Trademarks also have similar fair uses. You need a Patent / Copyright attorney to decide if the O-U can stop it or not. This very well not be a kashruth issue as much as a copyright / trademark issue . You can sometimes use trademarks without permission as long as you cite the trademark
zahavasdadParticipantThere is something called the fair use doctrine meaning you are allowed certain leeay in using a trademarked item and the owner of the trademark cant really stop you
March 1, 2016 2:00 am at 2:00 am in reply to: which is frummest? football, baseball, basketball or hockey? #1139561zahavasdadParticipantBaseball. 1)clothing is tzniusdig 2) good exercise 3) not intrinsically dangerous like football or hockey. Kiddush Hashem was made by one of the most famous players, Sandy Koufax, who refused to play on Yom Kippur (I think).
Sandy Koufax did refuse to play on Yom Kippur
Alan “Shlomo” Veingrad was a NFL player who became a chabadnick after his career
zahavasdadParticipantBeause the OU is a national well known organization this was found out fairly quickly. Smaller hechshem if something similar happend, it could have fallen under the radar
zahavasdadParticipantIn a parlimentary system the Prime Minister IS the head of state
Netanyahu, Amgela Merkal, Justin Treadu (Canada) and David Cameron are all prime ministers and are representative of their respective countries on the world scene, Many of these countries also have a president, but they are more a figure head than actual power

zahavasdadParticipantPringles arent potato chips, they are potato “CRISPS” . Regular potato chips are sliced potatos boiled in oil. Pringles are different, they are potatoes that are smashed into a paste and formed into that shape and then cooked
Notice regular chips are all sorts of shapes and sizes and pringles are always perfect
zahavasdadParticipantThis is an ask your Local orthodox Rabbi question
zahavasdadParticipantI guess anything is possible but he would know the name Chofetz Chaim and almost nothing else about Yiddishkeit? Never had any curiosity about his family?
There is a very well known actress who is not Halachically jewish who is a decendent of the taz and speaks about it sometimes. However she doesnt seem too interested in being like her ancestor
February 26, 2016 1:04 pm at 1:04 pm in reply to: Parenting advice for your fellow Jewish father #1138839zahavasdadParticipantMaybe suggest that he volunteers for the army for a shorter period of time, that way he can get a sense of what army life really is without making a committment.
zahavasdadParticipantThe Chofetz Chaim was still alive 85 years ago. I didn’t know any of his children were so not frum that this great/great/grandchild would have almost no Jewish knowledge.
I heard a story that 2 grandchildren of the chofetz Chaim met sometime after the war one was male and the other female. it seems the female went off the derech and the male asked the female to relate a story of their grandfather. The woman said, I asked Zaide why he insists on living such a backward lifestyle and doesnt become modern and I forget what he said, but it was something about what modern life brings that is negative
The reason I mention this is because it is very possible the Chofetz Chaim has non-relgious decendents. I also heard he had a non-religous son

