Good to start early- you can ask teachers before they get ambushed by tons of parents and girls. Also have your daughter think about who they would ask recommendation letters from… It can make a big difference. I would advise talking to someone that knows your daughter personally, one that your daughter has a kesher with or likes her (just because female teachers would probably know more and feel more comfortably about giving seminary advice.).

Some good questions to pose (I went through these with someone I know and it helped narrow down choices for her).

(In no order of importance, just as they popped into my head)

    1. Small or Large? Each has their own benefits. Is your daughter a social butterfly who would be more comfortable with a large crowd that can be varied in types (up to a point)? In these the staff might not know each girl so personally and each girl will not know the entire seminary that well (unless your daughter is the type to know the whole school’s name the first day of high school…) Or would she like a smaller, family-like setting where the staff knows the girls, each girl knows the rest of the seminary and it is more likely that the girls are more of a similar mindset hashkafically and academically, if your daughter has specific topics she is interested in or questions or subjects, or specific needs (food allergies) a smaller sem might be more suited and can adjust year to year easier than larger ones… Seminaries can be 30 girls (shoshanim, tiferes) to 150 (BJJ, Hadar)…

    2. I hate the terms academic or non-academic. I dont like the questions that are “put yourself in a box and dont leave it for anything” type. Most seminaries teach, some just do more of it and stress it. Really book-ish? Are there not enough class hours in the day? (most girls by the end of sem love their teachers). If she is somewhere in between, I would recommend leaving this question unanswered until the end…

    3. How yeshivish? (another boxy term I hate. Everyone is a little different and what one person considers one thing, another may consider it the opposite. for lack of better terms, here it is…) Is your family set on kollel-life? Is it possible or definite that she will go to some sort of college (community, touro, regular/secular college)? Some seminaries will try to convince your daughter that she “must do this” and if it is against your daughter’s ideals it can pose a problem if she doesnt want to end up that way.

    4. Does your daughter think “out of the box” ever? Does she either question what teachers say, does she think for herself…? Some seminaries or types encourage it and others dont. There are BY or non YU seminaries that allow people to ask questions, albeit sometimes after class so not to take up time in class. Some seminaries discourage any type of self-expression of ideas, thoughts ect.

    5. How old of a sem do you want? there are those that are in their second year, some that have been around for a while… It can make a difference: experience can be a good thing!

Ideas: Besides asking a teacher, have your daughter ask a girl whom she thinks is quite similar and find out where she went to seminary and what she thinks.

Vouchers are a long term goal, you are right SJSinNYC, but we need to start soon… if we pressure long enough and hard enough (especially if there are elections coming up soon) it can happen. But schools need to fix their yearly deficit. Why should they be allowed to run negative every year? Something has got to change about the way schools are run.

Any school administrators here? Maybe you can lend us some insight…

I dont remember when this was, but it did happen. When was this amendment to the NY state constitution passed?

Maybe it can’t be passed in NY, but I have not heard of other states with such an amendment in their state constitution. You said NJ doesn’t and neither does CA for that matter. I dont know about Illinois, TX, Maryland, Florida or any other state with a large Jewish population. Just because no one has vouchers doesnt mean that they can’t have them. We need to push our representatives. Who says we can’t help our brethren in other states try to pass vouchers? If one community has a little extra money now that they have state funds, maybe they will be more willing to help other areas. Or at least more frum people will move their and that community will grow.

    Help other Yidden!

in reply to: Stories from Chelm #891355

I heard that the people in chelm were either the smartest people or the dumbest… There was that story where the malach was distributing his batch of neshamos all over the world. In one bag was his smart ones and in the other was his dumber ones. Somehow the left bag ripped (I dont know the whole story) and those in the bag all fell out. It depended on from which direction you were looking at him from…so were they the smartest ones or the dumbest people around? Their logic makes a lot of sense… but maybe we just dont get it cuz we are the dumb ones…

If it is chelm, Poland… it makes a lot of sense about how foolish they can be.

