in reply to: Flatbush Drivers Beware! #682035

To the best of my recollection, there are three separate levels of “no”:

    1) No parking – the least severe.

    2) No standing – you can drop off or pick up a passenger, but you can’t remain in the spot, even if you stay in the driver’s seat with the engine running. A bus stop is an example.

    3) No stopping – you can’t even stop to let someone out. If you can’t pull over to the curb and you pull over next to a parked car to let someone out, you are in violation. This is usually not enforced for drop-offs and pick-ups, but occasionally people get ticketed for this. If you double-park you are in violation of the no-stopping area and can be ticketed. Remaining in the drivers seat (even with the engine running and the car in gear) makes no difference.

    2) Will the answer be a single color (either black or white) or “mixed” if the maximum number of turns is reached? Mixed

    3) Why?

    a) If B and C have four of the same color, A knows the answer immediately (one turn)

    b) If A and C have four of the same color, B knows the answer immediately (two turns)

    c) If A and B each have two of the same color, C knows that he (C) has a mix, since if he (C) also had solid colors A or B would have guessed the answer (three turns).

    Black and White

(a logic puzzle, cribbed from another site and slightly edited)

Three people, imaginatively named A, B and C, are contestants in a game.

The host has eight small stickers; four white and four black.

    The three contestants are blindfolded.

The two remaining stickers are discarded.

    The blindfolds are removed.

The contestants know that the total number of stickers attached to foreheads are either:

    a) 4 black, 2 white.

    b) 4 white, 2 black

    c) 3 black, 3 white

    Now the game begins.

    The possible answers are:

    a) Black, black

    b) White, white

    c) Mixed

If a contestant guesses correctly, he wins 400 dollars and the other two players win 300 each.

If a contestant guesses incorrectly, the game ends and they each get nothing. (This rule is to eliminate guessing, even when a contestant knows that the next player will guess correctly.)

    2) Will the answer be a single color (either black or white) or “mixed” if the maximum number of turns is reached?

    3) Why?

To attempt at putting the overly-wonkish instructions into English:

Put your mouse over the blue “Z” in the alphabet list above.

This means “Sorry, but Z isn’t one of the letters. Now, give yourself a hand (or whatever limb is appropriate)”.

    Honor-system hangman.

To avoid paricipants being available when I’m not and vice-versa, this hangman game will be played using the honor system.

Hover over a letter in the alpahbetic list above and the position(s) which that letter occupies on the board will appear on the bottom of your browser where your link gets listed when you hover over a real URL. If that letter isn’t in the secret word a “sorry!” will appear.

You can then update the game as it progresses. It’s not necessary to recreate the entire board, as that can be a pain if you haven’t done it before.

If you understand the instructions and play the game properly, I’ll be the first to recognize your accomplishment and congratulate you.

Here’s to something new! (15 letters).

In good conscience the following wee smidgen of a hint must be given:

Let’s say (speaking in the hypothetical) that the “nothing to do with Purim” statement above was made in the spirit of venahapoch hu.

Let’s further say that answer 7 above was correct, but it could be spelled “?????”

…and that 9, while also correct, would be “????”

    (13 is fine as-is.)

Find-a-word gives away the answers so you know what to look for.

The answers have nothing to do with the prior puzzle, which (remember) has nothing to do with Purim.

Zip. Zilch. Nada. Or (as I thought in the voting booth in 2000), Gore-nischt.

I hope your niece has had a refuah shelaima.

Is she still in a “tehilim is requested” situation?

Yasher koach to “YW Moderator-80” who has been quite busy looking up and posting helpful info for others (as well as keeping some threads that were going off-the-rails “moderate”).
