Williamsburg Swastikas Found: Another Anti-Semitic Crime Under Investigation

The string of anti-Semitic crimes in Brooklyn continues. The New York City Police Department is now investigating an incident in which a swastika was scratched into an elevator on Ross Street in Williamsburg. This is the second time an elevator in the building has been vandalized with the anti-Semitic symbol. The offending swastikas have since been removed. This incident comes after a shocking anti-Semitic hate crime in Brooklyn earlier this month, where three cars were set ablaze and over a dozen swastikas were scrawled on benches. As New York Magazine reports: Police, who are handling the incident as a hate crime, say that “KKK” was spray-painted on the side of a van, swastikas were scrawled on benches, and other obscenities were written on the sidewalk. “The fact that this most recent attack came on the heels of the 73rd anniversary of Kristalnacht [sic] may or may not be a coincidence,” Mayor Bloomberg said in a statement. The area of Brooklyn targeted contains one of the largest concentrations of Holocaust survivors outside of Israel, according to the New York Times. The jarring incident prompted over a hundred people to take to the streets in a protest for tolerance. Just a week later, a subway station sign in Brooklyn was vandalized to read “Avenue Jew.” As Fox reports: A vandal altered a sign at the J train subway station in a heavily Jewish neighborhood of Midwood. The letters “e” and “w” added with blue spray paint at the end of the “J” in the Avenue J sign to make it read “Avenue Jew.” Despite the appearance of a string of hate crimes targeting the Jewish population, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz characterized the events as anomalies in an interview with CBS New York. “You will discover that they are anti-Semitic hooligans probably drunk on the beer they used and think this is fun,” he said. The elevator incident is being investigated by the NYPD hate crimes task force. So far, no-one has been arrested. (Source: Huffington Post)

MORE HATE: Swastikas Spray-Painted on School Buses in Williamsburg

Frum Jews in Williamsburg were the victim of yet another hate crime on Sunday when a suspect spray-painted swastikas on multiple school buses at Division Avenue and Rodney Street. The incident comes just a day after multiple chasidim were victimized in unprovoked attacks over Shabbos. The NYPD’s 90th Precinct, Hate Crimes Task Force, and Williamsburg Shomrim are investigating the incident and seeking to identify the suspect in this case. “I am angry & heartbroken by two more anti-Semitic, violent incidents in our community over Shabbos,” Councilman Lincoln Restler wrote on Twitter. “A man was violently struck upside the head in Bed Stuy by Marcy & Myrtle. Swastikas & other graffiti were spray painted on yeshiva school bus in Williamsburg by Division & Rodney.” The ADL wrote on Twitter “We are horrified that yeshiva school buses clearly marked in Yiddish could be vandalized in such a way with hateful symbols, especially on the same day that we found two Jewish men to have been assaulted in the area. NY must be a safe heaven for all and this hate must stop! (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

MORE HATE: Rocks Thrown At WIlliamsburg Jewish Homes, Swastika Sprayed Inside School

New York City police are investigating anti-Semitic graffiti, including a swastika, found sprayed in a stairwell of a local high school. An employee of Brooklyn Tech High School found the message scribbled in black marker inside the third-floor stairwell, police said. No arrests have been made. Meanwhile, in Williamsburg, YWN was provided with a video of another disturbing incident. On the video (posted below), the viewr will see a group of young non-Jewish teens on bikes stopping in front of Hasidic-owned homes, and throwing rocks at them. This happened on Shabbos afternoon on Skillman between DeKalb & Lafayette. The discovery of the graffiti Thursday followed a wave of anti-Semitic attacks in and around New York City. Five people were stabbed at a Hanukkah celebration last month north of the city in a machete attack that federal prosecutors say was a hate crime targeting Orthodox Jews. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday he has directed the State Police Hate Crimes Task Force to assist NYPD in its inquiry into the graffiti. “Racism, anti-Semitism and other forms of intolerance are repugnant to New York values,” Cuomo said in a statement. “We will fight back every time they rear their ugly head, and we will win because we are right and we know diversity is and always will be our greatest strength.” https://www.instagram.com/p/B7M4rFbnHu3/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link (AP)

HATE IN NYC: NYPD Looking For Suspects Who Threw Metal Pipe at Williamsburg Shul; Swastika Drawers Arrested [VIDEO]

