MA–money is mamash avoda zorah? So what do you use in exchange for goods and services? Also, why isn’t it assur behanaa?

Maybe someone should daven, fast and do teshuva so that Hashem will take away our yetzer hara for avoda Zara again

in reply to: Jewish Criagslist #1156365

MA–Really? Facebook has caused “millions” of divorces and intermarriages? Wow, that’s hectic.

Maybe someone should fast, do teshuva and daven on klal yisroels behalf

in reply to: reading the news #1211618

Maybe you haven’t fasted and done enough teshuva on our behalf?

Health– did you know vaccines are really bad? They cause autism and other problems. I saw a YouTube video that explained it all, and in the comments they explained it further. There are tons of proofs, Google-vaccines cause autism.

Also, did you know that the Jews are actually an ancient, shapeshifting alien race? I saw this YouTube video, Google- Jews are reptilians.

    Ahem.

    Siman, not woman.

in reply to: Spending too much time reading news #1191632

Can’t remember the exact woman, ??? maybe? It’s where the shulchan aruch talks about reading goyishe books.

IIRC(and it’s been about 6 months or so, and that was the first time I saw it, so I recommend you don’t rely on my quotation), he says that reading news which is going on now is (at least) ok, since it effects you and can make major differences to your life.

in reply to: Spending too much time reading news #1191630

Aruch hashulchan holds one should read the news(I could hear a different reading of him, but at the very least he holds its muttar and no issue of moshav leitzim or the like)

in reply to: Stealing permitted in order to save ones life? #1153443

Not to “judge” any specific decisions or cases, or Chas Veshalom to disrespect any Gedolim, but even Gedolim Talmidei Chachamim can make mistakes, and egregious ones at that.

in reply to: Shidduchim for Jews of color #1150975

I am not on shidduchim yet, but it is something I’ve thought about.

Basically, I’m open to anyone, as long as they fit what I’m looking for. Obviously, I need to be attracted to them(I’m not looking for supermodels), and the other character traits that I need to click with. If the girl who I feel is right for me is sfardi, chassidic, or of a different race, I don’t care.

I meant, consider people you find attractive, just don’t wait for someone who is drop dead gorgeous. As one of my maggidei shiur was wont to say “even though everyone expects it, 90% of people will not marry a supermodel”

in reply to: survey – how often do you [men] daven for the amud? #1141123

DY– Don’t know if there’s an I tan that way, but I have seen different people being very machmir or very makil regarding this. I personally try to daven from the amud(unless I’m worried I’ll be too slow/fast, different nusach etc), but I try to always give another aveil the chance to daven. I don’t want to try give an Aliya neshomo through causing machlokes

in reply to: Mayim Achronim #1140099

Better from a kli. Altz sakana, mistoma yotzei, altz kedusha, probably not.

Trivia–what liquids can you use for mayim acharonim?

in reply to: survey – how often do you [men] daven for the amud? #1141116

Joseph–Remember, that does depend on the situation. e.g, if you’re the best qualified to daven in those circumstances, you don’t have to refuse even once.

I daven from the amud 3 tefillos every 2 days.

in reply to: Mayim Achronim #1140097

Yes yes, we don’t have melach sdomis. But, as the Rambam says, there may be other salts with the same nature as melach sdomis. Also the aruch hashulchans chiluk between sea salt and other salts. Additionally, the amount of hot sauces, chilies, and charif spices and sauces used should require mayim acharonim for the same reason! In fact, I have heard second hand that Rav Mansour, did not do mayim acharonim, until he ate pizza, and after running his eyes had to go to the hospital do to the pizza spices.

Mashiach Agent—“Today we have smaller ones so that even people who need Kirov can hold onto Hashem Torah and Mitzvos”

What does that mean? If sifrei Torah were bigger people would not be able to become frum? What are you trying to say?

in reply to: Mayim Achronim #1140089

milk5–I was about to mention that shevet halevi. Interestingly, he writes that it is only within those poskim who hold its a chumra that woman would not have to do it.

Lemaase, I find it very shver that so many people are not noheg with mayim acharonim.

Ruva deruva rishonim, and most acharonim hold its a chiyuv. Why ignore them when it’s so easy to do?

(And when I say most, I mean, Rambam, Geonim(they had a machlokes whether to make a brocha or not), rif, machzor vitri, ritva, ramban, shu”t min hashomayim, yam shel Shlomo, tur beis Yosef, chida, gra, shulchan aruch harav, chayey odom, Ari, Yalkut Reuveini, kitzur sh”a, Kol hamekubalim(as quoted by the Magen avrohom I believe) chida, mishna berura, Kaf hachaim, aruch hashulchan hold either it’s a chiyuv, or good to do). While tosfos, the rosh, and the darchei Moshe (not in a hagoh) hold it is no noheg. The aruch hashulchan says about tosfos, and mistoma it works for the rosh and Rama as well, that he was being lomed zechus on those who do not do it(look at their exact loshon). I do not understand why people ignore all these poskim, when it is clearly the rov.

