About 55,000 jews were killed in the Vilna Ghetto
There were about 220,000 Jews in Lithuania in 1940, about 200,000 of them were killed
zahavasdadParticipantI was in Golders Green once, They all spoke British there
zahavasdadParticipantRav Chaim Ozer told the jews of Poland to go to Vilna after the invasion of Poland, but before the invasion of Lithuania.
Lithuania was not part of Poland or the Soviet Union before WW II. It was independent between the wars (As was Latvia and Estonia)
zahavasdadParticipantThe Chashmonean were punsihed because they took the Kahuna (Relgious) mantle and the political mantle (The Kingship)
One of the greatest Gedolim of the previous generation Rav Chaim Ozer told the jews from Poland to come to Vilna because it was safe there.
September 29, 2013 11:46 am at 11:46 am in reply to: Telling parents about lifestyle changes #977279zahavasdadParticipantBesides, modern orthodoxy is unsustainable. It essentially is the cultural aspects of Judaism without the heart which almost forces one to choose one way or the other.
Differnt forms of orthodoxy are for different people. Some people just cannot handle the Yeshivish/Kollel Lifestyle , Some cannot handle the Chassidic lifestyle and some cannot handle the Modern Lifestyle.
Everyone is different and has different needs. Some people need chumras and love them and some get overwhelmed by them and go off because its too much for them.
Not everyone can get married at 19 and have 14 kids , not everyone can sit and learn 15 hours a day and not everyone can go into the outside world and work with all kinds of people including those who life lifestyles your abhor without making comments.
September 24, 2013 6:05 pm at 6:05 pm in reply to: How to enforce Tznius guidelines in a Kehillah #976159zahavasdadParticipantOutsider, they are not talking here about a Shul. they are talking about the community as a whole.
If a commumnity has several shuls, it doesnt matter there is still one community
September 24, 2013 1:34 am at 1:34 am in reply to: Frustrated at being in the middle of nowhere USA. #976575zahavasdadParticipantOP you might want to consider a more modern community that is more open to BT’s and those not so relgious. Many more modern shuls especially out of town have a “Dont ask , Dont tell Policy” at least at first.
Many Chabad houses out of town also have this policy as well
zahavasdadParticipantWith the Middos some show here, You dont deserve friends.
zahavasdadParticipantThese were not photos, they were watercolors and the artist just painted people as he saw them in general and the first watercolor was not of a funeral, but rather someone sick in bed (It was supposed to be his deathbed).
Artists dont always have models (These were not meant to be masterpieces) . I would have loved to have taken of picture of these watercolors as I was fascinated by them, but it wasnt allowed 🙁
Its amazing they have survived.
zahavasdadParticipantJust because the Torah allows something doesnt mean we have a Taavah for it.
The Torah allows the eating of certain kinds of Locusts. Assuming you hold by those who say they know which locusts they are, I dont think you are running out to eat one, Most people are repulsed by the though of eating a locuts and most people are repulsed by their cousin, most people consider it incest which they are repulsed from.
zahavasdadParticipantMost people do not have a Yetzer Harah for their cousin , most people consider it like incest.
zahavasdadParticipantIn Prague the building from before the war are still there as are the treasures. In the Chevra Kadisha building there is series of watercolors explaining a jewish funeral in pictures from the 1700’s.
The picture show people surrounding the death bed, Tahara, Burial, the mourning crying and the mourning sitting shiva. Basically what a burial looked like in the 18th century Prague.
NONE of the people in the watercolors are wearing strimels or Beckashers and many didnt even have beards
zahavasdadParticipantThe difference between 22 and 38 is some states dont allow it, but will recognize cousin marriages performed in other states.
zahavasdadParticipantKarliners are known to yell as part of their davening.
zahavasdadParticipantFYI Its not wrong to Judge God
The Piaseczno Rebbe) lived near the exit to the Warsaw Ghetto. he saw the deportations daily to Treblinka (His only son was killed during the bombings of Warsaw) and he began to quesion god for this. he put god on trial and found him guilty.
zahavasdadParticipantRav Avigdor Miller has said many things that were better left unsaid certainly not put in print for anyone to see.
