we travel separately sometimes. my parents in 1 car with some of the kids and myself driving the other car with the rest of the kids. this way, those who need to leave earlier can do so and b/c we are not squished in 1 car/van, there are less fights.

in reply to: Older Siblings More Ruchniyosdik Than Younger Siblings #862326

i’m an oldest and i am more frum than my siblings but not from closeness to my parents. it was a conscience decision to be different than my parents and i made changes (and making changes) to the i live and think so i DONT bring habits and practices from my parents into my home when IY”H i get married.

my father thinks i’m close to him, but in actuality, i don’t hold his opinion as high as he thinks i do. the family dynamics are very complicated but my trust in my parents has been eaten away and chipped off after they lied to me about certain things and breaking promises once too many times.

the reason i’m as frum as i am is because i dont want to be my parents. my father knows i’m frummer than my siblings but he also knows, i gave up trying to influence them. it only causes issues. if he wants to help them, he should do it. i’m going to do what i’m doing for ME only, for my ruchnius and to save my sanity in my messed up family

in reply to: English Names #847495

i use my english name in school because all of my legal documents are under my legal-english name. i use my english name for simplicities sake. if a piece of paper has my hebrew name, i can blame it on a typo. but to have to change all my legal papers to my hebrew name? forget it. i’m not ashamed of my hebrew name, CH”V. some of my non-jewish classmates noticed my email comes up as my hebrew name. so in emails they call me my hebrew name but f2f they use my english name.

    Hi BTguy,

just wanted to let you know I got my grade back on my essay on the virtue of ethics. i got 4/4 possible points. the only comment i got was “good”.

right now i’m reading about Hobbes social contract theory. its an interesting idea. the book is discussing benevolent persons vs egoists and how society would play out, which side would get more benefit depending on which side a person falls on. kind of reminds me of whats mine is mine, whats yours is yours, whats mine is yours and whats yours is mine, etc. the prisoner dilemma actually made alot of sense. next up is pros/cons of social contract theory.

Kant is next on the agenda. i got behind in my reading so i have to catch up to the class before i can get to him.

(i’m actually a little excited to read it. kind of a turn around from the beginning of the course)

i just have to say thank you again. part of my success is from you so i think you should enjoy my mark as well.

Hi BTguy and a gutt voche.

i have to be honest. you are part of the reason i worked this hard. knowing someone was cheering me on helped alot. i’m sending you a big heartfelt thank you right now (via the cr of course). the essay that was supposed to be 2 pages is just over 4 pages and i think very good. i hope my prof agrees. i did have to take many breaks in the process just to keep my brain cells from frying but i finally finished it and emailed it to him so i have Sunday free. you are correct, i do feel very proud and accomplished i taught myself something i thought i would never understand to the point i wrote my essay. (you should also shep nachas. your encouragement was a large reason i was able to finish)

the class is getting a little better now since i know i can actually understand it. the virtue theory was very interesting in the end. still trying to figure out if and where it fits into yiddishkeit. (i do this with all classes. when i took anatomy in HS i used it to understand why the bracha of asher yatzar was important, i used art to appreciate to beauty of H’s world, culinary arts to appreciate the food etc)

i’m taking this course as a prereq for another degree. i’m being vague on purpose, i do apologize. its a normative ethics class, with a focus on bioethics.

the next two weeks we are going to be focusing on Kantian ethics and theories. and i’m ready to see what else i can take from this portion.

    and once again THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

    in reply to: ethics #846876

    Hi BTguy,

i just finished writing my essay (yay) and now i’m typing it up. its on the virtue of ethics theory and we had to show the advantages and incompleteness of the theory. i’m actually proud of myself i understood the chapter. it was hard keeping my yiddish ideas out of it but i’m rather pleased with the end result. hopefully the prof likes it too.

i read each section like 5 times until i got it so i think i figured out how to get through this course. some of the things i heard before (like saying s/t true in a deceptive way) but the rest is taking lots of brain power. but i’m getting through it so thats the important thing i guess

    in reply to: ethics #846872

oneofmany, i’m saying 15 weeks won’t give anyone enough depth to change. and how much can be learned in 15 weeks that is practical? i mean most of my class is just learning the dif theories and stuff. nothing modern

in reply to: Anti Virus Anyone? #844533

CA, that was one of my sem teacher’s fave lines! lol actually having a sem ‘reunion’ tonight (wedding) 🙂 thanx for the flashback to fun times

    in reply to: ethics #846870

yitayningwut,ya something like that. after this break ive got a essay on the virtue of ethics to write…

sam4321, Nechomah that’s part of my problem. well its not a problem, its just a hindrance in this class. all of my morals and ethics are viewed from a Torah stand point.

