You also learned Hebrew or Yiddish at an early age, So while English was your first language, you learned the gutterals at an early age

I have no problem saying those sounds either, but try to get someone who does not speak those languages or learned them at a much later point in life to pronounce them

The Ches sound, not a Ches. The CH is a gutteral and english speakers cannot pronounce it

English Speakers pronounce Chaim like the CH in Chair

They might also pronouce it like Haim like the H in House

Most of the Bused students in NYC are bused via private busing. Read the side of the bus

Elementary Students will get busing if they live a certain distance from the school, High school students for the most part do NOT get busing

Busing isnt an issue in NYC because almost nobody gets it.

Also NYC is not as concerened about jewish special Ed as parents on the upper east and Upper West side of Manhattan who hire High priced lawyers and get the city to pay $75,000 or more private school tutions. They use alot of their resources to fight those people as they cost the city alot of money

This is an old thread, but some people cannot make certain pronuncians

English speakers cannot pronounce gutteral sounds and therefore cannot properly say the word Baruch since they cannot say the “Ches” sound correctly

NYC spends less per child (Regular children) than almost any other district in the state

NYC spends about $7500 per child (non special ed) , Most NYC special Ed children are educated in the NYC public schools so they can merge those costs in and still pay less money than other districts in the state.

The amount of frum parents who seek re-imbursement is lower than outside the city as Bloomberg started to fight the cases and regardless of his statements, He has acted differnetly DiBlasio has maintained that policy so you have to fight hard against a school district that is opposed to jewish education in a secular school board (Unlike say East Ramapo)

NYC has a property tax too, the differnce is NYC has a larger tax base than Lakewood or Monsey. There is not as much commercial real estate and businesses in Monsey or Lakewood like there is in NYC

You cannot compare the 2. NYC is the largest school district in the country and can handle the special ed. Lakewood is much smaller and therefore its alarger percentage of the budget

you have to balance between at what point more laws become useless

Take the speed limit for example

Every time you lower the speed limit, more people will break it, When you hit the speed limit a 1 MPH everyone will break the law of course if you increase the limit at some point it because unsafe, yes you have less lawbreakers but the danger is more.

It is not legal to get married in NY at age 14, There were a few states that you could get married at 15, but other states made that also illegal.

16 is the lowest in the US without any consequences

Marrying today at 13 is illegal and can get you in alot of trouble including labeling you an “offender” and you have to register with the authorities . It will limit the places you can live among other consequences

I think it’s also worth noting that a great deal of the money which you see as “wasted” is actually going back to the community

Many people actually have parnassah from this waste. The caterer , the printer . The Hall that is rented (If its a Jewish place) so its not “Waste”

Most organizations have paid staff that arent directly related to the organzation, Like a Yeshivas has office workers, clerical workers and some have R’L “FUND RAISERS” people whose jobs it is to raise funds

Do you think if you go to a dinner 100% of the money go to the organization. They have to pay for the food, room rental, The Journal etc

The more you need to collect, the harder it gets and the more expensive it is.

Raising $10 isnt that difficult and raising $100 isnt that difficult, but raising $10,000 is harder you need time and maybe money to do so.

I do have problems with the charity we are discussing here for various reasons not for this discussion, but they raised $34 Million. That is quite hard to do, You need to pay to get this.

Is anyone going to seriously poskin that if you give money to a yeshiva, you only get tzedkah credit if the money goes to learning, but you dont get credit if the money is used to pay the secretary who answers the phone or the desks in the offices

Interesting how Americans ‘run for office’, while in England one ‘stands for election’.