artchill- please translate… I dont do yiddish well…

I understand seperating church and state, and that is why the money was to ANY school, it can be the “athiests elementary” for all the program cares. It was supposed to help get the smarter kids out of public school and into private better educated schools. Did you know that the NY gov once gave a lot of money to Catholic schools for taking attendance (required by law to makes sure the students were coming to school). That way the schools got money and the govt wasnt violating church and state… maybe what we need is a nice gov who wants a lot of the brooklyn vote… (even though it is quite small comparatively to the entire state. It is just one that can swing easily)

anon- so in NY they are illegal. What about NJ residents? I am sure there are plenty of frum people who would love vouchers! All those families in Edison, Elizabeth,Lakewood…. should be happy!

what was the reasoning that they became illegal? I am pre-empting the expected comment: “because they hate yidden” because this hurts all those Xian schools as well. I meant a reason that they could say publicly- is it shame that their public schools are doing so terribly?

It hasnt gone far but we can still try. Why wait for a lobyist group to do it- call, write and email them yourselves! It is worth a shot!

BPtotty- audits have been suggested, but what school would allow that to happen to their institution? All sorts of stuff might come out that they dont want to happen. It wouldnt be as much as 5 mil because you forgot about rent, books (50-100 each, depending on subject for secular… dont know what type of deal they get on lemudai kodesh), furniture ect…

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658163

I guess we should all vote for something called school vouchers- This is where the government gives each family a coupon for the amount it would cost for them to teach your child that year in public school. You can give this to ANY accredited school that you want: public, private, religious (any), prep, magnet…

The government would pay that amount to the school and you would have to make up the difference. Of course tuition would only increase (the parents would still be out the same amount of money) but then those who couldnt pay still are as if they “paid” part of it! The schools end up with a little more money (and the average student is better educated in the public school-parents have the choice now!)

The government wont push this now but if we pressure our governors and senators (some of this would be federal aid), eventually the message will be heard. google your representative’s name and email them!

    nononsense- B”H!

anon- It was a misunderstanding on my part as well… I thought you were disagreeing with the genetic part. Forgive me?

in reply to: Therapy – To Tell or Not to Tell? #657412

anon- it is not standard but doctors are aware of the genetic component. That is why when you go to a new doctor, they give you a form to fill out which asks you for your vital information (illnesses you may have C”V) and your immediate family’s info. This is true even when your medical records were sent over- they have a simple reference sheet. One of the diseases they specifically ask for is diabetes. But it isnt purely genetic so it shouldnt have much to do with shidduchim. Many people have it and the rest of their family has no sign of it so shidduchim shouldnt rest on something small like that.

in reply to: YESHIVAS: Alef & Beis Or Same Level? #656858

estherh-yes teachers shouldnt judge a student but how would you feel if your kid was stuck in a class without anything to do? Twiddling their thumbs because they understood fractions a week ago while the teacher is still trying to explain the fact that 1/4 is smaller than 1/3. why should she bother coming to school if she wont learn anything? bumping students up a grade isnt always the best thing, and neither is letting them stay back a year. Why should she be given extra work or busy work to keep her busy in class? why should she try if she will only get extra homework?

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658147

artchill- you forgot about a few things. In a school there are other expenses besides teachers. What about gas, water, mortgage/rent, electricity costs? Costs: chalk, board markers, desks and chairs, books (even second hand it adds up. If the students are required to buy their own, then there are still the teacher’s edition and copy to think about), light bulbs, pens for the office, paper… the list goes on and on- and these are the bare bones! what about if there is a plumbing or sewage problem? You wouldnt want your child to be in a school without a working sink or bathroom. what if there were other basic issues with the building? a leaky roof? electrical issues? They need a better accountant if tuition isnt covering the costs but how much is this “bare bones tuition”? It must include all of the above…

Azoi.is…What I meant is that the hanhala should not rely on others but should make up the difference somehow. Take less of a paycheck home for themselves. By expecting Gvirim to pay it still is on the public dole because once they cant pay, everyone else is told to pay up.

GAW- ok (i guess?)… 😉 glad to see we are on the same page (or post?)

in reply to: YESHIVAS: Alef & Beis Or Same Level? #656853

what about girls? what about the smarter kids?

