    DaasYochid:

That’s a reference to her kavana, not to her ability. Your argument was about her ability. And if your argument is in fact about kavana no different knowledge of her kavana after she learns herself than he did before she learns herself, yet you assumed that it would be ok for him to teach her once she already learns herself.

    DaasYochid:

According to your understanding of the Perisha, it should be assur for her to learn herself as well because she doesn’t know if she will be ????? ????? ????? ????. In other words both her and any potential teacher are in the same position of not knowing what her learning will lead to. So it would either be assur for both or muttar for both. Unless you are saying that it is in fact assur for her to learn herself, but once she learns herself b’issur she can prove that she is capable of learning and then anyone can teach her. But I really don’t think that’s what the Perisha is saying.

And I think it’s even more clear from the Maharil that as long as she takes the initiative, it demonstrates ???? ?????? ???? and it’s ok.

The R’ Elyashiv is from He’aros Chagiga 3a.

I would tend to agree that we can’t and shouldn’t impose it on them. Perhaps we shouldn’t even be imposing what we do impose. I would think that optional classes are ok.

    Trust:

That’s why we have the Maharil:

?????? ????? ???? ??? ??? ????? ????? ?? ?? ??? ????? ???? ????? ???? ?????? ???? i.e. she shows that her kavana is good. There is no difference in her kavana if she opens an Artscroll, or asks her father to teach her.

    And the Derisha:

??? ?? ???? ????? ??? ????? ????? ????? ???? ??? ???? ??? ?? ??? i.e. she takes herself out of the rov which again there would be no difference if she opened an Artscroll or asked father to teach her.

    And R’ Elyashiv:

Again no difference between Artscroll and her Father.

When you say that you would say that I’m nuts, would that be because I would be saying that Chazal made a mistake, or because I would be saying that specifically in this inyan they made a mistake?

I’m not (although I am curious what your response would be if I was). I am saying that Chazal assered that it was bad, and it was bad. But that doesn’t mean that it will always be bad under all circumstances, or that it can’t be overridden by something even more bad or that on an individual basis it’s also bad.

And the Rambam and SA codify that by saying that Chazal commanded us not to teach her.

Correct, but the fact remains that Chazal never said it’s assur; they were against it because of a bad result. Which is tantamount to saying that if this result will not happen then it would be ok to teach girls Torah. So at most there could be a machlokes in metzius if in our current circumstances, teaching girls will cause tiflus and if it will cause more tiflus than not teaching them.

    DaasYochid:

Why are you assuming that it means assur? If the Shulchan Aruch wanted to say that it’s assur he had the vocabulary to do so. E.g. ???? ???? to refer to the father or ???? ????? to refer to the woman herself. In fact, I don’t know of any other place in Shulchan Aruch where he uses the lashon of ??? ??”?.

Lichora that is the pashtus of the Mishna:

    ???? ???? ?? ???? ???? ??? ???? ?? ??? ???? ??? ???? ??? ?????? ???? ?? ?”? ???? ?? ????? ??? ???? (?????) ????? ?????

Ben Azzai says you’re chayav and R’ Eliezer doesn’t respond that you’re not chayav or that it’s assur; he responds that it will have a bad result.

    Little Froggie:

You left out a key word from that Medrash:

    ?????? ?????? ??? ?? ?????? ???? ?? ???? ???? ????? ??? ???? ????? ??? ?? ????? ?? ?????

    ????

    ???? ?? ?? ???? ???? ????? ????? ?? ??? ???? ????? ????? ????? ???? (???? ?? ?) ??? ?? ???? ???? ?? ???? ???? ????? ??? ???? ????? ??? ?? ??? ?? ????? ???? ?? ?? ?????

    (Sifrei in Beha’aloscha)

It doesn’t mean that if you hate the Jews then you by definition hate Hashem. It means that if you hate the Jews you are treated as if you hate Hashem. This can be proven from the Yalkut Shimoni, which brings this medrash but adds a line:

??? ?? ????? ?? ????? ???? ???? ???? ?? ???? ???? ????? which obviously does not mean that you literally helped Hashem. It means that you are treated as if you had helped Hashem.

