It’s funny – B,C,D, and E, are the exact opposites of what I was thinking. But I guess it does go both ways. Anyway, I can’t answer A. I can’t answer C,D, and E, for the same reason as explained in this conversation between myself and PulsingFlower (you can just click on the first link and read straight; I put the other links so that you could skip the other posts in that thread that weren’t part of the conversation):
F, is an interesting one. Are you alleging that everyone in the Coffee Room (yourself included) is not fulfilling their potential? Or is it my specific potential that can’t be fulfilled in the Coffee Room?
Patur Aval AssurParticipantShowjoe:
You are talking about a different issue. The only thing I was talking about is the fact that girls have nothing to do. So they might spend their time doing things that they otherwise wouldn’t/shouldn’t be doing. I am not trying to eradicate movies. But it sounds like Letakein Girl doesn’t inherently want to be watching movies all day; she just has nothing else to do. If she had something else to do she would gladly do it. (Correct me if I’m wrong, Letakein Girl.) I was merely suggesting that if were able to learn Gemara. they would always have something to potentially do. Obviously they wouldn’t be learning Gemara all day, but it would alleviate the problem somewhat. Especially considering that since they don’t have a chiyuv to learn, the Yetzer Hara not to learn is much smaller. And learning Gemara can be very satisfying.
All this has nothing to do with boys. They have their own issues which I wasn’t discussing.

3) Ergo, some people don’t want to marry their bashert

Patur Aval AssurParticipantPAA: What prompted your change in opinion that causes you to sing a new tone?
Well three years ago I wasn’t advocating any position vis-a-vis suport; I was just discussing the issue of wanting a kollel son in law without having to pay for it. The reason why I sing in a new tone is (I hope) that I am a better person than I was three years ago, or at least that I am more cognizant of the fact that there is a person at the other end with feelings even in an anonymous forum.

I would not write like that nowadays.
Patur Aval AssurParticipantI explained in my not yet approved post.
Patur Aval AssurParticipantWell I don’t completely disagree with my former self. I mostly disagree with my tone. (This is an example of what I meant in my comments thread when I said “Additionally, several of the quotes here are from threads from three years ago when I first joined the coffee room, and I may have said some things in the follies of my youth which I would not say now.”)
I do agree with myself that it’s a catch 22.
And I pretty much agree with what you’ve said now.
And once you brought up a thread from three years ago, check out this http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/getting-rid-of-the-status-of-moser#post-263556 which I believe is the first pun using my name in the coffee room and it was made by………………………… ………………………………… DaasYochid!

November 12, 2014 2:09 am at 2:09 am in reply to: This is Not Related to the Theological Conundrum #1074485Patur Aval AssurParticipantWithout the other gemaros, one might think there’s no mitzvah to learn shelo lishmah; in fact, it might be an aveirah (kardom lachpor bo).
I could possibly hear that, but then it Tosafos really should have asked from kardom. But then again, I could also hear that at least in Berachos Taanis Tosafos had no choice because those gemaros are discussing the badness of shelo lishma.
November 12, 2014 2:01 am at 2:01 am in reply to: This is Not Related to the Theological Conundrum #1074484Patur Aval AssurParticipantBecause the reason it’s noach shelo nivra is because it’s not worth the risk that he’ll do more aveiros than mitzvos. Since he’s doing mitzvos, for him it’s noach shenivra.
I thought that after all the hock in the shidduch crisis thread you would have conceded that we don’t have data about this fellow’s number of mitzvos and aveiros.

To make a long story short, in the thread http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/coffeeroom/topic/ever-seen-a-forest-animal-die-of-old-age Randomex and I were debating whether Chuvim’s question on Writersoul was a valid question. Randomex wrote a response that was something like seven pages long (I’m probably exaggerating slightly) and I responded to him with a point-by-point rebuttal. That was around three weeks ago and Randomex had yet to respond. When I pointed this out to him, he said that he doesn’t have to respond until I respond to everything he ever said to me in the coffee room which I have not responded to. So I decided to placate him. One of the places that he mentioned which I had not responded to him was in this thread.
So now to explain what it is that I was responding to:
In the creative writing thread you said (to me) “You’re NUTS”. When I copied your comment into this thread, Randomex said:
That one’s difficult to interpret as an insult in context*, especially the way kids talk these days…
I responded that you are presumably not a kid considering that you are a teacher. Randomex then asserted that the fact that you used words such as “OMGOMGOMG” and “KKKKKKK” calls into question my assumption that you are not a kid. I had not responded to that, so today I responded by saying “Fair point about Eftach”, referring to Randomex’s assertion.
Hope this helped.
November 11, 2014 11:44 pm at 11:44 pm in reply to: Modern Orthodox people (and sometimes Popa) are stupid #1041231Patur Aval AssurParticipantRandomex:
It doesn’t specifically refer to the post being responded to. It refers to the most recent post.
As for the actual question:
Chizkiyahu said ??? ?????? ??? ???? ??? ??? ??? ???? ????? ?? ???. Why didn’t he say ??? ?? ??????? ???? ?? ???? ??? ??? ??? ???? ????? ?????
Presumably then, the kal vachomer is from the Shunamite as opposed to from the kid. If that is the case then we have a problem – by the Shunamite, the one who did the good deed was the one who got helped whereas by Chizkiyahu, the one getting helped was not the one doing the good deed. So the kal vachomer is no good. Unless you say that the good deed of King Solomon was so much greater than the good deed of the Shunamite that it outweighed the fact that it wasn’t Chizkiyahu himself who had done it. But we don’t usually make kal vachomer’s like that. (Perhaps one could say that Chizkiyahu wasn’t using the actual middah of kal vachomer, inasmuch as he was just making an argument.)
I know this didn’t actually address the question.
Patur Aval AssurParticipantJust to clarify:
Even though I’m serious, I’m joking around so don’t take it personally.
Patur Aval AssurParticipantI’m not sure how you determined that those were the only two factors. :-/
There was a third factor (which I in fact mentioned there) but the Hebrew translation was supposed to get around that factor.