It is quite easy for students to tell which kids get which tests. I had a teacher who was quite quiet about it and they will have two stacks of tests but kids waiting for the tests to be handed out are antsy and notice things. Also, teachers may announce “those with test B/modified should note that….” and certain kids start scrambling to take it all down.

in reply to: Is $75/hr For Tutoring Excessive? #656799

Heshy- I think it is excessive. i guess it depends on for what subject and if the kid is disabled or whatnot. If it was advanced gemarra where the rebbi would have to spend hours preparing I see maybe 50. If it was an AP course or Regents, it still is high. Well, what is the rate for babysitting in your area? if it is 20 an hour, then I might see it. But it still is quite high.

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658140

Azoi.is- then the hanhala should find a way to pay for these kids’ education and not force it on the rest of the klal. Person A stayed in kollel and now cannot support his family’s needs. Person B left kollel/yeshiva to get a job/education for a job and now works. He can meet his family’s needs but no extras. Should person B put themselves into debt to support A? At times one must leave kollel or work an extra shift to be able to pay for their own kids’ needs. Person B shouldnt have to take a second job to pay for person A.

GAW- What I meant by “anyways” is that each person should do their best for their own family. that is what we really disagree on… If I cant afford (and no- my family didnt go to the mountains this summer, do not own a vacation home and didnt go on any real vacation this summer. no one is the age to go to sleep away camp to be honest.) It should not be required for others to pay for my tuition or for anyone elses, unless they can afford it easily and want to give it to that tzeddaka. No one is “required” to give tzeddaka to any one institution as long as they do “family before others, their community before outside ect”. I think I misread part of it but still we disagree on some things…

in reply to: YESHIVAS: Alef & Beis Or Same Level? #656851

esther h- no. Life is about working to better yourself and knowing that “not everything is fair”. Schools dont want to make anyone feel bad, but in fact by not pushing them they are hurting them. The best thing would be to have some classes split and others together.

Reasons to split: (i like lists;) )

    1. Each level will be taught at their level. Always there will be some who are higher than others and teachers want to teach to the average kid. So if it is split, the smartest are pulled out and the average is now a lot lower…

    2. More attention per child at the level they need.

    3. Those who are not outstanding or failing are lost if everyone is mushed. At least if kids are split, they still can stand out easier.

    4. kids can make friends who are at their level. I was in a class ages ago when I was smarter than the rest of the class (not to boast- I was in the low class). My friends were all in the higher class and I felt so out of place because I understood the material already and was sitting there bored while other kids still didnt understand it. This is how it would be if the classes were not split- kids sitting there bored while other kids couldnt get the hang of it.

    5. You are less likely to have too many kids who cant read and write by the time they leave high school.

    Reasons to keep them together:

    1. the teachers might like it- they have to teach to a lower level. (I am not being fair- but some teachers like it…they dont have to change the material year to year based on the level. The average stays the same each year.)

    2. You dont get the shidduch question “well, was he/she in the honors chumash track or the low track?”

    3. Esteem for the lower level kids.

    4. The teachers are forced to keep the pace of the class moving and the lower half the class will be forced to learn the material.

    5. You wont get the excuse “but we’re the low class… its too hard for us”

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658135

GAW- wait a minute wait a minute!!!

    1. Education is a necessity. At least homeschooling is pikuach nefesh, if one cannot go to the standard type of school. So if you wont homeschool, tuition is a necessity!

    2. Why should the entire community cover the tuition “anyways”? Everyone must do what they can!

    3. It is a personal choice not to work or get an education past high school. It is a choice and they need to live with it. Personal responsibility- I should not have to pay for someone else’s selfishness. Why should I pay for an education (college, skill or trade school ect) when everyone else would pay my bills when I can’t? If you wont get an education, then you wont be able to afford to raise a large family. I am terrible at transliteration but you all know the quote: Dont place your chumros at the expense of others. You dont want to go to school and get a real job (chumra, not a halacha) so you go on the public dole. They made it so that they have no ability to take care of their kids. It isnt “bderech teva”- it is selfishness. They want to do what they want to do and they want the community to take care of them. Personal Responsibility!!!!

    Midwest 2-

By the way schizophrenia can be inherited. Not just as you say “The only sure way to be at risk is to marry the identical twin of someone who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.” It is not small enough a chance to worry. It can be genetic,or a fluke or conditions in the womb. or it can happen because of life choices someone makes (drugs ect) Schizophrenia is quite severe and should be taken seriously and the person NEEDS HELP. Dont say that “if dor yeshorim isnt testing for it you shouldnt worry. Dor yeshorim mostly tests for JEWISH GENETIC diseases and ones prevalent to many in the Jewish community (because of where they came from).

