Before we litigate what happened a century and a half ago, why don’t we start with more recent history? How about when the government decreed that tenants could squat on a citizens property without paying rent, and the owner couldn’t evict them?

At the risk of sounding callous

A fool and his money are soon parted.
Once upon a time, when these organizations were fewer in number, I could be more sympathetic to a poor older single who’d fall for these tactics. They have slick marketing, and know how to play to these unfortunates’ emotions. It’s so easy to believe that the “nissim” stories are true, and of course, it’s all tzedakah, right?
But nowadays, when every other magazine ad is for a new pop-up tzedakah organization promising refuos and yeshuos if you’ll just write them a check, (see flashy ads above) I think that if you fall for it, it’s on you.

I agree. We have enough sociopaths of our own. We don’t need any more.

    @inquisitive girl:
I usually try to just donate $18 or so anonymously and tell the one who sent me the link that I gave anonymously. I can’t always get away with that, because the way these fundraisers are structured; the whole point is the pressure.
It’s quite unbelievable how shnorrering from family & friends has become socially acceptable.
I think it’s disgusting and wrong. Everyone knows you’re only donating because of the social pressure. What kind of tzedaka is that?

The entire world of fundraising has become a hotbed of blackmail, lies and distortions. There is no such thing as a straightforward fundraising campaign where they present what they do and ask for your donation. No, now they’ll swear that every gadol promises the world if you donate. Then there are guaranteed segulos for every problem under the sun. Then there is the blackmail campaigns begin. Every of your 8 siblings, and 50 of your friends, and your monkey’s uncle, has to send you their fundraising team page for their shul, each of their 7 kids’ yeshivas, the 8 organizations they like, etc…, and then you have the social pressure to donate to 185 different campaigns each year…. after all, you can’t not donate when your dear sibling/friend has sent you the link and reminded you 3 times that the campaign ends soon.
Then there are the sports fundraisers. Bike for this, run for that, rappel, skydive, swim, etc. Fundraising had never been so much fun.
I’m sick of all the slimy techniques.

@rightwriter – Israelis are drinking coffee out of plastic bags? I know about the milk bags, but this is too much.

It’s very simple. All those dozens of different foods are just mayonnaise with different flavorings. So it’s just a matter of deciding how you want your mayo flavored. Dill, mushroom, olive, etc…. Basically all the same thing.
Shabbos dips are the biggest scam. Charging $4-$5 for a little tub of flavored mayo which cost 35 cents to produce is ridiculous.

I wouldn’t encourage anyone to waste their time listening to politics rather than making more constructive use of their time.
That aside, something to keep in mind is that unfortunately, Ben Shapiro quite often uses not-quite-proper language on his show.

Unlike the rest of you, I am glad for GadolHadorah’s comment. She is exposing herself for what she really is.
The only other explanation is that she is trying to rile people up. If that’s the case then she is just as sick.

    CTLAWYER:
Point taken. However I am not saying Amazon doesn’t have its place in online commerce. Many Yidden used to, and still do make living selling on eBay, but people aren’t generally ordering items on eBay they would otherwise have bought at a local and/or Jewish-owned store.
I am getting out of the habit of ordering items that I would buy at my local store but often would order on Amazon for the convenience. It’s too easy to pop open the Amazon app and order that jar of coffee or can of cocoa which will show up at my door the next day or so, but instead I can make sure to buy it locally and do my small part to help support my fellow Jew.

Aside from not wanting to support Amazon, I have started cutting down on my Amazon purchases when possible for a different reason: Shopping local.
The lockdowns which badly affected many Jewish businesses have reminded me of what my priorities as a Yid should be. It is a mitzvah to support another Yid, Even if it costs a bit more and it is less convenient. Why should I give my money to a mega corporation, especially one whos’ politics I don’t support, when I can get a mitzvah every time I make a purchase?
This is aside from the fact that communities should really patronize their local businesses at any rate.
