“Caught”. This implies said teenager tried to hide it and got caught anyway. If he had to hide, he knows someone feels it is wrong and did it anyway. This is an expression of his rebelliousness. Deal with why he feels the need to rebel against the rule and this will go away on its own. Do it sooner than later, because then he will become addicted and a whole new approach will be necessary.

Health: Lets say this incident is 100% true as you write it, the kids were horrible, rotten to the core, the driver had no recourse but to call the police to restore law and order, are WE (all yeshiva boys who ride the bus) like the goyim because a bus load of boys acted like a bunch of jerks? What percentage of yeshiva boys who ride the bus daily in the tri state area engage in such behavior? Do you believe the bus drivers are paid off to keep these incidents quiet? You think there is an epidemic of “goyish behavior” on school busses everywhere that “we” in general and I in particular am in denial about? If this is such an epidemic, where were you decrying this outrageous behavior, prior to this news item? Was it kept under wraps until now, and this story just blew the lid off a major hush campaign?

Lastly, and this really should have been the very first question asked….when you wrote “This news you won’t find anywhere.” How is it that you are privy to this news which nobody else will find, anywhere? I suppose we should thank you for sharing it with us.

No. I mean merchandising. You wouldnt buy The Moshe and Rochel Cohen Hebrew Academy of Walla Walla cookbook, even if it included the challa recipe of Yenta Schwartz of Spring Valley. Co-opting the names of mosdos and worse, using gedolim to sell things is merchandising at its worst.

Data obviously shows the advertisers that those they want to reach, read said publications so their advertisements are not out of place. It may elicit certain reactions in their non target audience (jealousy is what I am reading), but it is of no concern to them.

“why cant you advertise in goyish publications that serve and are catered specifically for the rich and wealthy people.”

Not sure how many non jewish rich and wealthy are interested in spending Pesach in the Swiss Alps or in buying the latest and greatest shtreimel or sheitel, even if it is top of the line at 4 grand a pop and 30% off.

An incident with one bus full of yeshiva boys out of how many buses filled with yeshiva boys that traverse the tri state area every day? Yes, one incident is one too many, but the hyperbole of some is outrageous to the point where the OP writes “How did we become just like the Goyim, that when there isn’t a parent or a Rebbe watching us, we need the cops around to make us behave?” Of course this was later watered down to only on the bus, but elsewhere not. I guess even the OP is starting to realize just how ridiculous that statement is.

The goal of an advertisement is to get your attention. I think it is safe to say both the hotel and jewelery store got your attention. From the responses here, I would say that the ads created more positive than negative attention. Only the troll and his/her alter egos have an issue with the ad, everyone else is either enthusiastic or ambivalent about the ad.

@DY. I will assume the “they” in your question refers to those who asked the question of R’ Moshe. “They” wanted to give vacation from yeshiva during this week (I dont remember if it was instead of some other week, or not) because the parents were already off from work. In his answer he replies they should not, and as an aside, he says taking vacations during this time (which I understand to mean, a trip to disney or wherever is not appropriate either) even though the parents are off from work is “mechuar” (which I will translate as not appropriate).

The OP seems to be using the word vacation as in taking a vacation day from work, by the juxtaposition to his Sunday comment. then again, trying to make sense of a trollish comment is useless.

Both the I’M and the N’G are not discussing taking off from work as is implied by the OP.

There seems to be a machlokes between shmendrick and notasheep regarding the definition of “long skirt” according to Rav Falk.

According to shmendrick “Long skirts (ankle length)as asked by OP, considered a tznius problem per Oz V’Hadar Levushah by Rav Falk.”

According to the non sheep “The ‘long skirts’ that Rav Falk says are not tznius are those that go below the ankles and sweep the floor”

Unless of course shmendrick refers to women whose ankles sweep the floor?

DY: That is the rationale for possibly closing school. Not the question presented.

To shmendrick, the vacation that the I’M and the N’G are discussing is not taking a day (week) off from work, which you imply with your comment about taking off on sundays.

