apushatayid – you are right, the fluffy slippers will not pose a problem, which is why silliness is not the problem here. The purim story tape adds much of that same type of silliness.

I haven’t seen the lester movie so I cannot bring examples from there, but I know that seeing the portrayal of the subtle things does paint pictures in your mind. Why do you think so many frum yidden believe that the luchos were a single grey stone with arched tops? Or why the Teivah is so often drawn as that boat looking thing with the little shack top. I know I learned inside the chumash that there were 7 of each of the kosher animals, but as a kid I still thought there were two of each, just like the songs and pictures and books always portray.

Those are the types of inaccuracies I, myself, am referring to, and if you spend enough time with kids, you find out that what they hold on to may be very different from what you, as a writer, would have expected. So I try to concern myself with what they will most likely hear, instead of what the writer intended.

One of my sons bought a whole bunch of spray paint a couple Purims ago because they needed to paint something for the mesiba and some props for their costumes. I think I only found out about it because in Chicago it isn’t easy to purchase spray paint without taking a drug test . . .

as far as I know the nicotine is not the carcinogen (I think the tar is?) but rather the addictive ingredient. Either way I got the impression that it has been found that e cigs are not safer. If I can find the article I read that in I will quote it.

jbaldy, I never knew he ran it past his rabbonim, I just heard that someone said they thought he did. And I don’t have a problem with it if he indeed did so. But I still would not take those risks with my kids, and I disagree that this derech has brought risks. I will say, however, that I had no intention of implying this was a hashkofa I expect others to follow, it is just my mehalach. I only brought it out because I felt others were saying there were NO risks. If you tell me you are giving underaged kids booze, I will say you are doing wrong, in this specific situation I feel it is not healthy, but I also feel it is your choice. I don’t know if that makes sense or not, it is easier to explain IRL when you can see it in context.

as an aside, I wasn’t responding to a letter by rabbonim, I haven’t read it and didn’t even know about it. I have always made a habit of looking into the stuff that comes into my kids brains (when it is my choice), just being jewish doesn’t mean it’s okay, and being “secular” doesn’t rule it out.

jbaldy – Rabbi Zucker didn’t sit and listen to the Purim story tapes either, I remember being told he diligently reviewed the scripts. When something involves the chinuch of our children, you would be surprised what people are willing to do to make things safe (well, lets just say SOME people)

    3) Made up stories are supposed to be entertaining, not make sense

made up stories that are distortions of true torah stories may not be healthy for children. If there is even a 20% chance that it is unhealthy, isn’t that enough for you? I personall try very hard not to take chances like that with my kids spirituality. But feel free not to listen, “everyone else is doing it and they turned out just fine”.

Goq – it asks for very little sugar actually. And I don’t see why sugar free pudding should be a problem, it is really for the texture more than the taste. I have the recipe saved on my computer so I am pretty sure it was googled from somewhere. I used rice milk (or was it soy?) for the pudding, and I made it without any frosting.

Here is a cut and paste:

**top of page has really yummy looking cinnamon roll**

    Cinnabon rolls

    ROLLS:

    1/2 cup warm water

    2 packages dry yeast

    2 Tbl. sugar

3 1/2 oz. pkg. vanilla pudding mix

    2 eggs

    1 teas. salt

    6 cups flour

    CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:

    8 oz cream cheese

    1/2 cup margarine

    1 teas. vanilla

    1 Tbl. milk

To make frosting, mix all ingredients until smooth.

In a bowl combine water, yeast and sugar. Stir until dissolved. Set aside.

In large bowl, take pudding mix and prepare according to package

directions. Add margarine, eggs and salt. Mix well. Then add yeast

    mixture. Blend.

Gradually add flour; knead until smooth. Place in a greased

bowl. Cover and let rise until doubled.

Punch down dough and let rise again.

cup soft butter and spread over surface. In bowl, mix 2 cups brown sugar

and 4 teas. cinnamon. Sprinkle over top. Roll up very tightly.

Take hand and lightly press down on each roll.

Cover and let rise until double

again. Bake at 350 15-20 minutes. Remove when they start to turn golden.

Frost warm rolls with Cream Cheese Frosting

Makes about 20 very large rolls.

garlic bread sticks for breaking the fast. I also found a new recipe. I try to make cinnamon rolls for breaking the fasts and this time I found a ‘cinnabon’ recipe. It calls for vanilla pudding in the dough and it was REALLY good. It made the dough so soft even after they cooled off.

see, and that was what I was afraid of. And now I am even more afraid because many people will a) watch it anyway or b) bad mouth the people who banned it

I do find it hard to believe that they didn’t think about the importance of looking into that while putting it together.