The NYPD is searching for a gang of six black teens who threw a metal pipe through the window of a Shul in Williamsburg on Shabbos afternoon. Video surveillance shows the group approach the Volkan Shul on Franklin & Myrtle Ave at around 5:30PM on Shabbos, one of whom was holding a metal pipe. As the group stood for approximately ten seconds, the youth holding the pipe raised it, then hesitated and handed it off to a second teen who hurled it through a synagogue window. The entire gang then fled southbound on Franklin Avenue toward Willoughby Avenue and in the course of running, pushed a 10-year-old female to the ground causing minor injury. If law enforcement continues minimizing these events, the message to would-be attackers is clear: It’s open season on Jews. Are we waiting for another Pittsburgh type of attack, G-d forbid, before we take these matters seriously?” Meanwhile, the NYPD announced two suspects had been arrested in connection to multiple swastikas found sprayed on the steps and garage doors of residential homes in Brooklyn Heights on October 30. (Garden Place, between Joralemon Street and State Street.) 18-year-old Jarrick Wiltshire and 17-year-old Daul Moultrie are each now charged with three counts of aggravated harassment. On Friday night, police arrested 26-year-old James Polite for scrawling anti-Semitic messages inside a Reform Jewish temple in Prospect Heights, and setting multiple fires outside Jewish Yeshivas and establishments in Williamsburg. Messages written found at the Union Temple in Prospect Heights included “Kill all Jews”, “die Jew rats we are here,” “Hitler,” and “Jews better be ready”. Polite was a volunteer on Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign, worked for former New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn and other Democrats. On Sunday, police on Long Island removed a swastika-defaced campaign sign in Stony Brook. That sign was for Perry Gershon, a Jew, who is running on the Democratic ticket in the 1st congressional district race against Republican Lee Zeldin. A message of hate was found scrawled across a historic site for the black community. Fliers showing swastikas above the word “Uber” that were found in Williamsburg Monday night are being investigated as a hate crime, police said. “Numerous” fliers were discovered on Bedford Avenue at Williamsburg Street — near where many Hasidic Jewish people live — at about 10 p.m., police said. The black-and-white fliers had the word “Uber” written in the same style as the logo of the Uber taxi share service. Asked if the fliers were related to the taxi company, police said only that the incident was under investigation. “Uber condemns this disgusting act of hatred and calls on the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force to aggressively investigate this despicable crime,” said Josh Mohrer, Uber’s New York general manager, in a statement. The incident was first reported to the Williamsburg Shomrim (WSPU) who are assisting the NYPD in the investigation. (Source: DNA Info)

HATE IN QUEENS: Swastikas Scrawled Inside Car, Third Incident This Week In NYC [PHOTOS]

There has been another anti-semitic attack in NYC. This one was in Queens. It happened at 176th Street near 76 Avenue, in the Fresh Meadows section of Queens, when swastikas were found inside a car on Monday morning. The NYPD 107 Precinct says they are investigating the incident. Assemblymember Daniel Rosenthal told YWN “With the dramatic rise in antisemitism in New York State, the Queens Jewish community has been extremely concerned; this morning our fears were realized. The targeted attacks on Jews is escalating at an alarming rate and has reared its ugly head in our own backyard overnight. We will not submit to this tightening clench of hate, and we will not stop fighting until Jewish New Yorkers are able to feel safe in our own neighborhoods and homes again.” It was not known if this car was broken into overnight, or was done by a passenger. Additional details will be published when they become available to us. On Sunday YWN reported two additional hate incidents. One involved a swastika inside a school, while another involved thugs throwing rocks at Jewish homes in Williamsburg.

MORE HATE IN WILLIAMSBURG: Hasidic Jews Attacked By 7 Thugs On Shabbos, Shtreimels Thrown Off [VIDEO]

The anti-Semitic hate seems to never end in New York City, with the latest attack on Friday night. Sources tell YWN that a group of 7 suspects attacked two Hasidic men as they walked on Wythe Avenue and South 10 Street. In the attached footage, the viewer will see the gang walk past two Hasidic men talking on the corner and simply throw the “Shtreimels” (fur hats) that the victims were wearing, to the floor. The group then calmly walks away. YWN notes that a police report was never made (as of Sunday at 5:00PM ET), nor was Williamsburg Shomrim contacted. Perhaps because nothing ever happens to these attackers. Does anyone think the community actually takes these declarations seriously anymore? We have witnessed multiple press conferences and statements -‎ one after the next  with serious looking elected officials standing next to a few Jewish community leaders, all looking tough for the cameras, hoping to be interviewed and quoted by the media. Clearly, these conferences and statements mean nothing other than photo-ops and sound bites for elected officials looking to shore up their anti hatred credentials with the Jewish community. We are tired of the same cycle- attack, shock, press conference, rinse & repeat. Where are the new updated anti-hatred policies by the Mayor and Governor to counter these attacks? Where is the overwhelming sustained police presence? The depraved attackers aren’t on twitter or impacted by the worthless condemnations & press conferences. Perhaps it is time for the Federal Government to send in the FBI and  bypass the NYPD and start making arrests themselves. Federal hate crime penalties  are far more serious than the revolving door of the Brooklyn court system. ‎Speaking of local officials where is State Attorney General Letitia James who was strongly supported by the Jewish community of Brooklyn? The dereliction of duty of our elected officials has put us in a very dangerous place. We have had enough promises and vows. Action is needed now. To add insult to injury, though the National media and the Democratic party would have you believe that it’s white supremacists and Trump supporters solely responsible for rising hate crimes across the United States, nothing could be further from the truth in NYC. If you need more fuel to prove the pack of lies being spoon-fed to the masses, these same grandstanding officials tell us it’s those “angry Trump supporters who are committing these crimes” when in fact, nearly NONE of the hate crimes against Jews in NYC were the result of a Trump supporter, not unless Trump suddenly has support among 18-year-old minority and illegal thugs living in Brooklyn. NYPD Arrests Suspects Who Attacked Hasidic Teen, Vandalized Shul in Williamsburg

