Mod 80 – “atkins is not high fat. it CAN be high fat, but that is not an integral part of the theory.”
I got my info that Atkins is high fat from the following researchers, esp. the last one. I posted this a year ago under “High Chol.” I think it’s revelant to the discussion:
Member
Sam -Here is the AHA statement: “The AHA advisory, published in the association’s respected journal Circulation, studied existing research and the diets themselves. It concluded that there’s no proof these diets are effective for long-term weight loss and warned that they may cause potential health risks for those who follow them for more than a short time. In addition to the Atkins diet, the advisory panel reviewed the Zone, Protein Power, Sugar Busters and Stillman diets.”
But I guess you and your few friends, know more than many, many medical professionals. BTW, do you know what triglycerides (fat) does to your arteries? It clogges them up and causes heart disease and strokes.

From the Mayo clinic: “Weight loss
Health benefits
The claim: The Atkins diet claims that it can prevent or improve serious health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Atkins also claims that digestive problems such as heartburn, gallstones, gas and bloating will improve when you greatly reduce carbohydrate consumption.
Exercise
The claim: The Atkins diet says that exercise is a vital part of its approach. It also says exercise is important to maintaining weight loss and achieving other health benefits. And it disputes any notion that you can do the Atkins diet successfully without exercise.
The reality: Physical activity and exercise help you burn more calories, aiding weight loss. Regular physical activity is also vital to prevent regaining the weight you’ve lost and, of course, provides numerous health benefits. Although the Atkins diet says exercise is important, it doesn’t specify how much you need. Healthy adults typically need at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. However, if you’re obese or you want to lose weight, you may need to increase your activity.
Risks
It’s not known with certainty what risks, if any, the Atkins diet may pose to your health, especially over the long term.
Some health experts believe that eating a large amount of fat and protein from animal sources, as allowed on the Atkins diet, can increase your risk of heart disease or some cancers. However, it’s not known what risks, if any, the Atkins diet may pose over the long term because most of the studies about it have lasted for a year or less.
In addition, the Atkins diet isn’t appropriate for everyone. For example, Atkins warns that people with severe kidney disease should not follow the diet. It also cautions that the weight-loss phases of the diet aren’t suitable for women who are pregnant or nursing. The Atkins diet recommends that you consult your doctor before starting the diet, especially if you have diabetes or gout or take diuretics, insulin or oral diabetes medications.
There are other risks associated with any commercial weight-loss diet:
?If you skip a face-to-face evaluation with your health care provider, you may be unaware of important medical concerns.
?The diet isn’t tailored to your specific situation, including your weight-loss goals and any health conditions you might have.
?A very restrictive menu may cause you to give up on your weight-loss goals.
?You may not get enough fiber on low-carb diets, which may increase your risk of constipation, certain kinds of cancer and other digestive problems.
?Unless you take a multivitamin or nutritional supplement, you may be at risk of certain nutritional deficiencies.”

To all the health “know it alls”; -I’m really getting tired of trying to convince you to be healthy. I actually make money when people are sick, so I’m not doing this for myself. From Reuters:
” WASHINGTON – The high-fat Atkins diet can cause long-term damage to blood vessels, as well as some of the inflammation linked with heart and artery disease, U.S. researchers reported on Tuesday.
In contrast, low-fat regimens such as the South Beach and Ornish diets lowered cholesterol and appeared to benefit artery function, they said.
“It really is the Atkins diet that is the worst,” Dr. Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, said in a telephone interview.
“The Atkins diet caused the LDL levels to go up by about 7 percent, whereas in the Ornish and South Beach diets … they went down 7 to 10 percent.”
Low density lipoprotein or LDL is the “bad” cholesterol that clogs blood vessels.
Various researchers have tested the benefits of the popular diets and reached wildly differing conclusions. Miller designed what he said was a unique approach — to see how people fared once they stopped losing weight on any of the diets.
Studies show that people usually lose weight rapidly on any diet if they follow it properly and the weight loss itself can cause cholesterol to plummet.
