NY POST: Caller ‘Terminated’ His Candidacy After Mysterious Meeting with Shelly Silver

Nachum Caller, a real estate executive mulling a run for an open City Council seat in Brooklyn dropped out suddenly after meeting with Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who is backing another candidate, The NY Post is reporting.

Caller ended his candidacy last Wednesday after chatting with Silver, who is supporting former government official Joe Lazar in the March 23 special election to replace Councilman Simcha Felder.

Four candidates are expected to file petitions tomorrow in the contest including, David Greenfield, executive VP of the Sephardic Community Association, who has been endorsed by Mayor Bloomberg.

One source said Silver wanted Caller out of the race because he feared he would draw votes from Lazar.

But Silver said he met with Caller only as a favor to a rabbi who knows them both and, until last Tuesday, “I didn’t know he was contemplating being a candidate.”

Silver said he gave Caller his frank assessment that “I don’t know that you really have a chance of being successful” but didn’t urge him to withdraw.

Silver also said that Caller had asked to be appointed to state task force.

Caller’s son, Shaya, said his father has “terminated” his candidacy but he didn’t know why.

Meanwhile, the Borough Park Satmar community was promised if they support Greenfield he will help repair the Williamsburg Satmar community’s relationship with Kings County Democratic boss Vito Lopez, because the Rav Aaron Teitelbaum faction in Williamsburg has had a strained relationship with Lopez, said one source.

According to the NY Post, although Greenfield picked up the support of Mayor Bloomberg last week, his campaign is finding it hard to get people in Borough Park to openly support him.

This could be because Assemblymember Dov Hikind appears to be pulling out all the stops in getting the word out that whoever backs Greenfield will have no access to him or State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, said another source.

Bobov Hasidic Jews, of which there are a good many in Borough Park, are still being courted by both Lazar and Greenfield.

  1. the higher ups are scaired of change that is why they want Joe Lazar . if you want things to be improved for the average person , vote for change and vote David greenfield or Moshe Oaring.

  2. What makes these elected officials think they own us and that they will tell us what to do?

Did they forget that we the people are the ones on election day that vote for them and that we the people have a right to tell them what do?

Shelly, Dov, Vito, you really showed your true colors Shame on all of you and its time that we the people show you the door of politics.

We will vote for who ever we want and not for who you want.

Greenfield just for this article you are getting mine and my whole families vote on March 23. (total of 15 votes)

  3. I’m glad to hear that Greenfield will try and make Shalom while Hikind continues to make Machlokes. I’m very disappointed in Caller. I don’t understand why he would listen to Shelly Silver. Shelly is the number-one supporter of Toeiva marriage in New York. Why would R’ Nachman caller listen to him?

  4. BROOKLYN-take a lesson from LAKEWOOD! Vote for the one you feel represents you best-or ask your personal rav for advice. Don’t listen to the politicians or vaads. They have only their own good in mind.

  5. Nachman Caller isn’t made for politics. That’s why! He isn’t a politician and he can’t deal with all the garbage.

  6. The level of your flacking for Greenfield — contriving an innacurate headline to falsely sensentionalize a non-story — is nauseating.

  7. please rabosai we wont forget how dov was fighting to introduce the murky bill and b’h it didt pass .this could have been a death sentence for all mosdos hatorah ,the mosdos could have been hit with fictitious claims .
were was joe lasar then .please I dont see the millions that he brought in to the community .
yes he had a job at omrdd, so what he was a paid worker .
yes I do see the millions what david has got for all mosdos hatorah in new york city .THEY can take advantage of the no child left behind program that help children with their skills.
ALLSO HOW MUCH WORK DAVID DID FOR TAX CREDIT FOR TUTION .
ALLSO ALL THESE PROGRAMS WILL BENFEIT ALL OF NEW YORK STATE NOT JUST THE LOCAL BORO PARK.

RABOSAI PLEASE WAKE UP THE CHOICE IS CLEAR DAVIS GREENFIELD

  8. I am happy that Nachum Caller is not runnig. He seems to be a very menchlach person and politics is not for him. I also feel that being a good candidate, he would take votes away from Greenfield not Lazar. Lazar is not a choice for an intelligent voter. It is frightening to see how Hikind and Silver terrorize everyone around them. Will there be anyone to run against Hikind?

  9. If Nachum Caller was a Republican, then he would have made a wonderful candidate. But, until true conservatives within our own community are willing to register and run as Republicans, we will be subjected to the same Tammany Hall politics that Dov Hikind practices to a limited extent.

  10. Who bought us Felder? Greenfield is a nice guy but a politician Dov worked for us 25 years I’m sticking with him a little hakaras hatov besides Joe has the experience I’m not looking for change I already got that at the president level please keep the change. I want dollars
