WolfishMusingsParticipant
Yeah, I know it’s a bit ad hominem — but considering this is coming from a high schooler, I’m not surprised at all. 🙂
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantWolf: Since the doer knows the Machmir Shitta, and chooses not to follow it, I can see a Rov saying it is a Maizid, since the doer should have known better.
Holding a more lenient opinion = being mechalel Shabbos B’Mayzid?! That’s quite a stretch there.
Do you hold of every machmir opinion in the world? If not, are you transgressing aveiros b’mayzid?
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantif you saw a person on the street that was a total stranger lying on the floor unconsious would you do cpr on them?
The former EMT in me says, absolutely, yes. As AYC mentioned above, there are disposable barriers that you can use and, if you have them on hand, I would recommend using them. But if I didn’t have one, I’d still do it.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipant@ wolf, aries – so ill translate. I have a bunch of friends who are going to seminary and i dont know what to get them. Can’t be anything typical and I don’t have too many pictures, so I’m kind o stuck. Any ideas?
Thank you.
seriously u dont know textspeak?
Seriously, you don’t know when it’s appropriate to use “textspeak” and when it’s not?
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantWolf, I’m aware of that, but I don’t see why they need to lose their first names as well as their last.
They don’t “lose” their first name. I’m sure William still calls her “Kate” (or whatever he was calling her). It’s just the formal convention that is only used in certain circumstances.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantAll Jews have a chelek in Olam Haba -look at Pirkei Avos.
NOT all Jews have a chelek in Olam Habah — look at the Mishna in Sanhedrin, which is the original source for the quote from Pirkei Avos.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantPlease…
… if you’re going to ask for help, at least do so in something resembling proper English.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantAssuming you’re talking about insurance, it’s not a matter of what you “like” better — it’s a matter of what’s the better product for your individual needs.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantI just wonder why she has to lose her first name in the title.
Princesses by marriage in the UK are known by their husbands’ names.
Another example is Princess Michael of Kent.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipanttherefore it only makes sense that he would marry into royalty. Or if not royalty there has to be some reason why he chose her out of the whole England
He married her because he met her in college and they fell in love. That’s really all there is to it.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipant‘??? ????? ??? ???’. chariots are ancient, carriages are just more modern chariots,
I am well aware that chariots are ancient. And no, carriages are NOT “more modern chariots.” They are two completely different types of vehicles used for two very different purposes. The fact that both are pulled by horses does NOT make them similar at all.
Saying that a carriage is a “more modern chariot” is like saying that a tractor is a “large car” since they both have motors.
And I don’t think anyone in ancient times would have considered bringing a bride to her chuppah in a chariot.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantnot clear if it was a carriage or a sedan chair
The latter sounds far more likely. I don’t think that carriages (as they are popularly envisioned) were around then.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantmaybe we should start a trend to drive the Chassan abnd Kallah to the Chasuna in carriages as they used to do in Yerushalayim in the good old days when we had the Bais Hamikdash
Source?
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantSimilarly, if you hold opening a bottle cap on shabbos is a melacha, if someone else opens it, that is as far as you are concerned that is Melecha. Whether you can use it or not depends if you define the doer as a shoggeg or Maizid
Given that the classic two examples of Shogeg (WRT Shabbos) are:
1. The person didn’t know it was Shabbos (i.e. they thought it was Friday)
2. The person thought the activity was permitted on Shabbos
… how can you say that the doer is anything BUT a shogeg, when they clearly fall into the second category.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantI’ve also heard something about it being assur to build muscles on Shabbos since it’s boneh. Not sure how reliable that is and I can’t remember the source.
I don’t believe that to be correct. By the same token you shouldn’t be allowed to do anything, since any muscle movement that involves resistence (such as walking, or lifting a book) builds muscles. Likewise, you shouldn’t be able to eat since your body breaks down (“soser”) the molecules of the food.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantWOLF- its the same thing with a mother- by the time you are old enough to appreciate what she did for you, you have a child of your own to take care of
I have absolutely no doubt that that’s true (at least it’s my experience). I was just quoting the Twain quote… and he spoke about fathers and sons.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantIf you’re looking for a clear-cut p’sak halacha (as opposed to our collective opinion), then why not just ask a rav?
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantWhen I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years. ~Mark Twain, “Old Times on the Mississippi” Atlantic Monthly, 1874
One of my favorite quotes is a Twain quote along the same lines. Furthermore, now that I am the father of three teenagers, I appreciate it much more. The quote is:
By the time a man realizes that his father was right, he has a son who thinks he’s wrong.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipanti was told, bsheym Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky zatzal, that the source for lighting one candle per child is that it used to be that after childbirth every mother was in the hospital for a minmiumum 10 days. Hence they always missed a Friday night candle lighting.
Two questions:
1. Did R’ Ya’akov hold that if a woman missed candle lighting completely b’ones that she has to light an additional candle — even if the husband lit for her at home?