“When you lose weight everything looks good but after a while you plateau and you hit a maintenance stage,” said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the American Heart Association in Orlando, Florida.
His team studied 18 people, each of whom completed a full month on each of the three diets. They were carefully monitored to ensure that they did not lose weight.
The Atkins diet was set to deliver 50 percent of calories as fat, the South Beach was 30 percent fat and the Ornish diet, designed by nutritionist Dr. Dean Ornish, was 10 percent fat.
While on each diet the volunteers were tested for levels of blood fats, including cholesterol and markers for inflammation.
The researchers used ultrasound scans to measure the flexibility and dilation of blood vessels and measured proteins in the blood that can indicate inflammation.
“Some markers of inflammation were increased by as much as 30 to 40 percent during the Atkins phase, whereas during the South Beach and Ornish phases, the markers either were stable or went down, some by as much as 15 to 20 percent,” Miller said.
Most studies have shown that diets that stress vegetables, low-fat sources of protein such as beans and legumes, and whole grains provide the best long-term weight loss. Many low-fat diets allow processed carbohydrates such as white flour, which have also been shown to be unhealthy, experts agree.
“We don’t recommend the Atkins diet,” Miller said. “Why not start out with a diet that will be healthier for you in the long run after weight loss?” “
Maybe you really don’t know everything about health, just because you read something on some natural health site or blog!

HealthParticipantmsseeker – It’s not the amount of people who do terrible sins, it’s the fact that it’s not dealt with. Lots and lots of people sweep these things under the carpet. This transverses from the top to the bottom of the Klal.
Did you ever hear of “Lo Saamod Al Dam Rayech” & “V’artoh Horah Mekirbecha”?!?!
HealthParticipantWife Mommy – I posted in the stop smoking thread -that it’s not called trying unless you try a 3-pronged approach. Look it up.
July 15, 2011 5:54 pm at 5:54 pm in reply to: A third of Litvish families I know, have one or more single daughters 25 and up #909360HealthParticipantDY – Despite what is written in the Kesubah, almost noone in Kollel has any financial responsibilities.
Anyway it’s not just the Shver, they say he has a company of 5 & the gov. working for him. The guy’s parents (2), the in-laws (4), and of course the Vibel (5), plus all the Gov. programs!
HealthParticipantBomb – Again, because they have no Jurisdiction. Think about what happens when a diplomat is accused/does a crime. If it happens here can we prosecute the guy? No. Why? Because we have no Jurisdiction.
Even if the secular courts here judged up everything correctly acc. to the 7 Mitzvos Bnai Noach, they still wouldn’t have Jurisdiction. Why? Because a Jew can only be judged up acc. to Torah laws by a proper Bais Din with proper Dayanim.
Nowadays there are no Bottey Dinim that can judge up capital crimes. Sometimes, although rarely, you’re allowed, even nowadays, to be Moiser to the gov.
HealthParticipantWife Mommy – Ok, I can understand at the time why you would overlook it, but WHY aren’t you insisting he quit now? Do you not care about him? I posted many times on YWN how a person can quit. Please look up the posts.
HealthParticipantmsseeker – “Such as…? What can be more important than ???? ????? ????? What can be more tragic than ??? ??????? WHat can be better than ?? ?’ ????? ????? ???? ??????”
Oh come on, if I would try to post what I’m thinking, it wouldn’t make it through. V’hamayven Yoven!
HealthParticipantadorable -Isn’t this what e/o said already? And they also said if it’s moved from it’s original place, it doesn’t.
HealthParticipantWhat are you a high school kid learning Lomdus? Lomdus has nothing to do with Halacha.
1. I don’t think that the Din of Goel Hadom applies during the time when there is no Arey Miklot.
2. Even if it does, since we are in Golus, you can’t put yourself in danger because if you kill s/o they will prosecute you. This is true even in Israel because they have secular rules. They don’t apply Torah rules esp. in a case of killing (whether permitted by the Torah or not)!
July 15, 2011 3:32 pm at 3:32 pm in reply to: A third of Litvish families I know, have one or more single daughters 25 and up #909357HealthParticipantDY – This whole convo is talking about guys who learn in EY and then go to Lakewood. What – there are no guys in Shidduchim in America who don’t follow this route?