Halacha is a very meaningful way

I think it depends on the Posek, Rav Moshe I think tried to use this line of thinking to prevent Mamzer, but I think Rav Elyshiv felt differently
February 25, 2016 2:08 pm at 2:08 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139617zahavasdadParticipantIt is also proof the the majority of Americans (and US presidents) are of either British or German Decent. There are likely more jews living in Great Britain today than any other time in history. Jews never really lived there and were expelled in 1190 and never officially let back in (Slowly the laws were changed to allow them, but it wasnt one event)
In Germany which wasnt a country until 1870 jews never really were a large part of the population and they did not really assimilate until the mid 19th century by which time most of the german immigration to the US already occured
February 25, 2016 1:05 pm at 1:05 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139611zahavasdadParticipantMy rosh yeshiva has said this yes that a large percent of these places are really Jewish. They are hidden Jews, so dont go crazy for Jewish candidates- there is a good shot we have already had a Jewish president and dont even know it.
There are geneologists who research these things and researching presidential candiates is always done. They found for example that Obama and Mitt Romney for example were 7th or 8th cousins. So there is definatly proof that there hasnt been a jewish president
I always hear people say, oh you know how many great Jews there are- like Einstein, Freud……Bernie Sanders. Who cares.
Jews like Einstein , freud, Salk, Sabin had great contributions to society and in some cases like Salk and Sabin saved millions of lives quantifiable. So if you dont care, then you dont care about Pikuach Nefesh. Einstein also likely saved lives too but its not as quantifiable as Salk/Sabin
February 24, 2016 6:29 pm at 6:29 pm in reply to: If Bernie Sanders is Jewish, I'm a Christmas Tree #1139564zahavasdadParticipantIf his mother is jewish and it appears she was by her name Dorothy Glassburg , then he is Jewish. Nothing else matters. that is the Halacha.
zahavasdadParticipantThere are plenty of cases where the man needs to get up for the kids (Ie the wife is sick, The Wife is out of town or For some reason there is no wife around like a widower or a divorcee)
zahavasdadParticipantQueen Elizabeth the II is really a figurehead, but Angela Merkel of Germany is one of the most powerful leaders on earth
zahavasdadParticipantMaybe there isn’t any explicit halachah, minhag, or mussar.
Maybe it does have to do something with being refined.
Maybe even though you want to deal with it, Hashem might have some expectations of a particular community or individual as well.
You can use this excuse to enact almost any rule.
zahavasdadParticipantFrance was a world super Power when Leon Blum was prime minster. And Great Britain was also a world super power (maybe the worlds most powerful nation) when he was prime minister
February 23, 2016 8:51 pm at 8:51 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157266zahavasdadParticipantThere are always issues related to the entire community that some consensus can be reached. You dont think most of the community tried to get together after Hurricane Sandy which hit the area severly. You dont think they try to do things related to Hatzollah. You dont think they can help with Tzedakah issues (Ie someone needs tzedkah from a poorer section, goes to his rav, who goes to a rav from the more well off section and is able to get the Tzedakah). There is Kulanu which serves everyone and there are other things as well
February 23, 2016 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157262zahavasdadParticipantNot all vaads are just kashruths. Some deal with communal issues as well. Kashruths are just the most public of them
zahavasdadParticipantThere have been jews who have been heads of State
Leon Blum was Prime Minster of France
Benjamin Disraeli Prime minister of Great Britain was converted to christianity as a child, but always brought up his jewish roots
zahavasdadParticipantHaving Yiras Shamayim doesnt mean someone is moral. Millions of jews have been killed in the name of the dead man on the stick.

Lakewood has open land which the 5 towns area does not. You could not have new developements there like you do in Lakewood, there is no free land (Except wetlands which are environmentally protected and in flood zones)

The Torah doesnt say jailtime for murderers either, should we let them go since there is no torah punishment for jail and capital punishment is not usually an option
February 22, 2016 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157244zahavasdadParticipantShor Yshuv is on the Far Rockaway side of the Nassau Expressway which makes it confusing and I think NYC abuts the property (The houses behind it are in Queens..According to google maps). Unless you are a survyer it would be hard to know the boundaries between nassau and queens
February 22, 2016 4:26 pm at 4:26 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157240zahavasdadParticipantUnless you are familiar with the area, you might not realize that the boundary between Nassau County and NYC is just an artificial boundary, there is no real seperation .I am not even sure that the nassau Expressway is the border. You basically walk across the street and you are in nassau or NYC
February 22, 2016 4:19 pm at 4:19 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157239zahavasdadParticipantThe Kollels are in Far Rockaway. I think even Shor yshuv which is quite large is in Far Rockaway.
For some reason, most if not all the Kollels are in the NYC part and not the Nassau County part

the 5 towns really isnt a place, It really includes Far Rockaway which is quite charedi, however Far Rockaway is part of NYC and Lawrence is not (Its in Nassau County)
the taxing districts are different between Far Rockaway and the 5 Towns and the school disctricts are completely different as Far Rockaway is NYC schools and Lawrence is Lawrence schools

