Sam:
I meant he heads the IRF geirus board.
Also, he is YCT’s poster child. They certainly don’t consider him one of their bad apples in any way.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantHe heads their geirus board. No wonder they don’t require kabalas ol mitzvos, lol.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantDoes it taste good?
July 17, 2013 6:32 pm at 6:32 pm in reply to: Which is better: a bad chavrusa or no chavrusa? #966361popa_bar_abbaParticipantYou are correct. And that would accord with the research that men’s intelligence has a fatter tail.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantRegarding runaways, it’s actually quite pashut. See Devarim 23:16.
The gemara in gittin records a machlokes what this refers to.
The passuk says ?? ????? ??? ?? ?????? ??? ???? ???? ??? ??????
Do not return a slave to his master, who has escaped to you from his master.
??? ??? ???? ????? says this applies where a slave escapes from outside eretz yisroel to eretz yisroel. The braisa says that the slave can force the master to free him, and agree to pay the master his value. Rambam brings this in Avadim 8:10.
??? says that this applies to a person who purchases a slave and stipulates that it is on condition that he will immediately free him. He is therefore required to free him.

(The supreme court justices proves nothing, since they are chosen for diversity.)
popa_bar_abbaParticipantRegarding runaways, it’s actually quite pashut. See Devarim 23:16.
It isn’t. I’ll explain later when it isn’t tisha b’av and I’m allowed to learn.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantslavery is TOLERATED by the Torah. no one would say you have to have slaves, and adderabah, if a slave flees you cannot go and capture him.
On the other hand, once you own them, you are not allowed to free them.
Also, your rule about recapture is highly oversimplified to the point of not being true.
July 16, 2013 8:56 pm at 8:56 pm in reply to: Which is better: a bad chavrusa or no chavrusa? #966356popa_bar_abbaParticipantIf you are right that womens’ brains cannot handle Gemara, then why are there so many female lawyers? Today, half of all law school graduates are women, and these women have to handle complex trial cases, read briefs, and argue in front of courts. Would you really say they are inferior to men as well, even though they graduate at the same rate and do the same exact tasks?
Google “shatter the ceiling harvard law” if you believe that.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWell, I wasn’t sure if I should include those ones. So I marked them optional. But then I was like: the whole point is that the whole thing is optional so you should say the ones that make you feel right. So I marked them extra, as in, extra to my list.
This list is the ones I say pretty much every year. Mostly picked because they are easier to understand, easier to relate to, and maybe poetic. A couple are just the famous ones that nobody could leave out.

if you are a girl, you have just asked yourself,”Why doesnt anyone just take him out of the stupid pit?”
I was about to ask why not just take him out. But then I was like: “Are you crazy? Maybe it’s really a sheid!!”

popa_bar_abbaParticipantI just read through that entire troll thread & I’m not responding to anything there. If you have something serious to say, say it here.
Troll thread? Where is there a troll thread? I wanna see it.
July 14, 2013 4:14 pm at 4:14 pm in reply to: Is it assur to wear a necklace with a symbol on it? #966011popa_bar_abbaParticipantI want a hallows necklace.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWell, shabbos is my catch up day. Sometimes I say that I don’t do daf yomi as much as I’m doing seven daf weekly.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantDaasYochid: Did you even look at Pesochim 74B?
I’ll look at it in about 7 weeks
popa_bar_abbaParticipantpopa_bar_abbaParticipantOk. Here’s how it goes down.
Zimmerman is scared that Martin family will sue him. Because then they only have to prove that it is more likely than not that he was wrong.
But Zimmerman has no money. So why would they sue him. Well, he can get a book deal, and he is suing NBC for defamation for doctoring the tape.
So Zimmerman holds off on the book deal until after the Statute of limitations. And also holds off on the defamation suit until after the statute of limitations (because there is a few days between when that runs on him, and when the Martin’s claim runs on them).
So the Martins sue anyway, and they get a judgment, and then they get the right to sue NBC on his behalf (do they? I don’t know, maybe, why not).
So then the Martins sue NBC on zimmermans behalf claiming that they defamed him. lolol
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThank G-d.

I’m not taking an opinion on whether it is muttar or assur to raise foie gras geese. And I have no idea of ??? ??? ???? ?????, lol.
I’m just amazed that all of a sudden he’s found something where he thinks halacha should be mandatory on Israeli society.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI agree that foie gras is halachically problematic, but there are mattirim. Ma shein kein driving buses on Shabbos.
Yes indeed. All of a sudden, Lipman wants to force halacha on the country.
The guy is unbelievable. Just wow.