in reply to: Donald Trump is a jerk. #1137654

It really astounds me that Jews are pro trump. I honestly don’t understand how a Jew could like a man who reads mein kampf (according to an interview he gave he keeps a copy next to his bed, and he finds it really helps him with his speech giving), who hates minorities (why does everyone assume that because he’s too busy hating on Mexicans and Muslims he won’t get down to us), and who is an all round chameleon (he changes his views practically every day). This is just besides the fact that he’s a blatant egomaniac, a megalomaniac whose major point is that he has successful businesses(how many have been sued, the subject of class action lawsuits, gone bankrupt, or otherwise become defunct), and who is totally out of touch with the world(remember when he was calling bill gates to shut down the internet because it was mocking him?) And that his supporters are rabidly mad( all the videos of them attacking people, also THE WOMAN WHO SENT HIM A LETTER ASKING HIM TO PUT THE JEWS IN INTERNMENT CAMPS!!!!!!! This is who you are allying with?!?!!!!)

I lean far more towards the republican side than the liberal side, but this man is an absolute joke. And the fact that he is popular, speaks absolute volumes about the current state of the US.

“There are some bugs (mites) that are so small that once they infest lettuce, they are difficult to spot even using a lightbox.”

If the bugs are that small, do we really have to worry about them?

Asking seriously here, I have always understood the situation to be that were only worried about bugs that are visible to the human eye(i.e. Don’t require a microscope to find them etc). If that’s the case, aren’t an enormous amount of the bug worries unfounded?

in reply to: Why Doesn't YWN And Aish Report The Root Behind Jihad Terrorist Attacks #1137338

OP—There are multiple streams of Islam, plus the modern orthodox equivalent. Sufi Islam,

For example(the more kabbalistic) version, is beshita against violence and jihad. They interpret jihad to be a metaphoric and spiritual battle.

There are over 1 billion Muslims in the world, if they were all murderous terrorists, what situation would we be in?

As frumJews, since we’re expected to be at the very least conversant with the Torah, we often misunderstand other religions. Most Xtians have never read the New Testament. The vast, vast majority of Muslims have never read the Quran. Even from the frum ones, an enormous amount have not been through their basic religious texts.

in reply to: Reasons to do teshuva and why the world is in such a bad situation #1117007

Rebyid–If only you cried and fasted as much as I do, you would see what a terrible situation the world is in. The world is in such a bad place, and people should just trust in Hashem and fast and cry and yearn for happiness and then they will be happy. I will be fasting 72 hour fasts as Hashem wants until moshiach comes. Maybe if everyone else would abandon their avoda zoro, throw away their money and instead trade with commerce, then Hashem would see how much we yearn for it. Hashem sends us messages, and I’m telling you these messages are that we must yearn, and you must all do teshuva now(unless you are already fasting and yearning and crying, in which case you’re perfect without the teshuva)

It’s in ????? ?: ?;??. There’s a kri uksiv there. The ksiv is ???, the kri is ??. The value given for pi is 3.

Kavah(111) divided by kav(106)=1.04716981. Multiply that by 3(to get what we really need) =3.14150943. Pi, valid to 4 decimal places.

in reply to: Quiz Type Questions: Tanach #1106620

The pi question–it’s in melachim, Shlomo hamelech makes a pool. However from the pashtus of the possuk, pi is 3. The Gra has a whole shtickle to solve this.

Stam–What is your position on things such as Treacher-Collins Syndrome? Downs Syndrome? Cystic Fibrosis?

Pneumonia? Tuberculosis? Emphysema? Lupus? Are these all caused by eating incorrectly? Can they all be cured by eating correctly? (you posted the Gra’s position that all illnesses are caused by eating incorrectly, not calling you a liar, but I want to see it inside myself. You posted where it is, so be Beezras HaShem I will have a look at it soon, but the Gra specifically did NOT study pharmacology). If you say they all are caused by food, and can be treated through diet and exercise, good luck. Treacher-Collins for example, Amongst many other things, means that at birth the child could be missing cheekbones, and missing or have malformed ears. The worst case in medical history involved a woman being born missing 40% of her facial bones.

in reply to: Davening a Long S"E #1215650

I was told that Rav Shteinman was asked what people can do to avoid making they’re tefillos “Keva”. He said that some days you must shorten your S”E, some days you must lengthen it, but you can’t daven a shemonei esrei of exactly the same length every day.

in reply to: Showers in the 9 days #1093945

During the summer months, I can easily shower three times a day. I shower in the nine days–as little as possible, and I have far shorter showers than usual, and only cold-lukewarm. I simply can’t go without it, I feel far too gross.

in reply to: Help, I need a word for something. #1092201

Schadenfreude. Or close enough. It means getting enjoyment out of the suffering/discomfort/misfortune of others. It’s originally German, but it seems to be quite accepted in English

in reply to: Jewish novels #1093101

Doesn’t bother me: I don’t want any particular hashkofas, and I only said that because the only real claim I’ve heard against goyishe novels is that you “absorb” the authors worldview. I mean, if Spinoza wrote novels, I wouldn’t want to read them.
