These days kids think sukkos is like the jewish halloween.
Back in the day they didnt bring candy bags on sukkah hops, they did it to hear some dvar torah and make a bracha in the sukka.
Do you think Sukkka hops should be stopped for this reason? What do you think all about it?
Oooh, wow, haven’t done a good sukkah hop in YEARS. I’m not even sure my neighborhood has them anymore (I think they died with the Bnos group).
We never, EVER brought candy bags. We just walked around the neighborhood to the houses of the people who agreed to give us candy, which we always ate in the sukkah, and then ended up at the sukkah of one of the neighborhood rabbanim who told a dvar torah. It was very nice.
No idea how it’s done in Israel so can’t really comment- you just sent me on a trip down memory lane 🙂
I’ve never seen/heard of a sukkah hop where kids bring candy bags– the entire point is to eat the candy in the sukkah!
We spent yom tov in a small but growing yishuv. The sukkah hop used to just literally go around to every sukkah, because there were about thirty families, but as more people moved in this was no longer possible. So the family we stayed with told us that last year, the sukkah hop was not scheduled to stop at their sukkah, but then their youngest child (about four or five) started crying uncontrollably when he found out, so the leaders of the sukkah hop decided to make an unnscheduled stop to placate him 🙂
Several families on our yishuv have a rule that any kids that come must eat the candy in the sukkah, and moreover one of the kids must give a d’var Torah. What I love is that the kids comply, and there’s always someone who can say over something he learned in school.