In Britain you have a football match, and we have a soccer game

And we put our car in the PARKING LOT not in the CAR PARK

and use an ELEVATOR to go up a building and not use the LIFT

And you clean yourself after eating with a NAPKIN and not a SERVIER (I think thats how its spelled)

Coke doesnt say “Non-Dairy”. The words “Non-Dairy” are the tipoff that it might be Halachically Dairy. They do not write Non Dairy on the package unless they think the public might think it was dairy. I dont need an O-UD to tell me that Milk is Dairy. if someone wrote on Milk “Non-Dairy” then I would think twice

If I am looking for real non-dairy items, I look for Pareve on the package, not Non-Dairy. I sort of know that when something say Non-Dairy its very well might be dairy according to halacha (But not american law) but if it says PAREVE then it really is non-dairy

The same people who are complaining about the “Non-Daily” and the O-U D on the package probably wouldnt be eating those products anyway since it is not Chalav Yisroel.

I dont know anything about the Eidah Charedi chickens story nor do I know what the issue is, I am responding to the Tzaar Baeli Chaim issue. With the demand for Kosher meat at an all time high, Its not possible to meet the demand easily. It used to be you ate chicken or beef at MOST once a week on Shabbos (And for many even that was alot) now we eat meat almost every day and in amounts unheard of in previous generations

150 years ago if you shected a animal and had a shala about the lungs almost any Rav could answer it. Most could answer Kashrut questions as well

Today most cannot answer Shaalas about Kashruth (I am not talking about the kind if you accidently mixed meat and milk or other common mishaps that could happen in your house, but more from the food making end before it reaches your table) People who are throwing darts have no idea what goes on before the food even reaches the store and most Rabbanim dont either, Many are even industrial secrets. The OU is one of the few places that are experts in this field. They are one of the few that has access to the industrial factories and really knows what going on.

My Posek says this is a serious issue!!!

Just because your posek says its a problem for you, doesnt mean its a problem for everyone. Other posekim hold differntly

You poseks opinion only applies to you and anyone else who follows him

I am fairly confident that Rav Schecter knows the Halacha too

What you dont know is how much more funds fundraising brought in. Say you spent $1 for fundraising, but got $5 in return, thats a good deal. Fundraising is not so easy and you really have to spend money to get money.

Its not what I personally think, Its the reality of today

Would anyone have ever heard of Kars-4-Kids if they didnt spend so much on advertising?

And you also need liability insurance, A simple example Hatzolah is on a call and accidently hits another car unrelated to the call. They are liable for the damage to the car unrelated to the call

You cant run a Charity giving 100% of the funds to the tzdekah. You need to have things like office space, Phones, Electric bills, Office supplies and frankly volunteers can be hard to come by so you need workers that you have to pay

DY, I agree. I guess I was trying not to overstate it but , yes, it was very bad. It was why the Gedolim , who were initially opposed, realized it had to be done and gave their approval to Bais Yaacov

Im not sure when exactly but sometime in the 1800’s school became mandatory for both boys and girls. As boys went to Cheder, this usually satisfied the mandatory educational requirement. There was no equivelant for girls so they had to go to public school, thats why Beis Yaakov was formed

If an End brand is Hemish, but uses O-U ingridents , really what is the difference?

So so cookies use O-U Flour, Ou Sugar, OU-Spinkles but has a Hemish hashghcha on the package, Its STILL based on the O-U. You cant put a hemish hashghcha on pork

And this people, is why our Rav says we cannot eat OU.

Without the OU , Kashruth would be almost impossible unless you owned a farm , grew your own food and raised your own animals and never bought store food

Most ingrediants in hemish products rely on the O-U (and the other major organizations) because they cannot possibly do the hashghcha themselves, they are not big enough

And, speaking of Greek, it was Greeks who put the chapter and verse numbers into the Pentateuch (“penta” is Greek for “five”). Does anyone know when, how and why the Jews accepted the Greek numbering system for a Jewish holy text (not that there is anything wrong with it)

It wasnt the Greeks, It was the christians and jews adopted this custom during the Middle Ages when jews were forced to debate christians (usually conversos) about verses in the Bible related to the man on the stick and they would quote chapter and verse with their proof. The Rabbis of the time needs to refute these “proofs” and had to respond with their own chapter and verse.
