I made aliyah. I don’t particularly enjoy figuring out hebrew. It’s bad enough my government tests are in it…

in reply to: Sems like Machon Raya? #1120281

Question, what is Machon Raya like?

in reply to: Another Sem thread. But really, please- open me anyway! #1106665

tam-tam: That’s not davka. Chedvas is like that but have girls interested in learning.

    What’s hadar?

I guess I want BY. I don’t know. I want to have internet access for the CR, writing, and stuff. I post on websites and to magazines…

in reply to: Sorry… Another Sem Thread… #1106270

I wasn’t on here till 9th grade….8th graders arent really on the CR

in reply to: Another Sem thread. But really, please- open me anyway! #1106662

Yes I’m Israeli American….which means a lot of sems won’t look twice at me unfortunately. I was looking at Tomer Devorah’s site. It looks nice but it seems a bit to modern for me. I mean, I’m not being reacist or anything, but I feel I’m frummer than the girls there- or at least the ones I saw. I have no problem have friends from all different types, but I don’t want the whole sem to be more modern for me. I’ m looking for a mix…

That’s hard to do with a full family going through supper, pj’s, and bed.

in reply to: My daughter is in Sem in Israel and I'm scared for her #1111858

It is pretty scary. I live near Jerusalem and a lot of girls in my class live there. Every time there’s an attack girls call home and make sure it’s not someone close to them. It’s seriously sad.

All we can do is daven. G-d wants us to feel helpless so we can call out to him. Imagine how scary it is for people who live here, who’s neighbors, friends, relatives, teachers, and children live here. You just have a daughter, but imagine all your kids here. It doesn’t take away from the scariness, but just imagine what it’s like for israeli’s…

in reply to: Seminary List #1101753

I’m not sure where I will be going at all. The israeli mentality is that we start looking into school around January….

Not at all like Americans that have to start sighning up now.

I have no idea what type of sem I want.

I know I won’t be paying for a flight 😉 I think we may be paying cheaper prices, but I’m not sure.

EVERY sem has their own prices and scholorships.

in reply to: Challenges of making Aliyah and how to overcome them? #1100540

I wouldn’t say you HAVE to read the hebrew newspaper, but to adapt (unless you are rich and your husband has millions of dollars and kept his job) you have got to really adapt.

You need to immerse yourself in the hebrew. From my expiricence as I mentioned above, I ended up the first year dumped into an all israeli high school…since there were no other english speaking girls my age in the entire city. I GOT IMMERSED IN IT.

But if you have only hebrew speaking neighbors, live in a hebrew speaking area-don’t push yourself too hard. conversational hebrew is much easier for most people.

I still have trouble on my bagruts after being here 3 years but some of my best friends speak hebrew, and I can’t switch to english because they don’t KNOW it.

There were times our family didn’t have electricity for a week. My parents took months finding a job and we survived on nefesh binefesh money as we had none in savings. You can only get to Israel through hardships. How far are you willing to go? If that happened to you, could you do it? If you had to move every six months since you couldn’t find a good apartment, could you do it? If you had to be a janotor instead of a CEO, could you do it???

    Be prepared.

in reply to: Challenges of making Aliyah and how to overcome them? #1100532

I SERIOUSLY I have no time to sort through this mess. I, as I have mentioned before made aliyah with my family right before high school. We went by Nefesh Binefesh, that previous people mentioned were a big help.

    There were-for the first year.

I don’t want to say any loshon hara, but l’toeles they weren’t very helpful after the first year at all. I don’t want to go into more detail, as it is loshon hara- but this is the truth and I want people making aliyah to hear our expirience a bit so they can decide for themselves.

Anothwr thing they did was push us up north. This was during their GO NORTH campaign as not many people make aliyah there and they wanted to up the population. The north is really nice but wasn’t for us. The people living up north they had put us in touch with sorta exaggerated on the “bustling community” in said city where they lived. That is not Nefesh Binefesh’s fault they exaggerated, but it put us through a lot of aggravation and in return we recieved no help from anyone moving to a place that better suited our family.

In the end though, 4 years later everything is much better. But if we hadn’t been told by all of our rabbanim to make the aliyah, and been told that we would make it better in Israel by daas torah, it would of prob. been a huge mistake.

We had older kids that made it, it is possible to make it. But every family should check if it is going to work for their kids and ask their rabbanim. Everyone is different.

in reply to: Natural Health and the Sun (Or a question for Stam) #1098961

There are always natural options for this stuff. Hashem created an amazing world with most remedies found in plants, and in other natural places. I certainly suggest you DO use sunscreen. I don’t know about you, but if I miss 2 days in the summer without sunscreen I WILL get burned.

Light skinned people should not go without, particularity redheads who are 50 percent more prone to getting many different types of skin issues.

@homer- were supposed to be like angels, no?

