The Shmuz on the ParshaParshas Vayeshev

    I Never Forget

    ??”? ?? ?????? ??? ?? ???? ??

    ????? ?????? – (?”?) ??? ??? ???? ??????? ?? ??? ????? ??? ??? ??? ????? ????? ?????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ???:

It is difficult to imagine a closer relationship than that of Yaakov Avinu and his beloved son Yosef. In Yosef, he saw wisdom, kindness and leadership; in Yosef, he saw his own life in parallel; and in Yosef he saw his wife, Rochel. He singled him out to be the leader of all the brothers. When Yosef was taken at the tender age of seventeen, Yaakov was inconsolable. He mourned this loss for years, and despite the efforts of his family to comfort him, his grief remained as intense as when he first heard the news.

    Forgetting is natural

The answer to this question can be best understood from a different perspective.

    Me after I die

The answer to why this fellow should be concerned about his nishomah is because he is the nishomah. Reb Yisroel Salanter teaches us that death is like taking off a coat. If I walk into a room and take off my outer garment, I enter the room. So too, says Reb Yisroel, when I die, my body will be buried, and I will emerge. The same I that thinks, feels and remembers. The same I that tells my arms and legs to move, will live on long after my body is buried.

    I am not my brain

Did you ever have one of those brilliant flashes of intuition? Like a lightning bolt, you just realized something. You knew it. Then you had to go through the slow, laborious process of putting that thought into words, of taking that understanding and putting it into a concrete idea.

After my body dies, I live on

If you were to use another site that I also happened to moderate, but for the other site you used a different email address, info, etc, I might be able to make the connection even though you gave different info to the different sites because you are using the same computer for both sites and therefore I am seeing the same IP address (of course I would have to be very bored or use sophisticated software to do this but it is possible). AZ, I was actually saying the exact opposite of you. You say that there are too many girls yet in the spreadsheet I posted there are more boys!

As the anonymous email I posted suggested, this is probably because girls are too embarrassed to put their names down on a tehilim list.

You, AZ, have already showed many times that there are more girls, I was just making a

    joke.

Back to the email I posted. I don’t understand why it is that she wouldn’t want to go out with a boy on a tehilim list. When it comes to shiduchim there is a chiyuv of hishtadlus which is why most of the discussions here boil down to what is considered proper hishtadlus. Everyone agrees that Hashem is the ultimate shadchan and that therefore davening is certainly part of proper hishtadlus so I don’t see why someone would be turned off by a boy who puts himself on a tehilim list. I also think that girls should not be embarrassed to put themselves on lists as well though I do see a difference between giving their names’ to a friends to daven for each other is different than putting your name on a public spreadsheet

Jothar, Dumbledore Z”L was only involved in Toeiva as a 17-year-old youth. The rest of his life he lived as a tzadik, he was very sorry about his past which is why he was afraid to confront Grindelwald until the magical community pretty much forced him to, at which point he atoned for his past by defeating Grindelwald and saving the world from that Toeiva. Dumbledore was the ultimate Ba’al T’shuva although his guilt never allowed him to marry normally and kept him from saving people earlier. Grindelwald himself also did t’shuva before being killed by Voldemort many years later.

I have heard theories that the reason Dumbledore was at the “train station” with Harry at the end of Deathly Hallows was because he was not yet allowed into Olam Habba, he was stuck in the middle as a kapara.

    Aysav comes to kill Yaakov

The word came to Yaakov that his brother Aysav was coming to greet him, accompanied by 400 men armed to the teeth. It was obvious to all that Aysav intended to kill Yaakov. The posuk tells us that Yaakov feared greatly.

This Gemara becomes difficult to understand when we take into account that after all is said and done, Yaakov Avinu was still a human. No matter how great the Avos were, they were made out of the same flesh and blood that we are, had the same physical makeup that we do, and faced all the challenges of being a human being.

HASHEM made that promise 34 years ago

    Yaakov walked with HASHEM

The answer to this question seems to be that there is a key distinction between Yaakov Avinu and the average person. Yaakov Avinu walked with HASHEM.

    Yaakov Avinu was never alone

But Yaakov Avinu was never alone. His entire existence was focused on being close to HASHEM. HASHEM was present with him every moment of his day. When he went to the well to find a wife, HASHEM was right there arranging for Rochel to come with the sheep. When he went to the house of Lavan, HASHEM was right there protecting him from the scheming of a trickster. And now that he was preparing to meet his brother in what was likely to be mortal combat, he was not going out alone. He walked with HASHEM.