“When someone gets married, he takes on financial responsibilities that he did not previously have,”
Not in Lakewood -he don’t!
HealthParticipantbombmaniac – “and as far as i know (correct me if i am wrong) there is nothing in there that precludes a death penalty.”
Actually, one of the 7 is to establish courts to kill on the other 6. A big problem is -Do they have Jurisdiction over a Yid?
When the Halacha says that the Gov./ Kingdom can mete out Justice was this only (probably) a Jewish Kingdom? This is the problem with Mesira -they don’t have jurisdiction over the Yid and therfore they can’t kill him. Mesira is only Mutter in very few cases.
July 15, 2011 3:09 pm at 3:09 pm in reply to: Refuting the liberal claims about the tragedy. #786612HealthParticipantCharlie – “The gemara and Rambam disagree.”
Name them. And if you’re talking about once where you quoted something about one witness in a Goyish court, that witness only makes it into circumstantial evidence!
HealthParticipanthappiest – “I am definitely not overweight enough for surgery.”
You probably can get the gastric band though. If you live in Brooklyn, MMC has such a program.
HealthParticipantWolfishMusings – These cases are just speculation amongst the posters what Bais Din would have done or not done. Obviously we REALLY have no clue how they actually operated.
“However, he expressed his frustration that since (a) he didn’t actually witness the murder and (b) there were no other witnesses, he could not have the person face the justice he deserved. At that point, a snake came along and bit the murderer, killing him.”
You have no proof from this Gemorroh one way or another. Acc. to Tosphos the Gemorrah says that the next part is a Rayah to what he was saying that he wanted to teach us there are other ways to kill a Rotzeach even in the time of the Bais Hamikdash. So he said I can’t kill him in Bais Din, but Hashem will kill him. How do you know if he wasn’t teaching us about that Hashem has other ways of taking care of business that he wouldn’t have taken the guy to Bais Din and killed him with the Kipa?
HealthParticipantDroid – “There wasn’t even circumstantial evidence there. Just bad guesses.”
If you go back to my posts on the topic I posted the evidence.
I’ll repeat -finding a dead body that wasn’t reported is suspicious as murder. Finding tape and a bag is even more suspicious. The mother had a motive. The only time I would concede to anybody that they aren’t Mechuyav to kill her is if they found s/o who had a bigger motive than the mother. This hasn’t proven to be the case, so far.

July 14, 2011 6:13 pm at 6:13 pm in reply to: Refuting the liberal claims about the tragedy. #786603HealthParticipantThe Goyim should seek the death penalty in a case of circumstantial murder. Over here he is a Yid, R’ Moshe Zt’l held the US can’t have jurisdiction over a Yid, so therefore even though the Torah holds there should be two Dinim, one for a Goy and one for a Yid, this wouldn’t sit well with them for obvious reasons. So therefore he said -noone in the US should get the death penalty!
HealthParticipantlove a yid – In actuality, he probably is crazy, not just evil.
The problem is in America’s Justice system if he is declared insane, he goes to a jail for the criminally insane. So you say -what’s wrong with that? I’ll tell you – because one day they can declare him normal and he would be freed, as opposed if they give him a sentence of life without a chance of parole!
HealthParticipantmsseeker – While I agree, it’s something to work on. I feel that there are so many other things which are more important and it is thrown under the carpet!
HealthParticipantRainus -“But to kill him actively or passively on the basis of a confession, it doesn’t seem probable.”
