Good question. I gave this some thought. I don’t think “Harry” is called “Harry” to his face. It’s a term for internal use only. You also have to understand that referring to someone as a Harry doesn’t mean the guy is lower down in his avodas Hashem (usually he’s higher up). It means he doesn’t fit in socially and this is important to know in certain situations. For example, it might be necessary to explain why this guy wouldn’t be a good shidduch for a particular girl. Or, if a chaburah wants to only allow in a certain “type,” they would use need to use this word to explain why this person doesn’t fit in.
Still, you’re asking, why do the Yeshivish not embrace the “Harry”s since they are trying to become the “perfect Yeshivish Jews”? I think the answer is that just like not everyone is a Kohen or a Levi – you’re born into it – so too is the status of Yeshivish (for the most part). It’s a fact of life: you need to be born into it to be Yeshivish. A Harry is just not Yeshivish. Period. Just like a chair is not a table, a Harry is not Yeshivish. He has to accept the sheivet he was born into, so to speak.

Israel is a Jewish State. We can’t demand the law force the seculars to keep the Torah, but we can demand that the law accommodate those that wish to do so.
Just VisitingParticipantNOYB: I’m sure your right, Jewish music has always been modernizing together with the broader trends, But I would say there is a difference: Music has always been a means of connecting to Hashem or something in ruchniyos. Today it is by and large a form of entertainment or a nerve calmer. In my opinion it’s a מעשה שטן because we have more capabilities now of creating new music than we ever had before – if that was being used in the right way, it would be an incredibly powerful force against the יצר הרע.
Just VisitingParticipantAvraham Freid is the best performer. When he performs on stage, he really connects you to the music.
Just VisitingParticipantYeshiva Man 613 in his first paragraph is correct: The MAIN reason we are not sending our boys to the army is the [lack of] ruchniyos state in the army. I’m in Eretz Yisroel and that is what EVERYONE says is the main reason. No gadol would tell a chareidi boy who is not learning in Yeshiva to go to the army just because he’s not learning.
So why is the “learning protects” argument used so often?
Answer in my opinion: The reason the “learning protects” is used a lot is 1) For formulating a draft law It’s a more defined פטור than “Chareidi.” They could make a law about Yeshiva students, but not about “Chareidim” because how do you define who is a chareidi? 2) It is the answer to the opposition’s claim of “share the burden. They have to understand that in our eyes we are sharing the burden. 3) It negates the possibility of a law that requires every Yeshiva student to go to the army which would in fact be dangerous in terms of losing the zechus hatorah.
Just VisitingParticipantMaybe Flexidox?
Just VisitingParticipantOpinion: The concept of a gartel is a special garment for tefillah. Shulchan Aruch 98:4 וראוי שיהיו לו מלבושים נאים מיוחדים לתפלה כמו בגדי כהונה
(The “separation” concept is fulfilled with today’s pants.) A gartel belongs and looks nice with a long jacket to help close the jacket – like a typical kittel or long raincoat has. But it makes no sense to wear with a short jacket. It’s not a “nice garment” when worn with a short jacket. Those that wear the gartel with the short jacket is because they are keeping the mesorah of their parents, etc. But to start it now…?
Here’s some other ideas to improve davening: 1) come on time 2) look in the siddur 3) buy and bring your own siddur 4) have a minyan kavuah 5) buy and bring your own table shtender. 5) sometimes less shuckeling helps!

Just VisitingParticipantIt looks like this post was a copy and paste from ChatGPT.
While I find ChatGPT to be good at giving over information, I often find it to be missing a certain “human element” (for obvious reasons). But what I mean by that is a little hard to define. In this case, I would say ChapGPT gave over too much information in too little space for a person to comprehend and absorb. Each of these sentences should be paragraphs or chapters of a book, fleshing out its meaning and application in our daily lives.
Just VisitingParticipantA therapist can “diagnose” your problem. If it’s a problem in a relationship and you don’t know why you can’t get on board / connect with a particular person, a therapist can help figure out why that’s happening. That knowledge alone is valuable – even if you don’t work with him to solve the issue.
Just VisitingParticipantGoing to therapy can help. It’s not just the “therapy” that actually helps. It’s a combination of 1) the therapist’s genuine interest in your problem and helping you gain confidence in yourself that you can work through it 2) the client being forced to build self awareness and work through the issue 3) the tools therapy provides which have been proven to work through case studies.
May 27, 2025 2:03 pm at 2:03 pm in reply to: Writing notes, Chazoro and Memorising my Learning #2403960Just VisitingParticipantWrite shorthand notes during shiur in the following style
Q –
A-
S –
where Q is a question A is answer and S is statement. That will help you follow the Rebbe’s train of thought.
Afterwards, write the shiur over again in complete sentences and copying over the מראה מקומות your Rebbi brought in Shiur.
I very highly recommend the English sefer “Ben Yeshiva” by Rabbi Lopiansky. You should get some good guidance there.
If your goal is to remember your learning 3,5,10 years from now, then memorizing shakla v’tarya is not going to be very helpful. You want to focus on the Maskanos of the sugyos. You can write down the maskanos on index cards. One maskanah per card. If there is a key chakirah in the sugyah that would also be an index card – chakiros can go in a separate compartment. Very important to write on paper, not a computer. Hatzlacha!Just VisitingParticipantLarge screen in the living room might not be a bad idea, but it is not the answer for a struggling bochur (or anybody). You need a good filter, preferably coupled with WebChaver. And be in touch with GYE.
Just VisitingParticipantI think it would be a worthwhile investment for you to buy Chassan Torah – you’ll get a lot of exercise when the Gabbai says, “Yaamod, yaamod, yaamod….”
Just VisitingParticipantPersonally, I believe learning in Yeshiva should consist of Bekios with unlimited chazzarah. Make chazzarah the goal. And iyun kal. I feel many bochurim don’t enjoy learning because they’re not learning – they’re trying to “do iyun.” Learning is enjoyable, let the bochurim learn and they’ll enjoy it. Don’t fluff it up. Don’t dump a ton of mefarshim on them. Keep it simple – gishmak. I think many Yeshivos system of learning could and eventually will do some overhaul on this. After the shidduch crisis it dealt with… Meanwhile, whatever the Yeshivos are doing are keeping klal yisrael alive and thriving. We couldn’t exist without them – no matter what derech halimud they are teaching. Their main accomplishment is creating “bnei torah” which a bochur absorbs just by being in the walls of the yeshiva and beis medrash. So critiquing the learning style is not critiquing the Yeshiva itself. It’s a פרט in the Yeshiva.
Just VisitingParticipantWhy not be proactive? Educate your clients (and the public) about how to avoid these problems! If you can invest 500,000nis or more, you can get in the Israeli market with an investment firm without running in to the tax issue. Otherwise, invest in US funds. I presume the self employed individual can find a work-around and get himself / herself technically employed – no?

2) Just report the news – like what actually happened – not an opinion about what happened. Anyone else feel the same way about that? disagree?Just VisitingParticipantI’ve had that experience with more than one therapist. In that field it’s about finding the right therapist / client “shidduch” otherwise it could be frustrating like you’re saying …