popa_bar_abbaParticipantI always pace.
If you don’t like it, daven at home.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantTHe problem as I see it, each perspective has a narrative. If you think Z should get no punishment or that he even should have been arrested, this is because you buy into his exact version, that he was for no reason attacked with a severity which made him decide that he must kill or be killed.
Inaccurate. It doesn’t mean I buy into his version–it just means I am not sure beyond reasonable doubt that his version is wrong.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI would respond by laughing. It completely misses the entire issue.
July 11, 2013 5:43 pm at 5:43 pm in reply to: Appropriate outdoor activities for the Nine Days #965039popa_bar_abbaParticipantmusser: I don’t think that being a tinok shenishba is inconsistent with being a kofer.
I think that is the whole point–that someone can be a kofer but can be excused because they are a tinok shenishba.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantToi:
I have a pircha on your proof. That dressing tznius is very open and obvious while shmiras einayim is much less so.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI use my yarlmuke. An added benefit is that I don’t make a chillul Hashem when I cut everyone off by the battery tunnel.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantMy main point here is that Zimmerman is not faultless, he is not guilty of second degree murder but his conscious should not be clear.
Well, I don’t even know if that is true. I mean, it might be true, depending on how the story went down. But if the story really is as he says that he was going back to his car and Martin jumped him and then punched him in the nose and then got on top and started pummeling him into the sidewalk saying “you’re going to die tonight”–well then, I think his conscience should be pretty clear.
See, the whole problem here is that we really know very little about what happened that night. I’m not convinced he is innocent, if the standard was guilty until proven innocent, he would certainly be not innocent. But in court, the standard is innocent until proven guilty, so he is not guilty.
And in the court of my boich, the standard is that if I have no idea what happened, I pretty much just back out of it.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe word “ch…..” needs to be retired.
I never used to self-describe as chareidi, until the past year or two. But I’m happy to wear it; I’m happy to affiliate as chareidi.
Ich bin chareidi.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantOf course not.
If he’s offering 2 million, he obviously knows I won.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantPizza.
1. Call pizza shop.
2. Order pizza.
3. Eat pizza.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantDon’t file a civil lawsuit before the criminal trial is over. It will make it look like you are just out to get money.
Go to the police. Talk to yanky horowitz, talk to the other molester catchers.
popa_bar_abbaParticipant???? ??? ? ?????? ?? ????
popa_bar_abbaParticipantPresent day hatred of Zionism is not going to flip a single Jew from non observance to observance. It only creates a Mechitatz Barzel – a steel wall of hatred that blocks secular Israelis from possibly returning to observance.
I don’t know why that would be. Chilonim are not zionist.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantIt’s just that my kids will speak three languages fluently by 18 months, will be toilet trained by 6 months, and will not be scared of sippy cups.
mine will speak 4 languages by 17 months, be toilet trained by 5 months. But will be scared of sippy cups.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantmorahrach:
I think if you go back and look at the story I was responding to, you’ll understand my comments differently.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantFor the record, it’s not my baby.
Misbehaved that bad, huh?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI don’t think any legitimate therapist would claim to be able to cure someone in a limited number of sessions. What they might say is that you may see results in given number and of sessions.
but that’s what they claim.
It’s ridiculous to say that Noone can suffer from just depression or just anxiety. Take a look at the DSM. The criteria for depression is wildly different.
No, it’s ridiculous to say that you’ve ever met someone who has one but not the other.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantpopa- at last, we know where you stand. No wonder that you never find any fault with extreme chareidi positions.
lolwut
I didn’t say anything.
Do you typically read this much into what people don’t say? Maybe all that stuff you criticize us for is all just made up in your head.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantCould you provide evidence that CBT is “garbage” and that the studies are “junk science”?
It’s garbage because it is like any other quick cure scheme. Go find someone who was cured in 10 sessions or whatever they promise. I’d like to meet him.
The studies are junk science, because they use people who are only suffering from one thing. Like depression, but not anxiety. Such people don’t exist in the real world, and using them is not responsible science.
But the kicker is that the CBT practitioners themselves go to regular therapy instead of CBT.

popa_bar_abbaParticipantIt comes from the name of a bug with many legs.

popa_bar_abbaParticipantHave you ever heard of cognitive behavioral therapy? It has a success rate that rivals that of medication. If you google “Comparative Effectiveness of Medication Versus Cognitive-Behavioral
Therapy in a Randomized Controlled Trial of Low-Income Young Minority
Women With Depression”, you will find an excellent study showing the success of CBT.
CBT is garbage, and those studies are junk science.
Indeed, it works just as much as medication. lol
popa_bar_abbaParticipantSam2, my husband has a close friend who is very frum and has an attraction to both genders that is making him miserable. He wants his homosexual attraction to just go away, but so far he has been unsuccessful. He is in his late twenties and refuses shidduchim, because he doesn’t think it is fair to any woman for him to marry her and still have these thoughts about men. It has driven him into a deep depression such that it is even difficult for him to hold down a job. He hates himself. I so wish there was something we could do for him.
That sounds really horrible.
But I’m not sure I get why he doesn’t just marry a woman. So he’ll desire other men–but to no greater an extent than all married men can also desire other women. Why is his situation so different than all men?
Is it any different than if I like pizza and he likes pizza and also hamburgers, but each of us can still only eat once?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantHowever, I have a very hard time believing that it is literally impossible for them to change. There are very few things that one simply cannot change about themselves.
Do you think that with therapy you could become gay?