You’re wrong, I think they would put him a Kipa. They used the Kipa for circumstantial evidence. This has nothing to do with a confession. If the cops found the victim in the fridge, that’s enough circumstantial evidence to put him in the Kipa. To mete out justice directly from the Bais Din, then you need Eidim, Hasroh, etc. Kipa was used to show it’s not a Hefker Velt and the actual killing of criminals by Bais Din was very rare, not usually more than once in 70 years. The Torah justice system is much stronger than anything we have nowadays in the US justice system. And all those who keep claiming Anthony’s verdict is Just, have no clue how the Torah looks at it. They claim there are no witnesses or DNA. The Torah only looks at the Goyim having to kill for the other 6 Mitzvos, when the evidence is circumstantial. In other words, all you people who claim Justice was done in the Anthony case, would scream “Unjust, Crazy Verdict”, if a 100 witnesses came forward and said they saw her do it. In the Torah eyes, these 100 witnesses aren’t any different than circumstantial evidence. There is no difference between a 100 or a billion witnesses, none of the testimony is believed. So how could acc. to the Torah a Goyish Court mete out Justice? Only with circumstantial evidence. The witnesses just make it circumstantial. The Anthony case is circumstantial right now, even though there are no witnesses. A circumstantial case means -you don’t know for sure. But this is what the Goy has to mete out justice for. Justice is one of the 7 Mitzvos Bnai Noach. The same was done in Bais Din -if it’s circumstantial -the criminal was put in a Kipa!
HealthParticipant“It seems like this is my last option…”
Wrong. There is weight loss surgery and gastric banding. Each one has their own benefits & risks.
HealthParticipantThey use it in cases of circumstantial crimes, were the crime would normally be a capital case. Levi, the monster would be subject to the treatment of Kipa.
HealthParticipantzahavasdad -Where did you hear that?
HealthParticipantOk Hudi -Name the drugs and which class they belong to.
There are none in the beta blockers -they all end with -lol.
HealthParticipantTaking a 24 hr. drug before the fast helps. People in their homes sell 24hr Tylenol or 24 hr aspirin to help support a Kollel in Toronto. I personally take a 24 hr NSAID.
HealthParticipantI think what might have happenned was that once upon a time all b-blockers did end in -olol. With the advent of more b-blockers they needed to just limit the ending to -lol.
HealthParticipantHaLeiVi – I’ve seen a letter from A Big Poisek, I think it was R. Elyashiv, that this type of healing is Ossur. I don’t know enough about “energy healing”, to argue the exact points, but I don’t think you are on the caliber to argue with this Psak.
HealthParticipantIt depends on whether you can get the info you need from the Shiksa.
HealthParticipantYenta – I don’t care what degree he/she has, but he/she obviously made a mistake. If you feel uncomfortable, you don’t have to correct him/her. The mistake ain’t gonna make any difference to anyone.
HealthParticipantYenta – “and according to my pharm teacher Beta-blockers are -OLOL”
You shouldn’t have baited me; now my ego is swelling.
Your teacher is wrong. Here are two examples that proves I’m right – labetalol, carvedilol!
HealthParticipant“The instructor, (the local auto mechanic, gorilla sized) would pick each kid up, and toss him ten feet up and twenty over to land in deeper water (not a pool).”
Yes, this was the way they used to do it. They have since then figured out a better way!
HealthParticipant“make sure that whoever teaches you is certified to teach and is a lifeguard and dont let them “practice” on you like I’ve seen a lot of times.”
You don’t have to be a lifeguard if you’re a WSI and vice-versa.
HealthParticipantAdorable – Take a real course for about $1500 -2000 from a school like Yaffa or Georgie, if you want to break into the Shaital business.
HealthParticipanthudi – “To memorize it helps to know the categories of drugs and each categoires suffix.”
Wrong on “it helps”, there is no other way to do it, unless you have a photographic memory! Eg. lol -ending is Beta-blockers, like propanolol.
HealthParticipanti love coffe -I’m not that interested. If s/o wants to go to her, they have to find out whether she’s Kosher or not.
HealthParticipantICOT – It’s for a relative and I don’t think he/she is interested right now. Thanks anyway.
HealthParticipantThe Goq – What type of company is Phat Pharm?
Clothing for obese people?
HealthParticipantam yisrael chai – I find it extremely amusing that you’re commenting/arguing on a comment that’s a figment of someone’s imagination! Noone ever said that comment! 🙂
HealthParticipanti love coffe – As much as I would like to “Dan” these people “L’caf zecus”, somehow I get the feeling this lady knows no Kabbalah!