Other thing are genetic (diabetes is one of them. It is normal to test children of certain types of diabetes, especially when the diabetes is severe and not due to weight or other conditions ect)

Some things are definitely not (as far as current data): spina bifida, epilepsy

in reply to: Therapy – To Tell or Not to Tell? #657408

iswhatitis- If you read most of what I wrote dealt with MENTAL ISSUES, not people seeking advice from professionals. I am sorry if it was unclear but all I meant was that if there is a mental issue, then you should tell the prospective side the extent of it. Common advice and needing someone as a sounding board for their ideas (not because of any “issues”) does not fall into the category of my comments. I only want to stop people from hiding real issues from the prospective side to stop so many divorces and family issues because one side hid something really important from the other.

Thank you for your misunderstanding. 😉

It is a little late to complain about this… we all knew this was coming…

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658123

Now that we are in a fiscally tough times, we have to have a tighter rein on our money and where we spend it. Prioritize prioritize prioritize.

    What is better,

to support married kollel couples or our own children in kollel?

    That vacation?

Going to the Catskills? (If anyone went and is not paying tuition- be ashamed.)

Or giving proper education to our children?

There must be a better way…Maybe if we set up a “no frills” school- strictly no frills…

No major trips, no fancy building or furniture, no new paint job every year. no huge bulletin boards ect. Why waste school money and time?

Books can be bought second hand- I know a frum teacher who wanted new books (secular studies teacher) for her class and the school couldnt afford it so she got in touch with a teacher in a fancy secular private school who said that her students are required to buy their own books every year in high school so why not ask them to send it to you for free? This frum high school now got one year old books in amazing condition (ok they were highlighted and written in a bit, but pretty good for being free).

Teachers can be paid on time and tuition wont be that much compared to other schools.

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658111

kapusta- I agree that a vacation can be recharging, but make it a “stay-cation” or make it small. keep it minimal and dont make your “battery recharge” be on the expense of others. I have absolutely no problem with sending the kids to grandma and going to a hotel for a few days. What I have an issue with is when people go to E”Y for a few weeks in the summer or pay a lot of money to go to a hotel for Pesach or own a second home or something large like that and cannot afford tuition. What if you knew that because you upgraded to a nicer hotel room that the school cannot afford to stay open and a few hundred kids are out of school. It all has to be in proportion. That’s all.

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658108

just me- I hate to say it but

a)people all over the country are hurting.

b)housing prices for small houses or apartments (not huge homes either) in some other communities (not all but some) are even higher.

c)people all over the country cant pay their bills.

d)people are cutting back and only paying for necessities everywhere

    IT ISNT JUST IN BROOKLYN!

There are those people everywhere who have a hard time cutting back. How many of you in the CR have gone to the mountains this summer? How many have paid to send their kids to sleep away camp? Gone on a vacation? Redecorated part of their house? Went to Eretz Yisrael this past year? Own a second home/apartment/timeshare/bungalow???

If you answered yes to any of these questions, I think you should have a hard time answering to why they cant pay tuition. None of these are “basic necessities” but many people here have stated that it is “pikuach nefesh” to keep these schools open. Hmm. Is eating out at a fancy restaurant pikuach nefesh? Going to the Catskills?

Its Elul and thats the time for a proper cheshbone hanefesh. Maybe its time for a monetary cheshbon.

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658105

SJS- even “non luxury schools” have overheads just like other schools…

It seems from the posters that tuition is lower in BYBP but it must not be covering their needs as too many parents are paying. This is an endless cycle and giving money seems like throwing money down the drain unless accountants and professionals are able to look where the money is going. Are there too many secretaries? Staff? do they spend too much on extras?

in reply to: Yeshiva Delay – Children Sitting Bored For Week At Home #657037

Lets get practical here… instead of complaining list all great ideas you have to keep your kids busy over the next week plus.

What projects, games, small trips, or activities do you have planned for your kids? It seems like we all knew this was coming so where are the high school girls looking to make some extra money with a day camp for the next week???