    Scotch

Due to rapid changes in the scotch industry, and the cRc goal of relaying the most accurate kashrus information possible, the cRc is temporarily not listing any particular brand of scotch as being acceptable or not recommended. If you wish, in the mean time, you may determine the kosher status of a particular scotch by checking the label and packaging of each particular brand, type and vintage and ascertain that it was not produced using any possible questionable methods. Some questionable methods include scotch aged in wine casks such as sherry or port, dual casks, French casks or European casks. We hope to have this rectified soon and once again have an expansive scotch list available on our website.

Mod42, Thanks for the hesber on the frum dating sites. As far as the math goes it is very tricky, and every time I think about it, I get dizzy. What we know is that biologically there are the same number of men and women in every age bracket until retirement years.

Thank you. I get dizzy too but I once thought about it for awhile and it seemed that AZ was right with the numbers claim and how closing the age gap can alleviate the problem. There was an ad in one of the frum newspapers with a graphical representation of the way it is and the way it should be. If you study the ad for awhile you might understand. Having a brain for learning gemara helps too 🙂 Of course, if you read all these threads here people have ways of refuting the whole age gap thing but I don’t want to get into that now as it will just get both of us more dizzy.

The tricky part is that AZ’s claim is that each younger bracket is slightly bigger than the next older bracket because frum families have lots of children and this causes population growth. So in some town, in the 20-25 bracket there may be 105 men and 105 women, while in the 25-30 bracket there may be 100 men and 100 women. Now because guys like younger girls, the 100 guys in the 25-30 bracket may swoop down and take 100 girls in the 20-25 bracket, leaving 5 of these younger girls with no men. These remaining girls then get older and have less and less chance of finding guys.

It is very confusing because sof kol sof there are the same numbers of each in each bracket at any time, so it basically boils down to a preference issue, not an actual physical shortage of people.

According to your numbers, when the 20-25 year olds become 25-30 year olds there will be 105 boys (assuming that they start dating at 25 for this example so none are married yet). But, let’s say there are 110 girls in the new class of 20-25 year olds and we add in the 5 from the previous class that didn’t get married so there are now 115 girls for 105 guys, 5 of those girls are older so will probably be part of the 10 who get left out so they will just get older. With each passing generation the numbers get further apart. So in a higher age bracket, let’s say 35-40, there will not be the same number of single boys as girls. There will be more single girls than boys because of what I explained earlier and AZ has been trying to explain. So even in your goral system some girls will be left out. But as I said in my previous post, at least some will get married that wouldn’t have otherwise.

Also, wouldn’t the guys from two brackets ahead (say 30-35) swoop down and take the 5 remaining 20-25 yr old girls and claim a major prize. (Like the old joke goes, my wife just turned 50, so I traded her in for two 25 yr olds.) So I literally get dizzy every time I try to evaluate the merits of AZ’s claim.

In theory this could happen but people are picky even at an older age so the five 25-30 year old girls will not want to marry the guys from the older bracket, they will only want to go out with guys in their age bracket. And even if they did go out with the older guys it would just exacerbate the problem because in the 30-35 bracket there are already fewer boys then girls and now 5 of them will be marrying girls from the younger bracket – exactly the problem that NASI is trying to solve by having people date within their bracket.

But my goral system would theoretically be immune from this since there must be the same numbers of singles. The only thing it could not do is to create guys in the 20-25 year old bracket because they may not be going out, and they would not enter. This may create an imbalance in the total number of available singles.

As I said above, no there will not be the same number even within the bracket becasue of what happened in the previous years. Your imbalance by guys not going out until they are older is exactly the problem NASI is trying to solve.

One thing to keep in mind is that by the non-Jews, it seems they are always having trouble getting women to attend singles events, so they always host ladies nite at bars and ballgames where they go for free to get them to show up. Non-jews also like younger women, so that is a bit of a kashya on AZ.

Non-Jews don’t have as many children as Jews so there is less of an imbalance between the older and younger generation. Also, non-Jews don’y necessarily date for marriage. When they finally do settle down and marry many times it is with someone closer in age (I am guessing here)

Another thing to find out would be how many of each gender show up at the usual frum single’s shabbatons and get-togethers. That ought to be representative of the number of available men, as well. I don’t think they are swamped with women only, but I could be wrong.

I think that these events are usually planned to have the same number of boys and girls. I guess it depends on the event but many will require reservations and they will only take X number of boys and S number of girls. I don’t know the mitzius with these events so, like you, I might be totally wrong.

It seems from the story of the Queen mentioned earlier that a complete goral would not work. It would probably be considered a lack of proper hishtadlus. What might work is to put info about everyone into a computer program and have the computer make the matches. This has obviously been tried in many different ways by sites such as Sawyouatsinai and Frumster and other sites in the goyish world.