HealthParticipantmsseeker – “My “bet” is that the more muttar it is in a community to watch TV, videos, read secular mags etc., the higher the molestation incidence. It’s simple: ???? ????, ???? ????, ???? ???? ??????. The “outlet” soon gets boring and breeds more exciting “outlets”, i.e. infidelity, molestation, etc.”
You could bet as much as you want, but I don’t think you speak the Emes (not mss). I don’t have a lot of Shaychus to modern communities, but yet I’ve not heard one case of molestation from
them taking place from either a Rebbe or Principal. The cases I know about are from the Frummest communities. If you have knowledge of molestation that has occured in the modern communities, please post.
Posting any theories you want, from today till tomorrow, without any proof doesn’t change anything besides stroking your ego!
HealthParticipantMazel Tov! I hope they are paying you.
July 11, 2011 2:49 pm at 2:49 pm in reply to: A third of Litvish families I know, have one or more single daughters 25 and up #909303HealthParticipantAZ – “2) Encourage repudiation and in fact there are many girls who go that route once they hit the high 20’s/30’s (not that this really help anything, because the women of those first marriages, divorces or widows end up even more stuck since the men who have previously been married have the opportunity to look for women who have never been married instead of women who have been married)”
Yes, I agree with this one. I actually alluded to it in the topic of “Who wants to be a Tzaddakes like Rus”.
Your misgivings are not the reality. There are two types of second marriages one is middle age and one is older age. The older age people tend to marry usually because they don’t want to be alone in their older years. These aren’t interested in more kids as usually both have from previous (even if biologically it’s possible). The second type are the people in the middle age. Unfortunately the women don’t always want to get remarried, some because they are busy raising their kids or some because they went OTD. So there are more men in this class looking for marriage than women.
“in fact there are many girls who go that route once they hit the high 20’s/30’s”
This I disagree with. Maybe there are a few, but definitely not many. If there were many -this class wouldn’t have problems with Shidduchim. The fact that there are so few is because I believe it’s a strong stigma not to marry older guys esp. those whom are divorced! So now we have two stigmas to contend with -this and marrying s/o your own age!
HealthParticipantYenta – Actually I found pharm easy. But this my suggestion -Get over to B & N. They have tons of pharm books in the med/nursing section. Leaf though them and pick one or more that you think would be good for you. Here are some books I found for you on Amazon:
1. Nursing Pharmacology Made Incredibly Easy! (Incredibly Easy! Series) by Springhouse (Paperback – Jun 23, 2008)
2. Medical Dosage Calculations For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness)) by Dr. Richard Snyder and Barry Schoenborn (Paperback – May 3, 2011)
3. The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Prescription Drugs by Michael C. Gerald (Paperback – Aug 1, 2006)
4. Understanding Prescription Drugs For Canadians For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)) by Ian Blumer and Heather McDonald-Blumer (Paperback – Mar 20, 2007)
5. Mosby’s Pharmacology Memory NoteCards: Visual, Mnemonic, and Memory Aids for Nurses by JoAnn Zerwekh MSN EdD RN, Jo Carol Claborn MS RN and Tom Gaglione MSN RN (Spiral-bound – Dec 5, 2007)
6. Pharmacology Made Insanely Easy by Loretta Manning, Sylvia Rayfield and Nicole Blackwelder (Paperback – Apr 2009)
7. Clinical Pharmacology Made Ridiculously Simple by James M. Olson (Paperback – Jul 1, 2010)
8. Clinical Pharmacology Made Incredibly Easy! (Incredibly Easy! Series) by Springhouse (Paperback – Jun 4, 2008)
HealthParticipantmsseeker – “And I’ll bet my bottom $ that the more TV, videos, shmutzy books, magazines, newspapers, the more molestation.”
This could be true amongst Goyim, but not amongst Yidden. From those whom I know to be molesters or accused to be molesters, none came from the background where they were exposed to such things. Most actually were/are in Rebbe or Principal positions. If anything one could make an argument that maybe we shouldn’t be so strict on these things like you mentioned because some people need an outlet and if having this outlet we can prevent molestation in our community.