dvorak, i’m talking about in the outside world. yes there is teshuva but a one semester class is not going to change a person so drastically (imo). the rest is why i have an issue with class. is all black and white, no grey area. after reading just the introduction chapter of some famous medical ethical issues, my first thought was, “if i ever CH”V ever had a medical dilema, first thing i would do is ask a Rav”.

aries, i agree with your entire post. this may contradict my OP but i really do. but learning ethics and morals so that they are permanent parts of a person’s life takes lots of might and learning. one semester in college imo will not change a person’s life. it seems this class is just teaching morals belong here here and here but don’t say how to use them

    cpno, no not brooklyn college

Hi btguy, yes once a person is educated in ethics… educated being the key word. 15 weeks is not an education. this week’s ppt is on Rousseau. his theories i’m starting to understand. i have to read the slides and book a few times more but that will have to wait until next week after i finish the above mentioned essay. i’m gonna have to stick with this course so i can get a good grade and raise my gpa. i may end up not hating the class but it might be stretching it to say i may enjoy it. but i may take you up for feedback.

thanx e/o. i feel a little better now.

MP, thank you for posting. all of your posts show you are a sensitive and exceptional person and this post is a perfect example. your post sums up my feelings exactly! the atmosphere here in the CR for the past few weeks has been one i have not seen in the time I’ve been reading and posting here in the CR. and its not one that will keep posters posting. my impression of AYC is still the same. the void left is large IMO. i always enjoyed his posts and i will miss him/her.

my suggestion? close the CR for a bit so people can take a breather from the CR, look at the whole situation from a step back and then come back free of the negativity.

in reply to: Do you wear Tommy Hillfiger??? #826860

growing up, my parents never let me or my siblings buy TH. now i read snopes and know not true (supposedly), i can make my own decisions. being that i never needed TH and B”H i find clothing that looks just as great and is my style, why should i go and buy TH just for the symbol? (i dont get the whole label business. i dont own juicy, prada, lacoste etc. i own 1 RL shirt-and its a pajama. do ppl really need to wear clothes with labels to walk in public??? sorry for the rant but designer clothes baffle me)

in reply to: corelle dishes #826846

Thanx E/o! i just looked at walmart and they have quite a selection. will look at amazon and kmart next. then i have to show my mom to see what she thinks. just out of curiosity, how long does corelle last? is it really fade resistant as they say?

in reply to: corelle dishes #826843

Thanx everyone for the suggestions. I live in nj so the bp options don’t really work. Beside walmart and bbb do any other stores sell corelle? My hope is to find a black Friday sale and get it really cheap. Thanx again!

in reply to: Math Question #826376

Pythagorean theorem is A squared + B squared = C squared. its used for right triangles IIRC

example: a right triangle with 3 sides, one side is 3″, one is 4″ and the longest is 5″.

    3*3 + 4*4 = 5*5

    9+16=25

    25=25

(i took geometry a long time ago. this correct? LOL)

in reply to: Buying A New Camera – Suggestions Please #826334

GB, where did u see this camera? i’ve been looking for a YEAR to replace mine.

in reply to: Buying A New Camera – Suggestions Please #826318

canon. i had the sd450 for 4 years. my dad has a newish gen rebel 15 mp. i like the SD line of canon but the AS line runs a little cheaper than the SD line. SD line is rechargeable Li-on battery and mine lasted 4 years. the AS line uses AA batteries so its a trade off between price and batteries really IMHO. hatzlachoh with finding a camera.