Therefore, I don’t think it’s fair to assume that certain people hate Hashem. Maybe according to your perspective (which I am not disagreeing with) their actions would constitute hating Hashem. But they are not coming from this perspective. From their perspective they are doing what Hashem wants them to do. They might be 100% wrong and deserving of vilification but that doesn’t translate into them hating Hashem.

Then there was the time when the interviewer asked me what a certain Ramban was saying. When I told her that I had no idea, she asked me what a different Ramban was saying, and again I didn’t know. After about seven or eight repeats of this, one of the Rabbis walked in. I turned to the Rabbi and said “Just what we needed. Mrs. Interviewer really wants to know what the Ramban is saying and I haven’t the foggiest idea. Maybe you can help her.” She got this look on her face so I assumed she was embarrassed that she didn’t know the Rambans. So I said to her “Don’t worry about the fact that you can’t read a Ramban; I can’t either and I’m getting along just fine. And anyway I’m sure you have other good qualities. Like maybe you’re a good cook or something.” At that point she jumped up and shouted “I’LL HAVE YOU KNOW…” but I cut her off and said “there you go – you have a dramatic flair. Maybe you can join the Drama Club. I hear it’s good for shidduchim.” She then said “Young lady, I am married.” To which I responded “Really? Even though you couldn’t read a Ramban?”

At this point she was steaming (I’m not quite sure why; maybe the previous interviewee got her into a bad mood). She said “You insolent impertinent twerp! I have not seen such audacity in all my years of conducting interviews!”

I was starting to get a little uncomfortable. I was not really used to having a middle aged woman yelling at me for no apparent reason. So I said “maybe we should sing a song together. It’s really good for calming down.” (The Rabbi had already walked out so there was no kol isha issue.) Guess what? She slapped me. Right across the face. But I kept my cool and said “thank you for your time” and walked out.

I had been warned by my friends that they ask weird questions in the interview. So I prepared answers to all sorts of questions, such as “if you were an animal what would you be?”, “If you were a flower…”, If you were a drink…”, “If you were a car…”, etc.

But what they actually asked me was “If you were an element which one would you be?”

I was totally unprepared for that one. I started running through the periodic table in my mind but I couldn’t really think of an answer because my mind was occupied by the thought that if all girls had to be an element, shidduchim would be so much simpler – atomic number = dress size and atomic mass = weight.

The interviewer started losing patience so I just blurted out “Oxygen”.

But then I was asked to explain my choice. So I just said the first thing that popped into my mind:

“I want to be able to give life support to my husband.”

Needless to say, I was accepted on the spot.

    Popa:

Yes, if in actuality they are severely misguided then it would probably carry over to other things and your point in the other thread would stand, namely that you wouldn’t be able to trust anything they do. But people here are alleging that they actually hate Hashem. Doing something which Hashem hates is not the same as hating Hashem. So they might do other things against Hashem, but not necessarily because they hate Hashem. Simply because they think that that’s what Hashem wants.

    Popa:

Sam’s point there was that if an apikorus believes that he is not an apikorus then his status as an apikorus should have no practical ramifications for us. You pointed out there, that if the reason why he believes that he is not an apikorus is that he is following a shita which you believe to be out of bounds, then he would be suspect of doing so in all areas of halacha and cannot be trusted at all. In other words his misguidedness is relevant on a practical level.

Here though, the Neturei Karta folk believe that they are doing the Ratzon Hashem. You can point out that they are misguided and you can try to convince them to change, but I don’t see how you can know that they hate Hashem. They might love Hashem more than anyone here, but they just don’t know how to properly show it. Unless you are asserting that they are lying to themselves, but I don;t know how you could prove that either. Just to be clear, I am not defending Neturei Karta in any way shape or form; I’m just pointing out that it does not necessarily follow from their actions that they hate Hashem, and if the issue is whether they hate Hashem, it is irrelevant whether they are right or wrong.