2. Wouldn’t a minimum 10-day stay in the hospital (health workers — was that really true for routine childbirths??), shouldn’t at least some women have to light TWO additional candles (since they’d be in the hospital for two consecutive Friday nights)?
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantI’m thirty-somethingteen.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantI have a personal rule. The only time I ask someone to do something for me that I won’t do myself is when I can’t do it for physical or skill-related reasons. I would otherwise never ask someone to do something that I would not be willing to do myself.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantno shadchan?
really?
Really, really.
how does that work?
Very easily. Boy and girl work in summer camp as counselors. Boy meets girl on last day of camp, but don’t see each other after that. The next February, girl sees boy in library, goes over and says “hi” to him. Boy and girl go on to celebrate 20th wedding anniversary next month.
doesn’t that ruin prospects for your children?
If someone is going to be so narrow-minded as to reject my kids solely because of the way that Eeees and I met without even considering the content of their characters, then they’re better off without them.

Except that Hitler would almost certainly have termed it 1-5, not 5-1. For that matter, Osama bin Laden would probably have done so too.
Besides, what difference does it make that Hitler’s suicide was announced on May 1. He actually died on Apr 30. By the same token, it was already May 2 in Pakistan when Osama bin Laden died.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipant“matched by God”?
HKBH was our Shadchan.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantWhy does that make them entitled to such wealth, fame and celebrity status?
That’s not unique to the royalty. You can ask the same question about anyone who inherited wealth or a famous family name from their parents.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantIs it mutar to view the inside of a church?? Is it mutar to view nishuk between ish and isha?? Is it Hashakfically correct?? Will you be proud or embarrassed when the video tape after 120 years shows how you spent your time and what you looked at?? Where is our YIras Shamayim??? Where did it go??
Ignoring for the moment the question of whether what you are saying is even correct or not, what made you believe that I watched any part of the wedding?
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantbut why does everyone feel the need to watch their wedding? to analyze everything they say? They are after all just 2 people who happen to have been born into a certain family. Why the utter fascination with them?
I answered that above.
The bottom line is that if it doesn’t interest you, no one is forcing you to pay any attention. You could have ignored this entire thread if you so wished… no one forced you to come here. Just accept the fact that some people find the Royals and other celebrities fascinating and leave it at that. It shouldn’t bother you any if some people have an interest in the historical institution known as the British Monarchy.

It should be pointed out that this (filling in for ba’alei kriah during the summer) was how I got started.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantI want to know what the whole royal family’s expenses add up to per year. How many royal family members are on salary?
That’s called the Civil List. Very few Royals actually get money from the Civil List. In addition, the Queen refunds the money spent on other Royals (other than herself and the Duke of Edinburgh) to Parliament. To the best of my knowledge, the only other Royals who get civil list money are the Queen’s children, the Dukes of Kent and Gloucester and Princess Alexandra. In addition, this money doesn’t come free — they have to perform duties for the Crown.
It’s possible that Princes William and Harry also get Civil List monies (I couldn’t find out for sure one way or the other), but even if they do, the Queen reimburses Parliament for it.
The Civil List is currently fixed at 7.9m pounds, the same level it has been at for the last ten years. Keep in mind that this money doesn’t all go to Queen’s pockets. A large chunk of it goes to pay for staff associated with running the royal household. You can download a 2006 accounting of the Civil List expenditures from the Royals’ website.
In addition, keep in mind that the Civil List is going to be abolished in 2013.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantI wish to disagree with the implication that a match facilitated by a shadchan is not “matched by God”. I’m sure you didn’t mean that, I’m referring to the choice of words.
Fair enough. Perhaps “matched by God alone” would have been better.
Poor choice of words on my part. I certainly did not mean that God is absent in “man-made” shidduchim. My apologies if I gave a contrary impression.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantthe royal family has no power anymore.
That’s not entirely true, but not entirely false either. It’s a very odd situation over in the UK.
For example, every act of Parliament requires Royal Assent to become law. Without it, an act cannot become law. Interestingly enough, the last act that Edward VIII performed as king was to give his Royal Assent to His Majesty’s Abdication Act of 1936. Before he assented to it, the act could not become law.
On the other hand, no monarch has withheld Royal Assent on a law since the early 1700s — and no monarch in his/her right mind is going to do so.
There are other similar instances where the monarch technically has power but does not wield it.
all they do is use tax money to party
That’s not entirely true either. The members of the Royal Family act as a form of elite diplomatic corps. When you see Prince Charles on some Polynesian Island talking with the local bigwigs and wearing a grass skirt, that’s not a vacation. The Crown Prince is also a patron of quite a number of charities in the UK (as are other members of the Royal Family).
That’s not to say that being a Royal is the same as working in the salt mines for ten hours a day. Rank hath its privileges, I suppose. But to say that they do nothing but party at taxpayer expense is not really a fair assessment.
The Wolf
WolfishMusingsParticipantwhy is everyone so into the royal family? theyre just a bunch of people just like anyone else. Why does everyone care so much about them?
History. Pagentry. Tradition. Politics. Some of us just like that stuff. If that makes me a bad person, so be it.