Funny how some people like nothing more than to stir up the pot. I’m not a moderator, but if I was, I would give shmendrick the subtitle, The Ladle.

As for his synopsis of the igros moshe as follows:

“On this issue, see Igros Moshe Y.D. vol 3, simon 85 that one should not vacation during this time EVEN if he has no intention to celebrate in their holidays, but vacations merely because the parents are off work and want to take a family trip, since the innocent intentions do not vitiate the issur.”

It should be pointed out that this teshuva addresses giving off children from school during this time of the year not taking vacations. Shemendrick, if you want to make a point make up a sefer, dont reference a sefer anyone can access and see for themselves how you misquote it.

“That interprets into the equivalent of saying that the posek is incompetent!”

I am not his/her lawyer (Rav Falk or the user you are disagreement with), but what whitecherry wrote was interpreted differently by me than the way you interpreted it. Rav Falk is a posek, probably a first class posek (I dont know him, or the sefer mentioned), but a posek can only answer a question, to the one who asks it, otherwise, all he can give, are the general rules. Unless of course he has ruach hakodesh and his sayings and writings contain the answers to every eventuality.

“I also understand that there is a need for the OU-D hechsher.”

    Of

course there is. Even people who are stringent regarding “chalav yisroel” eat certain things that are not. A neighbor of mine eats non CY Yogurt, although milk and cheeses is exclusively CY. If an item contained yogurt and was dairy, he would want to know. The yogurt also must be kosher. Why an OU-D appears on a container of milk, was once expplained to me by an employee of the OU. A company pays for the certification and all products in their line that meet the OU requirements get the symbol. Even the milk. It neither adds or detracts from the status of the milk.

“I heard a seminary girl tell me that her school told her not to eat from a certain hechsher because it is the equivalent to OU,”

Go into Boro Park or Williamsburg and you will find many people who do not eat products with an OU. Sometimes it is due to kashrus concerns (EG: The way certain iced tea companies cool down their cans after pasteurization, is problematic according to some opinions if part of the product mix is non kosher grape flavor iced tea – or any non kosher flavor – grape being the most common) but mainly it is because of politics. Dont sweat it. Follow your parents and your Rav, not an ignorant seminary friend.

“I completely trust that the OU is kosher, because I grew up eating it my whole life in the states, but why would Israelis think their hechsherim are much better than the ou”

I think the OU is better than many hechsherim, including Israeli and “heimish”, but that is because I am familiar with the business (and rest assured, it IS a business).

“especially if they have to eat something when recruiting in the states for their seminaries, its not like they bring a suitcase full of three weeks worth of food. That would be kinda illegal.”

This is not really a concern. One can live their entire life in the USA and not eat a single food product labeled with an OU. What they dont know however, is that in the background their own heimishe hechsher relies on the OU. This is true for many commercial products (flavorings and the like for example) where the heimishe hechsherim have very little involvement in the certification process and certify very little in the way of products.

A large pack of non-kosher string cheese costs five dollars kosher is between 10-12 dollars.Chalav stam cream cheese bet. $1.79 and $2.50 chalav yisrael bet.4-5 dollars”

Look at the milk itself. What is the avg price for half gallon of CY milk compared to a gallon of chalav hacompanies? Can one purchase a gallon of CY milk in the greater NYC area where the largest concentration of CY users in the USA are? Why not?

in reply to: Cholov Yisroel V.S. Cholov Stam #903492

The term “chalav stam” is not used by R’ Moshe. He uses the term chalav hacompanies. Chalav stam is a perjorative term created by those who disagreed with the psak of R’ Moshe (although I must admit it is a nicer term, than chalav akum). Which leads me to my next comment, R’ Moshe did not give a “heter”, he gave a psak that the government regulation and oversight satifies the takana of chazal. Yes, he does say a bal nefesh should drink chalav yisroel and directs yeshivos to do the same despite the added cost, it does not change the fact that he says that as far as the takana of chazal is concerned, chalav hacompanies in the USA meets the requirement.