@joseph- crying comes from many emotions. I uss. cry, but not out of fear. Becuase I am talking with G-d, saying I’m sorry…giving him my heart and hoping the year will go well.

    @scared driver delight-translation?

So I am saying of course I am a bit frightened, I want everything to go well. BUT not deadly scared, or freaked out and nervous that I didnt daven enough, and scared to request things for the coming year…

WHAT is your take on this guys?

That’s what happens MAZAL.Don’t push yourself. Its assur to take things on during a spiritual low. Just try and let things flow and talk to G-d in your own words

in reply to: color war and midos #1098633

I see both sides. I agree with all, esspec. the life = color war. It’s so true. You may gay hurt in it or have a lot of fun. THAT’S LIFE. It’s all bout perspective. IN LIFE you may get beaten, disgraced, have your talents degraded….and you may learn how to push yourself so people can see you, not let them step on you, learn achdut, and teach others a thing or two.

I had color war in camp, and my song got completely destroyed by girls that had a higher status than me. but that’s life. And I realized in the end I don’t need everyone to know that I wrote it, and make something for everyone to see just to feel good about myself. My friends see my songs, I see them…trying to show off was ga’ava.

See, even if you get hurt you can learn something.

I think color war is awesome. Al the kids that are in to it go have a great time while I finally catch up on some sleep, sneak out with a friend, and have a blast walking around in a pink blanket cuz why not (even though I didnt do much and dithed all the presentations) I still cheered, lost my voice, went crazy, and relaxed. Everyone gets a chance to do what works for them- as long as they push for it.

Can I have a new subtitle??????

in reply to: Borrowing money from child #1086461

    It depends on the age.

Your child got or worked for the money and it is unfair to take it away. Punishing the child in this way will hurt him or her seeing as they won’t want to work for things.

Seeing as we are talking about borrowing, usually when you borrow something-you are returning it. If not it is not called borrowing, it is called taking.

How would you feel if someone just took your money and claimed they would give it back?

Children have feelings too, even if according to halacha you can take it, it will definitely not make your child’s relationship with you any better. It will not help them become a better person.

Hehe, we have that rule to. Whenever the prin walks outside, everyone jumps off the tables quickly. It’s sorta cool.

Explain very nicely that it was more comfortable on the table, and you wanted to swing your legs higher! 😉

in reply to: The real reason for the ban against chassidish women driving? #1086836

It depends where you live. If you live a half an hour drive from the nearest supermarket than yes, women drive. If you live in a bigger city I think everyone should speak to their Rav and their spuse.

If you are really interested, go find out why there is a ban from a rabbi. Not a bunch of weirdo’s online.

in reply to: Bnos Machanayim International #1085819

It sounds really good! Are you going girlygirly? I thought it was like that but the director told me a bunch of girls are coming in from Cincinnati, a large group from mexico, someone from france, another girl in belgium I think, and mostly from out of town communities. She said it’s more non NYers.

in reply to: Bnos Machanayim International #1085817

Anyone know what it’s like now? Or is anyone going?

in reply to: Jews listening to non Jewish music #1121762

In my opinion it does not matter what you consider Jewish or Non-Jewish. Everything in this world is a tool for us to go higher in ruchaniyut. Either something pushes you up or pushes you down-there is no in the middle. So obviously songs about love, boys, and kal vachomer worse things should not be listened to. But there are many songs with chizuk in it and do not involve any under linings of christianity, love, or worse. You need to judge for yourself what brings you higher. If a song does not bring you to serve your creator more than it isn’t good.

A good way to test if a song is good is to listen to it, and daven 5 minutes later mincha.

Are your thoughts pure? Can you concentrate? Do you feel it’s easier to talk to hashem?/

in reply to: Jews listening to non Jewish music #1121753

LG: If you are interested in hearing my opnion on the matter I have much to say about it. I have asked many teachers, and advised many girls on the subject.

in reply to: silly songs you learnt as a kid #1082451

    Parody of the sternerg song:

    |

I’m learning Torah can you call me back?

I see all the Jewish girls dressed in black…

Please leave your name and number at the beep of the tone

Cuz I don’t really have a celluar phone

Omg we grew up on the little rabbit song!!! I think it’s more of an country song as when I went to Sleepaway camp with in town girls no one had heard of it…

But the last line is “safely lullaby” in our version. Than there’s this whole thing with huming thr whole song with hand motions, than certqin parts….it’s an art. Anyone know where oit’s from? I don’t think it has got a Jewish origin.

We had many more songs…I will try to remember them

Does anyone know the song about the word that was able to fit inside a straw, and then you drank it? Something along those lines?

“I said a rick tick tick tick tickity tick…” Everyone must know that one! We used to include the bus driver in ours. They would always ber surprised but would play along.

“Good moring and how are you?

Have you slept, the whole night threw…

Are you ready for a brand new day?”