Note to Mods: This post is very long and earlier today my long post of a quote from the Chasam sofer took six hours to be posted. I assure you that there is nothing in this post which would require moderation. You don’t need to read it. It is purely a collection of the rishonim and acharonim on the sugya that Secretagentyid brought up. So please don’t take forever to approve it. Thank you.

    The Gemara (58a) says:

    ???? ?? ?????? ????? ??????? ????? ???? ???? ??? ????? ??????? ????? ?????? ???? ???? ???? ???’ ?”? ????? ??????? ????? ???? ???? ??? ????? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ???? ???????? ????? ?? ???

Seemingly there would be two requirements: 1) 600,000 “intellects” 2) 600,000 faces. While Moshe Rabbeinu might satisfy the first requirement, presumably he would not satisfy the second requirement.

However, on the next amud, the Gemara quotes the story which you mentioned:

    ?? ??? ??? ???? ???? ??? ????? ??? ????? ?????? ???? ??? ??? ????? ???? ??? ???? ???? ??? ???? ?????? ??????? ??? ???? ???? ??? ??? ?????? ?????? ???????? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???? ???????? ???????? ????? ?????? ????? ??? ????? ??????? ?????? ???? ??? ???? ????? ??? ????? ???? ??? ????? ???? ??? ???? ??? ??????? ?????

What are we to make of this story?

The Ramban in Milchamos H’ writes:

    ??? ?????? ???’ ?”? ????? ??? ??? ??? ???? ???? ??? ????? ???? ????? ???? ??? ??????? ????? ?????? ?????? ?????? ???’ ?? ???? ??? ????? ???? ??? ???? ??????? ???? ????? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????? ???? ?? ???? ??? ??? ?????? ???? ???? ??? ????? ???? ???? ?? ?? ??? ???? ?????? ?? ?? ????? ????? ???? ????? ?????? ?? ??? ??? ??? ??? ?? ????? ????? ????? ???? ???? ???? ?? ?? ??? ???? ???? ???? ??? ????? ??? ?? ???? ?????? ????? ??? ???? ??????? ????? ????”? ???? ??? ???? ???????? ???? ?? ?? ???? ???? ??? ???? ?????? ????? ????? ????? ??? ??? ????? ???? ???? ?? ?? ??? ???? ???? ???? ??? ????? ???? ?????? ???? ????? ????? ????? ??? ???? ???? ??? ?????? ?????????? ??? ??? ???? ???? ???? ????? ?? ??? ?????? ??????? ?????? ???? ?????? ???? ?? ????? ???? ??? ???”? ???? ??? ????? ??? ???? ????? ??? ???? ??? ????? ?? ??”? ????? ??? ?????? ??? ????? ??? ?? ??????? ???”? ?????? ???? ???? ????? ???? ???? ????? ????? ????? ????? ?????? ??????? ???? ???????? ??? ????? ????? ????? ????? ???? ?????? ??? ????? ????? ????? ??? ?????? ???? ????? ???? ?? ??? ????? ????? ??? ??? ???? ??? ????? ??? ????? ???? ???? ??? ????? ????? ????? ???? ??

(Talmidei) Rabbeinu Yona on the side of the Rif, in explanation of the Gemara’s first statement, writes:

    ????’ ???? ??? ??? ??? ???? ????? ????? ????? ???? ???? ??? ?????

Similarly, the Tur in siman 224 paskens:

    ??? ???? ????? ??? ???? ????? ????? ???? ??? ????? ???? ????? ???? ??? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ??? ??”? ???? ???? ??? ?? ????? ???? ???? ??