Patur Aval AssurParticipantI claim disproportionate retribution (and wall-of-text syndrome)
in the Ir Miklat thread.
Does that mean that you agree with my three years ago self?
Patur Aval AssurParticipantIs there one that means that what I said was actually serious but I don’t want the moderators to get insulted so I put in an emoticon? (You can read this post with an emoticon too if you so desire.)
Patur Aval AssurParticipant(Randomex, you need not follow the asterisk. Actually, scratch that; you’re probably the only one reading this so if you don’t follow it no one will.)
Apparently the students are outshining the teacher*, as I at least point out when I am addressing the original question.
Disclaimer: I linked the thread solely because of the usage of the phrase “talmid outshining his rebbe”. No comment on the content of that thread.
Patur Aval AssurParticipantThat was the closest I’ve ever come to using an emoticon. I actually put one in but I just couldn’t bear it so I deleted it.
Which emoticon?
Patur Aval AssurParticipantAn assumption supported by the data of at least five attempted postings. But you’re right; it could be that the Moderator was fine with Freudian Psychology and just doesn’t like Patur Aval Assur.
I’m not sure how you determined that those were the only two factors. :-/
Patur Aval AssurParticipantSayIDidIt:
My profusest of apologies (Randomex, I think I just made up another word).
By the way (SayIDidIt, not Randomex), my response to you from the PROJECT IMPROVE thread can be seen on my profile page since the moderator(s) did not want Freudian Psychology in that thread. But you might have some trouble deciphering it since all the Hebrew letters were converted into question marks.
That is, by the way, an assumption
Patur Aval AssurParticipantIt would tell me the specific location of the joke,
unless you were to claim that all our posts up to your
claim that there was a joke were part of the joke.
Something like that, I think.
I was going to ask what one is supposed to do when logic and common sense are at odds with each other but then I decided that your post might have only meant that not everything that makes logical sense is common sense but not that something which is common sense could defy logic.
Patur Aval AssurParticipantWhat I mean is that at the time that I followed the asterisks, I was not yet aware that I had provided the wrong link so when you said “The final link was meant to be this, not the same as the fourth” I had no idea what you were referring to. In retrospect it does seem a bit foolish of me not to have realized that.

I have now responded in both of those threads. And while we’re on the topic, you owe me about five responses in the creative writing thread (and perhaps in the wizard of oz thread).

Patur Aval AssurParticipantWell you said I didn’t have to follow the asterisks. It happens to be that I did follow them; I just hadn’t realized that you were correcting my mistake.
Patur Aval AssurParticipantSo PAA, are you admitting that the discussion you were having, which you claimed is “a real joke which will make people happy/laugh”, did not have anything funny to it (and if it did, you didn’t “get it”)?
If you replace “and” with “or” then I will admit to the part in parentheses.

November 10, 2014 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm in reply to: This is Not Related to the Theological Conundrum #1074478Patur Aval AssurParticipantActually, I think I addressed it, but I’ll explain. If learning shelo lishma is a mitzvah, albeit on a lower level, how can it not elevate him to a status of noach shenivra
Why can’t it be a mitzvah and it’s still noach lo shelo nivra? Especially according to the Maharsha.
and, as secretagentyid said, why would it be a sam hamaves?
I pointed out that that should be stam a kashya on the gemara in Taanis (sam hamaves) or on the gemara in Berachos (noach lo shelo nivra), but not a stira.
“Shelo lishma” is a negative – NOT for it’s proper purpose – so the meaning is actually the same. What fills that void is different, which isn’t shver.
Then it should also include learning in order to get schar (for sure according to the Rambam).
Patur Aval AssurParticipantJust to clarify. The premise of this thread was not that these issues should not be argued about. The premise was that ZIONISM should not be argued about; instead halachic issues should be argued about. I chiefly meant halachic issues that are relevant today, as opposed to the issue of the three oaths which happened already, but since l’maaseh it is a halachic debate, I can’t object.
Patur Aval AssurParticipantAnd the time stamp might have already been saying two weeks for six days, in which case you are indeed running out of time.