HealthParticipantrebbi1 -“Ok to be more specific – high blood pressure. I was told that Chinese Med has a good success rate for getting it under control and not having to take med for the rest of my life.”
To be honest with you, it really depends on how high. If your talking between 140 -160, then perhaps things besides meds will work. Besides herbs and vitamins, people try biofeedback, diet, weight loss, amongst other things. Google – Mother’s nature on Hypertension/High Blood Pressure for more info.
But, if you’re above 160, it’s unlikely anything besides meds will get you down where you need to be. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it, but you have to go on meds first. If after you’re on meds and the other stuff brings you down below 120, then you can slowly wean off the meds! Keep in mind anything you do for your BP will be for the rest of your life, not just meds.
Sometimes it’s hard to do something that you’ll have to do forever, but in this case it’s lifesaving!
HealthParticipantcherrybim – “You keep on saying that but there is no evidence at all that anyone did anything; only that Casey is an idiot.”
And I’ll keep saying it until you get my point. You obviously think that circumstantial evidence can’t be enough to be considered “beyond a reasonable doubt”. Yet many, many cases -Courts have found people guilty with just circumstantial evidence. IMHO and the opinion of many others in this country, this case, even though it’s based on circumstantial evidence, exceeds the standard of “beyond a reasonable doubt”!
“Regarding your previous post; as much as we want to believe them, police are known to lie on the stand.”
Again, you failed to understand my point. Whether police should be believed more than anyone else, I said to this – I understand if this belief disqualifies potentional jurors. But my disbelief was on your statement that cops are believed less than e/o else and they need to have corroborating evidence to be believed. Why in the world shouldn’t they be believed the same as e/o else? Are cops the only ones whom have ever lied on the witness stand?!?!
I don’t know if you’re a liberal or not, but these views that you present are the most ludicrous I’ve ever heard!
July 10, 2011 3:29 pm at 3:29 pm in reply to: A third of Litvish families I know, have one or more single daughters 25 and up #909265HealthParticipant“I think we both agree that we think that there are too many singles unmarried and that, if possible, something should be done.”
I agree. I’m not going into the statistical science of whether the cause or one of the causes is – boys should marry girls the same age. It doesn’t really interest me. In my opinion, the statistics were probably made up. You can’t extrapolate from census statistics anything except perhaps how many Frum males and females there are. This doesn’t tell you anything why people aren’t getting married. The PERCENT of unmarried people is much greater than any difference between the statistical number of males vs. females. But I think the people who think they have the solution with these statistics are using it so they have something to hang their hat on.
I’m not like the rest of you Generals sitting in the situation room discussing strategy, I’m down here in the trenches. And I’ll tell you what I see – I see too much Motzay Shem Ra and badmouthing.
We all realize that the 3 weeks are about to begin. So the next time s/o asks you info about s/o for a Shidduch, please think THRICE before you answer, esp. if it’s something negative!
HealthParticipantJoe -Wrong on both counts:
1. From my previous posts: The evidence here is called circumstantial, but never the less this evidence has found many a person guilty. She is guilty beyond any reasonable doubt.
2. The Halacha is – in a case of circumstantial evidence that you put the criminal in a Kippa; they don’t get off scot free!!
HealthParticipantICOT -I don’t even know what a card reader is. Please tell me.
HealthParticipantCherrybim – “Generally, police testimony is given very little credence unless corroborated by other evidence.”
Please tell me if you found this in federal court or state court, and which state? I find this statement unbelievable (even though it’s probably true) and appalling. I’ve heard that in a cetain state that they ask the Jury candidates if they would believe a cop over s/o else and if they answer yes -they are dismissed. But I never heard that what you posted! They are ordered by the court to do this or they do it on their own? How could a Jury not believe a cop any less than e/o else? They will believe a lying low life and not a cop?!?!
I can’t believe the system is so corrupt! Did the libs destroy everything that was decent in our justice system? A cop should be believed on their testimony as much as any other witness!! Nuff said!!
