When discussing Life in America, you must seperate NYC area and OOT (Out of Town) Things that might occur in NYC area do not occur elsewhere, People are more tribal and territorial in NYC area than they are out of town, where differnt groups of people are more willing to work together in a common goal
zahavasdadParticipantJust an FYI, Israel does not stamp passports anymore, they give you a card that you need to return when you leave the country.
The way countries like Lebanon know you were in Israel is if you have a visa stamp at border crossings between either Jordan and Israel or Egypt and Israel.
If you want to go to Lebanon, you cant bring Tfillin or anything with hebrew writing and you need another passport (The US and EU countries will give you a second passport for this purpose)
zahavasdadParticipantI havent been there, but Ive heard others who have
As long as you are not travelling on an Israeli Passport or were born on Irael, they dont care. Even if you were in Israel, they dont care
zahavasdadParticipantJoseph why not take a drive to Lakewood and ask Rav Neuman why his wife drives? After all she is disobeying the Shulchan Aruch
August 3, 2016 6:40 pm at 6:40 pm in reply to: how to tell if your teacher in a not jewish college is anti semitic? #1169761zahavasdadParticipantIf a professor constantly mentions jewish landlords, Jewish Bankers and Hollywood and killers of the Savior, then I would worry
August 3, 2016 4:35 pm at 4:35 pm in reply to: how to tell if your teacher in a not jewish college is anti semitic? #1169759zahavasdadParticipantA professor might be anti-relgious or Pro-Palesnian, but that doesnt nessasarily make them an Anti-Semite. Someone Anti-religous might also be against the Church (and ALL religions) and someone Pro-Palestinian might also support other similar groups like western Sahara or the Tibetians.
zahavasdadParticipantThe murder of Shira Bakari was the reason this parade got so much press
Last year only about 5,000 people showed up and it probably would have been forgotten. However the murder caused 25,000 people to show up (More probably would have if security wasnt so tight)
For every person yelling Toeivah, 3 or 4 or more were yelling Lo Tirtzach back at them
zahavasdadParticipantAt $100 per hour, 2 hours per day, that is $1000 per week, $4000 per month or $108,000 a year
Most people cannot afford that, Even Ramaz is cheaper than that
August 2, 2016 10:52 pm at 10:52 pm in reply to: What do the gedolim say about the final war #1161394zahavasdadParticipantC’L = Chutz L’Aretz
zahavasdadParticipantI didnt say I recommended it, I just said people are doing it.
I suspect if the tutiton crisis is not solved, more people will do it as they cannot afford the tutition
zahavasdadParticipantIf you wanted to save money you would send your kid to Public School and hire a tutor Limudei Kodesh. I think some people are already doing that as they cannot afford the sky high yeshiva tutitions
zahavasdadParticipantUnfortuantly Syag, There is the laws of Supply and Demand
There are much more Rebbes avaialble than High Level Physics or mathematics tutors so the price is lower
zahavasdadParticipantI wish I admired someone so much that I could stalk them
August 2, 2016 5:00 pm at 5:00 pm in reply to: Why the ashkenazi schools don't accept sefardi children #1164110zahavasdadParticipantJews from Syria, Iraq, iran etc are not really Sephardim, they are Eduth HaMizrach even though for the most part they follow Sephardic customs.
Sepharad means Spain and true Sephardic jews are decended from the jews of Spain
August 2, 2016 4:53 pm at 4:53 pm in reply to: Why the ashkenazi schools don't accept sefardi children #1164109zahavasdadParticipantOne way you know you have really made it, that no matter what you post on, in hundreds of comments, that someone values your comments so much that they stalk you and only comment on what you say.
I truly feel priviledged that someone values my comments so much that they stalk my every comment, Its nice to be appreciated and admired Even from a FORBIDDEN person
zahavasdadParticipantAccording to Josephs Hashkafa, Since Rebbitzen Neuman drives, She is OO as well
zahavasdadParticipantShopping613
although I would support Shira as she died before she was given a chance to do teshuvah.
Shira Baraki was not a member of an “Alternative Lifestyle” , She just support their cause. Going to a parade is not an averiah needing Tshuva
zahavasdadParticipantand what is wrong if it would be? Is that to say that you believe them to be fanatics? For the record, Chelm was a chasidishe town, I am referring to Kelm
I think the comparison of Brooklyn vs Chelm went over your head.
