popa -He learned through practice
That was my point. That he must have been doing it before he was that good also.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantIf you can aim like Reb Yona Bar Tachlifa then you may hunt birds.
How’d he learn how to do it?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAlthough, I am sure that R Moshe’s heter would work as well. (“Rabbis”)
Nice. I think it would.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantYitzchok told (who he thought was) eisav to hunt for him.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAnyway acheinu kol beis yisroel, so if we were makpid on that then nobody is married.
July 1, 2014 11:32 pm at 11:32 pm in reply to: becoming dentist coming out of full time learning #1021936popa_bar_abbaParticipantMy timeline assumed you would get a new undergrad degree from like touro which I think could be done in two intense years if you transfer yeshiva credits and include all three summers.
If using yeshiva degree (is that ever done for dental school?), then you can do a postbac program in like a year and half.
July 1, 2014 6:17 pm at 6:17 pm in reply to: becoming dentist coming out of full time learning #1021932popa_bar_abbaParticipantProbably:
Undergrad pre-med: 2 very intense years, is my guess. Maybe will take 3.
Taking DAT, year off for applications: 1 year
Dental School: 4 years, 200-300k debt.
Total: 7-8 years.
I think it’s a good idea.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThey don’t spout motzi shem ra the way you do.
Of course not. They are motzi shem ra about tannaim, amoraim, rishonim, acharonim, and present day gedolim.
That might make him not an Orthodox rabbi; it doesn’t make him not Orthodox.
lol
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI’ve asked many Orthodox rabbis what about Abraham Joshua Heschel z’tz’l wasn’t Orthodox and nobody has ever been able to tell me anything about him that wasn’t.
Probably because the “orthodox” rabbis you asked are less orthodox than he was.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantSam, many founders of the Conservative movement were observant in private life. I don’t think that is metaher them, though.
I’m well aware that Saul Lieberman’s scholarship was well regarded by talmidei chachomim in “our camp.” Hence my analogy to Yochanan kohen gadol, and let’s add in Acher for good measure.
June 30, 2014 4:46 pm at 4:46 pm in reply to: New Chovevei "Rabbi" is as Orthodox as His Wife #1021956popa_bar_abbaParticipantFine, Sam, so what would you have titled the thread?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantMore accurately, most frum people have barely heard of him, but would happily reject him if they knew who he was. Along With saul lieberman. And even would reject Yochanan kohein gadol.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantSam, just do the math. You concede there are things one party can do that are evil enought to justify the other side withholding halachic divorce. So then in each situation, either the one side is being evil or the other side is.
You assume it is very rare that the one party would be so evil–well so should you assume it is very rare that the other side would be so evil. Equally rare.
I assume about half of killings among people who know each other are justified.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantSam, I don’t know why you assume it is so rare. I would assume that it is no rarer for one party to be so obnoxious and crazy as to make it appropriate, than for the other party to be so obnoxious and crazy as to do it inappropriately.
So I assume it’s about 50-50.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI would never take the subway to work. Work is for modernishe shkotzim.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantsplenda: Because women can abuse that the same way men can abuse the “right” Hashem gave them to decline to give a get.
But if a man abuses it, we beat him to death or until he gives it.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantA woman can get a huge PR campaign and public support, and shunning her husband. A man cannot.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantErrr? Your toilet in the country flushes? Mine doesn’t…
June 26, 2014 9:33 pm at 9:33 pm in reply to: New Chovevei "Rabbi" is as Orthodox as His Wife #1021947popa_bar_abbaParticipantCharlie consider that there may also be something wrong with the fact that you aren’t willing to acknowledge that anything can ever be wrong with anything?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantThere is a very positive correlation, once you control for the lifestyle cost of becoming wealthy, the types of personalities that might want to live that lifestyle because they so need to become wealthy, and the types of psychological disorders you might have by growing up wealthy.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantBleak House
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWhy not just go horseback riding?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantYes, I am. Ask me any biology questions, on my advice column.
I’ll give you just a preview: the thigh bone is connected to the…hip bone!

popa_bar_abbaParticipantThe majority of humans do no longer exist. How many people are alive now, and how many do you think have been alive in all time?
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI once met a lawyer who worked for a big corporation and he was doing lawyer stuff for them. Maybe you can do that, but then you have to work for a big corporation.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantAnimals eat most human foods.
Some animals eat most humans as food.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantYes, I am a lawyer lawyer. I represent the interests of lawyers to the wider public.
popa_bar_abbaParticipant1. Define “very well.” If you mean 170+, it may be worthwhile to go to law school, if you want to be a lawyer.
2. See above.
3. True, unless see above.
4. Depends on the connections, and that can be the only exception to above. If your father has a small firm and will hire you and give you the firm when he retires, it could make sense to go to a lousy (read “top 20”) law school and do that.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantCharlie, that is terrible advice.
OP is 23 and looking for a career and fast. He is not 17 and looking for a “well rounded (read: garbage) learning experience.”
He is looking for a job that interests him, not a study that interests him. While that might overlap, it certainly is not the same.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantForget the major–what career are you trying to get into? Pick the major based on that.

That’s ok, if you are illiterate and really want to teach, you can just get licensed and teach in public school.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantTisha b’av goy
popa_bar_abbaParticipantI feel like there used to be more posts on this thread. Notice how I am not the one who started it, but I am the first post.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantCorn on the cob is used as a euphemism for something else secret. If you aren’t supposed to know, they just tell you it isn’t on the menu because the mashgiach said so.
June 18, 2014 4:16 pm at 4:16 pm in reply to: Jewish Perspective on Humans Controlling Nature #1020349popa_bar_abbaParticipantLet’s change the title to Perspective on Jews Controlling Nature. That should earn us a neonazi link.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantYes, Darja requires climbing up or down cliffs on ropes and handholds chiseled into rock, and sometimes jumping into pools of water. Yehudiya requires climbing up or down cliffs on metal ladders attached to the rock.
I suggested it as a joke, not sure why the other one was suggested.
You can probably find something more friendly at ein gedi.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantWadi Darja
popa_bar_abbaParticipantOf course not. She wears sheish and argaman.
I think I’m going to write a competing tznius sefer and call it ?? ?????? ?????, and it will be about the actually appropriate way for a bas yisroel to dress in her status as a bas melachim.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantDY does not want to know what she just said about him.
popa_bar_abbaParticipantMy wife says PAA is meshuga l’davar echod.

Dear Veltz Meshugener,
You have a job that would not notice if you were gone for six months? It seems like if I don’t answer this column for just 4 days people already start tracking me down.
love,
popa bar abby
popa_bar_abbaParticipantYou should wait a while.
Notice how you said you are ready to “get engaged” instead of being ready to “get married.”

In any event, I guess this explains why I’ve never been able to create more than wisps, and even that only when drunk. It’s because I use a baalabatish cholam.
