AAQ-that biograghy wasn’t produced by Artscroll.
As I said, I didn’t read the book and I don’t know the details. All I said, was that you have to contact the author first in order for it to be called toeles. Otherwise it is Lashon Hara.
Kofer-You should have written that the author of the book verified it. Even so, you did not contact him and therefore you have no right to slander him.
As for the outright disrespect of a Talmid Chacham, I never heard of this person until you started this thread and it sounds like some posters don’t even know what you’re referring to. It was probably better not to bring it up at all.
I happen to have contacted the author a number of years ago about a different book he wrote and he told me he verifies his stories.
So even if he didn’t contact the son of this person, he probably contacted someone else. So, before slandering him, find out his side of the story.
If you want a rundown of the halachos of Lahon Hara, feel free to learn Sefer Chafetz Chaim.

ZSK, as you wrote, you did not read the book and therefore you cannot criticize the book without knowing what it said. Taking the OP’s word for it is not good enough.

ZSK, my main point was not if the facts were accurate. It was if he contacted the author. One of the 7 conditions of Toeles for telling over Lashon hara is going over to the person first before telling it over.
Before spreading slander about biographies (which is absolutely not true, they publish biographies that people could learn lessons from), check out the sources first. I know from the other biographies that that particular author wrote that he does extensive research.

I did not read the book nor do I know what details you are referring to. I do know that there is a prohibition of Lashon Hara. There is absolutely no toeles in publicizing this as the 7 conditions of toeles have not been fulfilled. You can contact the author if you have a problem and not criticize the “biography” world” in general. I happen to know that the author of this particular book does extensive research when writing books.
Mods, please close up this thread.

Correction. The Lashon of the Pasuk referring to Malkus is “Arbaim Yakenu.”

The masechta is known as Maseches Makos, not Maseches Malkus. DaasYochid is correct, it’s 2 seperate words.
The Lashon of the pasuk is Ish Ki YAKEH es Chavero,” so that’s where the Masechta of Makos got its name. The name of the punishment is Malkus.

    Troll?
The username kind of gives this away. No struggling bochur would publicize this by creating a username that illustrates this point.
In case you wanted to know, filtering was cheap when it came out. More expenses to perfect them so that they were more foolproof and effective have driven the costs higher. (No, I don’t work for them. But you can pretty much figure this out by looking at how cheap the filters were when they were introduced to the frum world and and then looking at the prices now.

philosopher, I think there’s a difference between “violence” and “action.”
Many Jewish novels have a action and conflicts in there (as we all struggle in life), but by the end of the book, the conflict is usually resolved.

The former 8 minute daf by Rabbi Eli Stefansky was not a shiur that read the Gemara. It was a summary shiur made for those who had gone through the daf already and wanted chazara. He originally started the 8 minute daf shiur as a summary to the daf not to replace daf yomi but as a chazara to those who learned the daf already. Someone suggested that he give a full daf yomi shiur and that’s how his full daf yomi shiur was born. He stopped the 8 min daf as it was getting hard for him to prepare for the full daf yomi shiur and a summary shiur as well. He hopes to eventually one day come back to it.
I would think a siyum qualifies as someone who went through the Gemara (word by word) and understood it, even if he did it quickly.
If you do a search for path4life, you’ll get the website of Rabbi Nachum Malinowitz and his shiurim. Among his shiurim, he has daf4life, which is a synopsis of the daf.

in reply to: Why do regular ol’ chicken eggs need a hechsher? #2317850

I once heard from a mashgiach that when one sees eggs in an ingredients list on a product to not automatically assume that there is no issue with the eggs. There is an issue called ova eggs (I think that’s what he called it), which is eggs found in the body of a chicken after it was killed or slaughtered. These eggs are an issue and that’s why one has to be sure that the product has a hechsher.
Eggs in a carton probably don’t have this issue.

pekak (along with many people in the world)-please don’t go crazy over the freezer. It’s a difference of a few months. Cheshvan to Shvat or Iyar to Av. Those that want to start to be mekayem the hechsher mitzva of that mitzva kiyumis that you mention is free to do so before he goes into the yeshiva.
Regarding Bein Hazmanim, I heard in from Rav Yisroel Reisman many years ago that Bein Hazmanim is to learn things that you normally wouldn’t learn in a yeshiva setting. For example, a short masechta.

This has been debated nearly every year whether here in the CR or in letters submitted to the news sites. What comes out is that one shouldn’t take his mind off of aveilus. Yes, you can learn about the churban in the Gemara, read eicha, etc. Not everyone can do that the whole day (especially women and children). Therefore, there are things that you can do in order to keep your mind on the aveilus-read holocaust books, watch appropriate movie and shiurim that relate to the churban, holocaust or any other tragedy in Klal Yisroel.
In some circles, they feel that it needs to be motivating and organizations invest time and money into doing these videos which motivate and inspire. Therefore they charge for their videos. In order to get people to watch it, they feel they have to put out a trailer so people will want to watch it.
It definitely used to be more simple-no charge for videos and many of them didn’t have trailers.

Chaim87, you are correct that not everyone can handle full time learning. However, if they make the draft mandatory for all chareidim (which is the new draft law), there will be no more full time learning for anyone, even those who are cut for full time learning.

Rocky-The appreciation of a son-in-law to a father-in-law is very different than the Israeli Government. A father-in-law shows love, care and that’s one of the reasons he does it. It’s not just a deal.
essmeir-unfortunately you are wrong. When I was learning in Eretz Yisroel many years ago, the draft law was starting to be talked about. My Rosh Yeshiva gave a shmuz about it and he said, “Only those who understand the Torah can understand why the chareidim don’t serve in the army.”
If there isn’t full time learning available, where are the Roshei Yeshiva of the next generation going to come from? Where’s Ameilus Hatorah going to come from if there will be no full time learning?

Rocky, there are many reasons why this is not a good comparison. I’ll highlight a few.
The son in law is married to his daughter and therefore this was a condition going into the marriage.
The government cut was done as they want the bochurim to go serve in the army. Let’s change your scenario. The father in law turns to the son and says “I want you to go work in a business setting that’s not appropriate for a ben torah and therefore I’m cutting support.” Do you think the father in law is deserving of any thank you?

If nobody is makpid on chalav yisroel or pas yisroel, bagels and cream cheese would be fine. Peanut butter also usually has a hechsher. Blueberries have an issue with bugs so check the websites of different kashrus agencies (crc, star-k, etc) on how to check them.
Regarding cut fruit, you should ask your local Rabbi as there are different opinions about it.

englisherpotz-when shnooky says to put in the plug, he’s not crying, that’s his voice. Listen to Shnooky other times, you’ll see that’s the way he sounds. As for Dr. Middos yelling at him, you’re exaggerating the story. Picture the scenario in your mind when you’re in middle of trying to figure something out that you worked on and some guy tries to cut into what you’re doing.
When Uncle Moishy came in by MM4, he was already telling them that it was time to go before Uncle Moishy stopped by. That’s not rude but more of an affectionate way-“now off you go,” as in “time to leave.”

whitecar, I’m not really understanding what you’re asking, as you answered your own question.
“If you’re going to answer that the MMM only alerted after the event and then replayed it on the screen, that would be acceptable, but in one of the episodes, Shnooky actually spoke to the child before playing the song (why does everybody make so much fun of me…).”
It was replayed on the screen a few seconds after it happened,, Shnooky saw what what had happened, decided to send him his thoughts and then spoke to him and said listen.
If you listened to MM4, you would know that the MMM detects after after the fact as they used the MMM to find Charlie and Bruno who had kidnapped the president.