Chelm is well known in jewish folkore
August 2, 2016 10:50 am at 10:50 am in reply to: Why the ashkenazi schools don't accept sefardi children #1164098zahavasdadParticipantROC
as a matter of fact, the chazon ish had many reasons for allowing the speaking of ivrit (all the modernishe will say ‘whats the shailoh??’), but chief among them was that if we all speak yiddish, we will lose the sefardim, who at that time had no infrastructure
Sephardim have their own version of “Yiddish” Its called Ladino
zahavasdadParticipantIn NY is more difficult to Home school as there are requirements to be a home school teacher, In other states not so much like in Texas the government cannot regulate home schooling
$80-$100 is way to high for a tutor, I think the going rate is $25 or less
zahavasdadParticipantJoseph is such a Tzadick, He is more frum than Rav Neuman. He even knows Shulchan Aruch better than he does
zahavasdadParticipantIf there is a war, It would be permitted to go to anywhere that is safe
It was certainly muttar to go to Siberia going WW II
zahavasdadParticipantC’L is a big Place , much bigger than EY.
While its true war could occur anywhere if Hashem wills it. I would think it would be unlikely to affect Antarctica
zahavasdadParticipantBrookyln is not Chelm
Even though many times it seems like it
zahavasdadParticipantActually Joseph I HAVE seen Rebbetzen Neuman drive.
I saw Rav neuman get into the passenger seat and she got into the driver seat and drove him away
I have also seen one of their daughters drive as well
zahavasdadParticipantWomen in LAKEWOOD Drive and I dont mean the Modern ones, I mean the wives of the Rosh Yeshivas and Kollel Averchim.
I doubt they would disobey Rav kanivesky
July 31, 2016 3:38 am at 3:38 am in reply to: Does a reform rabbi do anything other than attend funerals? #1161028zahavasdadParticipantIt seems the Chaplin at Massachussetts general and The Cleveland Clinic, both in areas with frum populations and top hospitals in the US have hired someone named Shulamit Izen as their chaplin
July 31, 2016 3:30 am at 3:30 am in reply to: Does a reform rabbi do anything other than attend funerals? #1161027zahavasdadParticipantThe Jewish Chaplin at the Mayo Clinic in Rochhester, MN is David Freedman of B’nai Israel Synagogue, a Reform Congregation
The Mayo Clinic is one of the most famous hospitals in the US and not located in an area with alot of jews. Not in NY, Baltimore , Miami area or Los Angeles
zahavasdadParticipantIf you see an old lady walking and she is walking with difficulty and you are alone (and a male)
Only a Chassid Shoteh would not give her a ride (assuming you know her, I understand not giving a stranger a ride, I would not give a stranger a ride)
July 29, 2016 10:25 pm at 10:25 pm in reply to: Does a reform rabbi do anything other than attend funerals? #1161025zahavasdadParticipantBelive it or not jews live outside of NY. Hospitals and nursing homes in those places take who is available and even in NY. Places like Suffolk County, Dutchess county getting an orthodox Rabbi might be difficult , so they take who is available.
Also must frum jews will not go into the Army, (Some Chabad I think will) so they appoint as chaplin the people who enlist who have “Rabbanical Ordination”
July 29, 2016 2:01 pm at 2:01 pm in reply to: Does a reform rabbi do anything other than attend funerals? #1161009zahavasdadParticipantmany if not most chaplins in hospitals and nursing homes are reform clergy-people
zahavasdadParticipantThere is also the issue of shaking a womens hand
SHould the male president really not shake the hand of Angela Merkal (Germany) or Theresa May (UK)?
zahavasdadParticipantThat may be true, but if the president were observant vis-a-vis Kashrus (and it were publicly known), they would be sure to serve him only Kosher food. I’m sure that the President doesn’t serve pork to Saudi officials when they dine at official dinners.
For Muslims, no pork, wouldnt be an issue, however for Asians, Pork is very much a staple in their diet.
zahavasdadParticipantFood would be a problem for a frum president as in many cultures you are expected to eat the food they give you or its considered an insult.
As part of the presidents job, he needs to go around meeting foreign leaders and has to eat with them. Even when the world leader comes to the US, the white house chefs usually try to prepare foods the leader likes.
But Sorry Chulent would not really cut it there,
zahavasdadParticipantThere is a well known anti-kiruv organization that basically had people going from charedi to secular. However many charedim didnt really want to go secular, they just didnt want to be charedi, but wanted to remain frum.
