So you would want to give the benefit of the doubt to a State which was started with the intention to uproot Torah ch”v. I have no idea why you would want to do that, particularly against the opinion of the Chazon Ish etc. (chochom odif mi’novi…).
May 12, 2016 6:01 pm at 6:01 pm in reply to: Chief Rabbi: Could we sit and study Torah without soldiers? #1151794☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantDY- are you implying it is the soldiers’ fault that we need protection in the first place and therefore they don’t deserve a “groiser yasher koach” for risking their lives when giving us that very same protection?
No I am not. We need to try and separate the individuals who came into the bad situation from the institution which created the bad situation. (That’s hard to do, though.)
Yom Haatzmaut is about the institution which created the situation.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantZD, it’s about balancing risks/downsides with benefits.
Would you be in favor of a 120 mph speed limit on side streets, or 5 year olds or seniors with poor reflexes having drivers’ licenses or anyone texting while driving?
May 12, 2016 5:42 pm at 5:42 pm in reply to: Chief Rabbi: Could we sit and study Torah without soldiers? #1151788☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSo if someone would ask if we could have parnassah without a job, the answer would be yes as well.
I’m not saying a person doesn’t need to get a job, or that as things currently stand, we should disband the army.
A proper analogy (similar to ones given by the Chazon Ish and others) would be if Reuven had a lot of wealth and didn’t need to work, but Shimon swindled him of all his possessions and then offered him a job. Perhaps Reuven needs to take him up on it, but Shimon doesn’t have any groiser yasher koach coming to him.
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI’m not talking about banning it, I’m talking about being aware of the issues and making a reasonable choice to avoid it.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantVM, you are not the only person in the world.
I have been advised by someone involved in phone and computer filtering and monitoring programs that people should stay away from WhatsApp – not because of some theory a rebbe or rav came up with, but based on real life experiences.
I haven’t used WhatsApp, and don’t know how it works (although some of the posts here are enlightening), but just because some people don’t have a problem with something doesn’t mean others won’t.

If HKB”K sees fit to allow us a period of time to be able to sit and learn relatively undisturbed, He doesn’t need the secular zionists’ help.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAvi K is correct.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYou weren’t yotzei the shittah to not say Hallel.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYou have been proven wrong, yet stubbornly hold your mistaken view.

☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhy should I post today’s count if you already did?

I think conceptually, we can see a path to an approach for other situations.
This question has been discussed here before.

☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAvram:
It is not inappropriate to say that he caused him to be a vehicle for K”H.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI’m not sure why you can’t see the distinction between causing his death and causing that he be a vehicle for kiddush Hashem.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantNu, nu, he misposted.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantCan be done with group texting as well.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe U.S. was a wonderful place for Jews to live before toeivah and retzichah were glorified.
The fact that if the old time conservatives had gotten their way and nothing had changed we would have continued to be discriminated against is not an excuse to modify our values chas v’shalom.
We are not supposed to have liberal values and we are not supposed to have conservative values. We are supposed to have Torah values.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantHe mentioned bar mitzvah, not bas mitzvah.
May 10, 2016 9:47 pm at 9:47 pm in reply to: What to do (law school question) VERY IMPORTANT #1152904☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAn example of a moral dilemma for a lawyer (one which he failed):
http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/vote-third-parties#post-609836
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantQuestion: Are we being selfish when we bentch someone that he should live ad meah v’esrim? Should we rather wish for him that he [R”L] be killed by terrorists for being Jewish?
No.
Nor are we being selfish if we daven that someone’s suffering be alleviated, or do something tangible to help someone. This is despite the fact that we know yissurin are a tremendous kapparah.
Nobody claimed that someone did or should daven for someone to die.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantZD,
Then his point.wouldn’t have been made. It seems you disagree with his point, but why is his making it haughty?
Avram, I think we assume that dying because one is a Jew is a tremendous z’chus. R’ Akiva could have also died as you describe, but we assume it was a bigger z’chus to die the way he did.
Why can’t dying in his sixties be the time he was supposed to, yet still be a kapparah?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantCan you be more specific?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWhat made you think it was haughty?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI don’t understand how dying al kiddush Hashem can be separated from dying.
Everybody dies. Some people have a special z’chus to die al kiddush Hashem. It’s not a matter of separating dying al kiddush Hashem from dying; it’s s matter of separating dying al kiddush Hashem from dying shelo al kiddush Hashem.
Also, I can understand the tefilla that, if/when it is my time, let it be meaningful, but that is different from coming in ex post facto and saying with authority what happened with someone and why.
Agreed; it’s a theory, not a certitude. I’m not saying I think that’s what happened, I just don’t think what he said deserved the response it got.
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participantisn’t it presumptuous for a human being to say whether another man died at his proper time?
Would you rather assume that R’ Elchonon died before his time?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantAvram in MD,
his assertion that the Chofetz Chaim’s tefillos resulted in Rav Elchonon Wasserman’s death
Why do you need to read it that way? Why not read it that his tefillos resulted in the z’chus, but that he died exactly when he was anyhow supposed to?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSam, who says davening to die al pi kiddush Hashem means davening to die? Perhaps it means davening that when he dies, at the time already determined, it should be al kiddush Hashem.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe issur is based on a minhag, because the minhag is binding.
Minhag oker halachah refers to kula, not chumra, though, so not relevent to this discussion.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIt would seem that according to all opinions a ben Eretz Yisrael can do actions which are only prohibited d’rabbanan, especially if no one knows that he is a frum Jew.
Source?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIn case anyone missed it, “Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president?” is quoting Donald Trump about Carly Fiorina, and Rebyidd23’s subsequent post was paraphrasing his backtracking.
May 8, 2016 9:21 pm at 9:21 pm in reply to: What to do (law school question) VERY IMPORTANT #1152883☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSure, but most shochtim are honest people.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantIf the kiddush is in shul, there should be a siddur around. Otherwise, he can ask someone who does know it baal peh to say it (without Hashem’s name) and he repeats after him. If the other person ate and needs to say a brachah acharonah, he can say it out loud, and your friend can listen and answer amen. They should both have in mind that one is helping the other discharge his obligation.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMay 8, 2016 1:49 pm at 1:49 pm in reply to: What to do (law school question) VERY IMPORTANT #1152880☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYou think in that case they would tell the lawyers? Why would they?
Because they’re afraid the lawyers will catch them, so instead they give them a cut.
May 6, 2016 6:59 pm at 6:59 pm in reply to: What to do (law school question) VERY IMPORTANT #1152871☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantExcept if you’re a criminal lawyer.
(Which is a redundancy.)
☕ DaasYochid ☕Participant☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantYom Tov Sheini K’hilchaso quotes R’ Shlomo Zalman and R’ Elyashiv as saying that yishuv Yisroel includes non frum.
It is not only about maris ayin and chashad, but that is also a concern (although as I mentioned, maybe not here since its yadua that El Al is Israeli)
The Mishna Berurah does use the term farhesia, but perhaps it’s not the same geder as other uses of the term b’farhesia.
I think there’s a teshuvah from R’ Moshe about it.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantMeno, I believe we generally do accept that an airport is chutz l’tchum, but as I wrote, I question whether that applies to El Al in JFK.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantSam, I said I’m not sure. Here are some of the questions which lead to my doubt, despite it possibly not technically being in the t’chum of the NYC yishuv:
Do there need to be 10 frum Yidden, or any Yidden? Are there 10 Yidden in JFK? Do people in the 5t see the name of the airline on incoming planes? Is the fact that the schedule is public information enough to make it b’farhesia or does there need to be an actual sighting? Even if the above were problems, would the fact that El Al is known to be an Israeli company negate that? Are there El Al employees who live in ch”l being mechallel Yom Tov and is that the airline’s issue? Would non frum passengers who live in ch”l be an issue for the airline?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantA ben E.Y. is not allowed to do m’lacha in ch”l on Yom Tov Sheini b’farhesia. I’m not sure if this qualifies as b’farhesia.
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantWould you say the same thing if it was a minyan for teens at risk?
☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantI agree with Meno. Don’t daven there.
I think you can speak to the rav, but go into the conversation with an open mind about his reasoning, and understand that he may not be able to share it with you.
If this minyan were a youth minyan for at risk kids, we would all look at this very differently. Well, maybe the rav looks at it as a minyan for at risk adults.
If you think about it, for the most part, someone makpid on davening wouldn’t daven there (I’m sure DaMoshe’s father does care about davening, which is why I said “for the most part”).
So who’s attracted to such a shul? People who are lax in at least one area of avodas Hashem, and likely in more. If every shul would not tolerate the talkers, the talkers would not have a shul to go to. The rav’s cheshbon might be that they’re better off in his shul talking, where he can perhaps have a positive influence on them in other areas, than on the streets, or forming their own minyan with no guidance whatsoever.