    The Beit Yosef there writes:

    ??? ???? ????? ??? ???? ????? ????? ???’ ??? ????? ???? ?? ????? ??? ??? ??? ????? ???? ????? (??) ???”? ??? ??? ??? ?????? ???? ??? ?? ???? ???? ??? ????? ??? ????? ?? ?? ????? ??????? ???? ?????? ?? ??? ???? ???? ??? ???? ???? ????? ???? ??? ??? ???? ?????”? ?? ??? ?? ????? ????? ???? ?????? ??? ????? ????? ??? ?????? ????? ??? ??? ???? ???? ?????? ?????? ????? ???? ???? ??? ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????? ?? ??? ???? ?? ???? ????? ????? ????? ??? ????? ????

The Bach there quotes the Beit Yosef and then writes:

    ?????? ??? ???? ??????? ??? ?? ????? ??? ???”? ???? ?????”? ???? ?? ????? ?? ??? ??? ???? ??? ????? ????? ???? ??? ????? ??? ??????? ????? ?????? ???? ?? ????? ??? ????? ????? ?? ????? ???? ???? ????? ??”? ????? ???? ??? ????? ???? ???? ??? ????? ????? ??????? ??? ????? ???? ???? ???? ???? ??? ???? ???”? ??? ???? ??? ??? ????”? ?????? ???? ?????? ?????”? ???? ????? ???? ???? ???? ???? ??? ????? ????? ????? ????? ??? ???? ?????? ???? ?????? ???? ?? ???? ?? ??? ??? ??? ?????? ???? ???? ???? ?? ???? ???

The Divrei Chamudos in Ose 27 also rejects the Beit Yosef’s pshat.

[In the Benayahu he explains that R’ Papa and R’ Huna didn’t put an ayin hara on R’ Chanina; the mekatregim and mastinim did. I.e. R’ Papa and R’ Huna weren’t necessarily castigating R’ Chanina for making the beracha.

    Summary:

It’s definitely a machlokes whether one says the beracha on a single great Torah Scholar. However, some of the objections of those who are against it might not apply to Moshe Rabbeinu.

Psak: When you see Moshe Rabbeinu, ask him what to do.

    Question:

Why can’t I make a two line break in a post? In my above seminary application there was supposed to be a two line break to make clear that “A few days later…” was not part of the original essay.

I was president of G.O…. but not too much.

I have given a lot of information about myself… but not too much.

A few days later, I realized that I had made a huge mistake. So I immediately emailed the following to the seminary:

    To whom it my concern,

I apologize profusely for my mistake but it seems as if I accidentally sent you my shidduch profile instead of my application essay. Please tell me how I should proceed.

    Sincerely,

    Patur Aval Assur

    They emailed me back:

    Dear Patur,

No apology is necessary. It was an honest mistake and we get it all the time. What you sent us is more than enough for us to determine that you are exactly what we are looking for.

    Fondly,

    The Hanhala

Even though I wasn’t mentioned, I’ll give you a couple of suggestions:

    1) Instead of reflexively responding, wait a little bit until you have restored your equilibrium.

    2) Before submitting a post, read it as if it was addressed to you. If you would feel hurt by it then don’t submit it.

By the way, I don’t think you bash that often. (Or maybe you just rarely disagree with other people’s viewpoints.)

    Randomex:

Machon Raya is known for its students asking for sources. As opposed to some other seminaries where a Rabbi/Teacher can just say an idea without providing a source. Therefore it is interesting that the seminary is called Machon Raya (although in actuality it is named after a person named Raya).

The reason someone wouldn’t get it is that he/she might not be aware of how the answer describes a Machon Raya girl.

I have another joke involving two seminaries but I’m not sure if I should say it. I’ll think about it overnight. In the meantime (though you might not get this one):

    Q. Why is it called Machon Raya?

    A. Because the girls always demand sources for everything.

    Q. What’s the difference between B’nos Sarah and B’nos Chavah?

    A. B’nos Chavah accepts non-Jews too. (According to Popa, they both accept non-Jews but ??????? ????? the Gemara in Avodah Zara 27a.)