A frum MO woman started an organization they helped charedim who wanted to leave the charedi (Mostly chassidish) lifestyle and become more westernized, but still remain frum.
July 29, 2016 1:25 am at 1:25 am in reply to: Does a reform rabbi do anything other than attend funerals? #1161005zahavasdadParticipantAs a side note, if someone gets married to someone of the same gender and then decides they want to marry someone of a differnt gender, they need to get divorced from the first party . even though halacha does recognize the first marriage, the state does and if you marry someone of a different gender without a divorce its bigamy
July 29, 2016 1:18 am at 1:18 am in reply to: Does a reform rabbi do anything other than attend funerals? #1161004zahavasdadParticipantBut I don’t care if a state recognizes a marriage.
Actually, you should care, for the simple reason , lets say a couple is married reform civilly and then one of the partners becomes a BT and decides to marry someone else orthodox, but never civilly divorced the first person (They never had a Ketubah)
According to the laws of the US, only the first marriage is valid, and the second marriage is Bigamy and not valid
zahavasdadParticipantThere is a difference between condoning something and not condemning especially when condemnation would be taken differently
you can say nothing and not be condoning the parade, pretend it never happend
July 28, 2016 6:25 pm at 6:25 pm in reply to: Does a reform rabbi do anything other than attend funerals? #1160987zahavasdadParticipantMany reform rabbis attend the temple once a week and lead services, (the ones with a pulpit anyway)
Some then get involved in life events Briths, Marriages and deaths
many get involved in pastoral counseling (Like when someone has a crisis and is looking for God for help)
I am sure there are other things as well
zahavasdadParticipantusually pride parade are made with the idea, that people who are like that have a lower self esteem and the parade is to raise that esteem.
However the past Jerusalem parade became some sort of connection to a murder and people were protesting a murder as well, who murdered someone in the name of hate
zahavasdadParticipanttrotsky was not the head of the Soviet Union
However Lenin had a jewish grandfather
zahavasdadParticipantThere are only about 14-16 millions jews in the world
It in impossible for FB, twitter, Pokemon or anything else to cause MILLIONS of intermarriages and divorces and people going OTD
zahavasdadParticipantSparkly
Yeshivas and Seminiaries do not teach you this, however prostelizing is not really acceptable in the greater world and can get you into trouble if done incorrectly.
College Campuses and even more so work place environments, you have to be real careful what you say and do. You can be punished for prostelizing. A simple example. You are in an office with a co-worker who is not religous and you hear them over the phone discussing their friday night plans which includes going to McDonalds and Having a cheeseburger and then driving elsewhere. You are not allowed to say anything.
On a college campus you might see a table for Zen Budaism and someone you know is going over for that table. you cannot stand near that table and block people from going to the Buddiast table with the statue of the Buddah. The dean can reprimand or expel you for doing so.
Groups that do kiruv on college campuses and workplace environments know how to maze through these things (Regardless of what might have been heard, Hillels, Chabads etc are welcome on college campuses, just as long as they follow the rules..which isnt as hard as you think)
zahavasdadParticipantIve repeated this before
MO is a broader spectrum that charedism, Basically people who are charedi do not differ much in relgious observance from each other. and if you veer from that, you either leave, or are kicked out.
MO is alot more of a broader range of relgious observance, They use Shabbos and Kashruth as the baseline. If you keep those 2 things, they consider you orthodox and from there the observance varies from women who wear pants and do not cover their hair to people who basically are charedi, but might wear a kippah seruga during the week and wear more western dress
zahavasdadParticipantThe restuarnt is under Chabad
zahavasdadParticipantAny idea of how to do kiruv in a college setting. Its kind of weird to just walk up to someone and be like i want you to come to my house or wherever and that way youll get a chance to do kiruv on them.
You dont walk up to people on a college setting, you have to run events that people would want to go to. It has to be some combination of Judaism and social setting
zahavasdadParticipantIts a sad fact that if you want to daven with a Minyan (Especially 3 times a day..Shabbos might be easier) or eat at restaurants (as opposed to bringing your own food) there are very few places to go
zahavasdadParticipantJONAH was found to be illegal and is now defunct
zahavasdadParticipantJoe Liberman is not frum, he is Observant .
He used to eat Fish in non-kosher restaurants and he did vote on things on Shabbos (He used to walk to the Senate)
zahavasdadParticipantThe Jerusalem parade was not the same as the Tel Aviv one or the one in NYC.