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658100

Joseph- I disagree with you here. It takes a lot of planning but it can be very rewarding. Your kids can end up smarter and ahead of their grade-counterparts and they learn many skills like perseverance and individual work. They also gain an inner drive to work by themselves and for themselves. They can really gain an interest in the subject matter and if they are able to help pick some of it, they will be even more interested! (like american history, state history, world history ect and can concentrate on aspects that they are interested in, not what the teacher likes).

It is a cheaper alternative that can reap fabulous results. The parents dont have to do the teaching themselves as long as there is one parent per level. Or you can join similar levels together for subjects that it doesnt matter what age they are and give different assignments on the topic.

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658099

Ok, with homeschooling I have some ideas… you can get together with other families who cannot afford tuition or do not like the schooling options in your area or have special needs children (ranging from too smart for their class to remedial). You need a few kids the same age range or ability level to get together in one person’s house.

    You have two options:

a)hire a tutor to teach the material. This could be a retired teacher or one who is out of work during the recession.

b)split the teaching between the parents. One parent does kodesh classes, another chol.

    About payment:

a)Each parent pays a certain amount

b)The money can be pooled and pays for the teaching supplies (teacher’s edition of textbook, to copy pages for the students ect) and a small sum for the parent who’s house it is in (extra electricity, gas, water, to clean up from the mess). Money can also be split amongst the teachers evenly. With this money they can pay for their children to be a part of the “homeschool” if they cant afford it on their own.

If done right, it should cost less as there will be less overhead. No secretaries, no mortgage, no fancy equipment.

books should be paid for individually but make sure its the same edition and textbook!

hope this helps. If you have any questions, let me know!

in reply to: Budget Crisis! Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Cannot Open Yet This Year #658091

Joseph- Oh, you can instead call parents and tell them not to send their children to school because they cannot pay. Some schools are not letting kids into classes if their parents were unable to pay. And that is not embarrassing?

    in reply to: MONEY #656369

zach kessin- You also have to take into account that the country is:

a)bigger than in the great depression

b)wealthier before this current depression than before the great depression of 1929.

    and that:

    c) this is a shorter time span into the recession than your statement about 1933. Thats 4 years, while Obama is only in power for about 7 months, and it was only during the last year or so of Bush (and not as bad as now once the stimulus bill was passed).

    d) our government is run by some of the dumbest people in the history of the country! I mean if the stimulus bill was going to stop joblessness, than I guess 10 is less then 8. I just dont know my numbers! 8 is a big number and 9, 10 and 12 are all smaller numbers. Yes, in parts of the country joblessness has grown to such inordinate amount of people!

in reply to: A Mouse In My House #993946

They make these boxes- more pricey than the slapstick cheese traps (by the way try peanut butter as well) that the mice walk into and die. I think it is a glue trap (no way did I set them out or deal with them) but you threw away the whole box so it was a neater clean up job…

Check out major appliances like ovens, dishwashers ect. Look inside and behind them because they might be hiding there. Unfortunately we found out the hard way… cooked mouse. Check for their presence in these appliances and behind them ect. If they are in your kitchen and something major like a dishwasher stops working- they might have eaten the cords.

-when you give the price of “most BY schools” are those only including NY BYs? unfortunately many schools cost more than that.

-With 4,000 a child a year: how can you pay the teachers? how can you pay rent? electricity? gas/heat/air conditioning?

Especially when you say that many students dont pay the full amount…

-Re: splitting the kids who cant pay amongst other schools: Do girls have to apply to high school? Is there a real application/interview set up? Do the elementary schools help the girls pick high schools? Can the girls get some direction as to what schools they should apply (meaning as to not cause the school too much financial strain)…

NY MOM- well said re: siblings! A person who is able to manage living with a sibling who has problems (disabled, ill ect) is a true baal/as middos as they have been tested and found to be great, rather than just good (and never had a test)- they may be lucky that they werent tested but life is about tests, isnt it? Although it should still be told (if genetic components) early on, it should be with a certain level of respect that they have been able to get this far with all of life’s tests. They can be tested later on in life and you will have an inkling now how they will deal with it.

Maybe the girls that cant pay should be split amongst all the schools… that way no one school is hit too hard.

azoilis- just because 900 are from flatbush it doesnt mean that 900 cant pay. Unless you are saying that there are 900 out of 2100 that cant pay…