September 16, 2013 3:13 pm at 3:13 pm in reply to: At what point are you officially one side or the other? #983386zahavasdadParticipantDaas Torah. If you belive in Daas Torah you are Charedi, otherwise MO
zahavasdadParticipantBest food is in Rome, Until you have eaten in Rome, you havent eaten
zahavasdadParticipantMost people who call dont really mean it and will do the same thing next year. Its not really sincere. People are doing out of some sense of obligation not that they really mean it
zahavasdadParticipantI do know I heard a Psak from Rav Ovadiah Yosef that talking to women under certain circumstances is not forbidden, I forgot the exact wording he used , but basically that it was so common it didn’t mean anything
zahavasdadParticipantMost people today think of their cousins like they do a brother or sister, Its generally not socially acceptable to marry your cousin
zahavasdadParticipantIts actually illegal in 38 states to marry your 1st cousin (Its Legal in NY)
September 13, 2013 2:14 am at 2:14 am in reply to: Friend wants to marry girl he met online #1187422zahavasdadParticipantJdate is a very popular jewish online dating site.
zahavasdadParticipantWhy is it necessary to extend all this effort for 9.11?
Its amazing some people need to ask such questions
September 10, 2013 10:41 pm at 10:41 pm in reply to: How to enforce Tznius guidelines in a Kehillah #976133zahavasdadParticipantThe problem is the Rabbi Falk book has become the “Bible” of Tznius and it turns off alot of people
zahavasdadParticipantI read in a book by Berel Wein, he was jogging one day in Jerusalem in a sweat suit and Rav Sholomo Zalman Auerbach saw him. Berel Wein was embarrased that the Rav saw him this way and before he could say anything
Rav Shlomo Zalman said, NU your health is important too
zahavasdadParticipantain simcha ela bbasar
What if someone doesnt like fish , meat or wine because frankly I cant stand Gefitle fish and I hate challah too for that matter.
How is it Simcha if I am forced to eat Challah and Gefilte Fish (In my house you will not be served Challah Gefilte Fish or Chicken (Dont really care for that either) that I dont like.
Wine I am picky about, I dont like the cheap stuff. Its undrinkable
September 9, 2013 3:57 pm at 3:57 pm in reply to: How to enforce Tznius guidelines in a Kehillah #976105zahavasdadParticipantAre the same people who want to kick people out of the Kehila, the same people who dont understand why people go OTD
zahavasdadParticipantI did not ask a general question because I wanted to know. I asked because it was impertive to my parnassah. I happen to know some Chashuv people (Not MO Chashuv either) who know exactly what I do and how I make my income. I do not wish to say who I asked because it might give away part of my identity.
It is possible on Amazon and ebay for vacation settings., However on eBay even with vacation settings a sale could still take place especially if you write you will be returning from vacation tommorrow (Meaning Sunday) . On Amazon there is an option to send your inventory to Amazon where they warehouse the item, Sell it for you and ship it for you. There is no way to shut that off. Once Amazon has the item in their possession they will ship as needed. You get alot more sales that way so its nessasary to do so in order to make sales.
Perhaps the Rabbi from the Business Halachic institute was talking about a general website as opposed to eBay and Amazon where it works differently and its not really possible to shut down for 25 hours.
zahavasdadParticipantAmazon does not give you the money until you ship the item.
Paypal its mixed depending on your sales history, Newer sellers Paypal will hold the money for up to 21 days, but for experienced sellers you get the money right away, but they do have the right to take it away (as has happend to me on more than one occasion)
zahavasdadParticipantThis exact issue was an issue for me and I asked already a Posek as this is part of my income.
Instead of trolling during the Asseres Yemei Teshuva , why didnt you ask a Rav yourself. He would have told you a Halachic Sale is where Money is exchanged and a Buyer received an item (Sorry if I forgot the exact Hebrew words).
In an online sale the buyer did pay for the item, but he did not recive the Item.
zahavasdadParticipantIts not a problem because its Halachcally not a sale. While you did get the money, the buyer did not get the Item so its not a halachic sale.
B&H does shut down their website for shabbos and Yom tov.
September 4, 2013 6:12 pm at 6:12 pm in reply to: Why Would a Girl Even Want to Learn Talmud? #973948zahavasdadParticipantI hope you don’t mean Historical chronicles since most Historians take any particular nations historical chronicles with a healthy dose of skepticism since al Nations (except the Jews) were in the habit of recording their good things and twisting their defeats and losses into victories and benefits.
