Dal94: Some of the very early Sefardic philosophers (late Geonim) thought that reciprocity was the first and foremost natural law.

Don’t use either. It gives way too many people unlimited access to anything you use it for, ever. You don’t want your whole life in the hands of people. And while people trust Google now (at least, trust them to only care to make themselves money and not mess people up), you never know who will get that info later.

Abe Cohen: When there is a legitimate, unbiased, inherently fair way to judge intelligence then I’ll completely agree that there’s nothing wrong with saying it on average, which really has nothing to do with any individuals anyway.

I don’t get the question. It’s not Assur to speak while wearing Tefillin. It is Assur to speak in between putting on the Shel Yad and Shel Rosh.

Honestly, I would mention this to a Rav well-versed in Kaballah. Even if there is a natural explanation each time for it, it happening to you twice in two different places should have some deeper meaning.

Mods, can we please close this thread? Not because it’s not a legitimate question, but because this thread will take the following trajectory:

    1) Someone will see a perceived attack on Touro’s academics and feel the need to defend it.

    2) Someone will see a defense of Touro’s academics and feel the need to attack it.

    3) Someone will see an attack on Touro and feel the need to attack YU in response.

    4) A pro-YU/anti-YU flame war will commence.

    5) In the middle of said flame war, random people will enter and talk about how this undefinable “Modern Orthodoxy” is the root of all evil.

    6) Said flame war will continue until you mods get bored of it and close the thread.

So, why don’t we all save some time, read the last flame war thread, and just close this one now?

Health: There is no Chiyuv on Erev Yom Tov. Erev Yom Kippur is more of an issue, but one with an ear problem probably constitutes a Choleh for this and can be Yotzei with a shower (Shifchas 9 Kabim). He should make sure that the water in the shower touches every single part of his body though, including inside of joints (like armpits) and the bottom of his feet.

The IQ test until very recently was entirely irrelevant. The early IQ tests did not judge intelligence. “What is Smith & Wesson a popular brand of?” was a question on the original IQ test.

I never said the M”B doesn’t say you need a hat. I said that he never says you need a double covering. Which he doesn’t. The statement that the M”B says that a double covering is necessary is a Ziyuf Shel Halachah that has been spread throughout the masses.

Yitay should have said “should not”, not “cannot”. Even in a Tzibbur, it’s only okay B’dieved. Tirchah D’tzibburah makes it a Sha’as Had’chak which is Kib’dieved.

Patri: That is a gross lie. Find me where the Mishnah B’rurah says it. You can’t. It’s not in there. People quote the Mishnah B’rurah as saying it but it’s not in there anywhere whatsoever. People also misquote the Zohar brought down in M”B 91:2 as saying it. But actually read it. That’s not at all what he says.

Toi: We consider just being in a cemetery as an act of being actively M’tamei. And in your scenario with the Kohen it’s different because that’s a Meis that he can be M’tamei to, Mah She’ein Kein Hacha. If there was a Meis Mitzvah in the house, then maybe she wouldn’t have to leave for a second Meis in the house. But not just if she was already being M’tamei.

I once heard someone theorize that Jews are smarter on average because of natural selection. It was always the best and brightest who married the richest girls (so they could continue learning) and had the most and healthiest kids. Therefore, the average intelligence goes up over time. It’s an interesting theory, at the very least.

Toi: The Mechaber and Rama both Pasken that the Kohanim need to have their burial spots at the end of the cemetery. The Rama explains because even though the Kohanim can go through Tumah to bury them, they can’t go through the cemetery on the way out. If what you’re saying is true then there’s no reason they can’t leave the cemetery the long way once the relative is buried.

There is no way to understand this. Sometimes it means HKBH had a specific plan which involved this child only living 13 years. Sometimes it’s as simple and horrible as that the kid didn’t look before crossing the street and didn’t see the bus. There’s no way for us to know.

I believe the Chizkuni (I think) says that the whole first 11 Perakim of B’reishis are all Derech Mashal. Now, no one seems to hold like this Chizkuni but I wonder if relying on it makes on n Apikores?

I don’t see a problem with this legislation in theory. If the residents of a country are prone to making terrible, life-affecting decisions then it’s great if the government tries to protect its citizens. Outlawing super-fatty foods is no different, in essence, than outlawing recreational drugs. That being said, some of this seems a bit overboard.

Loyal Jew: You say that’s the case, and maybe it’s the case for some people, but I don’t know if it’s true for everyone. It certainly shouldn’t be true. What if I really wanted to make a different “Hashkafic statement” (whatever that means) but after learning the relevant sources feel there is no way not to say Hallel on Yom Ha’atzma’ut? Lu Yetzuyar such a person existed, what would you tell him?

(I’m ignoring the other insinuations of your post because they’re just silly and pointless, but at this point expected.)

Far east: Rav Moshe has a Tshuvah about wearing a Kippah when going to (either a bar, a dance club, or a movie theater, I don’t remember, but some place you shouldn’t be) because of Chillul Hashem. He says why add a second improper thing onto the first. And yes, I can see that you might be able to be Mechalek here but the basic principle should still apply.

On the ball: There are many ways to say that believing in an old world isn’t K’fira. It’s certainly not a belief that most (or all) Frum Jews hold by, but there are sources to rely on to not be a Kofer if you believe in it.

Shatnez is a correct answer. The only answer, I believe, as to when she is specifically allowed to leave her house in such a condition is if she is a Nezirah and there is a Meis in the house.
