could bet they would advertise it as a mitzvah.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWould it have been so hard to include it right after shemona esrei and aleinu just like almost all other “simple” siddurim?
What’s strange is that they do that in the Sefard siddur.
May 25, 2018 4:25 pm at 4:25 pm in reply to: Why does Schmaltz Herring cost $22 a pound? (excluding the onions & oil) #1526283☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThey sell Rolls buy 2 get 1 free , any roll you want at most stores
No they don’t
Fresh Salmon costs less than $6 a pound
No it doesn’t
You’ve got to find out where ZD shops.

Sure, but how much can seaweed cost already?

May 25, 2018 8:18 am at 8:18 am in reply to: Why do people think they could “trust themselves” with smartphones? #1526101☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSome BT’s do have a problem getting a Taavah for something they can no longer eat
Ask an FFB about Lobster and ask a BT about it. An FFB would likely be repulsed by it, but a BT might have a problem if he smelled one
I’m sure you would agree that despite someone having a taavah for it, it would still be assur.
I’m not sure why that part of the analogy to a smartphone doesn’t work for you. Whatever the rabbonim feel about smartphones (assur, unwise, only filtered, etc.) shouldn’t be affected by the fact that people have them, the same way lobster isn’t muttar for a BT.

(excluding the onions & oil) #1526064☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantDY: Unfortunately, I don’t have time to run to every store, purchase the $7.50 or $10 minimum to get the sales price. If one does have hat time, kol hakavod.
Just curious; then why did you ask?

I’m looking forward to seeing that in stores soon, under the name “Haimy’s Heimishe Herring”.
May 24, 2018 10:28 am at 10:28 am in reply to: Why do people think they could “trust themselves” with smartphones? #1525536☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWe don’t trust ourselves with arayos, that’s why there are hilchos yichud as well as other harchakos.
If you think you’ll walk into Wendy’s because your yetzer hora will be so strong, don’t go anywhere near it. However, specifically in the area of arayos, the yetzer hora is so strong that the Torah and Chazal instituted extra harchkos.
May 24, 2018 12:08 am at 12:08 am in reply to: Why do people think they could “trust themselves” with smartphones? #1525393☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe difference is a FFB frum jew never ate Treif (Or at least was not supposed to)
But what if he did? And what about non FFB?
May 23, 2018 9:57 pm at 9:57 pm in reply to: Why do people think they could “trust themselves” with smartphones? #1525373☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhy stop at smartphones?
How can you trust yourself to not be mechallel shabbos, eat traif, hilchos nidda,
Hilchos yichudYou’ve partially answered your own question. We do find that you’re not allowed to trust yourself for some things, hence hilchos yichud.
Is it a wonder that some put an unfiltered device in the same category?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI don’t imagine they’re the same schools.

Samsung’s flagship line of smartphones is the Galaxy S. S stands for sushi.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThey’re saying it’s been sitting on the shelf since October 1st. It’s now May 23rd.
You didn’t answer my first question.
Also, who’s “they”?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhich liverwurst? Why not?
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant1. We don’t pasken that way.
May 22, 2018 9:27 am at 9:27 am in reply to: Would you let your children listen to non-jewish music? #1523117☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHe replied that it is because he never once heard a non-jewish song in his life
That’s demonstrably untrue. In fact, there are at least two songs he recorded which were non-Jewish: Kumbaya, and the second part of Ki Va Moed.
It’s amazing that this myth keeps being repeated.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantPresumably you cant burn Issureoi haanaah for fuel/heat.
Right. Which nobody is doing here. The hana’ah they’re getting is the mitzvah, which is muttar because mitzvos lav leihanus nitnu. Any ensuing celebration is a celebration of the mitzvah and not hana’ah from the item.
If someone toiveled (during the winter) in a mikva which was ne’esar b’hana’ah to him, which is muttar because mitzvos lav leihanus nitnu and there’s no physical pleasure, he can definitely make a party to celebrate that he was m’kayem the mitzvah of tevilah.
Not sure what relevance pyromania has to your question.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSo for a pyromaniac who gets Hannaah from burning is that a problem? Or is it davka physical hanaah
There’s no heter of mitzvos lav leihonos nitnu on pyromania.
So it’s not relevant to this case.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantBut if said destruction is “fun” isnt that hannah
It’s not hana’ah from the item of issur.
though as I recall using a mikva that one made a neder on is assur in summer
That’s physical hana’ah from the actual item of issur.
But isnt hosting a dance with music inviting friends dancing to celebrate said destruction and having a grand old time, having haanah from the item?
No.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt supposedly was a recording of the word laurel on the vocabulary dot com website.

I didn’t say otherwise; I said (implied) that they’re not the same.
T2, you can continue to quote how bad chillul Hashem is, but that simply wasn’t.
May 15, 2018 5:23 pm at 5:23 pm in reply to: Chashuve Rabbonim participating in Public Events with Goiyeshe Prayers #1521167☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIts a חלול שם שמים בפני כל עם. There is no teshuva for this.
Repeating it doesn’t change the fact that it isn’t. You are obviously not familiar with what the definition of chillul Hashem is.
What do you think it means?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHow about a Shavigger?
May 15, 2018 7:00 am at 7:00 am in reply to: Chashuve Rabbonim participating in Public Events with Goiyeshe Prayers #1520709☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIts not a concept, its a fact

Hatov is on sale now for $2.29 in NPGS, and others are $2.49 or $2.59. You can even get J&J on sale now for $2.99 in KRM.

I’ve been paying about $2.

The scientific name for the Atlantic herring is actually Clupea harengus.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI don’t see it.

☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHow do doctors give less time to Medicaid patients than to their other patients?
By checking them more quickly (therefore less thoroughly) and spending less time answering questions.
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participantwaiving a copay is not insurance fraud
It can be considered an illegal kickback, or a violation of the contract with the insurance company (and therefore fraud).
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWho says they’re allowed to?
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participantif a yid bounces a very large check to you, as bad as he may be even if he did it intentionally and refuses to pay up, there’s not even a hava amina in the S”A or poskim that you might have a heter to press criminal charges against him
If he’s likely to do it again, and this is the only way to prevent it, it might be a chiyuv. As Per Shulchan Aruch.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI think jail is dehumanizing and should only be used for violent offenders.
How would you punish Bernie Madoff?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe Rosh is right. I don’t even think the Rif argues.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHe was his own first cousin through marriage.

What about where the rabbonim recommend a get but can’t literally force him?
Are you similarly unsympathetic in those types of cases?