The Gemorah states that Nero left Rome and converted to Judaism and was an ancestor of Rebbe. This account of Nero was not recorded anywhere else and its generally accepted that Nero was either killed or committed suicide. In any case he had no known decendents and if he did they would have been killed as they were their rightful air to the Roman Emperor
September 4, 2013 6:09 pm at 6:09 pm in reply to: Why Would a Girl Even Want to Learn Talmud? #973947zahavasdadParticipantHillel the Second calculated the Solar year to be 365 days 5 hours and 55 Mins, the actual amount is 365 days 5 hours and 49 mins.
Every year 6 mins are added to the year and over 1700 years almost 2 weeks have been added to the calender.
Tefukat Tisheri (First day of Fall) is supposed to be Oct 4, but its actually Sept 21
Tekufat Nissian (First Day of Spring) is supposed to be April 4, but its actually March 21. Causing in some years Pesech to fall out in Winter
zahavasdadParticipantGot me some Taiglach.
Sorry I am not sharing any
September 2, 2013 1:42 am at 1:42 am in reply to: How can I buy tickets to Eretz Yisroel for under $800 NOW? #972771zahavasdadParticipantI have no problem using Turkish Airlines,. ElAL is known for expensive airline fares and the only way they will go down is if people are willing to fly another airline
zahavasdadParticipantI cant tell you about Monsey, but in NYC itself there is a law about owning farm animals without a permit.
And it doesnt matter if its private property or not, You are not allowed to slaughter animals on private property in NYC, there are sanitatary issues that occur no matter where the slaughter occurs, thats why they have these laws.
September 1, 2013 2:42 am at 2:42 am in reply to: How can I buy tickets to Eretz Yisroel for under $800 NOW? #972768zahavasdadParticipantNothing wrong with going through Istanbul, I wouldnt worry about it
zahavasdadParticipantI cant believe a seminary would take someones money and not gurantee acceptance. if they did, I am not sure they would even obey a Din torah.
zahavasdadParticipantUnless OP committed some crime there was unlikely nothing that wasnt known last spring that wasnt known now.
If there was concerns last spring they should have been said so last spring.
A last minute Disinvite is totally wrong
zahavasdadParticipantI do blame the seminary here, not that she was rejected, but that she was rejected at a very late date.
If the seminary did not want her they should have told her last March or April leaving OP enough to apply somewhere else
zahavasdadParticipantId recommend Queens. The Forest Hills, Kew Gardens Hills, Hillcrest and riverdale if you need a place with no car.
West Hempstead and Teaneck would also work , but you need a car
zahavasdadParticipantmost jews today are city slickers. There are very few frum country places
zahavasdadParticipantDrug addiction is a terrible thing and not really one to joke about
zahavasdadParticipantBasements are illegal in NYC of course lots of people rent them. Check the local Pizza shops and flyers around and you should be able to find them.
You mentioned you are a chossid. Perhaps visit the shtebel of your chassidic rebbe and the people there can make some recommendations how to get basements Alot also goes by word of mouth
zahavasdadParticipantHousing is very expensive in NY , I am not sure there is enough money in the entire jewish community to provide housing for all who really need it.
My advice is , if you cant afford NYC stay away and I dont mean it cruely,
August 25, 2013 8:19 pm at 8:19 pm in reply to: For the Jewish Metalhead (I know you're out there). #1023426zahavasdadParticipantThe lead singer of Disturbed is OTD and a yeshiva boy.
zahavasdadParticipantMost European cities have kosher restaurants now . There are plenty of frum jews going to these places. Spain was the only one I had trouble
zahavasdadParticipantYou expected an amen corner.
If you worked for a company and your boss cut your pay, because business was slower , Would you react the same?
You are not entitled to you pay and your boss has the right to cut it at anytime for any reason. The government is no different.
I am still amazed how many people feel its their RIGHT to a government handout
zahavasdadParticipantI agree with the posters, the handouts are not a RIGHT, they are a privilidge.
I assure you 150 years ago if you had 10 kids, there was no government subsidy. it is not Halacha moshe m’sinai that you are entitled to government benefits