    in reply to: college='OTD' #825705

    k i know this has n/t to do w/ the topic but……

e/time i see the thread title i get kinda insulted. i’m in my second year of college and seen/heard lots of stuff (flirty guys, talkative frum men, men with language issues, women who didnt get dressed…).that doesnt mean i am any less frum than when i started college. have i changed? yes i’m not denying that. has college strengthened some areas of yiddishkeit for me? yes it has. yet for some reason the thread title is a slap in the face accusing people who go for higher education that we are not frum enough. can the mods please change the thread name to s/t less accusing? thanx,

    sincerely, a sensitive college student

in reply to: makes me sick #825586

Thanx B_H for the advice. i think after this incident i’ll make sure to stay even further than i had for the regular tznius distance i kept

in reply to: makes me sick #825584

Just to follow up on the OP. we got our test marks back at the end of class at the end of the week. This frum guy was in the seat next to me ( origanally I moved over a seat before class when I saw his stuff next to mine but he moved his seat again and when I returned to the classroom there were no othr seats left to move to so I was stuck) and when the teacher announced we were getting our marks back he started using the same language as he had previously. I said to him “can you please watch your language?”. He didn’t answer me and when he got his test mark back he continued in the same manner as before.

Besides for being more aggressive to stay away from this person, what else should I do? We have a group project in 2 weeks and we are both part of the same group. How do I keep this from negatively influencing me?

in reply to: Surgically created blue eyes and shidduchim #1088458

bpt, i dont conform to most social “musts”. for example, i rarely dress as though i am going to a funeral. jewel tones are way more up my ally. and of course its easy! whats easier than being yourself? why waste the brain power to be a faker? its totally not worth it.

in reply to: You know you spend too much time in the CR when #1197304

42, between this tread and the no longer yeshiva bachur thread I was laughing so hard coffee went up my nose. Thanx for a great laugh 645 in the morn!

in reply to: is everyone in the coffee room fat?? #825282

skinny or healthy weight? theres a big difference (no pun intended). but whats the point of you question?

in reply to: Surgically created blue eyes and shidduchim #1088452

BPT, get to work on what exactly????? (foncused look on my face right now)

in reply to: Surgically created blue eyes and shidduchim #1088448

LOL bpt. i think i’m gonna keep my flats. i just spent about 8 hours on my feet today running literally the entire time. and malanos are not in my student budget. 🙂

in reply to: Surgically created blue eyes and shidduchim #1088439

2cebts, if u were addressing me, the entire post was sarcastic. Including my physical description. I was saying ppl are putting too much emphasis on the physical.

in reply to: Surgically created blue eyes and shidduchim #1088428

oh great. now i’m gonna have an even harder time shidduch. not only am i short, have a few pounds to lose, not 19 anymore, likes to wear flats on occasion, i also have hazel eyes. i guess brains dont count anymore. oh well (grand sigh as i go to sulk in the corner) (this post is dripping with sarcasm if you didn’t catch it earlier)

in reply to: What should i tell her???? #825440

when she ‘grow up’ and reality hits her in the face, how is she going to react? is she going to say oh wow that was childish of me or will she get really depressed when her dreams aren’t actualized. broken dreams can be dangerous. i suggest helping her now even though i cant give you an idea how to break her fantasies. Hatzlacha in what ever you decide what to do

in reply to: Favorite breakfast #825329

coffee. what else? and a danish if i buy one

in reply to: makes me sick #825576

Bpt: yes the op is real. It really happened. And yes it was disgusting

ZK: thank you. IY”H the language won’t affect me

6h that’s interesting. Never heard ofthat.

Onegoal b”h I’m still sensitive to it. But it’s not from how I was raised rather a conscious decision to watch my language in that respect. I have insulted siblings b/c I have told them to watch thier language. I try to avoid even saying stupid. It’s not an easy thing and hearing Jews talk like that really hurts

in reply to: makes me sick #825570

onegoal, that was uncalled for. if i lose the lunch i just ate, i will blame it one

in reply to: Why do we say good shabbos #824271

hey guys. thanx for your answers. my sister asked my this q like 5x on the way home from a friend and “because” was not a good enough answer. (and of course she has perfect timing and asked 1x as a group of 8-9 bachrim passed by and heard me say “we say GS b/c its nice to do” and B”H these bachrim were mencshin and said GS to us so i didnt look like a hypocrite 🙂 )

now the hard part is gonna get this all to a 5 y/o level….

    A GUT VOCH E/O!!!

in reply to: Why do we say good shabbos #824261

i said good shabbos to s/o we passed as we were walking and she asked why i said good shabbos. and i told her we do b/c its nice. but why do we wish good shabbos when we pass ppl?