Lakewood & Monsey vs the 5 towns gets differnt crowds. The 5 towns tends to get more modern people , Lakewood tends to get more yeshivish people and money more chassidish people. Unless you know people in those circles you would not know people who are moving to those places
February 22, 2016 12:36 pm at 12:36 pm in reply to: How about being machmir on ben adam l'chaveiro? #1140187zahavasdadParticipantJoseph,
A child is being abused often and you have seen it more than once. You are asked to testify against the abuser and when you do the child will stop being abused and be safe. If you do not testify the abuser will not stop what they are doing.
Which do you choose, Stopping that child from being abused and lose your Olam Habah and testify or do you not testify, the child will continue to get abused and you will maintain your olam habah for not testifying

They are no longer in business
February 21, 2016 12:09 pm at 12:09 pm in reply to: How about being machmir on ben adam l'chaveiro? #1140170zahavasdadParticipantOne doesnt have to be an auditor to know these things. People who work at a job for a while are not stupid or naive, they know whats going on. Sometimes even the people who are getting paid off the books even brag about it.
February 19, 2016 9:51 pm at 9:51 pm in reply to: School Board Monitors in Lakewood & East Ramapo #1157226zahavasdadParticipantLC
In the 5 towns, the people have more money and belived more in civic responsibility to the public school system. So they agreed to pay the money needed. That is why there was no issue there
February 19, 2016 9:18 pm at 9:18 pm in reply to: How about being machmir on ben adam l'chaveiro? #1140165zahavasdadParticipantI pay all my taxes. I saw it happen with other people
February 19, 2016 7:42 pm at 7:42 pm in reply to: How about being machmir on ben adam l'chaveiro? #1140159zahavasdadParticipantComparing a Rav who assurs a TV vs a “Rav” who lets an abuser go free is nonsense. A ‘Rav” who does not have an abuser be reported is no differnt than a “Rav” who allows ham to be eaten at the December 25th “Seduah”
February 19, 2016 6:54 pm at 6:54 pm in reply to: How about being machmir on ben adam l'chaveiro? #1140155zahavasdadParticipantIf I got a “Psak” not to go to the authorities when my kid was abused. Id get another Rav

Unfortunalty people paying off the books is well known in certain areas. Maybe not people you know or where you live, but it is a problem in NYC area. Everyone knows about it. Its no secret. I even used to work for people who used to pay partially off the books so its not even hearsay, I saw it with my own eyes
February 19, 2016 6:27 pm at 6:27 pm in reply to: How about being machmir on ben adam l'chaveiro? #1140147zahavasdadParticipantJoseph
After the fact, the abuse already happend and now you want to go to the police about the abuser and your rav paskens . Its Moser. and not to report. Do you listen to your rav or do you go anyway?
February 19, 2016 6:01 pm at 6:01 pm in reply to: How about being machmir on ben adam l'chaveiro? #1140144zahavasdadParticipant” Absolutely, correct. If my Rav said not to, I would not. I would do what my Rav said to do. ”
What if it was your kid? Would you still listen to your “Rav”
February 19, 2016 5:15 pm at 5:15 pm in reply to: How about being machmir on ben adam l'chaveiro? #1140138zahavasdadParticipant1. I do not permit my children to bring their toys into a store if the store may carry similar merchandise.
2. If I don’t get a carry-out bag from the store, I hold the receipt in my hand when I walk out.
3. I try to be as careful as possible regarding complementary items; e.g., taking only the amount of ketchup packets I need for the food I just bought, offering to pay a quarter if I ask for an empty disposable cup, etc.
People are not concerned about such minor matters. They are refering to such practices are “Paying off the books” or not charging sales tax for example
February 19, 2016 5:05 pm at 5:05 pm in reply to: How about being machmir on ben adam l'chaveiro? #1140137zahavasdadParticipantJoseph
So if you saw someone inapproprately touching someone you would not report them to the authorities if your ‘Rav” said not to