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force has taken two suspects into custody regarding recent hate crimes in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. NYPD sources confirm to YWN that one suspect in custody is being charged with knocking a hat off the head of a Hasidic teen, while the other is charged with throwing a metal pipe through the window of a Synagogue – as reported by YWN. The suspects were seen on surveillance footage near the Volkan Shul on Franklin & Myrtle Ave on Shabbos afternoon, accompanied by 4 other black teens. They appeared to be chasing and taunting a Hasidic boy, when one teen reached out and knocked his hat off his head. The group then fled towards the Shul. One teen was seen holding a metal pipe as they stood around for approximately ten seconds. The youth holding the pipe raised it, then hesitated and handed it off to a second teen – the suspect in custody – who hurled it through a window of the Shul, causing approximately $250 in damage. Following the vandalism, the entire gang fled southbound on Franklin Avenue toward Willoughby Avenue. It was not known if additional suspects were being sought by the NYPD. NEW FOOTAGE: Gang of Teens Attacked Hasidic Boy Moments Before Vandalizing Williamsburg Shul – Not Deemed ‘HATE CRIME’

As reported on YWN, the NYPD is searching for a gang of six black teens who threw a metal pipe through the window of a Shul in Williamsburg on Shabbos afternoon. New footage obtained by YWN on Tuesday shows the same group of teens attacking a Hasidic boy moments before the attack on Franklin Ave, knocking his hat off his head as he innocently walked down the street. Shockingly, the NYPD had not deemed the vandalism attack on the Volkan Shul a “hate crime”. This new footage clearly shows the gang’s intention. The NYPD has announced a $2500 award for information regarding the suspects. NY State Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) has expressed shock that the incident is not being considered a Hate Crime by police: “The video is clear: This gang came to this specific location—a synagogue; they looked around to see if anyone was watching, then threw a metal bar through glass at the congregation. Williamsburg: ADL Deeply Troubled By Anti-Semitic Vandalism of Chasidic Home

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today said it was deeply troubled by the vandalism of a Hasidic Jewish home in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. According to reports, on January 2, graffiti was discovered scrawled on the home of Jewish residents, including swastikas and the words “Hitler was a hero.” The vandalism follows a string of harassing incidents against the home’s residents. ADL has documented at least a dozen alleged anti-Semitic incidents since September 2015 and is concerned over various and unrelated assaults in which visibly identifiable Jews were singled out for violence across the five boroughs. “This shocking incident, which based on the words used in the graffiti, was clearly motivated by extreme anti-Jewish animus,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “It is deeply troubling when individuals are targeted, harassed, or persecuted for their religious beliefs. We continue to urge community leaders across the board, as well as our elected officials, to make their voices heard in denouncing such appalling acts of hate.” (YWN Desk – NYC)

Local Elected Officials & UJO Join Together To Denounce Anti-Semitic Attacks In Williamsburg

Williamsburg – In recent months there have been numerous incidents of anti-Semitic vandalism in Williamsburg, including the discovery of a swastika in Kent Village Housing this week. These hate crimes, typically in the form of swastika graffiti in areas of Williamsburg with a large Hasidic population, erode the sense of security that has long existed for the Williamsburg community. While these crimes are being investigated by the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force, Council Member Levin is joining Rabbi David Niederman, Executive Director of the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg, Assemblyman Joseph Lentol, and other community leaders in a stand of solidarity to call for an end to the hateful graffiti and a restoration of a sense of calm and security in the community. “One act of hate is too many, but I really cannot believe the amount of anti-Semitic graffiti that has been on display in Williamsburg over the past few months,” said Levin. “I find it incredibly troubling that there are people out there, whether kids or adults, who think it is acceptable to tag swastikas and other symbols of anti-Jewish sentiment around Williamsburg. We are here today to demand that whoever is perpetrating these crimes to stop—residents in this community should be able to walk down the streets in their own neighborhood without being fearful. In a community as diverse as Williamsburg, we must learn to co-exist peacefully. I applaud the NYPD’s commitment to finding the perpetrators of these terrible crimes and bringing them to justice, but we, as a community, must work together to ensure that this type of hate does not persist in our neighborhood.” The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force focuses on apprehending perpetrators of hate crimes – unlawful acts committed against persons, groups or places targeted because of their race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, gender or age. The NYPD has always been responsive to the needs of Williamsburg and the community remains confident that the perpetrators of these hate crimes will be brought to justice. “Residents of Kent Village Housing, some of whom are Holocaust survivors, were terrified to once again see swastikas in our neighborhood,” said Rabbi Niederman. “Today, our community stands together to say that we are united against hate and intolerance in any form. Religious and racial discrimination have no place in our community.” (YWN Desk – NYC)