Just to explain briefly how each of the above 2 sites work. In each, the singles fill out a profile. In Frumster the singles themselves can then search by criteria and the site will give them profiles to review after which they can contact whoever they want. With Sawyouatsinai the singles themselves cannot search, rather a professional shadchan searches and then suggests matches. In each case, it is sort of an educated goral. Whereas a regular goral is completely random, here there is some rhyme and reason as to why someone is being suggested.

If you want to use PY’s idea but put some hishtadlus into it, perhaps you can have every older single be put into a computer and have the computer make a suggestion based on a bunch of criteria. Instead of having the couple then go out and decide, have them commit to marry whoever is picked for them. I doubt too many people would go for this though, but it is certainly better than PY’s completely random goral. Perhaps we can even add a little more human intervention by having the computer make 10 suggestions and then have each boy meet with a professional shadchan and then have that shadchan meet the 10 girls suggested by the computer and then the shadchan decides who to set him up with. This is very similar to how Sawyouatsinai works except that in our case, the couple would commit to marry whoever is picked for them.

I don’t think too many people would agree to this idea either but it’s certainly better than the original goral idea.

(btw, where is Kapusta, she was mentioned earlier in this thread in two different contexts, cabbage and queen)

AZ, I think you are missing PY’s point. He believes that there will be the same number of boys and girls in a given age bracket. So if there are 100 boys in the 30-35 age bracket, there will also be 100 girls. According to you, there would be more girls so let’s say, 200. The way things go right now, people are picky, etc and out of the 100 boys and 200 girls, 5 years later 50 boys will be married to 50 girls and there are still 50 and 150 left, or there might be more than 150 girls left if some of the boys marry girls less than 30. With PY’s plan, the 100 boys will all find shidduchim in their age bracket so there will be 100 girls left instead of 150+. (Note, I am not saying it is a good idea, just explaining why PY thinks it would be work, even in AZ’s world)

After I picked up the item and “marked it as paid” the seller tried to cancel the transaction, I assume for this reason so he wouldn’t have to pay the fee. I responded to him that the transaction was done, deal closed and he didn’t take it any further. I guess he realized that I was bening honest and wouldn’t give in to his tricks and he probably wanted me to do business with him in the future as this wasn’t the first time I had bought from him.

    Junk Science

A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the

Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was

attempting to show how conditioned we have become to

alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of

everything in our environment. In his project he urged

people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total

elimination of the chemical “dihydrogen monoxide.”

And for plenty of good reasons, since:

    1. it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting

    2. it is a major component in acid rain

    3. it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state

    4. accidental inhalation can kill you

    5. it contributes to erosion

    6. it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes

    7. it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients

He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.

Forty-three (43) said yes, six (6) were undecided, and only

one (1) knew that the chemical was water.

The title of his prize winning project was, “How Gullible

    Are We?”

He feels the conclusion is obvious.

I think that skila is the most “public” type of misa give by beis din and that one of the reasons for it is “v’kol yisrael yishmi’u v’yira’u”. I don’t have time now to check if the Torah ever uses that lashon by any misa other than skila. The fact that people don’t duchen at Mussaf on Simchas Torah is a din in not duchening at the time of Mincha because it is the time of day when people normally drink. This is a din every day of the year, not just on Simchas Torah. At the Netz minyan that I davened at, they actually did Birchas Kohanim at Mussaf because it was still well before mincha gedola and there had not been a kiddush yet. Most other minyanim don’t get to mussaf until after mincha gedola so tehreforee cannot duchen then. This is in no way a ra’aya that there is a mitzvah/minhag to drink on Simchas Torah more than any other Yom Tov. It is merely the fact that kiddush is made on wine as on any othe rShabbos or Yom TOv and therefore a kohain may not be fit to duchen at that time

I personally think that “buzzed” men should not be dancing with the Torah at all, it is not respectful in my opinion. Simchas Torah is not Purim, people should learn to be able to celebrate without the need for alcohol. You should be feeling the simcha of the Torah, not a chemical simcha caused by alcohol.

sunflower, kapusta is Russian for cabbage as has been mentioned many times here in the CR. I actually had some kapusta over Yom Tov, yum!

I have heard stories where the Ba’al Koreh or Chazzan got a Hatzalah call

You don’t have to actually click the link and copy from the navigation bar. You can right-click the link and choose to “copy link location” in Firefox, I forgot what the choice is in IE but it’s something similar, perhaps “copy target” or something.
