February 3, 2017 9:09 am at 9:09 am in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213976Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantLF – there is no limit to Hashem’s Powers even if there is to yours. It is always kidai to daven (or give brachos).
“And why, for Heaven’s sake, do you think you deserve any better than my Ishti.”
I guess you forgot to give her a bracha. 🙂 it’s not too late though.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI’m so sorry :(. Just try to keep reminding yourself that midterms are meaningless, and you will be finished school in a year and a half Im Yirtzeh Hashem, and then all of this will be meaningless!!!
Unfortunately, school is the main part of your life now, but once you finish school, it is meaningless, and for most of your life it will be something from the distant past that you barely remember and doesn’t matter anymore.
I had a very hard time in high school, but now I barely remember it.
Did you speak to the social worker yet? How did it go?

In any case, Hatzlacha!!!! It sounds like a really annoying matzav, so I hope it gets resolved soon!!!!

Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantFuturePotus – I’ve heard of and seen his book, but I’m not sure if I ever actually read it.
Once when I asked someone about a guy who was redt to me he told me that he’s really, really smart but just enough below genius to still be normal.
Not that geniuses can’t be normal, but it makes sense that it might be harder for them.
In terms of qualities needed to get ahead in life, I often feel like some of the most important ones were missing from my education. They don’t necessarily teach you in school all of the things that you need to know the most. It makes sense that EQ could be more important than IQ. Of course, the best is to have both.
February 2, 2017 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213972Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantLF – ok, I’m sorry, I hope you’re moichel me. I could still use a bracha from someone so chashuve though if you want to give me one anyhow.
DY- Amen! Thanks for the bracha and for pointing out my error.
February 2, 2017 4:32 pm at 4:32 pm in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213968Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantDY – because I was the only one who mentioned him.
But if I’m wrong and he wants an apology and a bracha, I’m happy to give them to him. Let me know, LF.
Now you owe me a bracha, DY 🙂 (unless you’re right, in which case I owe you a bracha).
But either way, I could always use an extra bracha.

Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantYAY!! Great idea!!! Sorry that we didn’t think of it.
WELCOME! Hatzlacha Rabba! And enjoy!!
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantTell him you think chocolate is healthier. It doesn’t make crumbs, so no halachic issues.

February 2, 2017 3:27 pm at 3:27 pm in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213965Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantJoseph – so it’s really just a guess then?
How do people become moderators anyhow? Do old moderators recruit their friends?
February 2, 2017 3:26 pm at 3:26 pm in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213964Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantLF- I was talking about this:
No one was speaking LH about you, chas v’chalila! Now you owe me a bracha for being chosheid me b’kshairim.
I’ll take a bracha for a zivug hagun – someone really, really nice, and warm and sweet but also self-confident and has good social skills and a sense of humor, chilled-out but has depth, is intelligent and a ben Torah and ben aliyah and is emotionally healthy. I’ll also take a bracha for parnassah and health and happiness.
Thank you!
February 2, 2017 2:46 pm at 2:46 pm in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213960Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantModerator 25 – just warning you – you need tough skin over here in the CR – so I certainly hope you can deal with this!!! (and yes, I realize you were probably joking).
I’ve had to learn to be a lot less sensitive since I joined the CR last summer. It’s the only way to survive here. (and, yes, for those of you who have gotten to know me, I realize that’s a relative statement).
I don’t know what it’s like at your end of the computer – I can only speak for this end – but I’m guessing it might be harder. Of course, you have the advantage of being able to delete any insulting or rude posts as you desire, close threads, and block people.
Anyhow, you sound like a nice person, so I hope your addition will improve the CR and make it a really nice place (which it is most of the time.)
Hatzlacha! Welcome, and have a great Shabbos!!!!
February 2, 2017 2:39 pm at 2:39 pm in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213959Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantLB – thanks for the compliment. I like that about 2 + 5 = 7.
Moderator 25 – meet Lightbrite. She is the nicest poster ever, the sweetest, cutest, and most sincere!
February 2, 2017 2:38 pm at 2:38 pm in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213958Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantMammele- I’m moichel. I would give you a lollipop, but I’m out of lollies at the moment.
The funny thing is that it turns out you were right after all, but I don’t think that’s what LF meant – I think he was just making a joke which turned out to be true…
Unless I’m wrong, and he somehow knew about it, but I don’t know how that’s possible, and I think he even said that he was joking.
Good point about Chanuka – I thought of that afterwards.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantLB – there is a halachic problem with deliberately dropping crumbs on the floor.
February 2, 2017 3:51 am at 3:51 am in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213951Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantJoseph – what are you talking about?
February 2, 2017 3:50 am at 3:50 am in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213950Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantSorry if I made you feel bad about it. That was probably rechilus 🙁
And it wouldn’t have even helped if you had moderated and deleted since it was only rechilus for you.
So now I need to try to undo the rechilus by making you feel better about it. At least 25 is a nice number. I mean you could have gotten a meaningless number like 43 or 3,758. 25 is a very meaningful number. It’s the square of 5 and it’s one quarter of a century or a dollar. It even looks pretty, unlike 43 (I hope there’s no moderator 43 or I’m in trouble….)
February 2, 2017 3:16 am at 3:16 am in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213944Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantWhy do they recycle names? If I were a moderator, I would want my own name.
In any case, welcome Moderator 25!
How many moderators are there anyhow? Have there really been 100 altogether, or do they skip numbers? How many are there currently?
February 2, 2017 2:29 am at 2:29 am in reply to: Welcome YW Moderator-21 and YW Moderator-25 #1213940Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI’m so confused – is 25 an old moderator, or is he/she a new moderator with an old name, or is he/she an old moderator who left and came back?
It sounds like it’s choice B. Am I right?
February 2, 2017 2:05 am at 2:05 am in reply to: PSA – Do thorough research before making public halachic statements #1215745Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI think I learned what PSA meant from the CR. Never heard of the other meaning until now.

