Golders greener i agree to the apartmant business being crazy in general, but i think that this particular family actually owns enough apartments in both sanhedria nad tzefas, so i wouldn’t worry about them.

Twisted, I do not know that paricular story, but it could well be true.

The Germans announced their intentions by the late 1930’s, however no one took them seriously. By 1940 Auschwitz hadn’t been built yet, In fact the entire “final solution” was only introduced at the beggining of 1941. Please remember, even yidden in occupied Hungary failed to beleive the stories they heard until it was too late for most of them.

Nonetheless there is no question that both Britain and the US could have done a lot more duringthe war, both in terms of immigration, and in terms of ruining the german plans.

The minhag in Belz was to amke havdala on a bare table – without even a plate under the becher, since the overflowing wine symblizes brocho, it was thought best that it overflow onto the table.

The present belzer rebbe stopped this minhag, but many talmidim of the previous rebbe do do it, as does the rebbe of Belz-Machnovka

Although i am not out to defend the british, i would like to point out a couple of things.

    a) the british never actually SANK any ships of refugees, directly killing yidden. they turned numerous ships back, which eventually sank, and thereby caused many deaths, but they never actually sank any ships.

    b) the british made the mistake of appointing a yiddishe high commisioner, Sir herbert Samuel, for eretz yisroel. In an attempt to prove his lack of bias,he leaned heavily towards the arab side.

    c) During WWII the brittish allowed numerous refugees into eretz yisroel, by turning a blind eye to numerous ships, on both an indivual and and governmental level, saving numerous lives. In the entire period, the us only once turned a blind eye, during 1938, on intervention of morgenthau.

    d) The brittish allowed unlimited refugees into England during the entire war, [with esception of enemy citizens], and was actually one of the very few safe havens – although many failed to take advantage.

    e) The british prime minister immediately befre the war was a well known coward, called neville chamberlain. Since he was that after the british would leave e”y the arabs would win any war, he therefore leaned towards the arab side in terms of immigration.

    f) The british were attacked many times by the Etzel and Lechi groups, (and retaliated), this obviously did nothing to help the british – israeli relationship.

    g) over 75% of the land mass britian had in the mid east was given directly into arab hands some way or another, including much of present day jordan, and icluding the sinai/suez peninsula, only conceded by antony eden to Egypt in 1956.

    h) any democratically elected changing government will renege on promises mada under previous governments – no different than Obama reneged on promises made by previous presidents, to transfer the embassy top jerusalem.

    i) ABOVE ALL, i highly doubt that the british are interested in returning to eretz yisroel – especailly as they will soon find themselves overrun by the few muslims who are not yet in france.

In terms of cousins marrying, what do you guys say to the following.

The oldest daughter of the tchernobler rebbe of benei berak, r’ nochum twersky, is married to his younger brother – i.e. her uncle. His second daughter is married to his nephew, i.e. her first cousin. These two sisters were then meshadech!!!! The chosson and kallah were first cousins, as were three of the parents!!!

The daughter of the imrei chayim of vitznitz, brocho z”l, was married to R’ moishe ernster. Their son, r’ mendel, married a daughter of the yeshuois moishe – his first cousin, while his son married a daughter of r’ yisroel – the present vizhnitzer rebbe. R’ yisroel was also meshadech with another bil, and a uncle!!!

Mind you, I would consider their 17 year age gap more disturbing than their being related.

I would not advise to be disturbed by an odom godoil. Koirach was also “disturbed” and it didn’t take him too far.

They say that R’ Ovadia Yosef once met r’ dovid, and asked him if he says “yismach yisroel be’aisov!!!”

Thanks for all your help guys. this is way better than googling!!!

I wanted to know about their schools, someone told me that since they have very few of their own chassidim, their school attracts a lot of kids from “klal chassidi” backgrounds – i.e. not belz ger vitnitz etc…

Is it true that a lot of “chutznikim” send their chidlren there?

Maybe irene was connected to the gerrers refusal to vote for R’ meir Porush in the last mayoral election in e”y, and this is for the lack of achdus displayed by netzach hatoira and the gerrers refusing to recognise the rotation agreement.

(BTW my children regularly wonder outdoors in their socks, so i’m not sure if it would help to install concrete floors, but it is an original idea all the same.

OOmis, no problem, i am just emailing my mil to jpin this discussion.

i do not know if all these gareshead stories are true, but i would far more worried about what happens to a child who forgets to bring his sneakers to school than wearing weekday shoes on shabbos.

A neighbor’s child returned home today from school, hysterical and, you guessed it, unshod.

The story? When the school secretary, an eldery woman, arrived in the school that morning she tripped over a stair, and her shoe fell off. the child promptly kicked it across the yard.

What do you guys say? It’s a true story.

Oonmis, there is a big difference between paying rent – i.e. helping out in a situation that the children chose, and buying our kids things, that the parents do not want them to have.

Imagine a parent saying i will pay your rent but only if you live in a particular place? i will pay tuition but only in a certain school. i accept that this is not quite the same, but any parent who decides things for their grandchildren is overstepping her boundaries.

I;m sure all you guys are amazing bubby’s and judge every situation really well, but i feel that in a general case, a mil should limit herself to neutral gifts – nosh toys etc…, and not give gifts like paying for summer camp or buying shabbos shoes, which are the parents right to decide on.

If i have it right, in the last municipial elections, the Gerrer chassidim brought mr. nir barkat to power as mayor, and he promised to install a mizrachi Rabbi in the job, rather than somebody chareidi who diametrically opposes the state.

Since that election was a serious fight between R’ porush and the Gerrers, and since barkat actually kept many of his promises, this is a BIG ISSUE.

the rabbi does not too much power, but the mayor does.

I am reluctant to write about any other moissod’s way of disciplining, but I think that one has to realise that every case is different. If a child does not accept authority on a regular basis, then it is necassary to have a punishment that all the children will remember for a long time, in order to keep discipline.

Although i have never used this particular punishment i think that some more extreme measures are necassary to ensure that the clas/camp run smoothly, and authority is accepted.

A poshute yid, I like your idea, but i am not sure it will help, my siblings in e”y buy their children cheap black sneakers for teh winter and evencheaper black sandals for the summer and they wear them for Shabbos and weekday, anyway my MIL has never said a word to them [at least as far as i know]

Purim mashgaich, i do not your mishna berura, and i feel that children, especailly boys who weasr basically the same things all the time, should have nicer shoes for shabbos, but there was a post that if ound on here which seems to say that most poskim do not hold shoes fall under the category of clothes for kibud shabbos.

I was just wondering if anyone actually knows any source for this minhag aveilim business. Also perhaps today is different because it has become more normal?

Also, if i decide to encourage my children to wear their shoes around the house, does anyone have any practical ideas how to do it?

BTW, why is it so clear to everyone that kibud eim includes things that no relevance to her? My husband’s Rov told him thatkibud Eim only includes things that add to her respect or comfort.

Also, are there any halachic sources for using real plates?