I’m curious what your reactions would be if someone would suggest that the reason the D’L want charedim to be drafted is so that they’ll die in war. Would you say it’s true (with a disclaimer that it should have been said a bit nicer)?)

that’s plain ridiculous. The chereidim are being asked to JOIN them at the front, not go out there themselves.

play no games – Stand strong! I did the same as you and it was not easy! There were so many times that it would have been great to have a video babysit the kids but I pushed myself and I am so glad I did.

My oldest is 20, youngest is 6 and I have the hindsight to say that it was worth every drop of sweat for just the reasons you say. And you know what the hardest part was? It was how my friends who wanted to limit videos couldn’t keep it up after so many years and they would give me such a hard time. I had a few people tell me the thought it was great that I was able to do this for my kids, and some told me how sorry they were for opening pandoras box because it evolved into more than they had wanted, but some friends were just mean. They felt it was important to let me know that there was no value in my mehalach and what could be so wrong with videos anyway. They put a lot of pressure on me to doubt myself and it was hard.

But I see the difference and it is really worth it if you really believe in it and can present it appropriately. The 2D presentation really does zombie them out and, honestly, not just while they sit there but for a while afterwards. If you think you can take on the challenge, I wish you the koach to succeed!

but who am I to assume I’ll be “better” or whatever than my parents?

As someone who is probably closer to your parents age than yours I can tell you that if TV, movies or books were then what they are now, your parents wouldn’t have plopped you in front of them. I grew up with a TV in almost every room, and my brothers would watch all the time. As soon as the shows got a bit less appropriate, and we were older by then, my dad started making rules about what we watched. You probably also are too young to remember (or know) that there were only a handful of channels and kids shows were only on for a certain period of the day. To say that your parents let you watch all the time as a basis for allowing kids to do so is comparing apples to kiwi.

I don’t think the problem with movies, TV, etc in the frum community was ever really with the idea of sitting and watching; I think it was more with the content, and the fact that kids weren’t staring stupefied at screens all day was just a convenient plus.

I don’t think this is true at all

    I turned out basically fine,

no offense, I’m sure you are fine, but that is a lame argument for anything. Smokers use it all the time. So do people who don’t wear seat belts, don’t eat healthy, don’t daven with a minyan etc. Maybe you were just exceedingly fortunate.

Al100- you are so right. i think that that is the unfortunate reason that tragedy befalls us so often. Not necessarily because we deserve punishment, but because it seems to be one of the most effective ways to wake us up R”L. Perhaps we can go out of our ways this Purim and cross political and hashkofic boundaries in a simchadik way to show Hashem it can be done!

(and tho I love many of this threads posters, those posts are a real slight to the OP’s point)

oomis – screen time (2D time) actually IS bad for kids, not because of the content as much as the developmental issues. If you look into it you will find it is absolutely not recommended for kids under 36 months (if I am recalling correctly). It is a problem on many levels in regard to brain development (or lack there of), the sedentary nature of the body, the lack of range of eye movement and it does have a potentially addictive quality in many kids, even though people would like to believe it doesn’t.

Not policing here, just letting you know what’s out there.

OCbachur – I have to say it always amazes me how many of the posters here are so frum when it comes to defending Torah and standing up to those whom they believe distort it, but they seem to be so lacking when it comes to their emunah and bitachon in Hashem and their belief that he is present in their every moment.

You want to start dating when you are in college? you want to wait until you are rich? you want to date during your last semester? It doesn’t matter, date when you feel you are ready to be looking for someone with whom you can build a bayis neeman. Hashem will “worry” about when you actually find them.

My mother used to solicit donations from some very frum yidden to support other yidden. Many of these bnei Torah had a very difficult time giving my mother money for people to use toward fertility treatments. Their problem was that if these people didn’t have money for treatments, how could they have money to raise a child. From a Gd fearing Jew, to get such a response!

My mother would tell them that often the baby comes first and then the money to support it. And only as much as Hashem decides to give them. And that had proved itself over and over. These are not your cheshbonos to make.

Sinus pressure can cause pretty bad tooth pain but it is usually a little bit different from a bad tooth. (per experience and dentist) it will be a top tooth (they share a nerve with the sinus) on the same side that is stuffed, and it will often hurt if you tap it or bend over. I can usually tell when my awful tooth pain is sinus related but a couple times my daughter has been in horrific pain and we had trouble determining which was the culprit.

streekgeek – I vote for the sinus’. I get this all the time, as do two of my kids, and it just doesn’t go away. The neti pot is an awesome solution but if it starts getting painful it probably means it is not just “stuffed” but getting infected, antibiotics is the only thing that works for us. We (collectively) can’t do the “pour things up your nose” treatments, so we just pray a lot that it will go away before the infection sets in.