February 2, 2017 2:04 am at 2:04 am in reply to: apparently my niece is related to Meno's father #1213367Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantLB – I’m not sure. Ask Meno how to pronounce his name. I know my niece pronounced it differently than I did, but now I forgot which way I pronounced it and which way she pronounced it.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantWell if you’re new, welcome aboard!!!
February 2, 2017 2:02 am at 2:02 am in reply to: I know they are a great organization, but… #1213678Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantFrom various Gedolim stories I have heard over the years, it sounds like the Gedolim don’t approve of that type of approach.
Also, it doesn’t help in the long run. When they find out they have been fooled, they will be mad, and it will backfire. You have to be seicheldik about these things.
You’re dealing with people, not with machines. You can also take someone and tie him up so he won’t be able to be mechalel Shabbos, but that’s not our approach. The point is to get him to do it for the right reasons. We don’t force people to keep Mitzvos because that would be missing the point. The point isn’t to get the Mitzvos to be kept – the point is to get the PERSON to keep the Mitzvos because it is good for him and connects him to Hashem. If it’s done out of force, it is meaningless. Tricking people is similar.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipanthow does tired go to red? How does red go to beach? how does beach go to clinic? how does clinic go to Wednesday?
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantMod 25 – are you new?
February 2, 2017 12:53 am at 12:53 am in reply to: I know they are a great organization, but… #1213674Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantYes – that’s not the right way to get someone to keep Shabbos.

Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantFuturePotus: “So a person with an IQ of 180 had an equal chance of winning a Nobel Prize as one with an IQ of 140.”
I think it’s better to have an IQ of 140 than 180. It’s not kidai to be so much smarter than everyone else. And it’s not necessary either (as you pointed out).
There are a lot of qualities that are at least as important as IQ, and having too high an IQ can make it harder to attain those qualities (social skills, emotional balance and wellbeing, etc.)
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipanthuh?
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantBenignuman – They are an accurate measure of at least one type of ability – the ability to do well on standardized tests.
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI once went out with a guy who motioned for me to be quiet because he was trying to listen to someone else’s conversation.
I thought he was rude, but now I realize that he really just wanted to help them…
Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantLF – lol. good idea if you can pass it off. But you have to be the type who can pass these things off.
And the other guy has to be the type to listen to other people’s conversations….
There’s a story (maybe in the Gemara?) about some Talmidei Chachamim (Tanaim? Amoraim?) who were trying to figure out the meaning of a certain word in the Torah. The maid servant (or maybe it was someone’s wife or daughter) was very learned and she knew that it means a broom, so she called out to her maid servant, “Can you get the broom and sweep in here?” But she used the word they were trying to figure out, so they would realize that it means “broom”.
February 2, 2017 12:09 am at 12:09 am in reply to: I know they are a great organization, but… #1213672Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantThat’s true – you can’t. That would be the wrong approach. Toras Emes. You should not get people to keep the Torah through sheker. But I don’t think that’s what’s happenning here.
February 2, 2017 12:06 am at 12:06 am in reply to: apparently my niece is related to Meno's father #1213365Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantMeno, I also found out now how to pronounce your name. I used to pronounce it wrong.
Either I used to pronounce it with a long e, but it turns out it’s really a short e, or else it was the other way around. I forget now which way it was. I think it was the first way.
February 2, 2017 12:03 am at 12:03 am in reply to: apparently my niece is related to Meno's father #1213364Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantshe doesn’t read yet, so she can’t be dyslexic, c”v. Or at least I hope she doesn’t turn out to be dyslexic, and in any case, this can’t be proof of dyslexia.

February 1, 2017 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm in reply to: apparently my niece is related to Meno's father #1213361Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantsorry, meant to include that in the original post.
February 1, 2017 8:04 pm at 8:04 pm in reply to: I know they are a great organization, but… #1213670Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantJoseph – By Ohr HaTorah, I assume you mean Ohr Sameach?
There’s also OORAH, JEP, Neve, EYAHT, Jeff Seidel & the Jewish Student Information Center, Heritage House and probably a bunch of other things.
Anyhow, there’s no reason to compare. All those places do great stuff and NCSY does great stuff too. And whether or not one feels that one should “blast NCSY” really has nothing to do with whether or not there are other programs. If NCSY is problematic, it’s problematic, and if it’s not, it’s not regardless of what else there is.
But either way, no one should be blasting it, and certainly not here. And I don’t think anyone was. I think this thread was just about one particular possible concern that probably applies to the whole kiruv world in general and is probably inevitable to some extent.
February 1, 2017 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm in reply to: PSA – Do thorough research before making public halachic statements #1215741Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantbtw,Iacisrmma, I am impressed that you read through Rav Ribiat’s sefer. That is something that I have been wanting to do for many years but never got around to it.
Aside from the fact that the size of the sefer makes it intimidating, by the time it came out, I was already used to Rav Eider and Shmiras Shabbos k’hilchasa, so it was psychologically hard for me to get into something else.
February 1, 2017 6:14 pm at 6:14 pm in reply to: PSA – Do thorough research before making public halachic statements #1215740Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantIacisrmma – thank you for mentioning Rav Cohen’s sefer. I thought of that after I posted. That could also be a good place for LB to start. I haven’t really read his sefarim so much, but they seem to be short, to the point, and practical. I have the impression they go less in depth and bring less opinions than the other sefarim, but that might actually be what LB needs right now.
For the laws of cooking on Shabbos, there is a small illustrated booklet with pictures which makes the halachos easy to read and understand.
